Summer is here, which meansyour darling little ones are out ofschool and likely spending theirvacation at home. This can mean24/7 access to food and snacksand often times a more sedentarylifestyle. It seems long gone are thedays when we, as kids would spendthe summer months building fortsin the trees, riding bikes all day or

just running around outside withour friends only to take a shortbreak to eat a sandwich or grab adrink of juice. These days, kidsseem to spend their time watchingTV, playing X-box and feasting

on chips and other easy, unhealthysnacks.

It doesnt have to be this way. Itis at this early age when teachingyour kids to eat nutritious foodsand be active will set them upfor good health later in life. Buthow can a parent ensure thattheir child is active and healthy

throughout the summer months?By being active and healthy WITHthem. Children want to emulatetheir parents, so the best way toteach them the proper tools foradulthood is to be a role modelwhile they are still young.

Following these tips will help youto keep your kids properly fuelledand energized throughout the

summer months as well keepingthem happy and healthy until theschool year begins again.

    Increasing Activity Level

The simplest thing you can do istake your child for a walk. This canbe as easy as taking them with youwhen you take the family dog for

a walk or taking them for a walkto the nearest park. Once at thepark, let them go wild! It is muchbetter for them to be climbing themonkey bars outside than to havethem climbing the walls inside. Aminimum 30 minutes of running, jumping and climbing may beall your child needs to help themsettle down at night and get a

better sleep. If your child is older, then a family bike ride is a greatidea. Not only will it keep youall active but it allows you to seenew things that will form a greatdiscussion at the end of the day.

    Providing Sound Nutrition

When your kids are more activethey require more nutrients to

fuel them and keep their energylevels high. What you feed yourkids is more important than how

much you feed them. Foods highin unusable calories and processedsugars should be avoided at all costssince they will drain your child ofenergy and can lead to loweredimmunity and sickness. High

energy foods are nutrient denseand low in processed sugars. Theyshould contain a good proteinsource (lean meats, natural nutbutters), a carbohydrate source(think whole grains) and a naturalform of sugar (whole fruits). Threegood meals a day with a coupleof snacks in between should beenough to keep your child running

    all day.

    Keeping Hydrated

Spending more time outside meansbeing exposed to the elements andin the case of summer this meanshigher temperatures. Being activein the heat causes you to lose morewater and electrolytes throughsweating so keeping hydrated isvery important. It isnt necessaryto give your kids Gatorade or other

sports drinks that contain largeamounts of sugar and articialcolouring. Plain water or freshsqueezed juices are enough toreplenish during an average day

of outside play. However, if yourchild plays a sport such as soccerduring the hot summer months,

giving them Coconut Water ora homemade sports drink is abetter option to help replace lostelectrolytes and water.

    Keeping Cool

Keeping cool is just as important askeeping hydrated. Eating coolingfoods can help to reduce bodytemperature, making your child feelmore comfortable. When the bodybecomes overheated it causes reducedappetite, irritability, lack of sleepand general lethargy. Eating freshorganic fruits and vegetables, yogurt, sandwiches and cold pasta salads

will still provide necessary energywhile keeping your childs bodytemperature regulated and happy.

    Healthy Snacks

Healthy meals seem to be easier toprepare than healthy snacks, so besure to have things made up aheadof time for on-the-go gnoshing.

Have a bowl of cut up fruit in thefridge at all times with grapes, strawberries, blueberries andmelon pieces. Make homemadepopsicles with fresh squeezed juice no sugar added - or by placing ahalf banana on a stick and freezingit. Organic, naturally sweetened

yogurt cups or prepackagedbaggies of nuts, granola or healthy

cereals are also easy, ready to grabsnacks.

Make the most out of yoursummer by spending timetogether and making sure it isboth healthy and fun for you andyour little ones.

I had a most interesting experiencea few months back. Years agowhen I was rst learning all of thisinformation about diet and nutritionand its effect on health, I was so over-the-top with enthusiasm and zeal, Iwould literally approach shoppers inthe grocery storestrangersandberate them for the foods they were

buying and bringing home to theirfamilies. On more than one occasion Iwas unceremoniously ushered from thestore and discouraged from returning. Those days are long gone nowrarely,if ever, do I give unsolicited adviceonanything! But a few months ago I sawa group of teenagers in the grocerystore buying what I would refer toas, junk food. Ordinarily I would justreect on what a shame it was andmove on to the fruit and vegetablesection. But one of these kids caughtmy eye and I just couldnt walk bywithout saying something to him. Yousee, he was clearly an athletic personin really good shape. He was classicallygood looking, tall, blond hair, blue eyes, but obviously dealing with what wasundoubtedly the bane of his existence:his face was completely covered witha mass of pus-lled blemishes. It wasimpossible to look at him and not be

somewhat repulsed and you could tellby his demeanor and body languagethat he knew it all too well.

I singled him out and asked him ifI could please talk to him for just amoment. I got right to it; I told him

who I was and asked him if he wouldbe interested in learning somethingthat could possibly clear up his face.

He was a little taken aback by mydirectly addressing his problem buthe was totally open. He had neverheard of me nor was he familiar withFIT FOR LIFE, but he thoughthis Mom might have read the booksometime in the last centuryliterally.I shared with him the fact that theliving body is always generating a

certain amount of toxins which isnot a bad thing; it is simply how thebody works. It is only a problem ifthey are not eliminated. These toxinsare produced from two sources; rst, every day approximately 300-500billion cells die off, which are toxicand must be eliminated from the

body. The second source is from theresidue of the approximately 70 tons offood we will each eat in our lifetime.

Thats right, 70 tons! These toxins

must be eliminated because if moreis generated than is eliminated, thatspells trouble in the form of pain, ill-health, and ultimately disease.

I further explained to him that oneof the means by which the body ridsthe system of toxins when they are inexcess of what the normal channels can

handle is to expel more of them outdirectly through the skin than usual.

This is what was going on with thisyoung man. Bear in mind that notonly is the skin the largest organ ofthe body but it is also an eliminativeorgan along with the bowels, bladder, and lungs. As part of the normal, daily process of removing toxins fromthe body, the skins millions of poresare regularly utilized. All mannerof skin conditions in addition topimples, including hives, eczema, atype of Lupus, inammation, psoriasis

Rosacea, impetigo, staph, shingles, KP(also known as chicken skin), opensores, and rashes, and all the itching, aking, and irritation that accompanythese conditions are far more oftenthan not the result of an overloadof toxins that are being pushed outthrough the skin. This can happenanywhere on the body; hands, arms, legs, back, face, etc.

Tetris to Treat Lazy Eye Disorder?

New research led by Dr. RobertHess from McGill University andthe Research Institute of the Mc-Gill University Health Centre hasdiscovered that the video game

Tetris can be used as an approach to

treat adult amblyopia, also known aslazy eye. The research publishedin Current Biology explains that bydistributing information betweenthe two eyes, the video game trainsboth eyes to work together insteadof the previous patching treatmentfor the condition.

The researchers tested a sample of 18adults with amblyopia. Nine par-ticipants played the game monocu-

larly with the weaker eye, while thestronger eye was patched. The othernine played the game dichoptically,

where each eye was allowed to viewa separate part of the game. Aftertwo weeks of playing the game, thedichoptic group showed dramatic im-provement in the weaker eye and in3-D depth perception. The monocu-lar group had showed only a moder-ate improvement. This treatment willbe tested in children later this year ina clinical trial across North America.Source: Current Biology, April 2013

    Improving Seniors'Cognitive Functions

Mild cognitive impairment affects10%-25% of people over age 70. Theannual rate of decline to dementiais about 10%. Cognitive training ex-ercises, or mental exercise, may help

prevent cognitive decline in healthyolder adults, while evidence for thebenets of pharmacologic substancesand exercise is weak.

Researchers reviewed 32 randomizedcontrolled trials to provide the latestevidence for physicians and their pa-tients to help manage cognitive decline.

There is no strong evidence for phar-macologic treatments such as ginkgo, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA),

vitamins, and other substances. Moststudies on efcacy show no effect,

whereas estrogen therapy showedan increase in cognitive decline anddementia. Evidence for the benetsof physical exercise is also weak.

Mental exercise, however, showedbenets in the three clinical trialsincluded in the review. This involved

computerized training programs orintensive one-on-one personal cogni-tive training in memory, reasoning orspeed of processing. In one trial, par-ticipants had signicantly improvedmemory during 5-year follow-upperiods. Another study showed animprovement in auditory memoryand attention in a group of seniorswho participated in a computerizedcognitive training program.

"This review provides some evidenceto help clinicians and their patientsaddress what strategies might preventcognitive decline," Dr. Raza Naqvi,Division of Geriatric Medicine,University of Toronto, was quoted assaying. "Future studies should addressthe impact of cognitive training onthe prevention of cognitive decline, and we encourage researchers toconsider easily accessible tools such

as crossword puzzles and sudoku thathave not been rigorously studied. Thestudies in this review that assessedcognitive exercises used exercises that

were both labor and resource-inten-sive, and thus may not be applicableto most patients."Source: Canadian Medical Association

    Alternative Therapies for

High Blood PressureA scientic statement from theAmerican Heart Association saysalternative approaches to loweringblood pressure, such as isometrichand grip exercises and resistanceor strength training, are effective atreducing high blood pressure. Thealternative therapies also have fewhealth risks and side effects.

A panel of experts reached thisconclusion using data from 1,000studies on three types of alternativetherapies: behavioral therapies, non-invasive procedures and devices, andthree types of exercise. Some of thedata examined included the effectsof yoga, acupuncture, and meditationon blood pressure.

While all three types of alternativetherapies reduced blood pressure,

certain ones were more effectivethan others. Isometric hand gripexercises were able to lower sys-tolic and diastolic blood pressureby 10% after four weeks of doingthe exercises, but walking programsand device-guided slow breathingresulted in smaller drops in bloodpressure.Source: Hypertension, April 2013

A New Way toReduce Calorie Intake

A recent study at Texas ChristianUniversity has discovered that amenu displaying the minutes ofexercise (brisk walking) needed toburn food calories led to fewer calo-ries ordered and consumed. Many

restaurants display calorie informa-tion on their menus to encourageconsumers to make healthier foodchoices, but most studies showit does not lead to fewer caloriesordered or consumed. This is therst study to look at the effects ofdisplaying minutes of brisk walking

needed to burn food calories on thecalories ordered and consumed, Dr.Meena Shah, the senior researcher,

    was quoted as saying.

The study involved 300 men andwomen ages 18 to 30. They ran-domly assigned a menu withoutcalorie labels, a menu with calorielabels, or a menu with labels for theminutes of brisk walking needed toburn the food calories. The study

was eye-opening for many of thesubjects.Source: Federation of American Societ-ies for Experimental Biology, April

UVA Rays Cause Skin to AgeFaster

New research from the BostonUniversity School of Medicinefound that longwave ultravioletlight (UVA) induces a protein calledprogerin which leads to prematureskin aging. Progerin plays a role innormal and abnormal aging, butthis is the rst time an increase inprogerin expression has been linkedto UVA rays.

For the study, researchers exposedskin cell cultures to UVA and UVBrays. Although both kinds of ultra-

violet lights induced progerin, UVArays had a particularly strong effect. So researchers concluded exposureto UVA rays through something likea tanning bed could contribute toaccelerated skin aging.Source: Journal of Investigative Der-matology, April 2013

I let him know that it has been myexperience over the last 40 plus yearsthat when people closely follow theprinciples of eating delineated in mybooks, skin conditions such as theseclear up. Not to make light in any

way of such conditions of the skin, butthey will clear up when proper stepsare taken to allow and support thebodys ongoing effort to efciently andeffectively remove toxins.

The important thing is to know thatthe body and all of its activities unfold

with a precision and intelligence thatis incomprehensible to us; is wellaware of the situation, and will addressit given the opportunity.

After pointing out to him that Iknew, much to his obvious surprise, that he loved eating starchy foodslike bread, pasta, pizza, cookies,

    cakes, and other pastries, cereals,

chips, crackers, in fact anything madefrom grains of any kind. I explainedto him that everything he eats hasto ultimately be liqueed so thenutrients that are in the food canbe successfully passed through theintestinal wall into the bloodstreamfor delivery to the cells. The problemis that starch IS NOT WATERSOLUBLE! It cant be dissolvedand liqueed so it remains a solidand therefore cannot be utilized bythe body. The undissolved starchmolecules remain in the body andgum up the works as it were, causing, amongst other things, zits! I pointedout that certain bacteria thrive moreon starchy matter than on almost any

other matter. As a result, they helpus out by breaking down built-upstarch molecules into pus, whichis then pushed out through theskinpimples! And every time helooked in the mirror he was gettinga rsthand view of this phenomenonin action.

I suggested to him that if he wantedto get a handle on what was goingon with his face so he could talk to

    girls without feeling self conscious,

he needed to seriously consider eatingfewer starches (and sodas while he wasat it) and eat a little more fruit andsalad. I made it clear to him that if hewere to stop eating starches altogether,at least until his skin returned tonormal, that he would enjoy what hewas only dreaming about when he wentto sleep at night. He could certainlyre-introduce starches back into his dietonce his skin cleared up, but for now,it would be wise to stop it all and givehis body a chance to make things rightfor him. That was ithe thanked me,said he would think about what I toldhim, and we parted company. That wasabout 5 months ago.

A few weeks ago, in the parking lotof the very grocery store where thisencounter took place, I heard someonebehind me calling out, Hey, Mr.Diamond! I almost didnt recognizehimhis face had been transformed! Not only did he take to heart whatI had shared with him, but on theoutside chance I actually knew whatI was talking about, and he might beable to normalize his complexion, hehad not had a single bite of anything

starchy, nor had he consumed a single

Over the years I have had a signicantamount of experience with people

    Dear Pharmacist,

After years of hiking without manyproblems, I began experiencing pain nearmy ankle and heel. My doctor diagnosedAchilles tendonitis and prescribedmedicine which did reduce pain and

swelling. Im still worried Ill not be ableto hike again. What natural remedieskeep this at bay? --J.S. Boulder, CO

Answer: Ouch, Ive had tendonitis my-self from over-typing and exercising soI hear ya. This condition is usually anoveruse injury and causes pain or swell-ing in the wrists, knee caps, elbows orAchilles tendons. Actually it can occurin any tendon and there are hundreds!Unfortunately, tendons dont have a

rich blood supply and that hinders ad-equate delivery of oxygen and nutrients.Simply put, tendons are slow to heal.

The most important thing you can doto improve tendonitis pain is to rest thearea, thats hard to do when it s your foot! But tendons dont recover if you keepoverusing them. The next consideration(and this one is also free) is to ice the areato reduce inammation but icing doesnt

help much after the rst few days. Sup-plements or medications do help. Mostof you will opt for medications like ibu-profen or naproxen (these are NSAIDsand are contraindicated in people withbleeding ulcers among other conditions). My personal favorite anti-inammatorysupplements include astaxanthin, saffron, and curcumin because they have othertremendous health benets. Here aresome more options that can help:

Boswellia: A strong anti-inammatorycompound that works as effectively asNSAIDs. Sometimes called IndianFrankincense this herb can be com-bined with any of the three supple-ments I mentioned above.

MSM-Methylsulfonylmethane:MSM supports healthy connectivetissues like tendons and ligaments. Its used for arthritis too. This one is amust for prevention.

White Willow (salix alba): This is alsoknow to increase fertility; willow barkmay ease aches and pains. Aspirin comesfrom white willow, and you can trust theherb to reduce pain and inammation, however it is a mild blood thinner.

Ginger: Great for inammation andpain, especially around the joints. Youcan buy fresh root at any grocery storeand grate into your meals, or maketea. Ginger increases blood circulation(be careful with other blood thinners).

Ruta (ruta graveolens): This homeo-pathic remedy is used for tendon pain, especially in the Achilles, feet, hips,

wrists, and areas near other joints.Boiron makes this in pellet form.

Arnica (arnica montana): Also ahomeopathic, arnica has been used forcenturies to treat general pain. It canbe taken orally or applied topically.

The topical cream Traumeel by Heelcontains arnica and several other heal-ing compounds targeted specicallyto reduce pain and inammation from

strains and sprains. Im never withoutTraumeel!

Tendonitis can sometimes be the resultof arthritis, gout, Reiter syndrome orAnkylosing spondylitis, Lyme diseaseor other conditions. Its harder to treat

or may recur frequently so see your doc-tor for a correct diagnosis and to ask ifthese supplements are right for you.

    Ingredients:

1 large yellow onion, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 cup nutritional yeast1 large red bell pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped 1 tablespoon tahini, optional3 tablespoons cashews, toasted, optional Salt to taste

No-Cheese Sauce Makes about 2 cups

This low-fat sauce makes great Mac and Cheese or Baked Ziti. Best of all, it only takes about5 minutes to put together. It may seem as though this recipe will not work in a blender, but witha little patience it does. If your onions are strong, blanch them in boiling water for a few min-utes, or saut them over medium heat for about 5 minutes before adding them to the blender.

    Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a blender in the order given and puree until smooth andcreamy, adding up to cup of water if necessary to achieve a smooth consistency.Variations Use an equal amount of roasted red bell peppers in place of the raw pepper. Combine the prepared sauce with a jar of store-bought salsa or a recipe of Fresh

Tomato Salsa, and use as a dip for vegetables. Add teaspoon of nutmeg with the salt.
