Did you know? Mass intentions/prayer of the faithful.
As public Masses have resumed you may have noticed a slight change in the prayers of the faithful. After reviewing the instructions that offer guidance on the proper celebration of Holy Mass and with consulting with other pastors, we have decided that we will no longer be announcing “today’s Mass intention.” Occasionally as it happens, over time some practices creep into the Mass that are not in line with the mind of the Church; unfortunately, this is one of them. A priest will always have one or more intentions that he takes to the altar, often at the request of the faithful. This will not change; the priest is still offering the Mass on behalf of that intention. These are the ones published in the bulletin and on the website. And everyone is invited to pray on behalf of these intentions.
It is also good to know that the Church prescribes a “Formula of Intent” for the priest to say before each Mass. It is as follows: “My intention is to celebrate Mass and to consecrate the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the Rite of Holy Roman Church, to the praise of almighty God and all the Church triumphant, for my good and that of all the Church militant, for all who have commended themselves to my prayers in general and in particular, and for the welfare of holy Roman Church. Amen.”
And for the prayers of the faithful, the Church also offers guidance on how these are to be constructed. The general instructions say that petitions may be offered for
(1) the needs of the Church;
(2) for public authorities and the salvation of the whole world;
(3) for those burdened by any kind of difficulty; and
(4) for the local community. And it says that that the people participate by standing and offering an invocation after each intention or by praying in silence.
