Patients Putting Their Lives at RiskLocal doctors and ambulance offi-

cers say patients are risking their lives by not using the ‘000’ service in life-threatening situations.

Dr David Christensen, of Canungra Valley Medical, said the general practice does not have the equipment or resources to adminis-ter emergency care for patients who should call an ambulance.

“We have had several patients recently who had life threatening conditions and waited for up to four days, before making an appoint-ment to see a doctor at our practice. In some cases they mentioned their chest pain as an afterthought at the end of the appointment,” he said.

“They have caused unnecessary delays in treatment and damage to affected organs, that is, heart and brain, a lot of which is irreversible.”

“While we provide emergency care for these patients, others with appointments are waiting and we are unable to treat them. We are just not set up to care for emergency cases.”

David said anyone with sudden onset of chest pain, severe abdomi-nal pain, severe headache, or loss of vision should call ‘000’ immediately.

Acting Officer in Charge at Canungra Ambulance Station, Sean Hayes, said the ambulance service is

for any life threatening condition.“Members of the public should

not hesitate to call ‘000’. If they are in doubt as to the severity of their condition they don’t need to worry as the telephone operator will assess them before dispatching an ambu-lance,” said Sean.

Practice Manager, Bronwyne Brown, said patients need to be proactive.

“This is not a critical care unit,” she

said, “We just don’t have the resourc-es to cope with these emergencies and patients are putting their lives at risk by presenting to a General Prac-titioner instead of getting emergency care from the Ambulance Service.”

Goat Track Set for August ReopeningThe Goat Track (Tamborine Mountain Road)

is set to reopen in August this year, which will be a welcome relief for Canungra residents and businesses alike.

The road was closed on 28th January this year when storms from ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswaldcaused approximately 100 metres of the full width of the road to subside.

Since then, traffic between Canungra and Mount Tamborine has had to use Henri Roberts Drive or Tamborine Road, adding an extra 30 minutes to the journey.

The effect of the road closure has caused financial hardship for some members of the community. One Canungra business estimated their takings have been reduced by up to a third and a family who regularly travels to Tamborine Mountain for school and work said the closure has added $70 per week to their fuel bill.

In mid-May 2013 the Department of Trans-port and Main Roads completed its investiga-tions, including geo-technical work, to assess the extent of the damage and develop a design for reconstructing the road.

With the design finalised and some vegeta-tion clearing completed, the reconstruction work began in early June. The works include constructing a rock filled toe wall to provide a solid foundation, before repairing and resealing the road.

Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause, who met with representatives from TMR and CMC

contractors on Monday 27th May, said the work is scheduled to be completed in August, however this will depend on weather conditions.

He said 7000 tonnes of earth will be removed and replaced with 20,000 tonnes of rock on a

sandstone base.During the reconstruction work the road will

remain closed to traffic. No vehicles, including motorcycles, are permitted past the road closed signs to the slip.

James Power, Project Engineer, CMC, the constructing contractor; Paul Noonan, South Coast Region Director, TMR; Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause; and David Selth, Manager, Delivery and Operations,

South Coast Region, TMR.

“We will continue to add to our library to keep up to date with the latest new releases and requests from customers for movies,” said David, “We are also offering free membership and one free DVD rental with each new membership.”

Businesses Support Pony ClubLocal businesses have rallied behind the

Canungra Hack and Pony Club to provide corporate sponsorship for 2013, allowing the club to purchase new equipment and hold two events for 2013.

President Meegan Ryan said she is delighted with the support which will enable the Club to host a gymkhana on 18th August and showjumping event on 22nd September.

Events Organiser Katrina Morrow said the number of riders in the gymkhana has been growing by 20 per cent each year.

“We have decided to introduce the

showjumping event this year because the gymkhana has been so popular,” she said.

“Aussie Lifestyle Properties, Informed Conveyancing and Canungra FoodWorks have been supporters of the Club for the last five years, and this year they are joined by Cafe Metz, Canungra Hotel, Hinter-land Driveway & Landscaping Solutions, as well as Jenny’s Western Products and Saddlery of Beaudesert and Cetnaj of Burleigh Heads,” she said.

“Our sponsors’ support is greatly appre-ciated by the club. We are looking forward to a fantastic conslusion to the year.”

First Markets a Raging SuccessThe first Canungra Valley Markets

were a raging success, said organisers Sue Kenna and Judy Morrison.

“We had 23 stall holders with a vast variety of goodies on offer,” said Judy.

“We had jewellery, cheeses, organic produce and ice cream, scrapbooking, card makers, a masseuse, candles, spiritual, Greenlee farm with their beautiful maca-damia nuts, and so much more,” said Sue.

Held at the Canungra School of Arts Hall on Sunday 26th May, the markets came about after Sue and Judy saw the success of the Orchid Shows held in the Hall and thought the venue would be an excellent all-weather option for markets.

Judy and Sue wished to thank the Canungra Swimming Club for keeping the crowd fed and watered with their barbecue and cold drinks and for the banner that they donated to advertise the markets.

“We would also like to thank the Canungra Scouts for putting on the morning tea in the hall, Margaret Day for rounding up the local scouts on such short notice, The Canungra Times for helping with advertising through facebook and the paper and Barry Day, for very patiently taking the barrage of calls from us and helping us in whatever way he could,” said Sue.

Judy said Naomi Sayer helped share the load in every way possible, both in

organising and meeting and greeting every one coming through the door.

“Every person who came had a wonder-ful morning. All the stallholders from this market said they will be returning in June and we also have six new confirmed stalls, but more are welcome,” she said.

While there was plenty of craft and home made goods on offer, Judy and Sue said they would like to see more local produce such as fruit and vegetables and home made cakes. With stalls only $10 each, it is a very affordable market for stallholders.

Canungra Valley Markets will be held on the last Sunday of each month, with the next market set down for Sunday 30th June 2013 from 8am. For all enquiries please phone Sue or Judy on 5543 4345 or mobile 0432 050 261.

Community Bank Ready for Next Step

A Steering Committee is ready to take the next steps towards a Canungra Community Bank.

The Community Bank model was outlined at a meeting on Monday 27th May attended by representa-tives of the community, business owners and repre-sentatives of Bendigo Bank, who have developed the branches as partnerships with small communities around Australia over the last 15 years.

Canungra Chamber of Commerce Secretary, Keer Moriarty, said more people are needed to join the Steer-ing Committee to see the branch through the set up phase. Once opened, the branch will be run by a local Board of Directors with Bendigo Bank holding the banking licence and attending to the banking aspects of the business.

Branch profits are distributed between Bendigo Bank, local shareholders and community groups via grants and sponsorships.

For more information, contact Keer on 5543 5532 or call in to The Canungra Times office.

Keeping Blue Care on the RoadOver the last eight years, Wayne Reiser has worked

hard to keep the Blue Care community nurses on the road raising an estimated $35,000 in conjunction with the Canungra Hotel. He added another $5,000 to this total this year.

Blue Care Beaudesert’s Service Manager, Angela Kearney said they are very grateful to Wayne and to the Canungra Hotel management and staff.

“These funds go towards the running expenses of our community nurses’ vehicles which operate throughout the Scenic Rim and as far as the NSW border. The money Wayne raises for us is instrumental in keeping these vehi-cles on the road,” she said.

Something for EveryoneThere was something for everyone at the Canungra

Uniting Church fete held on Saturday 18th May on the Church grounds in Appel Street, Canungra.

For young children there was facepainting, cakes and the toy stall. The adults enjoyed delicious morning teas and lunches while listening to music provided by local musician Kevin Chidley and singer Sue McKeay.

Canungra’s History…ruBy opperMan

By Chloe PickardRuby Opperman was a little known

pioneer of our community, working in a man’s job at a time when women were not treated as their equals.

Charles Chauval and his crew were shooting the film Heritage on the moun-tain road that Romeo Lahey built when they saw Ruby driving her five-ton lorry down towards them. Three of her chil-dren had accompanied her on this trip and were sitting alongside her. She stopped and chatted to a reporter with the crew while the crew rearranged themselves so she could go past them on the narrow pass.

In the article Story of Ruby The Timber Hauler published in The Week on Wednes-day June 1934, the writer describes her as driving down the mountain with her lorry

loaded with logs almost every day. In the month the crew spoke with her, she had taken 58 loads of timber to the mill. She would also unload the logs when she got there. She was casual about the dangers of her job, saying it was safe as long as’ you know what you are doing’. She had some near misses, once breaking her arm while cranking the engine, which made her have to wear a wrist band. This in itself caused a near disaster when the band became stuck in the wheel as she was heading towards the edge. She had no way of slowing down but she ‘got out of it somehow’ as she laconically finished the story.

If you have more information on Ruby, please contact the Canungra Information Centre.

In Brief...local planning study endorsed

Council endorsed Canungra’s Local Planning Study at its meeting on 30th April 2013.

The study document, created in consultation with the local community, outlines a 20-year vision and strategic plan for managing growth in Canungra and its surrounds.

The study includes a land use plan which aims to provide a balanced approach to the area’s expected growth from 700 to 3000 people over the next twenty years.

Deputy Mayor Virginia West said she believed the final document reflected the broader community’s aspirations for Canungra.

“Residents expressed their desire to retain Canungra’s vibrant village atmosphere and preserve its rural lifestyle and character, while providing increased opportunities for employment and small business,” Cr West said.

The Canungra Local Planning Study document can be viewed online at www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au.

unWanted tvs and pcs can noW Be recycledCouncil has expanded its range of recycling initiatives

to include Ewaste disposal at four waste sites in the Scenic Rim, including the Canungra waste transfer station.

The glass, metals and plastics in older model televisions and computers can all be recycled in disposal cages at Canungra, Beaudesert, Tamborine Mountain and Boonah. The service is free for residents and small businesses.

licensees invited to Feed inFo into revieWCouncil wants to hear from food license holders in the

Scenic Rim as part of a review of the current food license system. The organisation is considering the adoption of a risk-based approach to food licensing.

“This approach will see food retailers, manufactur-ers and processors grouped into specific categories, with defined levels of potential risk associated aligned to that category,” Mayor John Brent said.

To aid this process, Council is currently seeking input from Scenic Rim businesses and individuals who hold food licenses through an online survey to gather informa-tion from relevant stakeholders.

The survey should take 5 - 10 minutes to complete. A link to the survey can be found on Council’s website at: www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/have-your-say. The online survey can be completed until 30th June 2013. For further information contact Council’s Environmental Health team on 5540 5444.

The Tree of KnowledgeBy Wayne Perry

A few years ago, there was a suggestion made to six gentlemen, who used to sit on the seat outside the Canungra Newsa-gent on the corner of Kidston Street and Lawton Lane, Canungra.

Someone said, “Why don’t you call it ‘The Seat of Knowledge’?”

As the years passed by, people said it nearly grew into a tree of knowledge. All these men were long term residents of Canungra, some whose parents and grandparents had lived in the area.

The names of these six gentlemen are: Leonard Champney, Lloyd Day, Hartley Geiger, Harvey Mahony, Des Marsden and myself, Wayne Perry.

We were all good Aussie mates. We would ask when one of us did not turn up. We would talk about politicians, which side of the cow we were going to milk

from and so forth. They were enjoyable mornings for all.

I am the only one still alive today. Many people have put their posterior on the seat, not knowing what it meant to us six men.

Recently a plaque was placed on the seat, carrying the names of the six gentle-men who were some of the early pioneers of Canungra.

They will never be forgotten.

Preparing for the AccountantBy Chris Ward, Corporate & Country Accounting

The end of financial year is approach-ing fast. Yep, it’s time to starting thinking about getting all your receipts for expenses and donations, invoices, car log book and other information ready to drop into the accountant.

If you’re like most of us that will mean pulling all the fuel receipts out of the car glove box and going through the infa-mous drawer in the kitchen where we have thrown all the paperwork collected during the year. Oh and the bank statements… have you noticed there is always one page missing!

On the other hand there are also clients who are organised. Everything is kept in a folder in order or the computer software is reconciled to the bank account and is accompanied by the relevant paperwork to make the accountant’s job less time consuming. So do these organised people pay lower fees? For more complex tax returns, yes definitely! There is an added advantage to reviewing your records and you are less likely to overlook an impor-tant deduction.

There are a number of methods used by tax professionals to set prices includ-ing: set fees, value based fees or, most commonly, an hourly rate for time spent preparing the return. Providing your records in an organised and summarised manner will assist the accountant in completing the return more efficiently and should help in reducing your fees.

So, a few suggestions:• If you have a pile of expense

receipts, provide them accompa-nied with a summary.

• Ensure all your bank statements are included.

• Provide a summary of all income and expenses and attach relevant documentation.

• Ensure your cash book or account-ing software is reconciled to your bank account.

• If you have any personal insur-ance or have made super contribu-tions provide copies of renewal or contribution notices.

• Collate all medical expenses and provide a summary.

To assist you, your accountant should be able to provide you with a checklist that fits your circumstances. Or when you visit your accountant ask them to review your records and entitlements and tell you if anything is missing. The Tax Office website also has a large range of occupa-tions with their allowable deductions and substantiation rules at www.ato.gov.au (do a search of your occupation).

Providing the right information on a timely basis should lead to lower costs and a faster turnaround time.

When you visit your accountant, also ask how they determine prices and what they estimate your tax preparation service might cost. However, because of the set fee or per-hourly rate, it may be impracti-cal for an accountant to provide you with an accurate price quote, therefore ask for a likely price range.

Best wishes for the tax season!

Love, Sweat and TearsBy Karen MacAndrew

The launch of Zelie Bullen’s biography Love, Sweat and Tears was held at the Australian Ouback Spectacular on Sunday 5th May 2013.

Attracting a crowd of approxi-mately 300 people, it felt more like a reunion of sorts as people from all walks of life, and as far away as Melbourne, gathered to help her launch her book and to celebrate with her as friends, family and neighbours.

This book is a story about how Zelie suffered great loss and grief and overcame those years to fulfill her dream of working with animals, and having a loving family. Although Zelie, her husband, Craig and son Colt, spend a great deal of time travelling for work they love coming home to their farm near Canungra.

The book was written by Zelie’s sister, Freda Nicholls, and they both talked of the process bringing them together.

Both women signed every book sold on the day, and Zelie included a personal message in each and every book. She took the time to recognise and celebrate every person who approached her and agreed to be photographed with those who asked.

Both Zelie and Freda made each signing so much more than any other book signing this writer had ever attended.

The launch was filled with moments of laughter and a few tears. The book is beautifully written and is a message of hope to others who are suffering through loss and is well worth the read.

Published by Allen and Unwin, Love, Sweat and Tears is available at all good book stores.

A Working HolidayLocal artist, Dianne Cecil, has recently returned from

a working holiday during which she gave watercolour lessons on a cruise ship.

Dianne, who was accompanied by her husband, Mike, was contracted by the Celebrity Cruise line as a guest entertainer for a Trans-Atlantic crossing from Miami, Florida, to Rome.

Dianne gave art lessons each morning of the days at sea for one hour, then for the remainder of the day they were able to enjoy all the facilities offered on the cruise. It was a seventeen day cruise, so ten of the days were travelling at sea and seven days in different ports.

Mike and Dianne were able to enjoy visiting different countries which included Spain, France and Italy. Diane said it was a wonderful experience.

“The weather was perfect, the ship was luxurious and the guests who attended the classes were very appreciative and delighted with what they had achieved,” said Diane.

conveyancing tipsBe Ready to Move Out / Move In

By Suzanne RobertsPractice Director,

Informed Conveyancing LawyersThe boxes are packed, the removalist is booked, elec-

tricity and phone have been arranged … but when do you actually ‘move’?

In the week leading up to your settlement, it is vital that you stay in contact with your solicitor to make sure that you have not only met all of your obligations under the Contract, but to know when and where the settlement is going to take place. Know your settlement time so that you can:• As a Seller – ensure that you have moved out, cleaned

the property and handed the keys to your Real Estate Agent prior to the settlement time so the Buyers can do their pre-settlement inspection.

• As a Buyer – advise your removalist of the time (you don’t want to keep them waiting $$) and, arrange with the Real Estate Agent to conduct a pre-settlement inspection prior to the settlement occurring. If you don’t know when the settlement is to occur, or

if you are required to attend to matters or even settlement itself to enable the settlement to be effected, then phone your solicitor and simply ask. If you don’t, your settle-ment could be delayed…which could cost you money!

What is Tree Surgery? And When Do We Need It?By Grahame Johnson,

Gold Coast Tree Surgery and ArboricultureWhy is it important to engage a profession-

al Tree Surgeon and what is the meaning of Arboriculture?

Most of us have heard of an Arborist or Tree Lopping contractors but very few people know the difference between a Tree Surgeon and a Tree lopper or an Arborist and an Arboricultur-ist so this article will try to clarify the differenc-es and the activities these different contractors are engaged in.

Although both a “Tree lopper” and a Tree Surgeon are primarily engaged in tree related activities, there are significant differences in the way they perform tree work. To begin with,Tree Surgeons don’t runaround with a stethoscope listening to the heart wood of a tree! A quali-fied Tree Surgeon has training in how and where to cut a branch or limb that will minimise the negative impact of the injury and in a manner will allow this injury to heal fastest.

Correct pruning is important to reduce the risk of disease or insect intrusion. Most tree loppers are skilled in chainsaw use and the removal of trees using ropes, pole straps and a harness and spikes attached to their boots and ankles to aid in climbing.

Tree surgeons are primarily engaged in the care and maintenance of a tree’s health and vigor. A tree surgeon uses ropes and harness to aid in climbing but doesn’t use spikes as this is further injury to the tree and can transfer disease from an infected tree into a healthy tree.

Most tree lopping contractors don’t have Arboricultural (Tree Surgery) training and any specialist activity performed on trees, other than complete removal, such as pruning, should be undertaken by a qualified Tree Surgeon. Indis-criminate “lopping” of branches can result in the introduction of “die back” disease and/or weak regrowth susceptible to shearing off in storms or strong winds with possible injury or damage to property.

so What is an arBoriculturist? Arbor is Latin for tree so the following expla-

nation may help to shed some light on things:*An Arborist - is a tree-ist (a person who

works on trees)?? *An Arboriculturist - is a tree-culturist (a

person trained in the culture of trees) and tree surgery is a large and important part of the train-ing undertaken by a qualified Arboriculturist.

An Arboriculturist will be familiar with the

horticultural requirements of not only trees but all plants, including climatic conditions and selection to a particular planting site, soil type and pH, fertilising and watering requirements, shade or full sun aspect, mulching and competi-tion from other plants.

Other activities undertaken by an Arboricul-turist/Tree Surgeon include: pest and disease diagnosis and control, cavity filling, tree safety assessing, installing root barriers and advanced tree transplanting. Tree Surgery activities include; storm damage repair, removal of dangerous or overhanging branches, canopy lifting or reduction, reducing sail area by thin-ning, dead wood removal, training and devel-opment such as developing framework for fruit trees, repairs to damaged bark on trunks or main branches, shaping a tree for balance, root pruning and many other activities.

A qualified tree surgeon will prune accord-ing to the Australian Standards AS 4373 - 2007. Please note that tree works may require council permission.

Trees are fantastic and we need them, but sometimes they can be bothersome, such as a huge Eucalypt towering over the house or a fig tree growing too close to underground pipes.

Sometimes you are left with the legacy of a beautiful tree too good to remove but planted in an unsuitable postion. So what can you do? Call a qualified Aboriculturist/Tree Surgeon for advice - preferably before you decide to plant.

Happy Planting!

coMMunity planDear Editor,Over 4000 respondents had their say on

the Scenic Rim Regional Council Commu-nity Plan resulting in a strong message to Council to look after our natural environ-ment and our rural lifestyle.

The community gave its elected repre-sentatives clear direction and now have every right to expect them to do everything in their power to follow that direction.

Indeed, the local government act gives Councillors, including the Mayor, a primary responsibility to ensure the local government “achieves its corporate and community plans”. (s12(3)(a)(ii)) Local Government Act 2009

Why then has there been no notifica-tion, no meetings, no press releases from Council informing the community of the large area in the Scenic Rim that State Government has nominated for approval as a key resource area (KRA) for resource extraction. Quarrying is about as far removed from looking after our natural environment and rural lifestyle as you can get.

The State Planning Policy containing the KRA was released for public comment on 14th April 2013 and I find it difficult

to believe that their plans for the Scenic Rim were not discussed with someone in Council, staff or councillor, prior to the release of the document.

Six quarries in total have been highlight-ed by the State for the region, five Rock and one Sand. Three of those are within twelve kilometres of Beaudesert, of which two will make the newly expanded Cryna Quarry look like a baby.

So why was it that the Quarry Action Group, in conjunction with local media, broke the news last week (22nd May) and not Council or our State MP?

Councillors who are saying this is a State matter are quite correct. But in the next breath to try to justify their inaction by saying it has nothing to do with them is an abrogation of their responsibility to the community. Not challenging the proposed KRA on the grounds of the community’s stated wishes in the Community Plan may even be in breach of their legislative responsibilities.Astrid KennedyScenic Rim Rate Payers Assoc.scenicrimratepayersassoc.org.au

it doesn’t have to Be a Fairy taleOnce upon a time, there was a little town nestled in

a valley. It was a pretty town, a place where people looked out for each other and cared for each other.

This town (let’s call it ‘Canungra’ shall we?) had a lot going for it, but the businesses and people struggled to support the community organisations financially because of the evil ‘GFC’ which had taken over the world and even had an effect in this idyllic village.

One day, someone had the idea to set up a commu-nity bank in the town, a bank which was owned by the townspeople in partnership with an established bank and distributed part of its profits to community organ-isations. The people rejoiced, because once this bank was set up, all they had to do to raise money for commu-nity organisations was ... nothing! They just changed their banking to the community bank and watched the money flow back into the town. The town flourished, and everyone lived happily ever after.

This doesn’t have to be a fairy tale! What we need is four or five people to join others on a steering committee to get this up and running. For more infor-mation call me on 5543 5532.

Iron Man 3

CT’s Movie ReviewIron Man 3

By Chloe PickardRated: M. Length: 2 hours, 9 mins. Director: Shane Black.Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce.

Robert Downey Jr makes a triumphant return as Tony Stark in the third Iron Man film, which I found to be the best of the trilogy.

Tony is facing panic attacks after the events of The Avengers, and there is a new threat to the world in the form of The Mandarin who has been attacking American bases and soldiers. To add to his problems, his relationship with Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) is starting to falter. Soon he will face the possibility of losing everything he loves and be forced to put himself in harm’s way again.

Tony is genuinely challenged in this film and must go back to his roots as an inventor. Iron Man 3 also introduces characters I’d love to see again, such as the funny and realistic boy Harley (played by Ty Simpkins), who Tony teams up with. It is also great to see Aussie actor Guy Pearce in a more mainstream film.

If this is the last Iron Man film, it’s a brilliant ending to the series. Iron Man 3 is a great blockbuster and I highly recommend seeing it in cinemas if you haven’t done so.

Nature’s GemsBrooMe Bird oBservatory

By Melissa Whitby

In my previous article, I described my experiences at the Kaarakin Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre in Perth, Western Australia. On this particular expedition, I also visited the birding mecca known as the Broome Bird Observatory which is the shorebird capital of Australia. It is 25kms from Broome on the shores of Roebuck Bay. The Observatory was established in 1988 by Birds Australia to promote the research, conservation and education of birds of the region.

Only 4WD vehicles are able to reach the Observatory via Crab Creek Road. Accommodation is available at the Obser-vatory in the form of camping and rooms. This accommodation can be obtained at a reasonable rate and is one of the cheap-est in the Broome region. My journey to the Observatory entailed a two-hour flight from Perth and then I hired a 4WD at the airport to drive to the Observatory.

Whilst I have good knowledge of Australian birds, shorebirds are a group that I have not spent a lot of time observing in the wild. This was the main reason that I wanted to visit the Observatory. March is the time of the year when many shorebird species are leaving on their annual migra-tion to their ancestral breeding grounds. Therefore, I was able to see many shore-birds leaving Roebuck Bay.

The Broome Bird Observatory offers a number of bird tours and I booked onto

the Shorebird Tour. Viewing shorebirds in Roebuck Bay depends on the tides and the birds tend to congregate in places known as high tide roosts. On the tour, particular areas where the shorebirds would rest were looked at. I was to get amazing close-up views of the birds and photograph them flying and congregating in their thousands.

Many Australians over their time will see a variety of shorebird species. With this in mind, it is easy to assume that these bird species are common. However, shorebirds that use the East Asian-Austral-asian flyway on their migration to breeding grounds face a number of threats. These threats include traditional refuelling food stopover sites being destroyed for human development and nest sites being elimi-nated. In the last 20 years of monitoring shorebird numbers at Roebuck Bay, there has been a noted decline. It is hoped that conservation measures throughout the East Asian-Australasian flyway will help remaining shorebird populations. Here at home, shorebird conservation is one of the best in the world. To help protect shore-birds in Australia it is important to protect nesting sites and protect shorebird congre-gation sites such as Roebuck Bay.

If you are interested in visiting the Broome Bird Observatory, check out their web site www.broomebirdobservatory.com.

Protect Against HendraBy Chris Corcoran, Canungra Veterinary Surgery

There is a vaccine available to protect horses from the deadly Hendra virus but unfortunately only a small percentage of the local horse population is currently vaccinated against the disease, despite the prevalence of flying foxes in our region.

The initial vaccine requires two separate doses, given 3-6 weeks apart. In order to encourage increased vacci-nation rates and to increase the affordability of the vaccine, the manufacturer is providing the second dose of the vaccine for free. This promotion is available to horse owners who organise the first vaccine to be admin-istered before the end of July 2013. We understand that this promotion does not reward people who have had their horse vaccinated previously. To reward owners who vaccinated soon after the launch of the vaccine, the supplier will provide a free tube of worming paste.

If you would like to take advantage of this promotion, please call Canungra Veterinary Surgery on 5543 5622.

Council CommentBy Cr Virginia West

Scenic Rim Regional Council

2013-14 BudgetBudget discussions are now underway for 2013-14. We in the Scenic Rim have a relative-

ly small population of approximately 38,000 living in a very large geographical area. The challenge for Council is developing a Budget that delivers the high standard of services and infrastructure our residents expect and deserve, while keeping rates and charges at a reason-able level. We are committed to building a strong future for the Scenic Rim and Council is working hard to negotiate a Budget that is balanced, practical and financially responsible.

constitutional recognition oF local governMentThe Federal Government has committed to hold a referendum on the constitutional recog-

nition of local government at the September election and I urge residents to vote in favour of this important issue for local Council and their communities. Formal recognition of local government in the Australian Constitution will give local councils financial certainty by protecting direct federal funding for community services and infrastructure. Without this funding, programs such as Roads to Recovery are at risk. Local councils across the country, including the Scenic Rim, are encouraging residents to vote ‘yes’ in the referendum in the interest of the community.

open studiosOpen Studios of the Scenic Rim is now in full swing. We’ve seen some fantastic events

with the commencement of the Drumley Walk and Murri Arts in Residence at Beaudes-ert, Arts in the Olives at the Lost World Valley and open studios on Tamborine Mountain. Beechmont and Canungra will be showcasing their open studios on 1st and 2nd June with local artists Tamlyn Geiger, Roberta Shaw, Gerard Walker, Vanessa Laverty and El Hogan presenting their art in a variety of venues around Canungra. For more information pick up a trails booklet at the Canungra Information Centre or log on to www.liveatthecentre.com.au.

goat track progressI know many residents are concerned with the Goat Track, a State-controlled road still

closed to traffic. Can I assure you that the Department of Transport and Main Roads are currently working on site removing debris from the damaged section in preparation for further geotechnical investigations and they will keep the community informed as this progresses. This is part of the reason there are so many trucks through town each week day.

council capital WorksInside this issue of the Canungra Times you will find a list of Council’s Capital Works

projects for 2012-13 and their current status. It is great to see that even with the devastat-ing effects of the storm event earlier this year, many of our planned projects have been completed.

CANUNGRA 75TH ANNUAL SHOW CELEBRATIONSAlong with other activities to mark the 75th anniversary of Canungra Show, there will be a

‘BRANDING OF THE BAR’ on Monday 19th August from 3pm - following the fat cattle judging at the

showgrounds. There are already many of the districts’ brands burnt into the timber behind the bar, so if you have a brand and would like it to become part of the history of the

showgrounds, email your details to [email protected] by 1 August 2013 and join us for an afternoon of fun that will be recorded in our history.

By now you know that we have to replace the fence of the main ring at the show-grounds due to its age and condition. Again, you are able to donate a panel of

fencing and have your name (or your family name) engraved onto the panel for $250.00. This is another way of adding your name to the history of our town for

generations to come. Please email the above address for any queries you may have regarding the brand-ing or panels and show your support to the town in our bid to ‘keep the Austra-

lian dream alive’ for smaller annual shows in this country.

Regional Council made a record investm

ent in the region’s infrastructure to ensure it continued to meet the needs of the region w

ell into the future. Much of this spending w

as directed at delivering “bitum

en and bridges” to improve the region’s road netw

ork. As part of Council’s comm

itment to engaging w

ith the Scenic Rim com

munity, last Septem

ber we detailed the full scope and scale of

our planned Capital Works Program

. I am pleased to report that despite the heavy blow

dealt to this region by ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald and subsequent w

eather events, Council has made great strides in

delivering this unprecedented program of w

orks and improvem

ents. Unfortunately, the impact of a third natural disaster in as m

any years did take a toll, causing significant damage to local infrastructure and

resulting in delays to some planned w

orks. We also find ourselves in a position w

here infrastructure repaired following the 2011 and 2012 disasters has been redam

aged or fresh damage caused. Council

will repair this dam

age as part of its ongoing recovery and restoration program. On behalf of Council, I thank you for your patience as w

Regional Council made a record investm

our planned Capital Works Program

dealt to this region by ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald and subsequent w

delivering this unprecedented program of w

resulting in delays to some planned w

1st May - secretary’s dayThe school celebrated Secretary’s Day by acknowledging the welcom-ing, friendly and efficient office staff who treat everyone in the School community with patience and kindness - Salli-Ann Gregor, Jana Zehr, Bernie Campbell and Ali Ellis.

3rd May - Jingeri WalkYear 6 students participated in the Jingeri Walk as part of the Drumley Walk. The Jingeri Walk is a special offering to encourage local school students to learn and access their local Yugambeh, Munanjali and other Aboriginal stories. It is part of the Drumley Walk – an annual pilgrimage in the footsteps of local Aboriginal identity Billy Drumley who is remem-bered by today’s community for his leadership and work ethic.

4th May - creek Bank Working BeeThe Green Team organised a Working Bee, with a focus on planting lots of new trees on the creek bank. There was a free sausage sizzle afterwards for all volunteers. Working Bees are held once each term and it is amazing what can be achieved. It is a fantastic lesson to kids not only in environ-mental awareness, but also about being active and involved citizens.7th May - cross country carnivalAll students, from Prep to Year 7, participated in the annual Cross Country Carnival, with many parents cheering the students on as spectators. Congratulations to all students for great behaviour, sportsmanship and the fitness it took to complete such a challenging run. The winning house for the day was Flying Fox.

9th May - Mother’s day stallStudents were given the opportunity to purchase gifts for their mums at the annual Mother’s Day stall.

14th - 16th May - naplanStudents in Years 3, 5 and 7 participated in the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), covering Language Conventions and Writing, Reading and Numeracy.

22nd May - national siMultaneous reading dayPrincipal Colleen Murphy read The Wrong Book. All classes also created a craft product, making it an interactive session as well.

24th May - p&c Movie nightThe first P&C movie night for the year was an opportunity for the whole family to come along to see a movie and enjoy the company of friends. The school supplied fresh, hot popcorn.

Several residents have recently expressed concerns about the manner in which youth offenders are dealt with by police and courts, particu-larly those who graffiti our local community parks and other community equipment.

I encourage all Canungra area residents to contact me with their concerns and also to contribute to the LNP Government’s Blueprint for Youth Justice by completing the Crime Survey on the web at http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/youth-justice/bueprint-for-the-future-of-youth-justice.

This action plan will set the path for the future of youth justice, sentencing policy, early intervention options and the expansion of youth “boot camps” to keep young people on track and is your opportunity to contribute directly to the LNP Government’s youth justice policy. If you would like to make a submission to the survey but do not have internet access, please let me know. The deadline for submission is 30th June.

In April, Premier Campbell Newman announced a tripling of support for the Get In The Game initiative for grassroots sport. Round 1 of this program had overwhelming demand, and several sporting clubs in the Electorate were able to obtain grants to improve their facilities.

I encourage all sporting clubs in the Canungra area to consider apply-ing for a grant to enhance sport in the community – whether it be for $150 vouchers under the Get Started segment to help kids with registration fees, up to $10,000 under the Get Going segment to top dress grounds, repair or maintain off-field facilities, or up to $100,000 under the Get Playing segment to assist with development of facilities.

This is a terrific initiative to increase participation in sport and recre-ation, particularly by our children. For more information, visit ww.nprsr.qld.gov.au/funding/getinthegame.

Nominations are now open for the Telstra Business Women’s Awards, celebrating the success stories of local women and offering support and encouragement to the next generation. Finalists and winners across Australia will share in $200,000 in cash and prizes. Nominations close on 25th June 2013 and more information can be obtained at www.telstra-businessawards.com.

The Beaudesert Electorate Office has now moved to Beaudesert. Our new contact details are: 91 Brisbane Street, Beaudesert, PO Box 656, Beaudesert 4285, phone 5541 4283.

Please contact me if I can be of assistance in any matter.By email: [email protected] or on Facebook: www.

By Jodie Clifford, Canungra State School Green Team

canungra state school WorM FarMCanungra State School has installed a

commercial sized Worm Farm for use by the school community. The need for this facility has been identified within the School Environment Management Plan (SEMP) that assessed the neces-sity for improved waste management systems. The aim of the project is to recycle food waste and process this into a nutrient rich resource for use around the school and to provide students with the opportunity to develop practical experience with the facility. The objectives of the Worm farm facility are:• Utilise food waste and other organic materials from the school commu-

nity and produce nutrient rich fertiliser.• Improve school grounds and garden beds with Canungra Worm farm

castings.• Reduce the number of waste bins Canungra State School generates each

week• Engage school children, parents and staff to contribute to the manage-

ment of the worm farm system and increase their knowledge in the field of Vermicomposting!

• Undertake field trips and Worm farming workshops for other schools and the greater community

• Expand and utilise waste from local businesses to reduce waste produc-tion in the greater community

‘nude Food’ and WorMsStudents currently hosts two Nude Food days each week where they

are encouraged to pack a lunchbox with no commercial packaging. Food waste is collected in buckets in eating areas and fed to our 80,000 plus worms! These materials can be cycled back to the garden as compost through vermicomposting, instead of being wasted and sent to landfill. Many students (and parents – thank you!) are now taking the initiative and packing Nude Food lunchboxes every day of the week! This has assisted us to reduce our wheelie bin collection by 5 bins each week!

nude Food tips• Purchase an insulated lunchbox with containers and ice brick to fit.• Fruit such as bananas, apples, citrus are fantastic as they have their own

packaging!• Buy bulk items and decant down into containers for lunches (it’s

cheaper too!).• Include the kids in choice of foods, baking and packing of lunches.• Nude Food is not Rude! Have fun and be creative!

css green teaM May Working BeeBy Jodie Clifford

The days are growing shorter, the soil (and weather) is cooling and plant growth is slowing down. Thankfully the enthusiasm displayed by our fantastic volunteers is not following that pattern!

Our May Working Bee again saw a great response with over 25 people attending and sneaking in our last planting before Winter.

One hundred riparian (creekside) tubestock were installed in record time, with the morning concluded with our popular sausage sizzle and social catch-up.

Thanks again to all those who attended, our groundsman Trevor Skelton, Principal Colleen Murphy and Foodworks for their continued generous donation of our morning tea.

Festival Celebrates Scenic Rim ProducersScenic Rim food and wine producers

will be celebrated during the Eat Local Week festival, which runs throughout the region from 23rd to 30th June.

The week of cooking classes, farm tours, food and wine tastings and hosted dinners culminates in a Winter Harvest Festival on 29th June.

Eat Local Week is a celebration of the people who produce food and wine in the Scenic Rim and recognition of the fact that agriculture and tourism are pivotal to the prosperity of the region, contributing more than $210-million annually to the regional economy.

Eat Local Week is a Scenic Rim Regional Council initiative but has been enthusiastically embraced by the Scenic Rim community since launching in 2011. The event encourages residents and visi-tors to the region to ask the questions – Where does your food come from and who produces it?

Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent, himself a third generation vegetable producer, says participants can meet the producers and follow the journey from paddock to plate.

“Brisbane and Gold Coast residents may not realise that much of the food they consume was grown in the Scenic Rim, which is located just one hour’s drive away,” says Cr Brent.

“We are fortunate to have such fertile farming land, closely located to the city and tourism and agriculture account for more than 30 per cent of the businesses operating in this region.

“Throughout the year our producers supply beef, pork, dairy products, chicken and boutique food and wine products to the market.

“Eat Local Week is a celebration of this industry and of the people who not only grow the food, but those who sell it. During

the week participating cafes, restaurants and caterers are asked to make Scenic Rim food and wine a feature of their menus. It’s a great opportunity for visitors to learn first-hand how their food is produced and seek tips for impressing in the kitchen.”

Eat Local Week starts on Sunday 23rd June with activities including Beechmont Zest Fest, celebrating the homegrown enterprises of the mountain community. The popular event will feature cooking and horticulture demonstrations, live local music, market stalls and activities for children.

During the following week Eat Local Week will feature food and wine tasting events, cooking classes for adults and chil-dren, a communal brunch, and an oppor-tunity to pick your own carrots and see what happens to them after they leave the paddock.

On Tuesday 25th June, Minister for Agriculture, John McVeigh will offi-cially launch the Scenic Rim 4 Real Milk brand, created by Tamrookum dairy farmer Greg Dennis in response to the price pressures being placed on dairy farmers by major processors and retailers.

Finally, on 29th June the event culmi-nates in the Winter Harvest Festival at Aratula. The Festival runs from noon to 5pm at the Aratula Community Centre and features many of the region’s food and wine producers. Guests can buy a tasting plate, stock up on fresh local produce and gourmet products, including cheese, olives, olive oil, coffee, tea and more.

The Winter Harvest Festival will also feature live music by local artists and plenty of activities for the kids.

A full schedule of Eat Local Week events is available at www.eatlocalweek.com.au

Beechmont and Canungra combine for Zest FestBy Sally MacKinnon

Zest Fest 2013 kicks off Eat Local Week on Sunday 23rd June at the Hall on Graceleigh, Beechmont Rd, Beechmont.

This year the connections between Beech-mont and Canungra are stronger than ever and a number of Canungra businesses will be show-cased at Zest including:• Canungra State School’s Green Team with

displays and hands-on activities.• Greenlee Macadamia Farm with macadamia

goodies.• Oliva Di Tabragalba olives and olive products.• Aquaponics with Zest organiser and Canungra

resident Mark Pickard.• Hinterland Harvest Catering’s Kate Raymont

for delicious lunches.• Bean In with cakes and baked goodies.

Over the past three years, Canungra resident and sustainability consultant Mark Pickard has been an integral member of the Zest Fest organ-ising team.

He has focused his energies on connecting the Beechmont and Canungra communities, partic-ularly around local food and sustainability and has helped shape the creative atmosphere.

“Mark brings an amazing level of local knowledge to Zest Fest,” said organiser Sally MacKinnon.

“He does an enormous amount of work to bring the Beechmont and Canungra

communities together so we can collaboratively present the best of our local food and sustain-ability services at the festival.”

“Many Beechmont residents shop at Canungra because it’s the closest village to our community.

“So Zest Fest is a way we can thank many Canungra businesses and services for helping to provide for our community.

Zest Fest opens at 9.30am on Sunday 23rd June. Entry is $5 for adults with children free.

There will be an all-day Children’s Program, Community Conversations and Community Drumming in the morning and local music from midday to 4pm including The Will Miller Three, Lily White, Paul Robert Burton and Afro Pulse.

For more information visit: http://beechmont.org.au/events/zest-fest.

Robyn and Morgan Lee of Greenlee Farm will be at Zest Fest 2013

Golf Club Gets Funding BoostMember for Beaudesert Jon Krause said Canungra Area

Golf Club has received funding as part of the Sport and Recreation Disaster Recovery Program following flood damage by ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald earlier this year.

The Club received $2,200 to repair the main causeway and buggy causeway.

Mr Krause said he was pleased to announce that Canungra Area Golf Club was one of four clubs in the Beaudesert electorate to receive funding.

The funding is much needed by the Club which recently had the Clubhouse demolished. The course has reopened with a new temporary Clubhouse.

Under 9’s at Nerang CarnivalBy David Baker

Nerang held an Under 9 carnival on Sunday 26th May

and both our Under 9 teams competed under blue skies and watched by support-ive crowds.

The Green team were short a couple of players but battled on regardless and held their own right to the last game. Even playing without a full team the Green side were not beaten by much and tried their best. Thanks to coach Stephen Mills and the parents who helped with what looked to be a very well catered for tent.

The Gold team came second in their group, recording good victories against Palm Beach, Southport and Nerang. Unfortunately a very physical Runaway Bay side sneaked past Canungra 1 - nil.

Thanks to coach Colin Hasler, manager Leonie Nicholson and player parents for giving the boys an opportunity to compete at what for many was their first carnival.

Our Under 13 team was put into Divi-sion 2 after the grading rounds and at the time of printing are undefeated. Well done to a team made up of many Under 12’s and a few girls who are beating all male teams. Keep it up and we may see you in the finals!!!

The Under 11’s are short of players and have a few first time players but managed their first win of the season on 19th May. Those who played at Mt Tamborine the week before in driving rain, shrouded in cloud and short of players will remember that game for a long time.

The Under 10’s recorded their first win and coach Greg Mathers is very happy with the improvement as the season progresses.

Thank you to Scenic Rim Regional Council for providing grant monies to treat Moriarty Park for ants.

Any men interested in playing for Canungra Owls next season can register interest with Will Sayer on 0437 434 955 or Bren Dalby on 0414 435 919.

The women’s team are currently second on the ladder and you can support them Wednesday night 5th June at 7 pm at Mori-arty Park. Hot meals and cold drinks are available on the night.

The Canungra Hotel allows the club to conduct meat tray raffles every second Sunday lunchtime and we require volun-teers to continue this vital fundraiser which allows our fees to remain low. Please call Bren Dalby 0414 435 919 if you are inter-ested in helping out one Sunday.

Enjoy Music and Get FitSome people may think that Zumba is just another over-

hyped exercise program. However, you may not realise that it actually took years to develop and is truly unique because of the variety of influences and original approach to exercising and dancing.

Latin rhythms are a general part of the routine, so you get to enjoy music, stay fit and absolutely de-stress at the same time, guaranteed.

Beto Perez is the celebrity fitness trainer who discovered the concept of using Latin dances for a fitness program. The Latin-inspired fitness program originated in his native Colombia in South America during the 1990s. During one of his classes, he forgot to bring the usual aerobic tapes and was forced to use the ones in his car. Most were merengue and salsa, so he had to make up moves on the spot. Afterwards, he realised how much fun and effective the changes were and improved the program, leading to the recent Zumba.

Zumba is inspired by Latin dance and music and incor-porates several styles in the routine like merengue, reggae-ton, pop, cumbia, mambo, salsa, salsaton, flamenco, rumba and calypso. The selections of music involve both slow and fast rhythm so dancers can tone and sculpt their body well.

Zumba uses the principles of resistance training and fitness interval training to enhance caloric output, overall body toning and fat burn. It is a method of combining easy dance steps with movements that sculpt the body. The program is also very fun and addictive.

Zumba caters for everyone, whether you travel at full speed or you need to move slower, it is up to you. Any person can begin a Zumba class to have fun and indulge in the variety of music and influences. Kids, teenagers, adults and seniors can enjoy the various moves. Even those who have physical limitations or are confined in a wheelchair can enjoy and burn more calories. You can start even if you are not good at dancing or consider your-self as a true beginner. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing and enjoy the steps and movements, feeling the music and getting in shape. If your excuse is “I’m too unco-ordinated” - truthfully, all it takes is practice.

Zumba can keep you in shape, since you burn so many calories in a given session. Each class lasts approximately one hour each. Some say that you can burn at least 470 calories in a single session. You only need to do the workout two to three times a week to stay fit and lean. Zumba can also enhance your motor control and perfor-mance. As you go on practicing the moves, you get to have more control over your muscles

I’ve been doing Zumba for three years. So give it a go and see what you think. Classes are at the School of Arts Hall on Tuesdays at 4pm (kids welcome) and Fridays at 6pm.
