TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents, At the beginning of the staff meeting on Monday morning, our
prayer was focused on “Those who love God must love their
brothers and sisters also” (1st John 4.21) Given the Orlando
massacre on the weekend, it was a fruitful meditation. It doesn’t
matter who you are, the events in Orlando begets the question,
“How can I and the ones I love be safe?” We would so like a
guarantee. The answer is, there is no guarantee, and expressing
outrage and anger in our demand for one doesn’t help. We know
that at any moment something horrifying can happen and yet we
need to live in peace and serenity. For those of us in places like
these Eastern Suburbs, we live unobtrusive lives with ambitions and
plans that are peaceful enough, and yes, we would say when asked,
that we are essentially vulnerable. An Orlando gives a sharper edge
to our understanding of that vulnerability. There is something
diabolical in the deliberate crazy intent of the killer. Here is no
carelessness; no human error or ‘act of nature’ about which we
could find comfort in a flawed world philosophy.
St Peter, who knew his own weakness well, advised. “Discipline
yourselves; keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil
prowls around looking for someone to devour” (1st Peter 5.8). The
devil is not talked about much anymore, but Hatred is, and it roams
our planet. Chameleon like, it can appear to be rational while also
encouraging humans to irrational anger and outrage and self-
referential righteousness. It drifts around causing suffering in places
that surprise.
What God proposes in response to Hatred is that we all take it on
individually. Jesus was not spared this basic human challenge.
Christians accept as truth that Jesus died for our sins, His

- Girls leave class at 3pm but the School reserves the right to require the girls to stay until 3.20pm - Every girl is to be at school by 8.30am at least. - Teaching commences at 8.40am - Supervision of girls begins at 8.20am. resurrection overcoming the effects of Hatred, and because of this, humanity is safe for all eternity
in its relationship with God. This doctrine is not cosy comfort at times like last weekend. We are
frightened. We want to know that we are on the planet with people who are tolerant, and
disciplined by values which will not allow Hatred to flourish. The guarantee is possible when it has
its beginning in each one of us.
If you pick up any of Jesus’ parables and read, you are looking into a mirror and the question comes,
“so how am I going in regard to really living the values I believe will help others feel safe around
me?” You challenge yourself and to the best of your ability sincerely answer. Hatred can never
have a good look at itself. Hatred is a coward.
At Brigidine we are trying to train the girls in the kind of self-love that will free each to ask important
questions of herself. How is she irrigating and feeding the garden of her heart so that it blooms for
her benefit and the benefit of others? What poisonous, unforgiving thinking is taking hold which
will destroy rather than blossom and which must be worked against? What positive things can be
done to convert our hearts to the ways of goodness? If some of humanity can do this, then all can.
This is Hope for the guarantee and a “sign that the Kingdom of God has come into this world in the
form of something bright and wholesome, something sound and true. More than this we cannot do.
But even this is a noble mission set before us as men and women, and as Christians, a mission
against the darkness, to enkindle the faith that the Kingdom of God has come” (Karl Rahner)

Founder’s Day Founder’s Day will be held on Wednesday 29th of June 2016. The theme for the day is the “Healthy
Mind, Heart and Body” and students are encouraged to dress-up creatively, as something to represent our
overall wellbeing.
We will celebrate Mass together in the morning and following this, students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of healthy living activities – drumming, yoga and cooking, as well as visit the many mental health agencies attending our Inaugural Brigidine Fair. Each Year group will also be involved in an Anti-Bullying dramatic production as part of the day. There will be the opportunity for passive games along with a jumping castle to promote movement. Everything will be set up in the school grounds. This is a compulsory school day for all students. The day will conclude at approx. 2:30pm. Girls are required to be in FULL winter uniform for Mass (including Tights). They may change into their costumes after Mass. We would love parents to come along and assist with our BBQ. If you are able to offer us a few hours on the day, please indicate on the slip sent home or call the front office and let them know.
Parent Teacher Interviews Years 7 – 10 Parent/Teacher Interviews for Years 7-10 will be held on Thursday 30th June from 8:40 – 6:30pm and Friday 1st July from 8:40 – 1.00pm in Cullen Hall. These are pupil-free days.
To maximise parent access to interviews, an appointment schedule will operate over the two days. Parents can make appointments with teachers via our SENTRAL online booking system, see below for instructions. Bookings are now open and will close on Friday the 24th of June at 4pm. Reports will be available on the SENTRAL Parent Portal the week of the Parent/Teacher Interviews and you are requested to collect a hard copy of your daughter’s report when you arrive to discuss with teachers on the day.
Parent/Teacher interviews provide an opportunity for parents, students and teachers to discuss students’ progress, to celebrate good news and examine methods to improve learning outcomes. Hopefully, this will mean that students, as well as parents, will receive formal feedback on effort, application and achievement, as well as advice on how to improve their performance in all subjects.
Accessing the Parent Interviews Portal
Log into the Student & Parent Portal on SENTRAL.
Click on the Session name “Mid-Year - 2016 Parent Teacher Interviews”

If you do not wish to book an appointment for a particular subject, click on the “Interview not required” link, which will mark that timeslot for your daughter as not attending.
Once you have selected all time-slots, click the “confirm appointments” button to send through your interview requests.
When you have confirmed the appointments, you will then have saved an Interviews Summary for your reference. At the bottom of the page, you have options to Download as an iCal export file or print a hard copy.

LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT NEWS
YEAR 8 ITALIAN PASTA MAKING DAY On the 9th and the 10th of June, Year 8 Italian participated in an Italian pasta making lesson. It was a great experience that lasted for 1 hour and a half. At the end we were able to enjoy a delicious bowl of freshly made pasta!! Each class had their own session with Luca the chef and his 2 assistants.
During the hour and a half each student got to make the dough, flatten it (so you could see your hand through it) and cut it into strips. During the lesson a lot of Italian was spoken and it was a great learning experience as well as a lot of fun. I am sure the rest of Year 8 would agree.
On behalf of Year 8 I would like to say a big thank you to Luca and his assistants for coming and showing us how pasta is really made, as well as sharing their knowledge with us. They were all really nice and patient towards us. I would also like to thank Mrs Parsons and Mrs Christofides for organising it for us. We are very grateful. Mila Cepus and Aniesha Raffoul
SPORTS DEPARTMENT NEWS
Congratulations to Isabella Slattery and Bronti Westaway who represented the CGSSSA in Touch at
the Combined Catholic Colleges Championships in Dubbo. Both girls played brilliantly and showed
great sportsmanship. Isabella was selected in the U15 CCC Team which is an outstanding
achievement and we wish her all the best at the next level.
ST CATH’S NETBALL COMPETITION 2016
Brigidine competed in an inter-school netball competition held at St Catherine’s Waverley
throughout Term 2. We had nine teams compete in the 7-week competition this year, and the girls
participated with enthusiasm and determination. They had a great deal of fun on the netball court.
The girls displayed great teamwork and sportsmanship and represented the school beautifully.
This year, five teams made it through to the grand finals, which were held on Wednesday 15th June.
Three of the five teams came away with a victory this year, and two teams were runners up. There
were some close and very exciting games leaving spectators on the edge of their seats!
Congratulations to all the girls who made a commitment, and have played each Wednesday. A big
thank you to all the parents for their ongoing support, as the competition could not go forward
without you. Also thank you to Mrs Elder and the PE department for their ongoing support for the
competition.
Another great St Cath’s season.

CGSSSA SOCCER
The CCC tournament took place over two sunny days at Valentine Sports Park. Our CGSSSA team
consisted of many friendly talented girls who bonded quickly. An injury in the game prior to our first
game during Day 1 meant that our 2nd game was postponed to Day 2. We had to play four games in
one day, winning all but the last. This one was lost due to the heat and fatigue! We came 2nd in our
pool and 3rd overall. It was a great experience that I really enjoyed!

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT NEWS
UNSW FIRST Robotics
Last week, UNSW’s Robotics team brought their robot in to show us what they had been working on! In 6 weeks they had built a robot and were in the process of programming it to complete tasks for the competition. The team gave our STEM students tips and advice on robotics, as well as inspiring
and encouraging them with their stories!
Bunnings STEM Club BBQ
Despite having been rained out the previous weekend, we were able to secure a last minute spot at Bunnings, Mascot for the long weekend! And what a success it was!!
We sizzled around 850 sausages from 7am - 4pm to feed the hungry DIYers of the Eastern suburbs. We raised over $1,000 which will go towards purchasing equipment and entry costs for the Lego
League Robotics Competition at the end of the year.
Thank you to all the students, parents and science teachers for your support on the day, and especially to Mr Lockhart for helping man the BBQ from 7.30am - 2.30pm!
