Over the last month in various settings, sometimes formal classes on Tuesday or Wednesday, or much less formal standing by the water fountain, the discussion of what it means to be Jewish has come up. Each of us understands that term a little differently and I welcome your comments. As we are approaching summer, we feel more energy to do more, and nature and the city provide more to do. One great thing about Judaism is that we are a people of action—we get to “Do Jewish”. Our job is to meld together our Jewishness with our Americanness. There is a plethora of ways of doing just that. Here are just a few: Set an alarm or ring tone to modah ani, (I am grateful) so that we are reminded frequently of all the beauty which surrounds us. Download “DuoLingo” app and learn/remind yourself of our shared Hebrew language. Create a music playlist which is filled with Jewish, Israeli, liturgical, and other cultural music. Create a gratitude box and place a note in it every day; modim anachnu lachwe thank You June 2019 - 27 Iyar - 27 Sivan 5779 Rabbi Jackson's Message (Rabbi continued on page 2)

  • Over the last month

    in various settings,

    sometimes formal

    classes on Tuesday or

    Wednesday, or much

    less formal standing

    by the water fountain,

    the discussion of what

it means to be Jewish has come up.

Each of us understands that term a

little differently and I welcome your

    comments.

    As we are approaching summer,

we feel more energy to do more,

and nature and the city provide more

to do. One great thing about

Judaism is that we are a people of

action—we get to “Do Jewish”. Our

job is to meld together our

    Jewishness with our Americanness.

There is a plethora of ways of doing

just that. Here are just a few:

Set an alarm or ring tone to modah ani, (I am grateful) so that we are reminded frequently of all the beauty which surrounds us. Download “DuoLingo” app and learn/remind yourself of our shared Hebrew language. Create a music playlist which is filled with Jewish, Israeli, liturgical, and other cultural music. Create a gratitude box and place a note in it every day; modim anachnu lach—we thank You

    PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Agudas Chai Lites page 2 June 2019

Our current Mitzvah Opportunity is donating socks for children to teens for IAM…look for the SOCK HOP collection box in the social hall. Please note the new Shabbat summer schedule from Shavuot to Rosh Hashanah on page three. MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING ON SUNDAY, JUNE 16,10AM sharp. We will review our accomplishments on the Strategic Plan that was presented at the last annual meeting. The Finance Committee will be making a presentation of the budget for 2019-2020. A light breakfast/brunch will be served after the business portion of the meeting. The MOUNTAIN JEWISH FESTIVAL is upon us, JUNE 23, NOON TO 4PM. It literally takes a village to make this happen. Thank you to our co-chairs, Karen Murray and Randye Unsell for their dedication; Linda Perkel and Sam Gess and their “ad team” for running around town getting the ads for our Guidebook; Our Balabusta co-chairs: Natalie Zitnick and Joan Kershner for organizing and preparing all of the delicious goodies; Logistics: David Monoson and Alan Cooper are getting us ready for a big crowd; and Sound Tech: Sid William, preparing for the entertainment; and all of our members who have worked on committees and are helping on that day. If you have not already done so, please sign up to volunteer for the 23

rd…this is really an “all hands on

deck” event. Shalom, Bonnie Cooper, President [email protected]

In an effort to keep our congregants informed and be more transparent, we will run this column with pertinent information that occurred at the Board meetings. At our monthly Board meeting on Tuesday,May 14, 2018, the following was discussed: The Social Committee has postponed the May 31

st BBQ Pot Luck dinner until later in the

summer. The Ritual Committee presented to the Board a new time schedule for the Summer Shabbat Services, which was approved by your Board of Trustees. See page three of this Chai Lites for more details. Brotherhood Shabbat is scheduled for Friday, June 14

    th, 5:30 Pre-Neg and 6pm service.

The Finance Committee made an excellent presentation to the Board of Trustees with proposals, recommendations and motions for the next fiscal year July 2019-June 2020. We thanked them for their many hours of preparation. There are several approved motions that will be presented at the Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 16 at 10am. Your absentee ballots, along with the proposed budget, have been mailed to you. Please RSVP to the office to say you will be there. If you cannot attend the meeting, please be sure to return your ballot. The MOUNTAIN JEWISH FESTIVAL, June 23, Noon to 4pm, is finalizing all of the details for the event. Please sign up to volunteer and order your t-shirt. Don’t miss the event of the year! Bring your friends and neighbors. The Membership Committee has tentatively scheduled their next Perspective Member Brunch for August 25

    th.

An updated Policies and Procedure manual continues to be worked on. Contact me if you have any questions …

Thanks, Bonnie Cooper, President [email protected]

If you travel, be sure to check out some Jewish sites: museums, synagogues, cemeteries, restaurants. Read a book by a Jewish author with Jewish content (check out our amazing Agudas Israel library for some good ones). Make Jewish food, especially the kind you are already not familiar with. Choose one ritual mitzvah and practice it; keep a journal on your progress. Have a scavenger hunt with Biblical names/places/people around town…i.e. “Hebron” street. Write your own alternative interpretation of one of our liturgical pieces. Finally, at the end of the day, be kind, love the

stranger. In fact, we are told 36 times in the Torah to

“Love the stranger”…double chai. Your life and theirs.

When all other rituals and traditions and cultural

elements are put aside, it is with this phrase that we

are left. Simply, purely, openly: “love the stranger”.

    B’shalom (in peace)

    BROTHERHOOD BRIEFS

After months of collecting household items, storing and setting up, the Brotherhood yard sale on April 28th was a huge success. Over $2000 profit was made, which will help Agudas with its budget this year. Many thanks go out to Sam Gess and Jerry Salatino, and a dozen other Brotherhood and Sisterhood members for their participation and support. We could not have done this without you. With the yard sale over, life now settles down to just busy. After our May 26th Brotherhood breakfast we have June 14th (Friday) Brotherhood Sabbat being organized by Michael Thorz, June 16th (Sunday) Agudas Annual Meeting, and the Mountain Jewish Festival on June 23th (Sunday). Other than the Annual Meeting we need a lot of volunteers. Please see Michael Thorz, Alan Cooper or David Monoson to sign up for the various events. Hoping everyone has an enjoyable and safe

    summer.

Karen's Korner A message from our Sisterhood President Please help me welcome our newest board members, Cynthia Gottham and Karen Jarmon. Both Cynthia and Karen were approved by the Board of Trustees and the General Sisterhood Membership. We look forward to having them serve on our Board as Trustees. Thank you both for taking on your new roles. We were treated to a wonderful presentation by author, Margery Diamond. Her book, “Torah and Trails”, gave us a new understanding and appreciation of our environment and how it relates to Judaism. She enchanted us with her beautiful photography. You will have the opportunity to view the book in our library. Your Sisterhood works very hard to support our wonderful congregation and all the many activities, events, and community involvement interests of Agudas Israel. In order for us to be successful, we need everyone’s help. If you’re called upon to help with the Sisterhood’s monthly Oneg, please say yes. You don’t have to bake. You could offer to purchase cheese and crackers or a fruit tray. Remember,

“Nobody can do Everything, But Everyone can do something”. We are looking for a few members to help with sorting the table clothes when they come back from the cleaners. We also need a few members to help keep our pantry straightened. Both jobs can be done at your convenience, on a monthly basis. If you are willing and able to help out, please contact me. We have many generous members who make special donations which allow us to assist congregants who are unable to afford a Sisterhood membership or the cost of an event/activity. If you would like information, please contact me directly. This will be completely confidential. A Sisterhood Membership should not be a hardship for anyone. If you would like more information about membership, please contact Marlene Wiener, at [email protected]. Join the fun and share in the camaraderie! Feel free to contact me at any time with your questions or suggestions,
