SLAP NEWS JUNE 2012

As we go to press Becky Hill having reached the semi-final stage of BBC1's The Voice was unlucky to notprogress any further in the competition. Fair to say thatit's been an up-and-down time recently for the Bewdley18 year-old as she let slip the f-word as she startedperforming 'Seven Nation Army' on the live Saturdaynight show. Earlier in the week she'd rugby-tackled Jessieonto a couchduring rehearsals- she certainlymade an impact! We at Slap wishher all the bestas she is now togo on tour withthe other lasteight acts.

As reported in last month's SLAP the New Hope charityin Wells Road, Worcester has been selected by WorcesterMusic Festival as this year's beneficiary. It was set up byJean Wilson in 2010 to help children with disabilities andcomplex health needs - and relies totally on fundraisingto keep running. There's also a nice connection to WMFas Jean's son Will Hughes is the bassist with festivalregulars Jasper In The Company Of Others and Robinson.

Keep an eye on fast-rising hip-hop a capella siblingsDone By Surise who've already secured a high-profile gigsupporting X-Factor finalist Misha B at the River Roomsin Stourbridge. DBS only formed in late 2011 and cut theirperforming teeth at just about every open mic eventdoing the rounds -experimenting andrefining their set atevery opportunity.S i n g e r / gu i t a r i s tScott Howland hashinted that moregood news about theband is on the wayvery soon - definitelyan outfit to keep an eye on!!

Congratulations to Malvern's Sam Eden for making itthrough to the final of Live & Unsigned at the O2 inLondon in July. Just missing out on a shot at the £10000first prize were Evesham's I Am Ryan - who have alreadylined up appearances at Wychwood Festival atCheltenham Racecourse and Stamford Festival inLincolnshire over the summer.

Peace (ex November AndThe Criminal) have followedup their ground-breakingtours of recent weekssupporting Manic StreetPreachers and Mystery Jetsby getting signed toColumbia Records - hometo not only the Manics butalso the likes of Bob Dylan,Leonard Cohen, FooFighters, Kings Of Leonetc... The always edgy indiefour-piece celebrated theirsigning by persuadingColumbia to sponsor abillboard in Digbeth,Birmingham with theslogan 'What The F***Birmingham' in 2-foot-highletters. They've got spots atLatitude Festival and theHMV Institute (supportingThe Editors) lined up in thecouple of months and arelooking to release their firstalbum on their new label in2013 - but still bafflingly every press release says they'refrom Birmingham - here at SLAP we feel they should betold...

SAVE KIDDERMINSTERLIBRARY GALLERYThe campain to save Kidderminster library gallery is the

coming together of the community to defend the onlycustom built gallery and performance space in the district. The 'powers that be' plan to move 139 social care staffinto our library gallery. An asset which was funded bylottery money, making us believe their actions will benefitthe culture of the area and save money by closing downa space they've labeled as 'empty'. Surley there are bettersolutions to be cost effective?Today I attended an open meeting where people voiced

their opinions on the proposed plan to close the 3rd floorgallery space and 'bump it off' down to the ground floor.A purpose built gallery environment, allowing it to houseexhibitions from some great artists, who voiced tonightthat 'there is no other space like it in the Wyre Forest withits large, versatile open planning and light'. We heard fromKAF members and the BHG gallery who said that if we areto save the gallery we need show what it is capable of, itneeds to evolve into something more than it stands at themoment, and to make sure it is seen as an accessible spacefor everyones use.The gallery was also acoustically enginered for the use

of the grand piano, with temperature and humiditycontrols, and members of the classical music society whouse the gallery as a performance space for weekly eventsand recitals, were here to say that the proposed plan tomove the grand piano to the busy ground floor would bean absurd idea! It would mean disruption to people tryingto use the library facilities and is just not the rightenvironment for such an instrument. As well as being used for movie screenings and

community meetings, it is clear that Its sole purpose isnot just somewhere to come and look at art! With theclosure of so many community spaces, the move of thisspace and everything it caters for will mean the town andsurounding areas will be losing out!Maybe we are all a little guilty of shooting ourselves in

the foot by not vistiting and embracing our local facilitiesenough! And making these people think that some areasare unused money draining resources that can be takenaway without a fuss. But these are YOUR spaces that needto be kept, we dont want it seen resigned to history likeso many other places, once it is lost it will never bereplaced! To help... PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION, SIGN UP TO THE

CAMPAIN, CONTACT YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR ANDMAKE YOUR FEELINGS KNOWN, ATTEND THE PLANNINGCOMMITTEE MEETING ON THE 10TH JULY AT COUNTYHALL, WRITE TO YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER and spread theword SAVE THE GALLERY!

While the music press and connosseurs of bluesyrootsy vibes wax long and lyrical about just how damngood ‘Rooster’, the latest long player by Babajack is, theband are hard at it, out on the road doing what they dobest: playing their particularly fine acoustic folk blues toappreciative audiences the length and breadth of thecountry. The tickets are going like the proverbial warmedup Mr Kiplings, gigs are selling out and new dates arebeing added to satisfy the demand to see the bandvariously described by Bluesmatters as 'One of thehottest and original acts on the circuit' and 'Refreshinglydifferent…. Addictive… Take the time to catch this bandlive, you wont regret it.'As if reviews like these aren't enough, the Malvern

favourites have recently not only managed the prettyimpressive feat of scooping up a British Blues Awardsnomination in the acoustic category but also havingtheir absolutely aces vocalist/cajon player, Bec, getnominated for an award all of her very own in the 'other'instrumentalist category. Way to go girl, top stuff indeedconsidering there are only four nominees. Facing stiffcompetition from the so called big boys at this yearsBritish Blues Awards Trev, Bec and Marc will no doubtshow the judges and audience at the 2012 Newark BluesFestival why Blues in Britain (issue 114) stated that'Babajack are fast becoming the acoustic blues act tosee.' Whilst Baths Listomania stated 'They do groove likedemons'.

With their third album Rooster garnering reviews suchas '….mesmeric groove, they're seriously atmospheric' -Classic Rock and 'Impressive rhythms… impassioned…Terrific Blues, though not for the faint hearted' - R2, I'mpretty sure that it wont be long before Babajack are oneof the big boys.Slap Magazine would like to take this opportunity to

wish Trev, Bec and Marc all the best for the upcomingawards and Slap Mag will be sure to catch up with theband in the near future. For more news, reviews, gigdates and the chance to purchase one of the lastremaining copies of the limited edition vinyl release ofRooster check out www.babajack.com

LESS THAN 100 DAYSUNTIL WORCESTERMUSIC FESTIVALIT’S less than 100 days until this year’s Worcester

Music Festival hits the city, with 40 original bandsand artists booked by promoters so far. Organisers arelooking at around 300 to perform over the four days(August 24-27) total, so a busy few months ahead. The next important date in the diary for SLAP

readers is the big Worcester Music Festival fundraiser, which is, essentially, the festival hijacking June’sAcoustic Lunch on Sunday; June 24th (1-6pm) at theOld Rectifying House. All money donated at the eventwill go towards making the festival as brilliant aspossible, so all support welcome. In charity news, festival organisers went up to New

Hope, WMF charity of the year 2012, to meet JeanWilson, who runs the Ronkswood respite centre forchildren with disabilities and complex healthcareneeds and a place which gives families a much-needed break.

Unbeknown to the festival committee, Jean’s son is thebassist in Worcester’s Jasper In The Company Of Others, afantastic link in the quest to support both local music andgood causes. Finally, a big thanks to the 1,700 people who came to

see Worcester Music Festival at The Hive last month, afeast of live, original music and workshops, and thechance to have a sneaky peek inside the golden-roofedlibrary and history centre before it opens next month. For more on Worcester Music Festival, visit

FEATURED ARTIST JOSE SANTOSBorn in Oaxaca, Mexico, Jose Santos is an artist who

specialises in printmaking. Encouraged by his mother atthe age of 10 to pursue his interest in art, he took his firstlessons in painting where exposure to art practices and avariety of cultural experiences found him developing akeen interest in the master painters. After studying to be a priest, gaining further depth and

understanding of theology and continuing to immersehimself in a culturally rich environment, he fuelled furtherhis interest in art eventually taking a course in printingand etching, a practice that he continues to perfect andexperiment with today.

‘My work explores the conceptual distinctions commonlymade between nature and imagination.I consider my compositions as a series of marks.

Consciously or unconsciously this mark making willawaken the viewer to interact with the piece.’After living in the USA, Jose moved to the UK in 1997

where he has remained since. Last summer he completedhis BA in Fine art at the University of Worcester where he

now resides and continues to work. You can see hiscollection at the Cellar Gallery, Worcester Arts Workshop,22nd June until 21st July.‘At times you can see pain and disappointment in my

work, I relate this to my frustrated mind, and to the painand loneliness in the world today. I strongly believe thatart is a powerful medium that can contribute to positivehuman consciousness and promote change.’

Jose’s show runs until 21st July. You can check out hiswork here:www.jsantos.co.uk

Bishops PalaceWorcester’s Bishop’s Palace on Deansway in Worcester

is not normally open to the public, so given anopportunity to see inside during a wedding I wanted toshare its treasures with SLAP readers. Some parts of thebuilding, especially the vaulted undercroft, date from as

long ago as 1250 although most of what is visible aboveground was renovated in 1720. It is now a grade onelisted building and nominated by English Heritage as aScheduled Monument. It was first built as a residencefor the Bishop of Worcester, and is now used as offices forthe Church of England but through the years has hostedthree royal visits to the city: Queen Elizabeth II, James IIand George III. The wooden panelled great hall has a largewindow with beautiful stained detail, and the fireplacehas delicately moulded plaster. There are variouspaintings of Worcester hung around the walls, andancient furniture that looks like it has been here since thebuilding was constructed, but best of all the walls of aroom adjoining the great hall are completely covered withtapestries. The beautiful building and gorgeous gardens of the

Bishops Palace are now available for hire as a weddingvenue, and makes a special day all the more amazing.

Regal Cinema, EveshamWhat a delight it is to walk through the doors of

Evesham's newly reopened Regal Cinema, and intoanother world. It's the 1920's where art deco is all therage, and freshly painted. But its also the year 2012where there are pre-show drinks in the bar downstairs, post show drinks in the one on the balcony upstairs, andanother bar downstairs in the stalls with drinks servedto your table. Popcorn can be bought from the boxoffice, and tickets collected because they are all prepaid. We had booked the week before because it is so busy atthe moment you can't just turn up on speck and madeour way upstairs to take our seats ready for the film. Thebuilding has remained intact as a one screen cinema, with the stalls down stairs converted to a bar area, complete with large plush arm chairs that pivot towardstables or towards the screen and sofas upstairs which wewere curious following an open day at the end of lastyear, when there had been no seats, no floor, and nopaintwork, only scaffolding and dreams.

The sofas are large and comfortable for couples, andthere is so much leg room you can lounge in the sofawhile a whole family walks past in front and not have tomove for them. The volunteers showing us to our seatswere incredibly enthusiastic, and ranged in age (at aguess) from 5 to 75, and all the other guests seemedequally enthralled by the revitalised cinema, so it wasa lovely friendly atmosphere in this beautifully decoratedgem. Its well worth the wait for seats and the drive toEvesham for such an experience, and it really was the bestway to watch "The Artist" in its full glory, a terrific silentmovie about the end of the silent movie, based aroundthe same era as this cinema was first built.Thank you to all the volunteers working hard to

renovate and operate this cinema, it is an absolute joy tovisit. And if you are tempted, don't forget to book ticketsin advance on: 01386 421007

Babble's music explores the spaces in between; theypause, reflect, laugh, yearn rage and return to share anenriched vision; open eyed; open mouthed, embracing arenewed and vibrant attitude to life. Babble are ashapeshifting group of rotating and moveable musiciansput together by Rob Williams on guitars and synthesizersand Karen Langley on vocals. "Music is the conversation, the one we can have at a universal level - everyone canjoin in " says Karen The band have just scored a worldwide promotion and

distribution deal with Florida based label 'Musik and Film'and release their new album 'Shape of the flux' on 'out ofthe box' records. 'Shape of the flux' takes you upwardsand sideways with rhythms and soundscapes, wild guitarsand poetic lyrics. Babble, impress with ethereal vocaldisplays, haunting guitar and luscious synths, twistingaround an array of tribal beats and electronic percussion.Babble's intentions for the album are based aroundsearching for the divine and their pysched-out spaceysoundscapes certainly take you towards that goal. Local support came from Richard Clarke, who has beenpumping his new album ‘Hidden In Between The Trees’ allabout town. A nice little opener to an evening of folkydelight.Cheltenham based, Andy Oliveri was up next with

backing from members of the headline band ‘boat to row’on guitar and banjo. His recent release ‘Sing Mercy’ iscausing a bit of a stir to say the least. His gorgeous RyanAdam’s-esque tone and americana stylings were on fineform tonight and he really struck the right chord with thecrowd. Oliveri and Boat to Row are both artists onCheltenham based label ‘I started the fire’ who’s rosterincludes the magnificent Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun. Birmingham based ‘Boat to Row’ have been really

pulling out the stops this year. Their blend of pop and folkhas started to make an impression round the festivals andacross the midlands. Having previously played with thelikes of Noah & The Whale and Johnny Flynn, theirdistinctive British sound is a folk force to be reckonedwith. Boat to Row are a true virtuoso multi-instrumentalist group with a strong songwritingbackbone. Throughout their lively folky set, we sawglimpses of french horn, fiddle, banjo, piano, mandolin, not to mention a splendid array of acoustic, bass anddrums! They play with a professional maturity that is rarein such young musicians and make it all look far too easy!It was a pleasure to have such talented souls performingat The Hand In Glove, which has established itself as anintersting place for small acoustic gigs and a great spotfor classy booze! - JD

WITH ANDY O’HAREWhatever it takes? At the time of writing this, Bewdley's Becky Hill has

reached the semi-finals of The Voice on the Beeb andMalvern's Sam Eden is 'through' to the Final of the Live &Unsigned competition - my view is that they both deservecongratulations for their efforts so far (whatever happensin the next few weeks) - but opinion is pretty harshlydivided as to whether these sort of events are a 'good orbad thing'.

Let's be fair - pop androck music is prettypoorly served onmainstream TV at themoment - there's someretro flashbacks for theoldies on BBC4 - but ofcourse just about themainstay and onlyplatform is Later WithJools Holland on BBC2 -live on Tuesdays, with an

extended recorded edition on Friday nights - but it seemsI'm not the only one who thinks that Later is becomingthe Last Of The Summer Wine of rock shows - Luke Lewisin the NME recently wrote:"...You always know what you're going to get. Cult icon

on the comeback trail? Check. Token indie band? Check. Random gamelan-playing troupe who let's be

honest no-one has heard of, or will ever hear of again? Allpresent and correct - same time next week? And let's noteven start on the choogly-woogly jam sessions. Oh, Lord, those jam sessions..."And the obligatory new-CD promoting interview? We've

learned ourselves the hard way that the main problemwith live interviews isn't the risk of swearing - it's justthat they're mostly so damn boring - and Jools' one-way'chat' with a catatonic Damon Albarn a couple of weeksago hit a new low - probably time to cut this bitcompletely?Got to admit that I'd always thought the 'token indie

band' came through via the BBC Introducing and itspredecessors - apparently not - it's the pick of the show'sown producers. There's usually a vacancy for an acousticor semi-acoustic act - but once again the choice of theseseems mostly baffling... But there's no doubt thatclinching one of these 'spots' is still probably the bestopportunity for an unknown act to 'break' on national TV- none more so than KT Tunstall's debut in 2004 whichsaw her achieve superstardom on the basis of herperformance of 'Black Horse & The Cherry Tree'... Since January there's been a placement each week on

mainstream TV courtesy of the BBC Intro scheme - if youcan call the closing slot on the Friday night BBC2'sReview Show 'prime-time' - well it's a start ... but it's

pretty obvious that things are reallydesperate for wannabe acts - it's avery long shot whether you'll get picked forLater - and anything bigger or louder than an acousticsolo or duo act can forget about the Review Show aswell. So can you blame people like Becky or Sam for taking

their chances elsewhere? If either of them actually wintheir contest - will it somehow make it all right? As faras I can see The Voice has now degenerated into a bog-standard TV talent contest - at least the 'blind' auditionsat the start of the series seemed to be a genuineexamination of vocal talent - and for me the proof ofthat is Becky Hill being an instant pick by the tworemaining judges. If they now just let her concentrate onthose astounding vocals from now on - and forget aboutthe stair-climbing routines that have left her knackeredthe last couple of times, she could be in with a shout ofthe prize of a record deal with Universal - but no doubtthat she's already made her mark - though not alwaysperhaps the way she was hoping for... Then what about Sam's appearance at L&U in July?

From what I can gather (and information ain't easy tocome by) there'll be about 20 contestants at this 'final' -but there is still a place available for one of the 50-or-so acts who fell at the last hurdle - provided they canget enough text votes (at a quid a pop) they can fill a'wild-card' spot with a shot at the £10,000 prize...

And forme that's thedifference -contests likeL&U appearto be totallyfocussed onraking in themoney - andthere's nodoubt thatacts who cangenerate theextra cashand publicity(eg via then o t o r i o u s' e x p o s u r eawards') are

going to have an advantage - and there's so many half-truths and misleading references (the judges forexample) in their carefully-worded but limited publicity- so maybe it's the lesser of two sadly necessary evils, but give me The Voice every time - but of course I wouldsay that wouldn't I...

REVIEWThe Demon Barberssupported by Fairfield One VoiceThe first of what I hope will be more Bromsgrove Folk

Club sponsored productions at Artrix and a goodevening it was. Continuing the sound, communityapproach of putting a local band on with theHeadliners, Fairfield One Voice were first up. In truth Iwasn’t encouraged when 3 blokes wandered onto thestage as if they had got a bit lost looking for the bar,and the first song was a bit “sunday school” However itpicked up with the support of the violin and genuinelygood songs – Unblessed Hand and Old Man Overseaswere delivered with real feeling and, in the later casereal humour. You can catch these at the BromsgroveFolk Festival (July 13th – 15th) and I would certainlyrecommend it. Despite a dodgy start and unnecessaryself-depreciation throughout, they were good value. The Demon Barbers were excellent. With an audience

that seemed to me to be split 50/50 hardened “folkies”and people who were just curious, they appealed toboth. Indeed this was a fantastic introduction to folkwith a set that had clog dancing , morris dancing, sing-along’s, traditional folk songs and a cover of a GratefulDead song! Particular favourites of mine were CaptainWard, 3 Drunken Maidens and a stick dance whichinvolved 5 of the men holding sticks in a circle and then

weaving between each other in such a way that they nevergot tangled but at the end the sticks held together. I knowthat sounds crap but it was baffling and brilliant.Mike Harding from Radio 2 said that: The Demon Barbers

are one of the best live bands I've ever seen. If you get achance to see them - don't miss it - they are brilliant. He is right. There was none of the arrogance you can

sometimes get from bands who are good in a particularniche, but I felt a real desire to introduce people to thebroad church that is folk music, even those things, likemorris dancing, that can sometimes raise a sneer. The only minor criticism I had was that there was too

much rambling in between songs - perhaps that mightwork in a small sweaty folk club but not in a bigger venue. However this was a successful evening at Artrix and I hopeBromsgrove Folk Club are encouraged and repeat it.

REVIEW

Your chance to win £750How would you like to win £750 in cash? Well, the

Worcester Festival is offering you the chance to do just thatwith the Worcester Street Theatre Competition that isbeing launched in this year’s Festival in August. The competition is being run by Worcester Festival and is

open to any amateur groups or individuals who wish totake part. Performances must be staged at designatedvenues in front of live audiences on the streets ofWorcester and can include music, drama, comedy, circusskills and general performance. Chris Jaeger (FestivalDirector) is thrilled at the idea of seeing more performanceon the streets of Worcester. “Street Theatre is one of the oldest forms of performing

arts and cities and towns that embrace the art form benefitfrom improved visitor experiences and higher numbers oftourists. We want to support new and emerging talent andstreet theatre is a great way to do that”

BAD AMBER AND HOT FUSS18TH MAY 2012 RAILWAY, EVESHAMHot Fuss are a brand new tribute band from

Worcestershire, and if you can’t guess from the band namethey cover tracks originally by The Killers. They had beenpractising as a four piece until the singer joined a monthbefore this debut gig. Considering thesinger had only been with the band forthat short time he seemed at ease athitting the higher notes!I was impressed with these, although

covers bands aren’t usually my thing. Twowines later I was with the rest of thecrowd singing my head off to epic hits likeMr Brightside and Smile Like You Mean It.The drummer of this band, Chris Harvey

of Tower Studios in Pershore had a toughtime at this gig as he had a 5 minute breakbefore he had to play his second set of theevening with Bad Amber, the headline actof the night. This was also a debut gig for the, Bad Amber. The band

is made up of Evie on vocals, Kim on guitar, Dan on bassand Chris on drums. This is a band I can’t really stigmatisewith a genre, they have influences from all over fromPrince to Four Non Blondes to Zepplin!

If you have ever been someone who’s thought “girlscan’t play guitar”, you seriously need to check this bandout because Kim will teach you a good shredding lessonor two. Impressively strong vocals to match thetechnical guitar and that’s just the girls in the band. Myonly critisism of the evening is that the PA systemwasn’t the best and this is usually a massive bug bear forme. The PA slightly annoyed Bad Amber, but their bandethos shone through – THIS IS ROCK N ROLL!If anyone read SLAP issue 11 you may remember an

article about an awesome local drummer, JustineMiskimmin, who sadly passed away inOctober 2011. This was Bad Amber’soriginal drummer, and the loss is evidentin some of the original songs the bandhave written, especially ones thatJustine had co written. The Miskimmincrew were there in full support of theband and songs that Justine loved somuch. They ended the set with a song close

to my heart, “Runaway”. This tune ismelodic but hits you with anunexpected heaviness for the chorus, which may give you a glimpse into BadAmber’s life as a band to date.

This band need to be on every local festival line up thisyear! Please keep checking the SLAP mag gig guide forupcoming gigs from Bad Amber, if I haven’t told youfirst!

Many high-profile artists have started ‘on the streets’.Comedian Eddie Izzard, musician Bill Bailey andmagicians Penn and Teller all carved out the earlystages of their careers from street performance.Street performer, actor, director and Worcester

Festival Committee Member, Ben Humphrey will be oneof the judges of the competition and thinks theprospect of more street theatre in Worcester is brilliant. “Street Theatre is one of the hardest forms of

performance. Your audience can just walk off at anypoint and they will if they don’t like what they see. Atleast in a theatre the audience has bought in to whatyou’re offering. On the street… if they don’t like what’son offer they just move on.”So what’s the draw for entering the competition? As

well as the chance to win £750, you may also belooking at a professional booking with next year’sfestival which is great exposure for any performerslooking to make their name. Rules and application forms can be found online at

The Morgan does a lot to support local music inMalvern especially with the superb Wednesday nightOpen Mic nights run by Tyler Massey and Vo Fletcher. They also when they can have music at the weekends soit was with great interest that I popped along to seeJourneyman who were playing on the Saturday eveningat the end of April. For those who have not seen them yetthey are Andy Lindsay (guitar, vocals, mandolin, whistle),Sue Bell (vocals, fiddle), Paul Beadle (guitar, vocals, flute, tambourine, bodhran) Paul Boyce (bass guitar). They describe their music as folk and acoustic pop

with celtic/irish influences. At the moment they onlyhave one of their own songs that they played, this waswritten by Andy and is called “This World Ain’t Free” awonderful track and with this calibre of writing I hopethat they get busy writing more material. They began theevening with a selection of covers that they do extremelywell bringing their own influences into each songmaking it both a delight to listen to but also to watch.

“Sympathy for the Devil” went down extremely well asdid “Brown Eyed Girl” which Sue sang brilliantly. Theaudience at the Morgan were soon fully behind the band,we had foot tapping, table drumming and dancing tosongs such as “Copperhead Road” a great Steve Earleclassic and a superb cover of The Band's “The Weight”they brought a raw edge to the sound which I reallyliked. For me the highlight of the evening was when theyplayed Christy Moore's “Ride On” a track I love and yesthey did this extremely well with Paul Beadle really athis finest. The whole evening was a great one, it was full of

vibrancy and energy not only from Journeyman but theaudience who judging by the applause and feedbackthoroughly enjoyed the night.

Comedy Zonewith Adam MontgomeryA Great Time of Year for ComedyEvery August the city of Edinburgh hosts what is

without a doubt the greatest arts festival on earth. My first visit to Edinburgh was in 1989 when along

with a friend we spent a few days at the festival, takingin as much culture as we could during the day anddrinking as much as we could during the night (it cameas a great shock to us on the first night when we foundourselves still drinking in a bar at 5am due to the ratherlax but extremely welcome Scottish drinking laws). I wasto return to the festival some twelve years later as aperformer but on this first occasion that was not even adream and I had gone up to see my brother perform ina play. But the event that changed my life there waswholly unexpected. After a rough night’s sleep in thecar (we were young), I stumbled across an eccentricstreet performer in the city centre, performing what Ican only describe as a bizarre and surreal, seeminglyimprovised comedy routine, the details of which remainhazy but if I recall correctly, it involved tea cosies. Ithought it was hilarious so I bothered to find out theperformer’s name – it was Eddie Izzard. (Eddie’s careerstarted in Covent Garden with a unicycle) I saw Eddie Izzard

in many comedyclubs over the nextfew years in andaround Londonwhere I lived at thetime. I even onceshared his birthdaycake with him as hecompered a smallclub in Kingston to ahandful of committed audience members. I developed alove of live stand up and the rest as they say is history– some years later I started my own comedy clubs, firstin Stratford-upon-Avon, then in Worcester, theneventually I started performing myself, and now I havereached the zenith of my career, writing for Slapmagazine! So what can we learn from this serendipitous

encounter? Well, a few things:The Edinburgh festival is simply a must at some point

in your life. You can watch ten shows a day (theatre, comedy, live bands etc) and then drink into the earlyhours and all in one of the most dramatic cities in theworld. I’d urge you to visit.Secondly, all stand ups (and indeed all successful

people) start somewhere. So next time you walk past astreet performer, barely giving them a second glance, perhaps pause for a moment and give them a few

minutes of yourprecious time. Younever know who theymight turn out to be!All those stadium –selling comedians ofthe moment trawledthe country for years, performing to oftentiny audiences inbars and clubs.People often say tome “You never toldme that MichaelMcIntyre played atyour club” – I usuallyinform them that Idid tell them, they just didn’t know who he was at thetime! Now it may be that you can’t get to Edinburgh this

year. Well never fear because The Comedy Zone isbringing a bit of the Edinburgh festival to Worcesterthis July. In order to prepare for the festival, comedians“preview” their shows around the country in a bid topolish their new material. On 5th July The Marrs Barwill host two brand new one hour Edinburgh 2012shows from comedians Rob Deering and Abandoman. Both musical acts, Abandoman puts on a stunningdisplay of improvised rapping and hip-hop, based onaudience suggestions, and Rob Deering, famed for hismusical talents presents his new ambitious show – TheOne – in which, with the help of numerous gadgets, effects pedals, a huge musical talent and a loopingmachine, healone willbecome afull one manrock band! The next

C o m e d yZone show isat the MarrsBar on 7thJune andfeatures the extraordinary talents of Tom Binns, appearing as both the slightly sick Hospital DJ IvanBrackenbury and the remarkable spirit medium Ian DMontford. As if this wasn’t enough, the delightfullywhimsical Addy Van Der Borgh is also appearing. Theshow is hosted as ever by resident compere AdamMontgomery, who would like to assure regulars that healready has two new jokes this month.

Adam is a stand up comedian and promoter whohas been working in the comedy industry since1996 when he put on his first show featuring (bycomplete fluke) the then unknown Ross Noble. Heis resident compere at The Comedy Zone.

Worcester Rock City has got nothing short of a stellarline-up this month with two (yes two!!!) HUGE showsround the corner. First up, we are thrilled to announceWelsh rockers REVOKER are set to storm the stage as theheadline act for Friday 29th June 2012 at the VelvetLounge in Angel Place, Worcester. After being signed to Roadrunner Records in May 2011,

the band released their debut album ‘Revenge For TheRuthless’, a nod to heavy metal's past, while fuelling theflame of its future.Having shared the stage with heavy metal royalty (OZZY

OSBOURNE, LAMB OF GOD and ANTHRAX to name afew), these seasoned metallers are quickly taking the musicworld by storm, and believe us, they are just getting started. This head-banging juggernaut of a night will be rounded

up with support from local metal heroes FURY, Malvern'srock phenomenon BLACK RUSSIAN and Birmingham'svery own ACELDAMA. Doors open at 8pm, with the firstband on stage at 9pm.Tickets cost £5.00 and are available online now from

www.worcester-rock-city.co.uk. As if we donít spoil youenough, our next door neighbours at MODE are offeringall ticket holders to this gig 20% off food on the day ofthe gig as a little incentive to entice you in for some pre-show grub. We were invited down last week to try outtheir homemade burgers and they are (in our opinion) thebest in Worcester, and we don’t make sweeping statementslike that lightly (even with the discount we had) - we takeour burgers almost as seriously as our live music. The 2nd BIG GIG is a Jubilee Bank Holiday Monday (4th

June) special event. We are making the most of that extraday off work by teaming up with Velvet’s club night ‘State

Of Indiependence’ to bring you what we is being billed as a‘battle between two of the biggest alternative music nightsin Worcester’ INDIEPENDENCE VS ROCK CITY. It will be a blendof live bands and Velvet’s trademark club night entertainmentwith a few very special treats exclusive to this event. We don’twant to give too much away...The 6 band ALL-STAR line-up will consist of NOMAD 67,

MANSIZE, EVOLUTION OF MAN, RONIN, FUSTERCLUK(formerly New Chapter) and introducing ELECTRIC REMEDY.The night will open its doors at 9:30pm, live music will kick offaround 10pm and it will only cost you a ridiculouslyreasonable £3.00 on the door to attend AND we have sortedit so the next day is a bank holiday too so you can stay out aslate as you want!!!Please visit www.worcester-rock-city.co.uk for further

REVIEWby Richard AustenThe recent renaissance in

the music scene in Malvernwas covered in the festiveedition of SLAP, but perhapsless well-known but equallyexciting is the rise ofperformance poetry alongsideit. At the core of this isVersatile Arts Smoke andMirrors gigs, which have beenentertaining audiences at theMalvern Youth Centre andbeyond since 2009.Amidst an incredible array

of local talent, Smoke andMirrors have also managed toattract such nationallynotable poets as Attila theStockbroker, John CooperClarke and Ian McMillan.Hosted by the inimitable duoof Dee Davidson and Caitlin Belgard who combinespontaneity, humour and incredible warmth, the shows, regardless of scale, have a great intimacy. Theirtrademark standard lamp on stage imparts the feelingthat Dee and Caitlin have invited you into their frontroom for a bit of a chat and yet we have witnessed someenormous performances from musicians and poets alike. It is fitting therefore that Versatile Arts have chosen an

image of the standard lamp to adorn their book andaccompanying CD which has been compiled to celebratethe success of the gigs to date. Both the book and theCD are a fitting tribute to the nerves, hard work and gritof the musicians and poets, who range from seasonedperformers to those who have formerly kept their talentsunder wraps, but who have been encouraged into thelime light by the friendly atmosphere at the shows. In what seems quite a coup, Versatile Arts have

secured contributions to the book from all three of theirbig-name acts to go alongside the range of local talent. The material ranges from raging anti-establishment toheartfelt emotion, with a heavy dose of humour thrownin and ensures that the wide variety covered at theshows is well-represented. Each poet has the chance toshare a little about themselves and one or two poems toshowcase their talents. With over 20 poets contributing, there isn’t the space here to go into highlights (of whichthere are many), suffice to say that there is somethingfor everyone here. The accompanying CD, which features performances

largely recorded specifically for the book, offers somemusical numbers and an opportunity for the poets tostamp their personalities on the written word and really

brings to life the poetry on the page; after all, this is‘performance’ poetry and the poets do not simply read,

they add a level of shade and nuancewhich can’t always be discerned fromseeing their words in print. Added intothe mix are some musical numbers too, again reflecting the nature of the liveshows. The closing page of the bookfeatures the heading: ‘your poemhere.’ And this really is the messagehere: everyone can have a go, andSmoke and Mirrors provide aplatform for you to share yourwork with a sympathetic audienceand without the pub chatter thanmeans that poetry is a rare eventat a typical open-mic session. So,I’ve done it. I’ve written a poem.Perhaps I’ll even perform it. Butit’s all down to the inspirationalwork in evidence here. Buy thebook and see what I mean. Andsee you at the next Smoke andMirrors gig.

Smoke and Mirrors is available to buy in Malvernfrom: Aspect Design Newtown Road, Greenlink healthfood shop and Lyttelton House Gallery. It’s also availableto borrow from County Libraries.

Richard Clarke and the Rafters have crafted, adelicate and at times blissful piece of work that eventhe most grumpy of grumps would be hard pushed notto enjoy, even though they probably wouldn’t admit it.Simple harmonies mask intricate melodies that

captivate you and leave you feeling almost cleansed.Listening to this album is like having a bit of a sit downwith a cup of tea… at times there is even a biscuitthrown in. It doesn’t reachthe dizzying heights of achocolate hobnob but it’snot as plain and boring of arich tea either. The album takes you to a

good place, somewherebetter for a while at least, like a film soundtrack toones own story. Opener ‘ThePlains’ draws you inbetween the trees whereyou can hang around for awhile and listen to rest ofthe album. ‘Where I Reside’

On the same day as town has been packed withmarauding hoards of flag waving patriots, I waded myway to the Crown on Bransford Road St. Johns, a placethat has in recent months became renowned for off thewall nights. This one was no exception with two uniquegroups – the avant garde noise/blast beat duo Americansfrom Liverpool/Worcester and Belgian cellist MrMarcaille.. Don't worry though, it wasn't a Brahmsconcerto. Mr Marcaille drew devoted metal heads from asfar as pershore and Malvern, for reasons that will becomeclear indeed. Both acts were sandwiched between the kitchen sink

DJ mashups of Ed 'Wheels Of” Steelefox that would makeMr Scruff glow with pride. Ed is a multi talentedphilanthropist loved by all.. nuff said.So first up are Americans – comprising of Jonathan

Matthew David Cording {also known as Trippy toWorcester folk member of variously; metalers HorseBastard, the experimental Hammerfist, Dick LimerickAcademy and Stig amongst others,} and Jake, also of Stigand founder of Don't Drop the Dumbbells social space &the Post Music label based in Liverpool .The set up is interesting – just a single tiny charity shop

keyboard, a mixer, a few delay pedals, circuit bent CBradio and a simple midget drum kit. This whole rig ischaotic {and prone to episodes of resonant feedback.}as everything then goes through a looper. All improvisedcompletely on the spot so you never know what yourgoing to get. Two songs in and they somehow manage tosound like a wiry chorus of chirping burglar alarms thatrises in an ear piercing pitch. This then evolves intointermittent blast beats, someone jokes they should playdub step, they have a bloody good go at it! Then there'ssurprises aplenty with time stretched samples magicallyappearing to the fore, Perhaps not intentionally, Jaketakes a step back from over powering the mix and we endup with an intelligent bout of cut and paste brutal beats, borderline drum and bass in places, whilst seamlesslymerged between eirey warbling soundscapes and itchyglitchy pops. However, there is no beard stroking here, just two guys having fun creating chaos! The audienceseem to be on the same bent wavelength. Not exactly easy to put into words tho, so check out

there music here - http://amer1cans.bandcamp.com/album/americans-2So if that wasn't enough Mr Marcaille finally takes the

stage! The idea of a one man band is taken to the extremeas this chap uses just a cello, TWO kick drums and beltsout vocals at exactly the same time! His chosen genre –punk/metal. It may sound like a gimmick to some perhaps, but the cello is so diverse with a little wah wah it

becomes a lead guitar, with afew filter sweeps it feels like yourlistening to a psychedelic classicswamped with backwards production. He saws awaythroughout, galloping with a relentless dual pummellingbeat. The dynamics and control are commendable, addingfuzz from time to time he nails sixths. Mr Marcaille is anhumorous and humble chap in-spite of his formidableappearance of a topless giant gripping an axe. At one pointhe asks “Do you know a wall of death?” resulting in a slightuproar before softly adding “This is dedicated to a dearfriend of mine..” Humorously Americans – both John andJake - have to literally sit against each kick drum to holdthem in place, such is the force of Marcaille's rhythm, theyare literally supporting this man to the end!He rounds off his set with a song in dedication to his

uncle, Andre The Giant, I don't know if this is true but thisis possibly the sludgiest with out right metal stabs!Sounding deliciously dark and twisted emanating from theknotted bowels of a cello! His sound takes a littleadjustment, it's by no means immediate but the assembledmetal mad audience were appreciative and in awe of thisman's craft.

REVIEW LAKEFEST 18th & 19th May

I wasn't sure what to expect from a festival, in it's firstyear, so near to home. Expanded from the annual ciderfestival, this years event was for the first time billed as a fullblown music festival.Although sceptical I remained hopeful and on my arrival

was more than pleasantly surprised. A decent sized andspacious camping area, a well set up 'main arena', lightdrizzle, wellies, forgotten tent pegs, copious amounts ofalcohol and grown men dressed only in nappies. Yep... I wasat a bone fide music festival.So... the music (or what I can remember of it thanks to

the bring your own booze as long as it's discreet policy).Unbelievable EMF played with all the vibrancy of theirformer drug fuelled halcyon day highs although thankfullythe mother fucking was left at the gate. They played theirdebut Schubert Dip album, released 21 years earlier, in itsentirety.

Avert Francis played a delightful acoustic set. He wasunfortunate to begin his set to only a handful of audiencemembers although, testament to the quality of his songs, ended his set to a packed tent. We were hoping to catchup properly with this local lad who has a good few festivalsand performances to get though this year, so Slap will nodoubt be featuring him soon.London based Smoke

Feathers were brilliant asalways and really capturedthe vibe of Lakefest. Wellcrafted songs with a JeffBuckley-esq feel can do nowrong. The one and only (thank

god) Chesney Hawkes kickstarted the party onSaturday, while somecomplained at the numberof covers he played, I was

personally thankful that we were only subjected to twoof his own songs. It may have been the Carling (otherlargers are available) but I actually really enjoyed hisset... weird.Another pleasant

surprise to the weekendwere Missing Andy. This Essex based Modinfluenced band have itall. Frontman AlexGreaves can go fromspoken word (MikeSkinner stylee) to Suggs(Madness - for youyoung ‘uns) to bring avaried but somehowdistinctive sound. Theirstage craft honedthanks no doubt to TVtalent show success toa fine art.Highlight of the weekend, for me anyway, was The

Roving Crows. A band that get better and better everytime I see them, not particularly my favourite genre buttheir music is all about having a good time, whichincidentally perfectly summed up Lakefest (againprobably something to do with the beer), and whodoesn't like to do that?

Their were other bands of course... Miles & Erica wereWonderful Stuff, we put are hands on Reef, we prayedfor summer with Dodgy, danced in the moonlight toToploader and Athlete... well we didn't see them, shame.

A superb first attempt at a music festival. See younext year.

In early 2010 this inventive Kidderminsterfour piece arose from the glowing embers ofacclaimed West Mids prog rock (not a dirtyterm in this household) combo Dead LetterOffice.Rubicava was conceived as an outlet for main

songwriter Benjamin Hiorns' more melodic rock leaningsand together with cohort Jevon Davies were to beaccompanied by a shifting roster of sympatheticmusicians.

However they soon settled with the fixed line-up of KyleGayne on bass plus drummer Karen Jones and so herethey are in all their splendour. It must be said that there is variety-a-plenty on this

album and from a (lazy) reviewer's point of view Rubicavaare hard to pin down and categorise. This is at once botha good & bad thing ie listeners are kept on their toes(wonderful mixed metaphor! Ed) plus interest levelsremain high, but this may be to the detriment of a strongidentity which could dilute the potential audience. So we have the energetic, bouncy opener

"Wastemaker": with it's big production values I hearshades of stadium friendly U2isms in the form of Edgelishguitar and the right side of histrionic (just) Bonesque vox. It's an auspicious start and compliments this earlysummer sunshine nicely.Next up "Crash" continues the album's strong melodic

theme with a lovely strings ending: my mate mentionsLloyd Cole but I can't see it myself. Then 3rd track "Table For One' slows it down in time-

honoured fashion, which gives breathing space to the

REVIEW RUBICAVA - GET WELL SOONband's (multiple) personality. The intriguing vocals shinethrough as does the lead guitarist's extensive range ofsounds: I hear the ghost of Muse creeping in.Looking at my notes the keywords are inventiveness,

variety and tuneful and throughout Get Well Soon you canhear a helluvalotta thought gone into the arrangements, instrumentation and voices. This is especially evident onstandouts such as "Comatose and Happy" and "Call MeWhen You're Lonely".There's a nicely understated but perhaps underused

keyboard presence on the album; mainly piano butoccasional ear-pricking touches of synth and onedramatic, long church organ chord. But it's these auralsurprises which keep the listener engaged.Get Well Soon finishes with the elegiac, stately and

panoramic "Leaving Last Vegas", which again shows thebreadth of Rubicava's imagination. It's a melding ofArcade Fire with Darkness era Boss and Tim Booth onvocals. These are all good things and thus ends thisconsistently interesting album in strong vein. This album, released on May 12, is well worth your time

so visit www.rubicava.com to find out how to get yer mittson a copy.

On Saturday the 28th April, something both brand newand well established was going down in Worcester!! Theunderground outfit Not For Squares, returned to theinfamous Art House Cafe, I wanted a piece of that action. With a Line-up to write home about and an already largelegion of fans, I knew it was going to be somethingspecial. I was already excited about this party, partly

because of it being at the Art House and this has to be oneof my favourite venues in Worcester. It has in my opinion, always delivered when it comes to the Not For Squaresparties in terms of door policy and sound, but moreimportantly, because I wanted to see first hand after morethan a year away from the space, exactly what it was NotFor Squares had to offer. They certainly did not disappoint!I arrived just after 1am, with the party already in full

swing and had been for the last two hours. The venue wasfilled with Worcester's faithful all partying hard, what a

perfect way to start the night. The Funktion One soundsystem was emitting delicious deep and jazzyunderground house, that was interspersed withmoments of Dirty Disco. There were enough peoplethrowing shapes on the dance floor for me to be certainthat this was going to be a night to remember!!A little murmur or buzz started to fill the place when

international guest DJ Mark Jenkyns’s took to the decks, things definitely went up a few notches. The place reallycame alive and everyone wanted more from thistalented DJ Producer, who was just back from a gig inPeru at rebel rave! So Worcester was very lucky to havehim in attendance! The crowd were friendly, good looking and certainly

up for more of the same. Loved the residents as well, they really did understand the faithful by providingjust what they wanted!! Something fresh, new andunderground!! Loved it!!I eventually headed outside to the terrace, to wind

down and chill, I tell you this place will be the amazingin the summer!! Such a beautiful venue, great soundsystem, lighting and fabulous visuals..All in all a very special night, excellent production and

perfect music from all who played!! One last thing, the whole night was promoted in order

to raise money for the MSRC!! good to see Worcestergetting involved and digging deep.Thank you NFS and i will see you on the dance floor soon!!

It may have been a while since Citizen Fish graced astage in the land of carpets and all things Kidderminster, but tonight they're here to show us that the politicaldriven punk of 'the fish' is as ever prevalent as it wasback in the early 90s.Skip forward to 2012 and its the first time back for the

'fish' since the market tavern days. This time roundthough, me and a pub full of people are at The BoarsHead, waiting to witness some 'fish' madness. Still writingrelevant lyrics about a generation of HD rioters andmental liberation. All rooted in their punk and ska drivenstyle. With Matt on trombone, Alex-trumpet, Jasper-bass,Phil-guitar, Silas-drums and Dick who looks and sings likethe ultimate punk you've got Citizen Fish.

First up tonight we welcome backWorcester band Calm Like A Riot, who played here back in Febuary, getting the night started with theirunique style of hip hop and massesof energy.Expecting this to be a late one I’m

suprised when 'the fish' take to the

stage early. Kicking off the night with songs 'Working OnThe Inside', 'Social insecurity' and some newer songs fromtheir recently released album 'Goods'. Front man Dickjolts and jumps about on stage to 'Free Speech'. With theband gradually easing us into a national anthem-esquebeginning, then resuming normal mayhem levels, announcing "Lets have some mental liberation, until wedo then no one’s really free".There's nothing aggressive about Citizen Fish, their

songs may touch on strong social statements but its allabout positive change and helping each other out. Frontman Dick Lucas says before he belts out newly writtensong 'Can’t Go On For Ever'. 'We wrote this 2 weeks agoand its about people getting together and sorting outtheir problems'. Im all for that statement! So it seems area crowd of people who look like they've enjoyedthemselves and why not, if all the right ingredients areset against some jerky dancable ska? Finishing offtonight with 'Marker Pen' and my favourites of the night'Wake Up' and 'Habit', 'The Fish' leave showing that thereis method to the fish madness, what a great gig.

Following on from our triumphant milestoneat the end of April which saw our site finallybeing re-launched with a new look and our newonline shop open - we've continued to work justas hard throughout May traveling afar to coverseveral live shows of which we will give you moreinfo on throughout this article. But firstly wewelcome two new businesses' where you pick upyour copy of Slap Mag.In Hereford notable points to pick your magazine up

Themagazine will be at hand at TGS bowling once it reopens. And of course in Ross-On-Wye at The Ross GazetteOffices in Broad Street, Rossiter Books, The Eagle Inn andnow at the new music store Ross Music Box.As more have grown to the site and as we've religiously

kept you updated, we've received some fantastic feedbackregarding the new look site and even more so on the newonline shop. We've had a steady supply of orders duringthe first month and we have found ourselves already lowon certain items. The online shop- which you can find atwww.circuitsweet.co.uk under it's own tab- is our nextstep to promote, introduce and provide talent to more. Ahome for hardworking musicians' efforts. Here we haveHereford/Bristol based duo Aulos' last ever handful oftheir EP 'EP IC'. We are down to a such a small amountthat we urge you to get yours now if you want to own acopy. They will not be reprinted. Also in the shop we have

Well Weapons' Dios trio debut. Dios Trioprovide melodic math rock, mixing franticguitar work with a pop sensibility and anice twist of midwestern emo. Definitelyup your street is you are a fan of Ghostsand Vodka, Tera Melos or Fang Island.

And if you like theirdebut you will

love Olde Pine's cassette tape we also have in stock. Weare also the only UK stockists of The Jezebel Spirits'record 'Remember... Always Obey You Will Live LongerThat Way'. Each copy is painstakingly hand crafted alongwith some very special clothing we also have available.Every copy is unique and has a slightly different feature.A future collectable we're sure. And again if you like thatyou will love Bearcubbin' which is The SmashingPumpkins' drummer Mike Byrne's math rock band. Sobe sure to keep checking the shop as we plan to add lotsmore to it on a regular basis. As previously mentioned May was a busy month for

covering gigs nationwide. These include The Cast ofCheers and Blood Red Shoes. In the past few editionsyou may have noticed over the past few months we'vebeen following Dublin based quartet The Cast of Cheerswhilst they've been touring ahead of their album release. We've also recently unveiled an exclusive live interviewwith the four backstage at one of their gigs. On the firstday of May we returned to Bristol to catch up with TheCast of Cheers who at that time were engrossed in theirtour traveling nationwide as support for Blood RedShoes. The Trinity Centre opened its doors to bothaccomplished acts for a night that united all live-musiclovers and all fans of the musicians. As the only supportof the night The Cast of Cheers quickly took to the stageas the venue filled out. Due to Blood Red Shoes’ vastamount of supporting fans the crowd size was on amuch larger scale to the quartet’s previous Bristolperformance. As well as that playing on a much largerPA system to a room with its own unique acoustics andto play a venue with a crowd capacity teeming. It was aprivilege to hear and witness The Cast of Cheers performon more of a capacious proportion. From the first noteplayed – Conor, Neil, John and Kevin instantly mesmerizetheir audience. Each musicians’ powerful energy isdisplayed on stage and the entire band thrive from oneanother and provide a compelling and thoroughlyenjoyable set.Their set list revamped from the last Bristol visit

amalgamating older material from their debut ‘Chariot’and tracks from their forthcoming album including theirlatest single release ‘Animals’. The new material fromthe band taken from the forthcoming album release, prove a more mature and more experimental approachfrom the four. Together its noticeable that the bandhave become comfortable with their new ventures; withstronger track formations, deeper lyrics and more daringand tentative explorations within their orchestrations. This is a band with so much potential both live and in

their recorded endeavors. Maintaining their lively andrhythmic persona throughout their live performance.Their confidence within themselves, their unity as a bandand their passion for connecting their compositions tothe crowd makes each live performance more illustriousthan the last. The Cast of Cheers are a band that aregaining the right attention, their hard working effortsare paying off and to have a support band that rivals

the headline compliments such workmanship.Following on from them was of course the

headline act Blood Red Shoes. The dynamic duo are anunstoppable force. The notable faces that make up theoutfit found in Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansellcreatively on record and projected live are simplypowerful. From the start of their set opening with theeminent single ‘It’s Getting Boring By The Sea’ andcombining 8 Years of material into an hour and a half set-the band maintained that powerful intensity. Mixingmaterial from their debut ‘Box of Secrets’, their 2010follow up ‘Fire like This’ and their newest release the pairdelved into a variety of compositions displaying theircapabilities. Their set comprised of forceful chords, prevailing distortion and harmonious vocals from the pair.New tracks ‘Cold’ ‘In Time To Voices’ and ‘Lost Kids’ alldisplayed a more mature direction from the band.Comfortable with their aptitude and how they candevelop Blood Red Shoes more. Whereas the moredistinguished material such as ‘Doesn’t Matter Much’,‘Heartsink’, ‘Light It Up’, ‘I Wish I was Someone Better’ toname a few all oscillated in the musicians strength.Laura’s alluring vocals and gritty tone accompanied byStevens aggressive and forceful drum playing combinedwith his unique hardhitting melodic vocals provided anenergetic and gripping set.- There is a full review you canread alongside more gig photography of the event overat our website under reviews' or simply search Blood RedShoes.

Following that gig we were extremely lucky enough tobe able to see Alabama Shakes at their sold out night inBirmingham's HMV Institute. On Friday 11th May on thefirst leg of their May UK tour, Alabama based 4 piececonsisting of Brittany Howard- Lead vocals and guitar,Heath Fogg- guitar, Zac Cockrell- bass and StevenJohnson on drums; arrived at Birmingham's HMV institutejoined with their touring member Ben Tanner on keys toplay their opening headline show. Back in April the bandmade their first UK television debut on Later with JoolsHolland. A few weeks later the band are back in thecountry playing to a sold out show. Alabama Shakes'success- has in a short space of time- rightfully becomethat of legend. Originally formed in 2009, this act for awhile was one many had heard of through blogs, websites, word of mouth but desperately wished to seelive. Now selling out their shows worldwide this is an actwho WILL put all they have into their performances andcapture all with such severity, such passion that this unity

can easily provide one of the best and most memorableperformances you'll see. - A full review is streaming onthe site so head over there to find out why we believethis made act has the world at their feet.Amongst the gigs we had to cover the next featured

article on the website is that of the live review ofPolyvinyl Records' cherished Japandroids and CadenceWeapon at Clwb Ifor Bach.

The powerful Vancouver based band Japandroids are atwo piece garage rock band from Canada consisting ofGuitarist and vocalist Brian King and drummer andvocalist David Prowse. Intentionally a maximal band-with few numbers making up the act, together they makethe sound of a five man band. The duo are currentlytouring to promote their sophomore album 'CelebrationRock' the long awaited follow up to their criticallyacclaimed 2009 debut 'Post Nothing' on PolyvinylRecords. Beginning their fast paced frantic hour long set,

Japandroids- who nowadays are playing stadium shows-admitted to the crowd during their intimate performancethat this was the first floor show they've done in a longtime. And then stated " We're the type of band that onlyplays as well as the audience in front of us".With that inmind they really did give it their all as they weavedbetween older more notorious releases to the fresh newreleases from their forthcoming album. The hard workingpair bask in their kaleidoscopic array of confiningresonating warm feedback and wall of sound; theirglistening riffs, audacious deep beats and fills, captivating lyrics and aggressive punchy shouts show themusicians abilities and its easy to see the pair simplybounce from one another. As they provide a relentlessloud and daring set.- More photography and a full reviewcan be found on the site.June seems just as busy as the past few months as we

head out on tour with Aulos and Sargent House's TeraMelos. We are also hoping to bring you a very speciallive session at KJM studios which we are keeping closeto our chests for now. We are scheduled to cover a fewmore artists nationwide throughout the month but weare looking forward to attending some hometown livegigs which will be in the gig listings. Worcester duo – Chris Wemyss and Katy Birch release afull length album that chews you up and spits you outwith the raw and raucous sounding (and indeed titled)‘Eat Fuck Die’.Anyone switched on enough to already be on the Das

Sexy Clap bandwagon will undoubtedly already expectand album chock full of loud powerful scream rock. Theywon’t be disappointed as DSC have duly delivered withgusto.Familiar comparisons to the White Stripes may be

misguided, DSC sound is an altogether angrier, rawer, more grungy sound with elements of metal and punkthrown in for good measure. The majority of the trackson the albums eleven tracks clock in short of threeminutes, grabbing your attention by the balls and rippingthem clean off. It’s hard to pick out individual tracks from an album so

rich in quality but on ’12 Year Itch’ we find DSC arguablyat their best, Katy’s pulsating drums leave you… wellpulsating while Chris’ vocals scream your ears clean off,and is certainly a good shout for the albums ‘best songaward’.

During ‘Put It Out Yeah’ we find the band at their mostmelodic contrasting heavily with the albums title trackwhich is a moshers wet dream. For those of you that live at home, Eat Fuck Die is an

album to piss your parents off with… for everyone elseit’s an album to not so much piss your neighbours offwith but those in the next street.

REVIEW DAS SEXY CLAPEAT FUCK DIE!

SATURDAY 12TH MAYComing over to Malvern from Redditch The Delteurs

who consist of Sam Anderson - Lead Vocals & Guitars,Scott Dolphin – Drums and Rob Smith - Vocals & BassGuitar wowed a packed house at The Unicorn. The bandis influenced by the likes of Taste, The Who, The RollingStones, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, John Lee Hooker,The Beatles, Humble Pie and Led Zeppelin. This reallyshows during their set even when playing their ownmaterial with superb drum beats, thumping bass lines andmind blowing electric guitar that from the opening trackhas the audience on their feet rocking. The first setconsisted of a mix of covers and their own material, kicking off with “Boom Boom”, followed by “SummertimeBlues” and a personal favourite of mine “You Really GotMe”. “Love, No Money” and “The Light” both written bySam were also included and both these went downextremely well judging by the loud applause that theband got and thoroughly deserved. The second setcontinued in the same vein with the lads performingbrilliantly, playing another favourite of mine “Oh Well”along with a medley of “Shake your Moneymaker”

“Preachin Blues” and “Death Letter”. Again as with thefirst set they included some of their own material “MeanHearted Woman” and “Bullfight Blues”. The eveningfinished off with the audience screaming for more andThe Delteurs did not disappoint and played a medley ofsongs to die for “Can't Explain” “Paint it Black” “MyPropellor” “Gloria” “Voodoo Child” “CommunicationBreakdown”. One of the very best endings to a gig I haveseen in a good while. Really looking forward to seeingthese guys again soon they really do give a brilliantevenings entertainment. Youthcomm Radio announce “incredible” line up for

Minifest 2012Youthcomm Radio are set to host their fourth Minifest

Festival this year, and it promises to be the biggest oneyet. Having previously been involved, there was a murmuramongst the team at the end of last year’s success of “Itcan’t be called “Mini” fest any more. It’s getting too big!” Last years attendance certainly exceeded 2000 visitors

as the free wristbands that were handed out during thefestival last year (2000 of them) had ran out by thefestivals mid-point. That doesn’t even include the numberof listeners to the event. I am sure its Worcester’s onlyfestival broadcast live on Radio from start to finish. I’mnot sure how many festivals even achieve that feat in theUK, but I doubt it is many at all. So it’s a festival that isbigger than its boots suggest and this is why I feelCripplegate Park will be bustling once again.Mainly, at first glance, Minifest 2012 has a phenomenal

line up. It seems that invites have gone out to the creamof Worcestershire talent and they have bitten theorganizers hands off for the opportunity.Anya Pulver makes her Third (technically fourth)

appearance in her third different guise having appearedat the first Minifest in 2009 (twice; having played a set atthe beginning and end) then with Last Weeks Fashion in2010 and now this year with her latest project, Mansize. This Wicked Tongue have been invited back once again

after what can only be described as a Heroic performanceat Minifest 2011 and what I could easily see being a morememorable performance another year on.Lewis Spelt Backward also returns to the Minifest stage

to make another inspired choice to appear, being one of

the most entertaining live performers around. A festival hosted by Youthcomm is never without its host

of young “up and coming” performers who I would expectto be making their WMF debut soon. The SJS Band whomade a fine appearance last year are returning to Minifest, and quite the name to have on the bill being so wellestablished at such a young age, already boasting asupport for the Hoosiers.

It’s pleasing to see that The Night Shift has reformedto bring back their unique sound. Difficult to describebut Soul, Pop, Hip Hop is the best (and most fun) way.Fouad Symphonics is also returning bossing his way

into the Worcester music scene with his unique rap andrhymes, which will also surely be a name on the WMFbill in the future.New names to the line up include Steve Maitland

who is a Michael Buble tribute, Lady and the Sax,Charm who were the winners of Worcester’s Textfactors and Abbie Davies who was a fellow Finalist. Minifest 2012 will be on 23rd June at Cripplegate

Park and will also be broadcast live across Worcester on106.7fm. The full line up is:
