Segue Party: Managing somehow to look exactly the same as he does today, then-Atlantic artist Neal McCoy (r) has some studio fun with then-KNIX/Phoenix morning-teamers (l-r) Tim Hattrick and Willy D. opened a run for B&D. She returned with “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia,” her current single “Going Out Like That” and “Whoever’s In New England.” Prior to “Hillbilly Deluxe,” Brooks & Dunn copped to trying to bring a hound onstage during the first show. “First night and last night,” Dunn lamented of the stubborn beast, that apparently had to be dragged onstage despite being well-rehearsed. “Never work with dogs and children,” Brooks said. “First rule of show business.” All three took to stools for an acoustic breakdown that included “If You See Him, If You See Her” and “Fear Of Being Alone.” Later, “I Believe” brought the crowd to its feet, and seats went equally unused on “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” “My Maria” and “Fancy.” The show closed with “Only In America” and a star spangled confetti shower. Confirmed dates remain in June, July and December (details here), but don’t be surprised if more are added. –Chuck Aly

Chart Chat Congrats to Kelsea Ballerini, Mike Wilson, Bill Macky, Steve Pleshe, Jane O’Malia, Joe Carroll, Megan Boardman and Taylor Weil on landing this week’s No. 1 with “Love Me Like You Mean It.” The song is Ballerini’s and Black River’s first chart-topper, and the first debut Country single from a woman to reach the chart pinnacle since Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take The Wheel” in 2006.

Reba with Brooks & Dunn

Kelsea Ballerini

Kudos as well to Keith Gale and the RCA crew for landing 33 adds on Miranda Lambert’s “Smokin’ And Drinkin’” to top this week’s board.

And 45 minutes later we had Kenny Chesney in the pitch dark with fireworks. Three completely different looks that worked perfectly. How did you choose the hosts, and how did they do? Finding hosts for an awards show is really hard – it’s live TV and some people are more into that than others. Erin Andrews is someone I’ve been thinking about for a while. She’s popular on FOX Sports and Dancing With The Stars, was an absolute pleasure to work with and a great comfort because we knew she would be

WPOC/Baltimore MD/morning co-host Jeff St. Pierre discusses his most influential music.1. Brad Paisley/Online: This was the first song I heard as I was driving to WPOC on my first day. I thought, “What am I getting myself into?” But it grew on me and I fell in love with it.2. Jimmy Eat World, Clarity: This album was unlike anything I had ever heard and inspired me in so many different ways. It is hands down my favorite album of all time and they are my favorite band.

3. Bryan Adams/Everything I Do, I Do It For You: When I was 10 years old I heard this on the radio. I had no idea who sang it or what it was called but I needed to know. So I listened to Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 the following Sunday. I woke up at 6am and listened to every minute – only to find that it was the No. 1 song that week.4. David Nail, I’m About To Come Alive: He has one of most incredible voices in country music. Every song is fantastic. It’s so rare for me to find an album I can listen to from start to finish without wanting to skip a track.5. The Beastie Boys, Hello Nasty Tour: It was my first major concert. I’d see local bands all the time, but the Beastie Boys concert showed me what being a performer was all about. It really pushed my love of music to the next level.•Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: Garth Brooks’ self-titled and No Fences albums. I’ll be honest, prior to joining the Country world in 2008 I had very little interest in country music. There are so many classics I haven’t gotten into yet. I’m working on it.•An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Don McLean’s “American Pie.” But when I was working for a classic rock station, it gave me plenty of time to run to the bathroom.•An album you played incessantly: Wade Bowen’s The Given. I would annoy my PD to no end trying to convince him to add songs to our playlist. He’s an incredible artist. •One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: All Time Low’s latest, Future Hearts. I’d suggest “Missing You” and “Runaways.”•Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: It’s embarrassing how many plays Jordin Sparks’ “Double Tap” has on my iTunes.

Cingle/Star Farm's Rainey Qualley puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WKSF/Asheville and WFBC/Asheville. The first time I heard myself on the radio was the first day of my radio tour. We'd stopped at WIVK/Knoxville. There's a video on my Instagram of me listening to the recorded version. It was awesome. My favorite person to travel with is my sister, Sarah Margaret. She's my best friend. If she were here, these long car

rides would be more enjoyable. Not that I don't enjoy my band mates, who are in the car flipping me off right now! I really love peanut butter. At the hotels in the morning, I steal a couple of packets and put them in my purse. I don't know if this is redneck or just lazy, but every time we leave a station and I'm done for the day, I immediately change into sweatpants. Right now I'm in the car wearing a dress but it's underneath a big sweatshirt and sweatpants. I always take Emergen-C with me on the road. I drink it every morning. Waking up early and traveling all the time, I have to do what I can to keep from getting sick. I get a little uncomfortable when people ask a lot of questions about my mom [actress Andie MacDowell]. I'm very proud of her. I'm not trying to hide the fact that I'm her daughter, but I want to be able to do things on my own merit. I wish I had written Willie Nelson's "Always On My Mind." It's one of my favorite songs to sing. It has a tremendous melody and the lyrics are so honest and heartfelt. It's poetic without trying too hard. It's a perfect song.

Rainey Qualley

OFF THE RECORD: RAINEY QUALLEYfast on her feet. Brittany Snow became a very attractive candidate with the success of Pitch Perfect 2. We want to get people of the moment as hosts or someone with really good chops. By putting a seasoned actress with a seasoned broadcast professional, it felt like the best of both worlds. We were really happy. Brittany had one spot of dead air. She wasn’t cued properly. Right at that moment the stage manager was hit in the head by a fan and got distracted. Brittany was standing there for five seconds before the camera man jumped in and cued her. Other than that it was pretty flawless. How did the comedy clips come together? The motif for the films of everyone taking Uber – only in Nashville it’s Guuber – that came to me as I was walking out of the truck after last year’s show. I told a couple people but couldn’t imagine someone wouldn’t come with that idea in a year’s time. But no one did – Fallon, Kimmel, nobody. I got lucky. Having a clever idea helps with talent, and our talent producer Suzanne Bender was integral in getting that done. And once you get one big star, a lot more will follow. We booked Arnold Schwarzenegger and Justin Bieber on the same day. It was like, bingo! We got it. Adding Rick Springfield was so unexpected and he was such a good sport. Why did you pair Alan Jackson with Steven Tyler? We started with them in the Guuber skit, Steven driving Alan around. Then we said, let’s experiment and put Alan in the front seat and have them sing “Don’t Rock The Jukebox.” It was sort of an inside-the-industry joke having the singer of the American Rolling Stones singing the line, “My heart ain’t ready for the Rolling Stones.” Then, out of nowhere, Alan goes, “What about this one?” And he starts this corny version of “Walk This Way.” That was all Alan and completely improvised. Who knew he had such a great sense of humor? Priceless. Which performances stood out to you? Carrie Underwood was over the top, of course. But the two

breakouts for me were Sam Hunt and Jake Owen. Jake, his management and the label had the wherewithal and conviction to help with production to give him a chance to do what Luke Bryan and Little Big Town have done on this show in recent years. Luke had a breakout moment with us on “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” with a lot of choreography and dancers, and LBT did the same with “Pontoon,” bringing in a boat and really standing out. “Real Life” was

able to do the same thing for Jake because all the entities went the extra mile, and Jake owned it. The choreography was a little risky for him because he’d never done it before, but he hit it out of the park. Sam’s “House Party” was just the perfect song at the perfect moment for

what we are as a show. He came out dressed in white, the band was in white and he fed off the audience doing what he does. He really took advantage of his first full-song performance on an awards show. But really, there wasn’t a flat performance all night. Ratings were down this year. How concerning is that? [Viewership] always builds over several days. And our overall cume was up from previous years in a challenging ratings environment. We were coming off a month with more music shows than ever – iHeart’s country show, the Billboard show, ACM Duets. There was lots of competition on broadcast TV in May, so there may have been some viewer fatigue. We were slightly down in the premiere, but with cable you make it up on reruns and 17 million people ended up watching it over the course of the next few days. You don’t get reruns on broadcast TV. We used to get the numbers at 11am the next morning and

that was that, but it’s not accurate to judge from that anymore. So many people are using DVRs, watching on mobile devices or online. We’re just like the recorded music business in finding new ways to be ubiquitous. And let’s not forget, this was the first time we put the show on another channel at the same time – TV Land. So that ate some of the [premiere] numbers. We also simulcast on 124 iHeartMedia stations, so more people heard the show than ever before. And cume is what matters to advertisers. So another successful show... It was a tremendous success on many levels. I’m biased, but I was really happy with it, which is the curse and the burden. How do you top it? We have about 30 seconds to pat ourselves on the back before we look at next year and try to figure out how to beat it. –Chuck Aly CAC
