June 2018 Newsletter Summer is officially here! And along with higher temperatures it brings the greatest variety of fruits we see all year long. Not only are fruits a fantastic source of fiber , vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, they are full of water to help keep your body hydrated. Beat the heat with the top 5 “cool” summer fruits! • Watermelon is 92% water! Buy pre-cut or slice yourself for a refreshing summer snack. • Strawberries! A favorite with kids, they are 92% water just like watermelon. Blend into a puree, pour into popsicle molds, and freeze for a frosty dessert. • Cantaloupe! This picnic staple is 90% water. Get your hands on a melon baller; the kids can help scoop out the cantaloupe and pop in the freezer for a quick icy treat. • Peaches! Although they’re called a “stone fruit” peaches are 88% water. Get creative and instead of just biting into a peach, slice one and use to add sweetness to a summer salad. • Raspberries! These little guys are 87% water. Brew green tea, chill and add a drop of essential oil like lavender, or some sliced cucumber. Keep little spray bottles of the mist in your bag, car, and fridge for whenever you and the kids need a quick reset. 3. Cover up! Whether it’s a baseball cap or a straw fedora, hats are a way for you and the kids to get that extra layer of sun protection and make a fashion statement. 4. Reach for the aloe! Aloe vera gel is excellent for soothing sunburns and moisturizing the skin. You can find the whole leaf at most grocery stores and squeeze the gel fresh or buy it bottled. If you have space you can even grow your own aloe vera. 5. Always have water! Invest in stainless steel water bottles. This way you can stay hydrated all day and don’t have to worry about exposure to plastics.
