Gil Penalosa, founder of the Open Streets movement
and internationally renowned advocate of sustainable
mobility and “cities for all people”, recently spoke to plan-
ners, elected officials and citizen groups in the Tampa Bay
Area. Gil was hosted by Kristine Williams of CUTR,
advisor to the LiveMove USF student group –a group of
USF students committed to advancing principles of livabil-
ity and equitable transportation in the Tampa Bay area.
LiveMove USF leaders and CUTR graduate students
Monica Martin, Austin Gibble, and Katrina Corcoran, used their stu-
dent group funding from the National Institute of Transportation and Communities to
bring Gil to Tampa Bay for three days of outreach. “Gil helped us all think boldly about
the future of transportation in Tampa Bay,” said Williams. “He showed us how even
small steps can have a big
return.” Gil is Chair of 8 80
Cities, an organization cen-
tered on a simple but power-
ful philosophy: if you create
a great city for an 8 year old
and an 80 year old, you will
create a successful city for
all people.

On Saturday, April 30, CUTR hosted a Traffic Skills 101 bicycling course. Participants had
two hours of parking lot skills that include Rock Dodge and Emergency Stop, then went on
a 7 mile ride. There were 11 students in attendance, including CUTRites Ric Hartman,
Lucy Gonzalez and Brentin Mosher. Also, Julie Bond and Jason Jackman,
both League Cycling Instructors, assisted lead instructor Sharon Monahan with the
course.
On Sunday, May 15, the City of Temple Terrace hosted its second annual Cyclovia. A
portion of 56th street between Busch Blvd and Whiteway Dr. was closed for people to
walk, bike, run, skate and play. Members of the CUTR TDM team (Julie Bond,
Brentin Mosher, Lucy Gonzalez-Barr, Amy Lester, Sara Hendricks and
Phil Winters) worked at the Bike/Walk Tampa Bay booth, distributing bike lights,
reflective backpacks and other safety information. Additionally, 140 helmets were fit-
ted for adults and children! To learn more about Bike/Walk Tampa Bay, visit
www.bikewalktampabay.org.
Jason Jackman was interviewed by ABC Action News in regards to the free app that can help track biker and runner
patterns to provide the Florida Department of Transportation important information for safety. Click on the link below

Dr. Steve Polzin, Director of CUTR’s Mobility Policy Research and Dr. Fred Mannering, professor of Civil and Envi-
ronmental Engineering at USF made the list for the top 10 transportation thought leaders in Academia. Eno partnered
with the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) to identify 10 of the most forward-looking transportation
academics in the field today. Congratulations!
On May 11, the Tampa Bay Clean Cities Coalition (TBCCC) hosted its Spring Stakeholder Meeting at Tampa Inter-
national Airport. More than 40 local stakeholders and members attended the meeting, which also served as an opportunity
to introduce a national workplace charging initiative and gain feedback from attendees on increasing electric vehicle (EV)
awareness in Tampa Bay. The event featured presentations from Drive Electric Florida, General Motors, NovaCharge, and
Tampa International Airport. Attendees were also treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the airport’s construction expan-
sion, EV charging stations, and 2-MW rooftop solar array.
TBCCC staff joined coalition members EPC of Hillsborough County, TECO Energy, Hillsborough County MPO & Planning
Commission, Tampa International Airport, and others earlier this month at the 2016 EPC Clean Air Fair. This outreach
event held downtown at Poe Plaza featured vendors, exhibitors, and activities that emphasized the value of clean air and
healthy environments.
