WEBSITES Prayer Windows

The site has been developed by Fr Robert Gilroy SJ: artist, Jesuit priest, Hospital, Dialysis Centre and gaol chaplain.

The site provides sections on Art and Prayer, Online Retreat, Gallery and Creative Experiences. Fr Gilroy’s art is vivid, often abstract, thought provoking and challenging.

Daniel P. Horan, OFM • videos

Franciscan friar, scholar, author, and speaker. At only 32 Fr Dan already has an impressive resume of books, articles, blog, social media and YouTube channel.

The latter has an excellent series of presentations on the Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Francis, The Joy of Love, and the encyclical On Care of Our Common Home.

He is an excellent speaker: clear, articulate and engaging. Highly recommended.

His website has information and links to all his books. Reviewing The Last Words of Jesus: A Meditation on Love and Suffering, Richard Rohr OFM writes: ‘Jesus’ and Francis’ starting point was not sin, but suffering, the suffering of the world and even the suffering of God. This creates a very different perspective on the Christian Gospel, and I think you will find it here! Dan Horan makes the sublime simple and beautiful, which is surely the Franciscan way.’

The Catholic Collective • new project of the Youth Evangelisation Office

The Catholic Collective is made up of the many diverse Catholic youth initiatives in the Archdiocese of Brisbane who evangelise young people. It is aimed at high schoolers and young adults (18-30). With over 80 youth initiatives, the Catholic Collective is not a new ministry, but rather a platform to connect young people in the Archdiocese of Brisbane with a youth initiative that is right for them.

The team from the Youth Evangelisation Office for the Archdiocese of Brisbane has done a great job developing a one-stop shop for parish youth groups, young adult groups, movements, tertiary ministries, social justice opportunities, ethnic communities, as well as other faith communities and events.

On the ‘Directory’ page simply type in a postcode and up comes a range of ‘youth initiatives’ within the search radius – with a helpful map and contact details.

The ‘Events’ page provides a calendar for the current month. Hover over an event to reveal a pop-up with a photo and further details.

There are also links to the Catholic Collective Facebook page, Instagram and social media.

Evangelisation Brisbane • Online Store Refresh

Over the last six months Donna and Matt have been doing an amazing job with the new website for Evangelisation Brisbane.

The new online store is now up and running: streamlined, efficient and simple to use. As well as great resources to buy (a number discounted) there is also a great range of free resources you can download. For any ‘planning group’ there is the excellent Team Book; along with Parish Council Handbook, Pope Francis: Mercy Matters and God’s Love Poured Out - Prayer and Reflections ... and many other free resources.

Living Biblically • Mercy in the Scriptures

The Living Biblically series kicked off in April; this year with a focus on mercy in the scriptures.

The first session is now available as video and audio. In this session Archbishop Mark uses broad brush strokes on a wide canvas. The landscape that emerges is of God who is mercy – not as a noun, ie ‘mercy’ as an attribute of God, but rather as a verb. Mercy is the very action of who God is. This first session highlights how this ‘Mercy-God’ calls the people of Israel to be the living embodiment of mercy from Genesis right through to the New Testament.

Session One

For anyone who missed the first series, Living Biblically in a Secular World, the seven sessions are available on the Archdiocese of Brisbane YouTube channel.

National RCIA • Christian Initiation Australia Network

The website for the national RCIA organisation, Christian Initiation Australia Network, has had a major revision and redesign. The Christian Initiation Australia Network organises a national conference every two years (Perth in October), promotes state conferences, publishes a bimonthly eNews, Network News, and maintains a website of resources for parishes and back copies of the Network News.

The national executive (members from Brisbane, Townsville, Darwin, Broken Bay, Melbourne, Wagga Wagga and Perth) has been hard at work creating new content and a cleaner, simpler design.

Fr Stephen Bevans SVD • videos

Fr Stephen Bevans SVD is a renowned teacher, author and theologian. He is Professor Emeritus at Catholic Theological Union. He has given keynote presentations and seminars around the world. Below are links to just a few of these:

Dreaming of a ‘Missionary Option’ Keynote address at the national Catholic Mission conference in 2015. Fr Bevans reflects on key themes in The Joy of the Gospel and asks ‘What does it mean for mission?’

Dreaming of a ‘Missionary Option’ (33 mins)

Vatican II and the Church’s Mission What if we woke up one morning and discovered that the Second Vatican Council had never happened? We would discover that … there would be little or no lay ministry in the Church, that we would have no liturgy in our own language; that there would be little or no reading of the Bible, that most people would still believe that there is no salvation outside the Church.

This is one of a number of excellent videos on the website of the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. For other videos: http://learn.ctu.edu/

Vatican II and the Church’s Mission (56 mins)

A God of Mercy, A People of Mercy In these two talks he explores contemporary issues for the Church and our Christian mission to the world through the lens of mercy. His presentation is engaging and he quotes from a diverse range of sources – Shakespeare, poets, popes and novelists as well as scripture – to illustrate and illuminate his message. (Sponsored by Evangelisation Brisbane and St Maximilian Kolbe Parish (Marsden Kingston).

The Nine Essential Strategies for Making Lifelong Disciples • Online Training Course

‘How do I become Catholic?’ That’s the question seekers often ask us. Too often, we fail to go deep enough to find out what they are really asking. On the lips of the catechist the first proclamation must ring out over and over: ‘Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen, and free you.’ (The Joy of the Gospel, 164)

The first proclamation (or the kerygma) can be described as a story with three major parts, each with subparts, for a total of nine steps.

Nick Wagner* and Diana Macalintal, founders of TeamRCIA, have developed a new advanced training that walks you through each of the nine core teachings required to make life-long disciples. This online course is for: RCIA team members; catechists; pastors; pastoral leaders. You will have access to the course for one full year. You can proceed at your own pace. If you spend an hour a week on the course, you will probably complete it in 5-7 weeks.

• The training is completely online, accessible from your computer, tablet, or smart phone. • It is organized into four modules with three to four lessons in each module. • Each lesson includes a 5- to 10-minute video and PDF and audio-only transcripts of each lesson.

What this in-depth course includes: • 13 online training videos • Full transcripts ready to print • Complete audio to download and listen to anywhere • All online and easy to access • Work at your own pace • Bonus resources

The registration fee for the complete course (4 modules) is just (US) $53.99.

Further information / Registration (*Nick will be the keynote speaker at national RCIA conference in October and in dioceses around Australia in September.)

Merciful and Kind • Dr Nora Amath

In The Face of Mercy (Misericordiae Vultus) Pope Francis writes:

Among the privileged names that Islam attributes to the Creator are “Merciful and Kind”. This invocation is often on the lips of faithful Muslims who feel themselves accompanied and sustained by mercy in their daily weakness. I trust that this Jubilee year celebrating the mercy of God will foster an encounter with these religions [Islam and Judaism] …. (23)

These two videos, presented by Dr Nora Amath, are one way we can ‘foster an encounter’ with Islam and ‘open us to … dialogue’.

Dr Amath recently completed her PhD at Griffith University, looking at how Muslim civil society organisations have responded to the socio-political context in Australia. She currently chairs AMARAH (Australian Muslim Advocates for the Rights of All Humanity).

These videos were recorded by Evangelisation Brisbane and the Council for Ecumenism and Inter-religious Relations.

Bible Institute for Everyday Living

The Bible Institute for Everyday Living is an initiative of Petrie parish. In its 11th year the purpose of this year’s event is to make sound up-to-date teaching on the Scriptures available to everyday Christians within and beyond the Brisbane Archdiocese. It is a place of learning surrounded by prayer, rich in blessings and steeped in an atmosphere of welcome, hospitality and friendship.

This year we will learn about Paul – his world, background and key ideas. Paul comes across as someone who experienced life to the full and who struggled with many of the same challenges that we face today.

Page 8: June 2016 Websites Year of Mercy Seminars Events Resources ...evangelisationbrisbane.org.au/assets/uploads/the-vine-june-2016.pdf · June 2016 Websites Year of Mercy Seminars Events

8

The schedule of the Bible Institute allows ample time to chat and make new friends or catch up with familiar faces, but more importantly it creates a space where we can grow in knowledge, understanding and application of the scriptures.

The Bible Institute is an excellent faith formation opportunity, a chance to reflect and ask ourselves – how does this sacred writing of Paul’s apply to me and my life? How will the Word of God written by Paul help me focus on my treasure of faith and my response to my own daily trials and struggles? How can I come to know God better?

• Dates: 1-2 July • Theme: The Letters of Paul … his world, background and key ideas! • Presenter: Chris Monaghan CP BTheol, LSS, PhD (Yarra Theological Union, Melbourne) • Venue: Australian Catholic University, Banyo (use Approach Rd entrance) • Cost: Standard $150, Family $100/person,

INSPIRATION FOR THE ROAD AHEAD ... How do we create an authentic culture of faith formation? This is the question posed by Leif Kehrwald on the website: . The website brings www.vibrantfaith.orgtogether a number of experts, from a range of Christian denominations, to assist any Christian community to be a centre of ‘vibrant faith’. Below is his response to the question:

… If you want to move beyond education to formation that leads to transformation then you’ll need to move beyond faith formation as a set of programs to create and nurture a whole culture — an ecosystem – of faith formation. Jesus presented faith as a whole way of life. Education is just one piece in the complex puzzle of the lifelong journey of faith formation. Head knowledge has to be integrated with heart relationships and with hands on experiences. Noted Catholic theologian Thomas Groome talks about the comprehensive demands of discipleship in his book Will There Be Faith: A New Vision for Educating and Growing Disciples: • Christian faith as a way of the head (inform)

demands a discipleship of faith seeking understanding with personal conviction, sustained by study, reflecting, discerning, and deciding, all toward spiritual wisdom for life.

• Christian faith as a way of the heart (form) demands a discipleship of right relationships and right desires, community building, hospitality and inclusion, trust in God’s love, and prayer and worship.

• Christian faith as a way of the hands (transform) demands a discipleship of love, justice, peacemaking, simplicity, integrity, healing, and repentance.

Developing a congregational culture of faith formation, an ecosystem, then, requires education to be sure. We must help people know, understand, embrace the core values and beliefs of Christianity. But the ecosystem also requires that we provide intentional Christian community where authentic faith relationships can flourish. The culture must also foster

and lead toward a lifelong journey in pursuit of holiness and fullness of life. These are not new ideas. In fact they are quite ancient. Down through the ages, the things that persons and communities tend to do when they are growing faith reflect this three-fold process of inform -> form -> transform. Specifically, faith-filled Christians … Care for one another. They develop caring relationships that build a community of faith, hope, and love. Remember and celebrate. They recall the key events of the life, death, resurrection of Jesus and early church members and celebrate those events through the year. Ritualize important moments. They recognize their experiences of God’s love through sacraments and milestones that mark significant moments of one’s faith journey. Read Scripture. They encounter the living God in the living Word of God. They connect their stories with the stories of the Bible. Learn the tradition. They learn about what it means to be Christian, and what it means to engage that particular way of life. Pray. They seek and explore the myriad ways to connect with the real, but unseen God. They deepen their spirituality as individuals, as families, as faith communities. Serve. They engage in works of mercy and works of justice for the sake of others, particularly on behalf of those without a voice in society. Worship. They gather regularly with the community of believers to praise God, to thank God, to encourage and replenish one another, and to go forth in mission. These are the eight indicators of an authentic faith formation ecosystem.
