Aspart of this initiative, one of the first things he and theChamber will be looking into is the signage around thetown, including the roundabouts on the A420 and at GreatCoxwell. The Chamber of Commerce is also working on aninteractive event at the Faringdon Festival to be held on8th – 10th July as a way of raising awareness of theChamber, what it does and who its members are. If youwould like to find out more about any of the aboveprojects or would like to know more about what Chambermembership involves, then go along to their stand at theFestival or come to the next meeting, which is on Monday13th June at 6:30pm at The Crown Hotel.

The house is an ideal haven for a great many events and mini breaks. Romney tells us, “This weekend we arewelcoming a couple for a relaxing, romantic break before the arrival of their new baby in 8 weeks time andprior to this we hosted a sixteenth birthday party with a BBQ in the garden and a disco in the barn. Great fun.”

Do I need Planning Permissionfor my Loft Conversion?

The answer is: maybe not!

If you are thinking of converting your loft this may comeunder permitted development, not requiring planningpermission.

A loft conversion for your house is considered to bepermitted development, not an application for permission, subject to the following limits and conditions: A volume allowance of 40 cubic metres additional

roof space for terraced houses* A volume allowance of 50 cubic metres additional roof

space for detached and semi-detached houses* No extension beyond the plane of the existing roof

slope of the principal elevation that fronts the highway No extension to be higher than the highest part of the

roof Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing

house No verandas, balconies or raised platforms Side-facing windows to be obscure-glazed; any

opening to be 1.7m above the floor Roof extensions not to be permitted development in

designated areas** Roof extensions, apart from hip to gable ones, be set

back, as far as practicable, at least 20cm from theeaves

*Note: any previous roof space additions must be includedwithin the volume allowances listed above. Although youmay not have created additional space a previous ownermay have done so. The permitted developmentallowances described above apply to houses not flats, maisonettes or other buildings.

**Designated areas include national parks and the Broads,Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, conservation areasand World Heritage Sites.

Work on a loft or a roof may affect bats. You need toconsider protected species when planning work of thistype. A survey may be needed, and if bats are using thebuilding, a licence may be needed.

Building regulations approval is still required to convert aloft or attic into a livable space. Which looks at thestructural stability, including the existing roof, strength ofthe floor, safe escape from fire, safe stairs, thermal andsound insulation.

Planning Portal is the UK Government's online planningresource. More details can be found on:www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/commonprojects/loftconversion

If you need a larger loft conversion or it does not complywith the above, you may need planning permission, andperhaps the involvement of an architect.

The Dog StudioCanine Hydrotherapy for your favourite pooch

Tucked away in the Oxfordshire countryside is a remarkable facilityfor man’s best friend. The Dog Studio is a dog grooming andhydrotherapy centre, run by husband and wife team Adam and Trish, and we paid them a visit to find out a bit more about what they do.

So what’s canine hydrotherapy all about?

Canine hydrotherapy is a special form of hydrotherapy just for dogsand it helps with chronic conditions and post-operative recovery aswell as helping with dogs’ general fitness, especially if they arepreparing for surgery.

A lot of conditions in dogs can be aggravated by weight-bearingexercise and as well as affecting a dog’s overall fitness, the lack ofexercise can cause obesity, which affects their health even more. Ourhydrotherapy treatment work because the water bears your dog’sweight and allows them to move more freely, without putting anyweight on joints which may aggravate a medical condition.

Hydrotherapy can be used as part of a general fitness routine fordogs, and it can also help obese dogs to lose weight which, of course, will improve their general health. We also have an aquatic treadmillwhich is especially important for dogs with spinal and orthopaedicconditions, early stage degenerative disease and soft tissue injuries.Walking supported by the flow of water can really help to speed upthe recovery process.

What facilities does The Dog Studio offer?

Our hydrotherapy treatments take place in a large heated pool whichis sanitised to human standards and equipped with two swim jets, aramp and a resting platform, as well as an electric hoist to lift dogsthat are unable to walk along the ramp. We also have an aquatictreadmill which is all computerised, and a dog spa heated to 36degrees, which has eight massage jets and is ideal for the treatmentof arthritis and circulation problems, or just as a lovely treat for yourdog.

As well as the hydrotherapy area we have a fully equipped doggrooming parlour, and we are located in a beautiful area withextended, secure gardens so you can take your dog for a walk beforetheir treatment.

Who is behind The Dog Studio?

Heading up the team at The Dog Studio is Trish Bedford. Trish has beenrunning a dog grooming business for many years and because of herexceptional grooming skills and high standards, many of her clientshave gone on to qualify for Crufts. Trish trained as a caninehydrotherapist at the acclaimed Hawksmoor Training Centre inWarwickshire where she gained her level 3 certificate in hydrotherapy -it’s the only nationally accredited qualification in canine hydrotherapyin the UK.

Supporting Trish is her husband Adam. He has been involved with thetraining of Newfoundland dogs for water rescue for many years so heknows all about the benefits to dogs of water and swimming. Adam’sdaughter Ellesha is still at school studying hard to be a vet, but shehelps out on evenings and weekends as much as possible. Ellesha is a fully qualified lifeguard and she has an amazing ability with dogsin the water, spotted when she first started working with a Newfoundland Dog display team when she was just 11!

Completing the team are Debbie and Lisa. Debbie has worked with Trish since the start of the dog grooming business and she still doesan exceptional job bathing and brushing the dogs. Lisa is the newest recruit; she’s currently training for her City & Guilds in dog groomingand she’s going to be a valuable addition to the team.

Wood PigeonThe most common UK bird

There are estimated to be around 2.4 million pairs ofwood pigeon in the UK, most of which appear to be inour garden. I’m considering ditching the bird table andjust throwing full bags of seed straight out of thebedroom window. Blimey, can they eat or what?

Ernie, the biggest of the lot, never stops chomping. He’stwice the size of all the others and something of a ladies’man. His current partner Doris has just given birth totwo rather ugly chicks; they are supposed to share thetending of their young, but Ernie’s not interested. Hespends most of his time chasing younger models fromhedge to hedge, whilst Doris looks on, totally bemused.

I have been told pigeons pair for life - not Ernie, he’sworking his way through the entire population ofOxfordshire!

On the odd occasion when he does spend time lookingafter the gruesome twosome, Doris takes flight tostretch her wings and get some well earned food, onlyto find that Ernie’s scoffed the lot.

There are traits that are completely unique to pigeons. They make milk to feed their young. This is notregurgitated food, but real honest-to-goodness milk.Furthermore, both males and females make this milk.No other male creature on earth can do this!

That’s where Ernie got his name from - the old Benny Hillsong, The Fastest Milkman in the West.

A pigeon and its baby are flying over Faringdon. The baby said, “I can’t make it, I’m getting too tired.”

“Don’t worry,” the mother said. “I’ll tie a piece of stringto one of your legs and the other end to mine.”

The baby started to cry.“What’s wrong?” asked the mother.“I don’t want to be pigeon towed!”

Wine ValueThe extent of the ‘current economic climate’ (haven’t we justgrown to love THAT term?) continues to drive many of ustowards products that deliver extra value. Often, I have hadsmug confessions from clients saying that they have beendrinking the latest discounted or bargain wines from their localoff-licence. In the wine trade there are ongoing debates (as tooin the food industry) about the pros and cons of deepdiscounting or selling wines at cost in order to increase footfallor, as some put it, ‘lure’ consumers in to the shop for anopportunity for them to purchase many other items.

All debates aside, the fact of the matter is, quite simply, if thereis an offer on one product that is similar to another, chances areconsumers will purchase the item on promotion (unless theyhave an established brand loyalty). I confess I will do this myself,in order to balance the budget towards something for a specialoccasion!

I have hunted around locally for a couple of good quality winesthat offer a bit of loose change in the pocket!

Premiere Vouvray 2009Loire, France

Budgens £8.45 (down to £6.89 until 6th June)

Vouvray is produced from the white grape, cheninblanc. It is said to have originated in the Loire Valley, dating back over a thousand years. The marginalclimate of the Loire Valley produces chenin blancwines of great finesse that can range from dry tosweet and climate has a hand in this, with theinfluence of botrytis cinerea, also known as noble rot.Chenin blanc grapes that are affected by noble rot

shrivel and are covered in a grey mould. In short, the fungusdepletes the berry of its water content and in doing so creates agreater concentration of the remaining compounds. In sweetwines this gives flavours of marmalade and honey, to name a few.

This find from Budgens is a well-balanced generic wine thatdelivers a medium intensity of floral aromas; honeysuckle andjaponica with quince and melon. The palate is off-dry and rich, honeyed with mouth filling flavours of quince, honeydew melonand a touch of minerality on the finish. The length is long andbalanced, crisp and clean.

Match with spicy dishes; we are spoilt for choice in this area forquality Thai take-aways – spoil yourself!

Sollazzo Sangiovese/Merlot 2010Umbria, ItalyPortwell Angel £8.05

Produced from 70% sangiovese and 30% merlot, this wine is an approachable medium bodied redwith a focus on primary fruit flavours. Thepredominant aromas are a mixture of forestfruits: blackberries and redcurrants with redcherries. The palate delivers blackcurrants, red

cherries and vanilla spice with a hint of white pepper. It has asubtle, suedey integrated tannin structure that promotes thebalance of this wine. The length is medium, finishing withrefreshing acidity.

Simplistic in style, it has the freshness toaccompany a variety of cured meats, antipasto platters or a BBQ!
