Dear Trinity Community,

Thank you for the warm welcome you continue

to give me! It is really wonderful to be in your

midst and worshipping God together - finally!

Our first week was very full with my first Sunday

and the celebrations of the lives of Mary Jane

Borgioli and Fred Fletcher. You all made it easy

for me to do what needed to be done and I am

grateful.

I want to especially thank the altar guild,

particularly Elisabeth Campbell and Bobbie

Hunter, the choir and Bob Sabourin for all they

did to prepare the altar and music for so many

services in such a short time span. Also, Mickie

Leibrand and Elisabeth spent hours taking apart

floral bouquets, organizing them in smaller

arrangements and taking them to our home

parishioners. We are blessed to have such an

abundance of gifts and service to God here.

Oh my, the staff is wonderful. Michelle Bullis

does a marvelous job as business manager. She

knows so much about how and what goes on

here at Trinity and she is a great support for

your rector - me! Bob Sabourin, as mentioned

earlier, does a wonderful job planning music and

working with the choir. I had the opportunity to

sit in on a choir rehearsal and am so impressed

with them all.

Our sexton, Terry Oliver, works very hard to

keep this building clean and presentable. Now

that it's summer he will spend one of his days

each week mowing the lawn, which means that

those hours are taken away from inside.

So if you happen to notice a paper on the floor or

a little mess in the bathroom sink, etc. please

take it upon yourself to tend to the situation.

Obviously, if it is something of significance

please let Terry or Bruce Sherbeck know....Now

there's another person who is here often and

does a ton. Thank you, Bruce for all you do.

I could go on but there's not enough room in The

Chimes to do so! What a gift you all are. Thank

you for the wonderful meal and music we shared

last Wednesday. It was great fun to get to know

you all a little better. Thank you for the food.

Thank you, Trinity Band, for the music. Thank

you to all who attended for your presence. It was

great fun!

The vestry is full of energy and commitment to

serve God by serving this community of faith.

They are unified, work hard, seek wisdom in

their decision-making and they desire to learn.

And they are fun to be around! These are

excellent qualities for vestry members to have. I

invite your prayers of wisdom and discernment

for them and me as we embark on this journey

together. Your prayers of support will and do

make a difference, thank you.

One of our goals is to continue to be transparent

in what we do. Vestry meetings are open (unless

there is a confidential matter), please join us.

Vestry minutes will continue to be posted. If you

would like a copy please leave a note for Michelle

in the office and she will get one to you.

May 22nd was Trinity Sunday - our namesake!

I loved hearing the bell choir for the first time.

Thank you Tracey and company! The thing I'm

most looking forward to is the way our one God -

the three in one - will be made known to us in

the mystery of the Unity. One God, three parts. It

boggles the mind, really. Throughout all time

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy

Spirit have been in existence. We can find each

person of our one God in the Hebrew Scriptures

(Old Testament) as well as in the New

Testament.

How will God be made manifest in our midst this

and each Sunday? How will the Mystery that is

God be revealed? God in three persons, blessed

Trinity. Come, let us rejoice and be glad that God

is in our midst revealing God's glory more and

more.

In Christ's love,

Rev. Sue

THE SENIOR CHOIR

Her People, Her Building

Then and Now

The Processional Cross is a crucifix or cross

which is carried in Christian processions. It may

be plain or ornate. If it is a crucifix, the crucifer

(cross bearer) usually holds the cross so that the

corpus (figure/body) is turned in the direction in

which the procession is moving. This symbolizes

Christ is leading the procession.

Long before Christianity, standards were carried

to rally and lead warriors. Roman army

standards were symbols of honor, held in awe

and fiercely protected. These tall poles held

impressive insignia and symbols aloft. The

standards were carried by officers so the troops

could see them above the action. This helped the

soldiers to stay close to one another and such

cohesiveness enhanced the strength of the unit.

For Christians, St Augustine, the first archbishop

of Canterbury, is often credited with introducing

the concept of a processional cross in the 6th

century, using it like a military standard to lead

the procession in some of the church rituals.

Later, in 731, in his Ecclesiastical History of the

English People, the Venerable Bede describes St.

Augustine approaching King Ethelbert ‘carrying

a silver cross for a standard’. In England, during

the Middle Ages, a special processional cross was

used during Lent. It was of wood, painted red,

and had no figure (corpus) of Christ on it.

Today, when the crucifer carries the

processional cross, we are reminded of Christ

leading the procession and His sacrificial offering

of Himself. Whether the

processional cross is simple,

one with a corpus of Christ in

all His suffering, or one with

Him victoriously risen from

the dead, we are made

mindful of the central truths

of our faith – Christ crucified

and risen.

“Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim

Till all the world adore His sacred name.”

The Hymnal 1982; # 473, Refrain. Words: George William Kitchin (1827-1912) Music: Crucifer, Sydney Hugo Nicholson (1875-1947) Faithfully submitted by the Historical Guild.

to the Sunday School who planted beautiful

flowers in the Trinity garden.

A BIG THANK YOU FROM

THE GARDEN GUILD

The Garden Guild would like to thank all of the

Trinity family who so generously gave monies

and/or help on Pentecost to mulch and plant the

geraniums. At the last count, the amount raised

was a whopping $548.00, so thank you so much

for contributing to the Pentecost geraniums and

the “Posy “drive. As for the planting, I will admit

the day was not the warmest, but we had enough

brave souls to spread 85 bags of mulch and plant

50 geraniums and still be done by 2:00pm. If you

feel you missed out, we have decided that we

need an additional 25 bags of mulch to complete

the job, so you can still help. (We’ll let you know

the date!) We also could use help in the summer

months watering, but it should be easier this

year since the trees are established and we have

chosen more drought-tolerant annuals. Plus it’s

a great opportunity to just enjoy some time

watching the birds and squirrels and enjoying

the sun where you find you are “nearer to God in

the garden than anywhere else on earth”. Let the

office know if you can help with watering.

I hope you noticed the spring flowers and

especially the red bud trees, all gifts to Trinity.

They are so beautiful.

Again, many, many thanks and see you in the

gardens.

All Blessings,

Mickie

A BIG THANK YOU TO TRINITY

The family of Bob Reif wishes to extend our

deepest thanks to everyone who helped make his

funeral farewell so special, Rev. Ann for helping

Dad in his final days and for getting the family

through a difficult time and of course her

wonderful homily.

As we all know, music was a mainstay in Dad’s

life. So imagine our surprise when the choir

came up the aisle. It was moving to see the

wonderful Trinity Choir there for Dad on

Saturday. Thank you!

As always, Bob Sabourin made the organ come

alive as only he can do when he piped Dad out of

the church playing the Navy hymn.

Thanks to Robert Hayhurst for reading the

lessons, Kerry Brown and Elisabeth Campbell for

Altar Guild services, Jack Esseltine and Bob

Hartley for ushering the service.

Finally thank you to Trinity’s Handbell Choir

who played Dad’s favorite song “Here I am Lord”.

My family is so proud of this choir. It means that

Dad’s dream of a handbell choir will live on.

Thanks Tracey and the ringers for keeping the

dream alive.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WIDER CHURCH

Taken from the Episcopal News Service

Happening in Flint: ‘We are all connected’

By Katie Forsyth | May 11, 2016 |

This spring’s Happening youth event made a

statement with the incorporation of water from

around the world into their spiritual practice

over the weekend of April 30-May 1.

Flint, one of the biggest cities in the Episcopal

Diocese of Eastern Michigan, is in the midst of a

crisis. A couple years ago, under leadership of an

emergency manager, the water supply in Flint

was switched from a Detroit source to one out of

the Flint River. Mismanagement and improper

treatment led to dangerous amounts of lead

being leached from the pipes that carry the

water into the homes of Flint residents. It wasn’t

until just months ago that the state recognized

the issue and Flint broke into national headlines.

To continue to keep the story of Flint in the

hearts and minds of people throughout the

church and in our communities, the “Happeners”

asked other Happening communities around the

globe if they would send in small bottles of water

from their various natural sources.

Bottles came in from as close by as just up I-75

and as far away as Haiti and the Jordan River.

Margaret Williams, the rector of Happening #18,

washes feet during the foot washing service.

On the opening day of the weekend, the waters

were combined in a common bowl. The

participants poured each bottle into bowl saying,

“We are all your people, your creation. Let your

love pour over us.”

After the waters were combined, the spiritual

directors for the weekend, the Rev. Shirley Seely

of Eastern Michigan and the Rev. Eric Williams of

Michigan, blessed it as the holy water for the

weekend, using it throughout various activities

and liturgical practices.

Margaret Williams, the rector of Happening #18,

washes feet during the foot washing service.

“My favorite thing we used it for,” explained the

Happening rector, Margaret Williams, “was on

Saturday night as we moved through the part of

Happening that imitates a miniature Holy Week.

During the Maundy Thursday-like foot washing

service, we would dip our hands in the water and

sprinkled it over everyone’s feet to symbolize

our connection to the other Happening

communities as everyone was praying for us and

for the people of Flint throughout this process.”

The Flint Water Crisis continues today with

residents still yet unable to drink the water from

their taps. Families exist on bottled water and

are often dependent on external distribution

sources. The vitamin-rich foods that aid in the

removal of lead from the bloodstream are

difficult to come by in many of Flint’s poorest

neighborhoods. This generation of infants and

children will be dealing with the effects of lead

poisoning for their lifetime.

The Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Michigan, in

partnership with Episcopal Relief and

Development and the local parishes and

organizations in Flint, have been providing water

and healthy foods since October 2015.

Happening is a youth event for high-school-aged

young people led by their peers. It occurs twice a

year and is a shared ministry of the Dioceses of

Michigan and Eastern Michigan. For more

information about Happening, contact Facilitator

of Youth and Young Adult Networks McKenzie

Bade at [email protected].

— Katie Forsyth is the director of

communications and public engagement in the

Diocese of Eastern Michigan.
