What is the “Flipped Classroom?”
Classroom based teaching time and traditional homework time are
reversed (“flipped” )
How is this done?
• Students learn “basics” before they get to class through videos or other assignments
• Teacher spends more time on inquiry, discussion, collaboration, clarification and critical thinking during class time
Advantages for Students
• Personalized attention
• Differentiated instruction
• Expands total learning time
• Learn at own pace
• Can review material as needed
• Video & visuals can enhance understanding
Some Myths and Misconceptions
• Videos necessary– Can be online
simulations, webinars, podcasts, articles, or hands-on experiments
• Role of teacher diminished– Just the opposite; teacher
facilitates, differentiates, encourages higher order thinking
• Teacher must create videos– Many already online
– Student-created videos
