13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Can You Help St. Vincent de Paul? The St. Vincent de Paul Society hopes you and your family and friends are well and safe. We hope you have everything you need to carry you through this difficult time … shelter, food, clothing, and household essentials. Many of our neighbors do not. Can you help us help them?

We are in dire need of volunteers at our Food Pantry as well as facemasks. We also need donations of gently used clothing, linens, kitchen and household goods. With the closing of our two Mission 27 Resale stores, we also need your financial support. Our drive-through food pantry is helping almost 1,000 families each day and increasing rapidly.

Many of us will be receiving a check for $1,200 from the economic stimulus package recently passed by the Senate. Some of us may not need this money. Some of us may want to give back to the families we serve. Can you help?

Please take a moment to go to our website www.svdpindy.org for more information on how you can help us help others. Please pray for St. Vincent de Paul and the people we serve. We’ll be praying for you, too.

Dear Parishioners:

I once had the privilege of taking a tour of Mission San Juan Bautista. Located about an hour south of San Francisco, the mission was founded 1797 to complement the many missions founded by St Junipero Serra (1713-1784). The tour

was led by the resident archaeologist whose professional career has been tied to the Mission and who worships in the mission church, a functioning parish since its founding.

The archaeologist related an interesting story that is relevant today. One day he was excavating a well in the courtyard of the Mission. A group of fourth graders was being led through the Mission as part of their California History class. One of the students inquired about an ugly, rusty, metal contraption shaped like a gridiron that had been leaned aside one of the buildings. The guide explained to the impressionable children that in the 1800’s Native Americans at the Mission were punished by being tied to the gridiron and beaten by the Franciscan friars who served there. Overhearing the exchange, the archaeologist popped out of the well and corrected the guide: “That device dates back to the 1950s. It is used to grill chicken at all our parish picnics.” Thus was blatant propaganda shown the light of historical fact.

A statue of St Junipero Serra in San Francisco was torn down last weekend by an angry, misguided mob. No doubt that a few in that mob had been taught anti-Catholic propaganda about the California Missions in general and St Junipero Serra in particular. Was the treatment of Native Americans by the Spanish military sometimes harsh and arbitrary? Yes. Did the Franciscan friars who staffed those missions participate in this harsh treatment? While the historical records do not exonerate every single Franciscan, history teaches us that the Franciscans were a moderating force in the California missions, calling out injustice among the military, helping Native Americans to become literate and skilled at the trades that would help them to thrive in the changing landscape of California. Most important, the Franciscans brought the Catholic faith to a people that had never before heard of Jesus Christ. The historical record does not show a single instance of St Junipero Serra mistreating Native Americans. In fact, the saint walked all the way to the seat of the Spanish government in Mexico City to obtain a bill of rights for them.

An archeologist earns a living by digging for the truth. May we do the same when confronted by revisionist history about the founders of our nation and the saints of our Church.

God bless,

Fr Mahan

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this momentreceive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

I was recently at a Catholic conference and had a conversation with someone living in the thick of Hollywood culture. He was Catholic and spoke of how hard it was to live out his faith amid tremendous temptation and negativity toward religion. He spoke about how going to daily Mass helped to keep him centered and stay strong in his faith. He was a great witness to living out one’s faith in the face of disbelief.

One thing that he told me stood out above all the rest. He spoke of his engagement to his fiancé and how important it was to him that God was a major part of their relationship and their lives as individuals as well. He told me he said something to her like, “If you don’t love Jesus more than you love me, this is never going to work.” What an amazing and truly moving witness!

Songs and books are written about the intense longing one human being can have for another. We can describe another as meaning everything to us. We speak of wanting to offer our complete selves to our beloved. However, true love is about more than wanting to be with that person. It is about wanting that person to know a love even greater than theirs: the love of God. No love can last without God. My Hollywood friend knew this to be the case. He showed his true love for his wife-to-be by sharing more than himself — he shared the very One who created love.
