Hello EA members! The best way to describe our May 6 th Sunday lunch is ‘AWESOME’! We had an overwhelming attendance of around 220 people, pack into our hall as we celebrated Mother’s Day in true Eurasian style with music, dancing and yummy food. All mothers and grandmothers (almost 100 of them!!!) were presented with a special gift while a touching rendition of ‘Have I told you lately that I love you’ was sung by the band ‘Klassworks’. A grateful thank-you goes to all our cooks, the band and all who contributed to the success of the day’s activities. A fantastic effort was made by everyone and we had such a wonderful time! Due to the overwhelming and unexpected attendance, about 10 of our members and guests missed out on purchasing lunch. I would like to extend my sincerest apologies for this unfortunate circumstance. We hope to make it up to you when you attend our next lunch……I am so sorry! We implemented a few new practices at our lunch which has turned out to be pleasantly successful : we gave away a free meal to the over 90’s and a half price meal to the over 80’s for the first time; the new ‘pre-paying’ of lunch orders saw us clear close to 200 meals in 45 minutes; the ‘twist’ in the membership draw brought a new challenge for members to make sure they attend our Sunday lunches regularly and a waiver of the joining fee for 3 months saw 9 new members and 4 renewals into our membership. Please take full advantage of this ‘promotion’ and encourage your friends and family to join our membership as soon as possible before this ‘special offer’ ends. THE EURASIAN JUNE 2012 VOL 28 ISSUE 3 aeawa.asn.au The Management Committee (MC) is currently in full swing planning activities and events for the year. We hope to be able to present a calendar of these events in next month’s newsletter so that you can plan and diarise your schedule around our activities. The MC is making every effort to improve your member benefits and will facilitate changes and activities to achieve this end. Your involvement and participation in these programmes will see a corresponding increase in your member benefits. So, please come and join us and I’m sure we will have lots of fun along the way! Our plan for our new ‘Community Service’ role is also taking shape as we hope to build on issues of member support services, children services and health and legal talks to assist our members. This is predominantly a ‘members helping members’ approach and I hope to be able to call on your support and assistance in this much needed area as we attempt to do more, particularly for our more mature, needy and family group members who may need our help. We have our Winter Dance on the 7 th of July at the RAAFA hall in Bullcreek where we have organised two bands for your continuous listening and dancing pleasure and a few prize giveaways along the way as well. Tickets are selling fast as we are expecting a good turn out with only $15 for members and $20 for non members. Please see any of the MC for your table bookings or any enquiries. I look forward to catching up with you, your friends and your guests at our next Sunday lunch on the 10 th of June and as usual we will have lots planned for your entertainment and enjoyment. I also love to see the children playing outside and having so much fun so remember to bring them along to our very own Sunday session…..a la Eurasian! Till then take care and God Bless! Hello EA members! The best way to describe our May 6th Sunday lunch is ‘AWESOME’! We had an overwhelming

attendance of around 220 people, pack into our hall as we celebrated Mother’s Day in true Eurasian style with music, dancing and yummy food. Due to the overwhelming and unexpected

attendance, about 10 of our members and guests

missed out on purchasing lunch. I would like to

extend my sincerest apologies for this unfortunate

circumstance. We hope to make it up to you when

you attend our next lunch……I am so sorry!

We implemented a few new practices at our lunch which has turned out to be pleasantly successful : we gave away a free meal to the over 90’s and

a half price meal to the over 80’s for the first time;

the new ‘pre-paying’ of lunch orders saw us clear close to 200 meals in 45 minutes;

the ‘twist’ in the membership draw brought a new challenge for members to make sure they attend our Sunday lunches regularly and

a waiver of the joining fee for 3 months saw 9 new members and 4 renewals into our membership. Please take full advantage of this ‘promotion’ and encourage your friends and family to join our membership as soon as possible before this ‘special offer’ ends.

SPECIALS FOR OUR OVER 80s

Members aged 80 and over from May

2012 will be given 50% off of the cost

of their main meal.

Members over 90 years will, from

May 2012 receive their main meal free.

PRE-PAID LUNCH VOUCHERS

To serve the lunches faster, purchase a pre-paid

lunch voucher. This is how it works:

When you arrive you get a numbered ticket as

usual.

You then purchase a lunch voucher at the en-

trance, currently $6 (half price for over 80’s).

You may also purchase a side dish voucher.

When your number is called, present your

numbered ticket plus the voucher at the kitchen

and get your meal.

(N.B: One ticket = one main meal + side dish).

A gentle plea - please have the correct amount handy

to save us running out of change.

In the unfortunate event that we run out of all

meals, we will refund your money.

The Management Committee en-

courages and welcomes constructive

feedback from members. All signed

suggestions will be responded in

writing.

There’s a new Twist to

the Member’s Draw ...

The first name drawn will win $40 in

June.

If that member is not present, we will

continue drawing names until some-

one wins a consolation prize of $30.

The surplus $10 will be added to the

next month’s draw which then jack-

pots to $50 and so on.

In other words, one member will walk

away with $30 every lunch, but to win

the jackpot, it’s the first name drawn.

So be there to win it!!

WAIVER OF FEES

As part of our promotion

for our membership drive,

the joining fee of $20.00

will be waived for any new

members in May, June and

July.

How many of you have arrived back from an overseas holiday carrying your

much loved delicacies only to have them seized by a quarantine officer?

In the next few issues, quarantine matters will be discussed in an attempt to enlighten our

readers about border protection topics. It needs to be appreciated that Australia, as an island

continent, is susceptible to pest and diseases which threaten our $30 billion annual

agricultural export industries.

Pests and diseases can be carried by people, by animals, in animal products e.g. meat and

milk, plants, timber or soil. Therefore, quarantine procedures aim at reducing quarantine

risks to a very low level, while also recognising that complete freedom from quarantine risks

can never be guaranteed.

You may sight similar seized products at the local Asian deli, however, these goods have

been imported under an import permit. What arrives at the airport in your luggage lacks an

import permit.

If you are in doubt, and before travelling, check www.aqis.gov.au and click

the ‘ICON’ link – this will give you import conditions for selected products.

Avian Influenza (or Bird Flu)

A viral disease that affects domestic and wild birds e.g. chickens, ducks, etc. An outbreak in

Australia will be costly to the poultry industry with the added risk of humans contracting the

disease which has proven to be fatal.

Of particular concern are eggs, egg products e.g. egg shells, poultry meat, and feathers which

could harbour the virus. All these products must be declared on arrival and are subject to

inspection.

ERNIE LOPEZ A profile of a past President of AEAWA and a

very supportive member as appeared in the

May issue of the "SENIORS" monthly magazine.

If you have made a donation to the Heart Foundation in WA, you might have spoken with Ernie Lopez. Ernie, who migrated to Australia from Ma-laysia in 1992, started supporting the foun-dation in 1999 after his brother survived a heart attack. In 2002 he began helping out at the Perth office, where he still works on a variety of projects, including making thank you calls to donors and boosting morale with his steady supply of jokes. He also works with Volunteering WA to provide gardening help and one-on-one assistance taking people shopping or to medical appointments, and in 2008 he de-cided to leave a gift in his will to the Heart Foundation to help fund further research.

His volunteer work follows an adventurous working life. Mr Lopez grew up in Malaysia and joined the army at age 14, taking part in officer-cadet training which led him to Sandhurst Royal Military Academy in the UK. In 1964 he was part of a Malaysian dele-gation to the UN Security Council to pro-test against Indonesian aggression. After retiring from the armed forces he worked as a marketing consultant in Kuala Lumpur before relocating to Australia. To leave a bequest to the Heart Founda-tion, phone 9382-5925.
