By Brenna Dugel

On a hot May morning in Paradise Valley, Arizona, the

sixty-four seniors of Phoenix

Country Day School’s graduating

class of 2016 gathered for a fi nal class

photo. They sported t-shirts of every

hue of the rainbow, representing

universities such as USD, ASU,

Stanford, Vanderbilt, Northwestern,

Harvard, and Columbia. But as they

lined up by height and proudly smiled

for the camera, they were reminded

of what it was like to navigate

the college admissions process.

This experience can certainly be a daunting one for any

student, with phrases like “SAT scores” and “acceptance rates” intimidating even the most confi dent of applicants. However, these students never had to face it alone. “I am grateful for PCDS college counseling’s small class size because it allowed me to have a more personal interaction with the counselors who guided me and the classmates who

were facing similar challenges,”

says senior Tiana Siragusa, who

will be attending the Barrett Honor

College at ASU. By working with

groups no larger than ten to fi fteen

students, college counselors Jessica

Raab, Meg Hathaway, and Barbara

Bzdack helped students organize,

prioritize, and eventually complete

the seemingly innumerable tasks

that make up the college application

process. “PCDS college counseling

assisted me by really getting to know

me and what I want for my future and

in my life,” commented senior Elle

Miraglia, who will be attending UCLA.

“Their guidance eventually led me

to the school I will be attending for

the next four years, and I couldn’t be

happier!” So as they stared at the bright

fl ashes of the camera, the PCDS

Class of 2016 not only felt grateful

for the guidance and support that

they had received throughout the

entire application process, but also

ready for whatever the future has

to hold at their college destinations.

Perhaps most importantly, however,

is the sense of community that

PCDS creates and imparts onto their

graduates. “Not only did the college

counselors support me and help me

make tough decisions, but they also

created a sense of unity by reminding

us all that we are in this process

together,” says senior Tara Dugel, who

will be attending Columbia University

in the fall. “They made us feel like a

unifi ed community: each one of us

with our own passions, talents, and

skillsets, but all sharing the common

goal of fi nding an ideal fi t for the next

four years.”

Q. You have a big interest in dinosaurs which one is your favorite? Why? A. My favorite dinosaur is the T-rex because it is a carnivore and it has the strength of two great white sharks bites.

Q. What is your favorite thing about attending CCS? A. My favorite thing about CCS is recess and religion with Mrs Ohney.

Gavin is in the second grade at Christ Church School.

Payten is in swimming and soccer and loves animals, music and

creating di erent things with her mini Legos. Peyton is very social and loves to help others always. She is positive and tries hard at everything she does.

Ever since I was little I have enjoyed swimming. It not only is a great sport to do,

but swimming helps me to stay cool during the summer. Most of my time is spent training for swimming, but I did recently get to volunteer at the Arena Pro Series meet held in Mesa. While volunteering I got to meet and talk to Michael Phelps. That is an experience I will never forget. There were a lot of

Olympic swimmers at the meet and it was exciting to see these swim stars in person. We all

will be cheering hard for them this summer.

My Interests outside of swimming include listening to music, hanging out with friends, and keeping updated on social media.

While I enjoy swimming I know that my school work is my fi rst priority. I want to earn a college scholarship and work hard to make sure that I complete all my homework and do my best to get good grades.

I’m very motivated and take swimming seriously, but I also know how important it is to have fun while doing it.

The New Way Academy Student Government organized and hosted the First Annual “Mr. New Way” Pageant on Friday, April 1st, 2016. The men of New Way’s senior

class, including Jared Johnson, Ken Swart, Mitchell McKenzie, Joseph Gallagher, Austin Forney, Ben Berk, and Jacob Taylor, competed in a beauty pageant style competition, vying for the ultimate title of “Mr. New Way”. The students were scored in several categories, including performing a special talent, formal wear and interview question, school spirit wear, legacy aspirations, and an opening dance number. The acts were scored by panel made up of New Way Upper School teachers, as well as peer votes.

The night was a smashing success! Students, parents, and sta were entertained by the wide variety of talents, including cooking demonstrations, musical acts, dance solos, rapping and stand up comedy. The hosts of the evening, sophomores Sean Raimbeault and Britney Waxman, kept the audience in stitches with their witty banter in between the acts. The crowd went wild when the contestants surprised the audience with a special choreographed group dance to a medley of songs. At the end of the evening, Austin Forney was peer-voted “Mr. Congeniality”, Jacob Taylor took home the award for “Mr. Talent”, and Jared Johnson was crowned as the fi rst ever “Mr. New Way”.

The evening was not just about the entertainment. Prior to the event, New Way Student Government hosted a cereal and toy drive to benefi t the Happily Ever After League, a unique program which supports mothers through cancer recovery. The event proceeds were also donated to this incredible organization.

New Way is proud of the members of Student Government for the e ort, time, and dedication they put into planning this new New Way tradition. The school community cannot wait for next year’s event!

Q. Your are involved in Girl Scouts and gymnastics at Arizona Sunrays tell us about that?A. I am a Brownie in troop 4496. A lot of the girls in my troop are in class with me at Simis. I think my troop is really awesome and I can’t wait for next year! Right now, I take gymnastics at Simis after school. The teachers come to my school and they teach us gymnastics in the cafeteria. They bring a bunch of equipment like balance beams, the bar, and the cheese mat. Q. What is your favorite part of Girl Scouts?A. If I had to pick one thing that I really liked, I would pick

the hiking trip that we did at North Mountain. We learned a lot of outdoor safety tips. It was super cool because we all made it to the top of the trail as a troop. Q. Tell us about your new chickens. A. I have four chickens. Two of them are big and the other two are still little chicks. The big chickens names are Penny and Flu y. The little chicks names are Ivy and Franky. Penny and Flu y live in a coop in our backyard and they like to forage for bugs in our garden. Ivy and Franky are still in the brooder because they don’t have all of their feathers yet. Once they get bigger and they have all of their feathers, they will get to live outside in the coop with Penny and Flu y.

SCOTTSDALEWhere Good Kids Can Be Famous Too!

Congratulations to the Rancho Solano Class

of 2016 on College Signing Day! With the national date to confi rm attendance at a student’s school of choice was May 2, many RS

seniors have already selected their college for next year. College admissions results for Rancho Solano students include Boston College, Cal Poly, Drexel, Loyola Marymount, Penn State, Texas A&M, University of California at Berkeley, University of Kansas, University of Massachusetts, University of Miami, University of San Diego, University of Southern California, Virginia Commonwealth University, Washington University in St. Louis, and many more. Rancho Solano applauds the Class of 2016 on their many accomplishments and are proud to share with them this national day of signing!

Sophia Koss is a Rancho Solano sixth grade student, and has a passion for reading and

an extraordinary commitment to helping others in her community. For her National Junior Honor Society community service project, the energetic Sophia organized a book collection with the goal of giving them away to less-privileged school-aged children so they would have books to read at home over the summer. Sophia

asked the Phoenix Indian Center to partner with her and help with book distribution. The

result? More than 1700 books collected!

Q. What has been your favorite part of putting together this drive? Does it make you want to do other projects?A. The Phoenix Indian Center already started giving out some books. They took a picture for me of some kids sitting on a couch and reading their new books. The book drive took a lot of time to organize, but when I saw the end result of kids actually reading, I was very happy. I am not sure what I am going to do for my next project, by I hope this summer to go to one of the Indian Reservations and meet some of the kids, and help their school get ready for the fall.

Q. What did you guys do to get ready for your trip to Costa Rica?A. Jordan: In preparation for our trip to Costa Rica, we learned a lot of new Spanish vocabulary and about the Costa Rican culture.

Q. What was it like when you arrived in Costa Rica?A. Abigail: When we arrived there it was really humid. We got to go into the rain forest and saw new wildlife and vegetation that we can’t fi nd in Arizona.

Q. What school did you visit and help out at?A. Abigail: We went to a school called the C.L.C. which

is the Creative Learning Center. They own about 106 acres of rainforest that have reforested. They learn English and Spanish and told us all about Costa Rican life.

Q. What was one interesting thing about the rainforest?A. Jordan: We talked about amphibian decline. Most of the frogs in the world are disappearing especially along the Pacifi c coast of the Americas but scientists haven’t fi gured out why. Some think its climate change or a fungus that is growing on them.

Q. What are some of your most memorable moments about the trip?A. Jordan: I loved our two hour rafting trip. We went on, rope swinging, swimming in the river, and the waterfall in the rain forest we found. It was beautiful! When we stayed at San Gerardo Field Station, they would take hikes. One was to a waterfall that was about a 25 - 30 minute hike, which had many slips, It was stunning. It was the most beautiful thing ever except the water was 40 degrees and it was freezing.

It is di° cult to pinpoint a particular thing that I love to shoot because landscape, cityscape, and portrait photography are all interesting in di erent ways. However, I can say that anytime that I am able to shoot a photograph from a unique perspective or tell a

story through an image, I am fi lled with happiness.

Q. What are your plans for the future?A. As I graduate from high school, I intend to pursue a career in fi nance or perhaps global business. I will be studying at New York University and through my pursuance of education at a collegiate level, I will be able to build upon the academic foundation that I have built at Horizon Honors. I hope that I am able to continue my photography pursuit on the side as I embark on a career in business, but more importantly, I hope that I will be able to create social impact to make the world a better place.

Schuyler (Skye) Courtemanche, 17, is an 11th grade student who loves all things art. What

you wouldn’t know after viewing some of her exquisite pieces is that Skye is nearly blind.

“I would say I am unique because of my eyesight,” said Skye. “My vision is extremely bad and people are always asking me what it is like to not be able to see like others. But from my point

of view what I see I think everyone else sees. When I look at a tree I don’t see a tree, what I see is one singular shape forming into another to make a tree.”

While she is an excelling student at Primavera Online High School, that wasn’t always the case. At her old school, Skye experienced di° culties that made high school hard for her.

“I was having a hard time with the public school social environment. I went to school to learn, not to be harassed. I went to my counselor and she told me about Primavera.”

Violin has always been my instrument of choice. I always loved the sound of the violin.

Q. What is the best thing about attending James Madison?A. James Madison is a great place to be. My favorite part would probably be the community we have, but I also enjoy my classes and teachers.

Where Good Kids Can Be Famous Too! WEST VALLEY

Q. What do you enjoy most about West-MEC’s Auto program?A. I enjoy the hands-on learning experience of my West-MEC Auto Technology Program. I have learned things that I never knew I had the physical capability to do. For example, I have learned how to work on air conditioning systems, engine rebuilding and electrical systems.

Q. What is in store for the future?A. I want to join the Army to

become a diesel mechanic.

Q. What has been your favorite thing to learn at West-MEC?A. That’s hard just to pick one because my whole experience has been awesome! My favorite thing was taking out an engine and working on it.

Q. What things do you enjoy doing outside of school?A. Bike riding and hiking.

Q. Do you have anything special planned for this summer?A. I am going on vacation with my family to go white river rafting in Colorado.

Nathan Schnierle is a senior at West-MEC.

Will is currently in eighth grade at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral

School. He recently played the lead character, Tevye, in the school production of Fiddler on the Roof! His amazing performance gave the families, students, and sta of SSJ a glimpse into his future career in the arts! Q. Have you always enjoyed acting?

A. Yes. I really enjoy the process of it. But, I still get really nervous going up there! Q. Have you had other roles in any plays?A. I have been in one other school play, which was Annie. I was the only 5th grader and was with a bunch of 8th graders! Q. Do you think you will continue acting in High School?A. For sure! I want to also look outside of school, too. I want to open myself up to other people and environments. Q. What else do you see yourself doing?A. I want to do small, but impacting things – like maybe doing a documentary or Arizona Broadway Theater.

Aiden has a very infectious smile and makes everyone one want to be around

him. He is a wonderful caring little boy with a wonderful outlook on life. He always asks if he can give money to homeless people and says when he grows up he wants to go around the world and help poor people.

Q. You have been Eagle of the Month three times, what is Eagle of the Month?

How did you win this honor? What responsibilities do this come with?A. Being eagle of the month means that I was being the best person that I could be following all the rules being thoughtful, helpful, and going above and beyond. That’s what earns the eagle of the month. The responsibility that goes along with it is to be an example for other students to follow.

Q. You play soccer what is your favorite thing about playing? Where do you play? What position do you play?A. I play the goalie position when playing soccer. I like being part of the team and playing with other kids. All of my soccer games are played at Sundance Park in Buckeye.

Sonya recently started her own charity called GrandPaws Pantry with the purpose of providing pet supplies to pets in needs, encouraging rescue pet adoption and

educating others regarding responsible pet ownership.

Q. You have started a charity called GrandPaws Pantry. Tell us about that.A. GrandPaws Pantry is a non-profi t charitable organization that I started that is dedicated to helping rescued dogs and cats in need. My goal is to encourage rescue pet adoption, educate people about responsible pet ownership and provide pet supplies to rescue organizations.

Q. What made you start this charity?A. There are almost 90,000 dogs and cats, every year, that come into the Maricopa County Animal Care & Control and Arizona Humane Society shelters and maybe half of them leave these shelters alive and get adopted. That breaks my heart and I knew I wanted to do something about it.

Q. How long has it taken you to get your charity to success?A. My charity is in the fi rst year so there is still a lot to do. I started last November and it has taken some time to develop the name, a logo, select a board of directors and get 501-c3 non-profi t status. GrandPaws Pantry now has a Facebook page with weekly information and updates and I used my birthday party as the fi rst fundraiser to collect donations to give to Halo Animal Rescue.

Sonya is a fourth grader at Bayer Private School.

Q. You recently started to play the piano tell us about that? A. I love it. I get to read the music notes and the words and sing the song. It’s interesting to read the notes while singing.

Q. What is your favorite song to play? A. I like to play My Red Drum and Chocolate Cake. I’m used to

them and those songs sound good to me.

Q. What made you want to start learning the piano? A. My Mom and Dad made me take classes. Now I love it.

Q. You love to design things. What do you like to design? A. I like to draw and color. And I watch Project Runway with my Mom and this makes me want to draw pretty clothes.
