Quotation of the month:

“Everything that’s complicated is useless. Everything useful

is simple.”

Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov

Russian arms designer 1919 - 2013

Reminder: July 8th is the club’s Quarterly Meeting. Everyone is encouraged

to attend, as there is much going on at the range in which everyone should

be interested. Members are also able to vote at quarterly meetings, so

come on out and let your voice be heard.

Gate Status: Larry Meadows, who is spearheading the project, reports that all parts are in for the gate installations and work will begin soon. He is

working closely with the contractor, EZ Door Lift Systems, to get all the membership cards entered into the electronic system. This has been a

major undertaking and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we get

through the project. Until then, remember that the current gate com-

bination remains in effect until you receive your new electronic card.

Work Day: Executive Officer Dennis Chambers has called a work day for July 13 from 8 am till noon. Bring hand tools, power tools and something

to hydrate yourself with. We will work on the Cowboy Action range to repair and restructure the overhead canopy, which must be completed

before the work below the canopy can continue. Dennis reports the last

workday on May 25 accomplished the ditching work to get electrical power to the new maintenance shed and the shop is now wired. Thanks to

those who turned out to get this done.

Range Safety Issue: Mel Ralston, Chairman of the Shotgun Committee, and Jerry Maxfield, Range Safety Officer, remind all shotgunners that

when the east and west trap houses are in use simultaneously, these

fields MUST shut down when the other field goes downrange to fill or clear the trap machines. We cannot and will not allow firing to continue with anyone downrange.

Some Good Advice: This year the range is particularly thick with ticks for some reason. They’re always here, of course, but not usually in these numbers. It is strongly recommended that you use an effective bug and tick repellent. Make sure the product contains at least a good percentage of the ingredient Permathrin. Mel Ralston advises those who rely on DEET that the ticks “bathe in it.” Mel says be sure you spray the permathrin

product on your clothes only, not on your skin! It is a neurotoxin. Last year a member got a tick bite that resulted in swelling, a rash and a trip to the

emergency room followed by a course of antibiotics. Check yourself carefully.

CKGC Cares: We all remember the April 29 shooting of Rice County Sheriff

Bryant Evans and Undersherrif Chad Murphy by a man who later shot his

father and himself. Sheriff Evans’ injury was serious but allowed him to

Page 3: June, 2019 Newsletter Quotation of the month - CENTRAL KANSAS GUN CLUB … · 2019-06-23 · Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov Russian arms designer 1919 - 2013 Reminder: July 8th

return to duty fairly soon. Undersheriff Murphy was not as fortunate. He

is still recovering from his wound. Meanwhile his out-of-pocket medical

expenses continue to mount. In consideration of these circumstances Central

Kansas Gun Club has contributed $1,000.00 to his recovery fund. On June 4

club President Trey Owston and Safety Officer Jerry Maxfield traveled to

Lyons where Trey presented the club’s check to Sheriff Evans for transfer to

Undersheriff Murphy. Murphy was unable to attend due to ongoing medical

care in Wichita. These courageous officers exemplify the highest standard of

law enforcement. Both Evans and Murphy have been invited to address the

club at a time to be determined.

Murphy.

Great News: This month the Editor wishes to highlight the accomplishments of several club shooters and associated youth. These news items would usually

fall in the respective discipline reports, but because they are noteworthy and

because they have happened almost simultaneously around the range and the country, we think it appropriate that they be presented to the reader as one package near the top of the newsletter in this instance. This should serve as a

reminder to all that this club has within its ranks some very serious shooters

who don’t always get the recognition they deserve. Every club member should

take pride in the successes of these shooters, who have represented this club

with honor and distinction, in the same way we are proud of every member

who does the best they can with every pull of the trigger. These appear in no

particular order of importance.

To Begin With: we think it appropriate to start with our younger shooters. The Nickerson High School Trap Team, who finished First in Class 1A,

Conference 4, has qualified five shooters and two alternates for the USA Clay

Target Championships to be held July 10th -14th in Mason, Michigan, hosted by

the Michigan Trapshooting Association. Team members are Joe Tuxhorn, Eric

Malecki, Jordan Schmidt, Mathew Meadows and Jacob Meadows. Alternates

are Clayton Edwards and Jacob Snyder. It is also impressive that NHS

shooter Lawrence Tuxhorn, who would have been the next shooter chosen, will

go to the championships on is own dime. Team coaches are Head coach Travis

Oden, Larry Meadows, Larry Tuxhorn and Jeff Harbert. Our congratulations

to the team and coaches and they take our best wishes with them. Nearer to

home, NHS will send All-State shooters Joe Tuxhorn (68th) and Eric Malecki

(72nd) to the Kansas State High School Clay Target League Championships

held

June 15th and 16th on the Kansas Trap Association ranges in Sedgwick, Kansas.

There are 74 teams in the shoot with more than 1,400 shooters.

Buhler High School also has eight shooters going to the Kansas State High

School Clay Target League Championships. We regret that at this time we do

not have the complete list of shooters and coaches. Moreover, Haven High

School is sending nine shooters to State. They are shooting with us for the

moment since they usually shoot with the Eaton Gun Club, which is flooded.

Nickerson/Buhler High School Trap Teams Host Open House: On

Sunday, June 2, the teams had a perfect day for their end-of-the season

open house event, open to both members and the public. More than two

hundred people attended the come-and-go event. A hearty lunch was served,

trap and Five Stand were shot, and a great time was had by all. During the

course of the event the teams raised $500.00, which was turned over to CKGC

as a token of the team’s appreciation for use of the club’s shotgun ranges. It

should be noted this is not the first time the team has done so. Very generous,

indeed. NHS Head Coach Travis Oden said he was pleased with the turnout

and the way the young shooters performed. “The kids are doing great,” he

said.

4H Shooting Sports: Ray Bartholomew reports the young shooters are showing a great deal of enthusiasm for the shooting and outdoor sports.

As of this writing there are 47 shooters signed up for Small Bore Rifle, 10

for Small Bore Pistol, 18 for Hunting Skills, 34 for Shotgun, 7 for Western

Heritage (black powder) and 35 for Archery.

In furtherance of these programs the Reno County Fair Board will hold a

gun raffle at the Reno County Fair Ranch Rodeo and BBQ to be held on

Friday, July 19. See the flyer below for particulars. Let’s get out there

and support this event.

Hitchsmann Scores Well at National Shoot: CKGC club member and .22 Precision Chairman Jeremy Hitschmann turned in a great 3rd Place score in the Open Class at the National Rifle League Championship shoot at the Desert Sportsman’s Rifle Club in Las Vegas, Nevada May 25 and 26. Shooters fired 20 stages in the two days at ranges from 25 to 330 yards and from various shooting positions. Jeremy credits his marksmanship to “plenty of shooting.”

Wineland Legs Out: Member Matt Wineland continues his meteoric rise through the ranks of High Power shooters, earning the last points to become a Distinguished shooter at the Kansas State Rifle Association Excellence in

Competition CMP “Leg” Match fired on our High Power range on Sunday,

May 26 with a smokin’ score of 482 – 9X. He was also the Match winner.

Matt has also recently earned a High Master rating from the NRA side of

the High Power Rifle Division. Considering that he is only in his third year

of High Power competition, these are tremendous achievements..

Special thanks to Amos Pauley and Dennis Chambers for volunteering to

make up the minimum number of shooters to constitute a recognized

“Leg” match and to Staff Sergeant Lawrence Carter who drove all the way from Fort Bliss at El Paso, Texas, to shoot with us.

Greg Dick Still The Gifted Shooter: Greg has completed his annual pilgrimage to Columbia, Missouri for the Bianchi Cup competition with a couple of other matches making a real tour of it. On May 19 he fired the

Flagler Cup at Bates City, Mo., firing a 1912 X 154 for 10th overall out of 100 shooters and was Second Place Senior. On to Columbia May 23, 24

and 26 he continued to shoot well. On the 23rd and 24th Bianchi Cup

Page 12: June, 2019 Newsletter Quotation of the month - CENTRAL KANSAS GUN CLUB … · 2019-06-23 · Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov Russian arms designer 1919 - 2013 Reminder: July 8th

competition he fired a 1894 X 150 for 34th out of 150 shooters and 7th Senior. He fired 3rd overall with the Zero Team. On the 26th at Columbia he fired the Cameron Cup, turning in 1914 X 153. Peviously, on April 12th he fired the Crawfish Cup at Lake Charles, La., where he fired 6th overall out of 100 shooters. This combined with the Flagler Cup and the Cameron Cup constitute the Triple Cup Challenge, during which he fired a total score of 5732 X 458. High score was 5758 X 545. He shot for cash and merchandise

prizes, bringing home his usual bag of swag. Well done Greg.

Notes From The Field: We have had recent communication from a nomadic member who, from an abundance of modesty, chooses the pseudonym “Phil

Schutzenfartz.” We learn that a recent swing through the Northeast,

Atlantic coast and Southeastern states brought satisfying scores. After a brief respite to rest and reload we last heard from him in the Wyoming, Idaho and Montana area. Leaving Wyoming he writes as follows:

“Backtracking to the Rifleman Club bar in Rawlins, Wyoming, I stopped off for a beer at 8 am on the way our of town, and it did not disappoint. (Note

to the reader– this interesting little establishment opens at 6 am and closes at

2 am – ed). “There were three guys in the bar, one of whom proved to be the bartender, engaged in shooting pool, specifically some kinda three-man game the details of which I did not enquire. After they got done and the two non-bartenders left, I asked the barkeep about the history of the place.”

“Turned out, his daddy bought it in 1969 and they were celebrating

their 50th year. It was just called the Club Bar back then, and his daddy added the Rifleman to the name when he got it. He was not sure how long it had been around before that, but many, many years.”

Page 13: June, 2019 Newsletter Quotation of the month - CENTRAL KANSAS GUN CLUB … · 2019-06-23 · Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov Russian arms designer 1919 - 2013 Reminder: July 8th

“An 1886 Winchester, long barrel and curved butt, placarded as being made in 1891, was racked behind the bar as were two ‘94 carbines,

one obviously much older than the other, and two .410 double

shotguns, one with hammers. Scattered around the bar were an

assortment of other shotguns, at least two 1897’s and quite a few

older single and double guns, in various conditions and states of

completion. A Stevens Crackshot was cradled by a bear cub, and numerous heads of deer, pronghorn and elk graced the walls along

with several African heads including a rhino. Unknown if the rhino

was real because it didn’t look big enough for that, but how should I

know?”

“Obviously cobbled up was a double-headed hyena in a full body mount complete with saddle. Several other saddles were scattered

about, along with snow shoes, skis, spurs, old lever scales and

Gawd only knows what all else, except that there was a lot of it. It

was a bit overwhelming.”

Phil suggests this is what CKGC could be in an alternate universe.

Shotgun: Mel Ralston reports a few water issues with the trap houses, but nothing serious. By the time this reaches you our latest load of

targets will have arrived and been stored in the target shed. Mel

also advises the PAT trap is down and he is awaiting parts.

3-Gun: The were 6 shooters for the May 19 shoot. Next shoot is June 16. Set-up at 8:30, shoot at 10. Shooters are expected to help. For
