Health Ministry News

This month, St. John’s Health Ministry connues to ad-dress the topic of shingles specifically, prevenon of the illness by means of vaccinaon. While the vaccine does not guarantee one of not geAng shingles, it can at least lessen complicaons and the severity of it. Two vaccines may help prevent shingles the chicken-pox (varicella) vaccine (for children and adults who have not had chickenpox) and the shingles (varicellazoster) vac-cine. People who have had chickenpox and are looking to receive the shingles vaccine have two opons: Zostavax and Shingrix. Shingrix was approved by the FDA in 2017 and is the preferred alternave to Zostavax. Studies sug-gest it offers protecon against shingles beyond five years. It is a nonliving vaccine made of a virus component, and is given in two doses, with two to six months between doses. Shingrix is approved and recommended for people age 50 and older, including those who have previously received Zostavax, which is not recommended unl age 60. For more informaon, checkout the Centers for Disease Control and Prevenon website at www.cdc.gov and the Mayo Clinic website at www.mayoclinic.org.
