EVENTSContinued from Page 3

The Jakeys describethemselves with aproper title: a Celtic

folk-rock band. It’s accurate, and all well

and good. But it doesn’t dothe Denton band’s sound jus-tice, somehow.

The local nine-piece pubrock ensemble certainly em-braces the treble-clef quali-ties of Celtic folk music.

The string work jigs andswaggers. The percussionthrobs like a heart on fire. The microphone is passedaround a group of artists whoaren’t troubled by techniqueor even a steady pitch. Thefiddle work ambles as lazilyas the vocal lines. Some of thelyrics are almost eye roll-inducing (“Paddy Wagon”doesn’t bother trying to purgeoff the worst cliches of Irish-ness. Or the best, dependingon your relationship to booz-ing and brawling). Almost.

The Jakeys’ music ismessy, and its musiciansaren’t about to apologize forthat. No worries, though. The melody is there, and you

can find it with an emptyshot glass in one fist and afresh pint in the other.

What their self-suppliedlabel doesn’t cover is thebare-knuckle bravado thatinhabits every song by thegroup. It’s worth noting thatthe Jakeys sound wildestwhen they sing together.Solos are sweet and some-what theatrical, but together, rock’s tortured soul shows upwith abrasions, chippedteeth and glory.

The Jakeys celebrate theband’s album, No SecondSpring, at this weekend’sshow. The album is as it says:temporal, celebratory andutterly undomesticated.

The Jakeys are nothing ifnot passionate about wring-ing every drop of life andpassion out of the here andnow, which is all we’re guar-anteed, brother. Hear it foryourself at 10 p.m. Saturdayat Dan’s Silverleaf.

If pristine vocals and prac-

ticed phrasing are your taste, skip this one. The Jakeysmake music for the repro-bates. Unsteadiness is part ofthe gamble.

COVER STORY

If Denton was a six-pack of beer, what would it taste like?

For upstart Denton brewers Bobby Mullins and Yianni Arestis, it would be four flavors of

lovingly crafted ale, each with a distinct flavor and char-

acter. Armadillo Ale Works has been brewing beer in the home garage of

Mullins, and Arestis camps out with his cohort in the sweltering room. The two-man team boils, brews, ferments and stores its beers a keg ata time.

The plucky duo isn’t deterred by Texas’ June heat. They just brewearly, before the temperature gets unbearable.

The Denton entrepreneurs were introduced to beer the old-fashioned way, they said. They went to college atthe University of North Texas. The college social scene is lubricated with cheap beer swilled from plastic cups.

“Yianni and I started outdrinking really crappy beer,”Mullins said. “From there, weboth got interested in betterbeer. My brother bought me ahome-brew kit for Christmas. That was it. It turned into apassion.”

That was six years ago. Hisfirst batch was a red ale thatMullins insists was too “dis-gusting” to serve to friends. Itdid put him on a learning curvethat hitches chemistry to ademanding palate.

Arestis remembers himselfas a cheap beer drinker whograduated to Shiner Bock andstayed there for a good longwhile.

“Our mutual friend Stephenis the first beer snob I met,” hesaid. “And then Bobby andStephen were always tryingnew beers. I started tryingthem, too. That’s when I reallystarted liking beer.”

Mullins studied radio, televi-sion and film at UNT, but whenhe graduated, he went to workfor St. Arnold BrewingCompany in Houston. Heworked there for three yearsbefore coming back to Dentonlast May. Mullins said thebrewing industry is a friendlyone. Brewers share informa-tion, techniques and opinionswith one another.

“I knew when I graduatedfrom UNT that I’d start somekind of business. I just didn’tknow what kind,” Arestis said.“The brewing industry is such agood industry — people wantto help each other out, and Iwant to be a part of it.”

Mullins agreed.“In the industry, brewers

look at it like we all do well ifone brewer does well,” he said.

The owners have experi-mented with a lot of brews, butdecided to master the four

beers they hope to distribute inlocal bars, restaurants andstores.

Beers fall under two maincategories: ales and lagers. Alesare made using malted barley, warm fermentation and brew-er’s yeast. Lagers are madeusing malted barley and arebrewed and stored at roomtemperature.

True to their namesake,Armadillo beers are ales — andthe owners plan to keep it thatway. That’s not to say theywon’t ever try to brew a lager, but their devotion is to ales.

When it comes to handcraft-ing a winning beer, Mullinssaid perfecting a flavor reallylies in having a plan.

“Just like cooking anything, you have to know what youwant to come up with,” he said.“Like if you want to bake a cake,

you’re not going to throwcayenne in it.”

Arestis said brewing beerrequires patience and a certaintolerance for failure.

“There is a trial-and-erroraspect to brewing,” he said.“When we’re developing a newbeer, we know what we want toend up with, but that doesn’tmean it tastes like you want itto on the first try. Sometimes, ittakes a few batches to get thebeer you want.”

The beer they want is a vari-ety of American craft brews, which means they use barleymalt and don’t add rice or corn, additives that bump up thealcohol percentage withoutadding flavor. It also meansthat Mullins and Arestis areconscious of craft beerdrinkers. Beer buffs — beer“snobs,” if you will — are alsointo food, and the ArmadilloAle owners intend to cater tothose shoppers with futurebeers.

“Something we definitely

want to do is host beer dinnerswith local restaurants, andserve our beers with dishesmade to go with them. That’ssomething we’d definitely liketo do,” Mullins said.

Arestis mentioned some-thing that might make beerlovers cheer: Armadillo ales arebrewed for specific seasons.Fall could bring an Armadilloale to sip while eating pumpkin

pie at Thanksgiving. Neither brewer is driven to

turn Armadillo Ale Works intoa big business.

“Right now, we’re glorifiedhome brewers. We want to staysmall and make really goodbeer,” Arestis said.

Bot, bot, botchedBy Boo AllenFilm Critic

For the greater good ofbrainless summer enter-tainment, Transformers:

Dark of the Moon rewrites his-tory, twisting heroic events intoa cheesy playground for theultimate (that is, until nexttime) battle between Autobotsand Decepticons.

That trip to the moon in July1969? It seems that was simplya ruse to cover up a crashed,out-of-sight spacecraft on themoon’s dark side. And theChernobyl nuclear disaster wasnothing more than a Russianattempt to hide more alienmachinery. As idiotic as all thissounds, some obviously share

the joke, as no less than BuzzAldrin pitches in with the sub-terfuge by taking a small speak-ing part.

With its huge budget allow-ing for even bigger, and louder, special effects, and a mostlyquality cast even in smallerroles, this Transformers deliv-

ers more of the same, which isexactly what its fans want —even while cynics point out itsrepetitive tiresomeness.

Director Michael Bay(motto: More is more.) takesEhren Kruger’s script simply asa framework from which hecan orchestrate the endless bat-tles between the feuding tribes,a Hatfield-McCoy grudge thatdefies rationality or explana-tion. The Autobots (good) stillroam the earth, seemingly pro-tecting us in case of an invasionfrom the Decepticons (bad).

When some of the hidden vil-lains, such as Sentinel Prime(voice of Leonard Nimoy),unveil their true identities andtheir actual aim to colonize

Earth and make its inhabitantsslaves, only Sam Witwicky (ShiaLaBeouf) can save the planet. So, with the help of his shape-shifting buddy Optimus Prime(voice of Peter Cullen), AgentSimmons (John Turturro) andnew girlfriend Carly (a blandRosie Huntington-Whiteleytaking the place of the unblandbut difficult Megan Fox), Samrushes around the country, fighting and feuding with Sen.Mearing (Frances McDor-mand), until he lands inChicago for the climactic bat-tles.

Despite how familiar every-thing seems and looks, the spe-cial effects set pieces can stillimpress. And complemented

by an urgency to save theworld, this Transformers most-ly succeeds in keeping ourattention throughout itslengthy running time. And, tohis credit, Bay actually filmedin 3-D, and did not simply addit later, thereby giving addedvisceral thrills to the actionsequences.

OPENING FRIDAYA Better Life (1/2) Fairly stan-

dard but touching story of Carlos

(Demian Bichir), an illegal Hispanic

immigrant in Los Angeles struggling

to survive doing menial jobs and

yardwork. Because he supports his

smarmy teenage son and wants

something better for him, Carlos

takes a chance on improving their

situation. It backfires, giving father

and son an impetus for the rest of

the movie. Involving and emotional, if

somewhat familiar. Rated PG-13, 98

minutes. At the Magnolia in Dallas. —

Boo Allen

Larry Crowne Laid off from his

big-box retail job, an everyman

(Tom Hanks) heads to his local col-

lege to start over. With Julia

Roberts, Cedric the Entertainer and

Taraji P. Henson. Written by Hanks

and Nia Vardalos. Directed by

Monte Carlo () Pop star Selena

Gomez takes her turn in a mistaken-

identity travelogue comedy aimed at

teens, as she sees a chance to rescue

her disastrous French vacation with

friends after being confused by

paparazzi for a spoiled heiress, allow-

ing her to jet to Monte Carlo for a

week of mischief and rich-girl pam-

pering. Gomez’s fans will enjoy see-

ing her in a dual role, and the film

itself has some mild laughs and

pleasant scenery. It’s just so familiar

and predictable from the get-go.

Rated PG, 108 minutes. — Todd

Jorgenson

Queen to Play (1/2) Warm,

touching, if not always believable

story about a French cleaning

woman (Sandrine Bonnaire) with a

newfound love of chess. A fusty

employer (Kevin Kline) tutors her

until she begins a second life, if not

career, playing tournament chess,

much to her family’s surprise and,

sometimes, annoyance. Her blos-

soming evinces multiple changes.

Not rated, 91 minutes. At the

Angelika Dallas. — B.A.

Troll Hunter () Low-budget

horror mixes with Scandinavian

deadpan humor in this amusing

monster movie from Norwegian

director Andre Ovredal that follows a

handful of college students as they

film the reclusive title character

(Otto Jespersen), who tries to con-

trol the country’s population of giant

trolls. The film borrows from several

other sources, both in story and

style, yet it has its share of goofy

thrills, especially during the intense

troll-hunting sequences. Not rated,

103 minutes. At the Texas Theatre in

Dallas. — T.J.
