SACRED HEART PARISH IS SEEKING A DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has an opening for a full-time Director of Music. The successful applicant will work as a vital part of the parish staff team to bring the parish vision of ‘Inviting Everyone to Passionately Live the Gospel’ to realization, specifically through the work of sacred music. Tasks include coordinating music to enhance the liturgical services of the parish, including selecting music, playing the organ and piano for liturgies, directing choirs, coordinating cantors and accompanists, and maintaining the pipe organ and piano. A full job description can be found at sacredheartaberdeen.net/employment-opportunities. Interested candidates are asked to send a copy of their resume and an accompanying cover letter to Fr. Mark Lichter, Pastor of Sacred Heart, at [email protected], or by mail to 502 2nd Ave SE Aberdeen, SD 57401.

This year, we didn’t have a Ninth Week in Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time is the liturgical season that runs from the Baptism of the Lord until Ash Wednesday, and then again from Pentecost until the beginning of Advent. Our Lectionary has readings for thirty-four weeks of Ordinary Time, but most years, there are only thirty-three weeks. The reason is that the beginning and end of Ordinary Time vary from year to year. Easter is one of the moveable feast days. In western Christianity, Easter falls on the Sunday following the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. Easter can be as early as March 22, or as late as April 25. The Baptism of the Lord is also a moveable feast, falling on the first Sunday after January 6. The Baptism of the Lord can oc-cur as early as January 9 or as late as January 13.

On the Monday after the Baptism of the Lord, we begin the First Week in Ordinary Time, and continue moving through Ordinary Time until we hit Ash Wednesday. But when we return to Ordinary Time after Pente-cost, we don’t pick up where we left off. Instead, we count backwards from the week just before Advent. The week just before Advent is always the 34th week in Ordinary Time. All of which means that, each year, some portion of Ordinary Time is omitted. This year, we had a late Easter. Ash Wednesday fell on what would otherwise have been Wednesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time. And this year’s Advent begins on Sunday, December 1. The Thirty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time therefore runs from November 24 to November 30. Counting backwards from that final week of Ordinary Time, we find that the week after Pentecost — that is, the week beginning June 9 — would have to be the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. So this year, we didn’t have most of the Eighth Week of Ordinary Time, or any of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time. That’s bad news if you’re a fan of the Book of Tobit, because the Ninth Week of Ordinary Time is just about the only time that Tobit appears in the Lectionary. And if you didn’t follow all the counting, don’t worry. There’s a reason that we come out with calendars and ordos every year.
