LIFELINES

The Second Vatican Council emphasized this truth of revelation by stating “By His incarnation, the Son of God has united himself in some fashion with every human being.” An assault on human life is really an assault on God himself! In The Gospel of Life, Blessed John Paul II reminded us that “this saving event reveals to humanity not only the boundless love of God who ‘so loved the world that He gave His only Son’ (Jn 3:16), but also the incomparable value of every human person.” ~ Archbishop Stefan Soroka, National Prayer Vigil for Life, Homily, Compline, January 22, 2012 United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, 2012

SPECIAL COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND Today we support the Holy Father in his charitable works. The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken up worldwide to support the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters and others in need of emergency assistance. Pope Benedict XVI has said, “It is necessary above all that every person be motivated by the authentic spirit of peace” (Homily, January 1, 2011). Cast the peace of Christ upon the world—please be generous in today’s collection.

PONTIFICAL MISSION SOCIETIES IN THE U.S.—LOCAL NEWS For the past (19) years the Scranton office of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the U.S. has been sponsoring faith-based mission experiences for groups of high school students, seminarians and adult chaperones. The purpose of these missions is to provide students and their chaperones with an opportunity to experience life among the poor, gain a greater understand-ing of their Catholic/Christian faith and other cultures, as well as a better perspective on their own lives when they return home. This summer, from July 10-21, our group of high school Juniors and their chaperones will be touching the lives of the poor in the Archdiocese of Castries in St. Lucia, West Indies. Some of their activities will include after-school activities for children and work at a soup kitchen run by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity Sisters, feeding centers and shelter for the homeless, an orphanage for children, and a home for the elderly. After the group returns home, the students will look for opportunities to share the experience at their schools, in their local communities and churches before going on to college. The cost for each person in the group is $ 1,500.00, which includes airline tickets, transportation to and from the airports and at the mission sites, lodging and meals for the two weeks. Participants in the group would be most appreciative of any help you might be able to give towards these expenses, and/or donations for the above-mentioned mission sites. Any cash donations earmarked for the mission sites will be distributed to the places of greatest need in the area being served. Thank you for whatever support you are able to give MAKAYLA DEARBORN, member of St. Brigid Parish, who will be a member of this group. Donations can be given directly to Makayla or placed in the collection basket in a marked envelope.

DCCW JUNE MESSAGE During the month of June, The Scranton Diocesan Council of Catholic Women would like to remind the faithful that the Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul on the 29th is the veneration of the two great Apostles that are the founders of the See of Rome witnessed through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom. They are the solid rock on which the Church was built. The examples of these two Apostles should remind us to stand firm in our faith and support the teachings of the Magisterium of the Church, which consists of the Pope and Bishops. A plenary indulgence may be gained on this day by anyone who makes devout use of a religious article blessed by the Pope or any Bishop and who also recites the Apostles Creed as long as the usual conditions for a plenary indulgence are satisfied.

“FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM INFORMATION” In their statement on Religious Freedom, “Our first most cherished liberty” the Catholic Bishops of the United States outlined their concerns over threats to religious freedom, both at home and abroad. To this end, Bishop Bambera calls upon all within the Diocese of Scranton to join Bishops throughout the United States to begin a 13 day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21st to July 4th, which highlights one of our country’s most treasured freedoms, the freedom to practice one’s religion without government interference. Beginning June 21st, this past Thursday, we began to say the prayer at the end of Mass entitled the “Prayer for Religious Liberty” and to preach on the theme of religious freedom. You will also see information in the Parish Bulletin and hear special prayers in the General Intercessions. In addition, Bishop Bambera will celebrate a special Mass of Faith and Freedom at St. Peter’s Cathedral at 10:00AM on Sunday, July 1st. We have also been asked to ring the church bells at noon on July 4th in support of religious freedom. It is a sad commentary on the state of our Country today when elected officials and those under them place their own ideals and values before the very fabric and core of our Nation and in direct conflict with the will of the majority of people. From now until July 4th, you will hear more on the subject. In the back of our Churches you will also find a Fact Sheet from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops entitled “Frequently Asked Questions on Religious Liberty.” Please take a copy home with you. If we run out of copies, more will be made, so please don’t hesitate in taking a copy.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT “We the faithful of the Roman Catholic Community of St. Brigid Parish, (St. Francis Xavier and St. Augustine Churches), in union with our Holy Father, the Pope, and the Diocese of Scranton, are called through baptism to share in the mission which Jesus Christ has entrusted to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We in this Faith Community, under the leadership of our Bishop and our Pastor, cooperate to proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the teaching of the Church, to celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, for the salvation of all, and to witness by grace to the Kingdom of God so as to promote a culture of life, justice and peace. We especially endeavor to foster spiritual growth and evangelization in our present and future generations by drawing parish members back to active participation.”
