The 36th Northern California Area Emmy® Awardstook on a cosmopolitan tone as America’s top politi-cal satirist Will Durst took the stage with America’smost beloved politician, San Francisco Mayor WillieBrown. Each man approached an opposing podiumas if to begin a debate. But all the audience heardwas good political humor, San Francisco style. Host Durst also did an opening monologue andpresented the final awards of the show to thedelight of everyone. Presenters from all regions ofthe chapter maintained a swift pace by giving away80 Emmy® awards in less than three hours. Theshow never slowed down from Musical DirectorMichael Hatfield’s melodious introduction, to JackLa Lanne’s Emmy® Exercise Minute video, to the“Voices of God” (Terry Lowry and Fred LaCosse)when they ended the ceremony by calling everyoneto dinner. It was no accident that this show moved. Itstarted with Governor and Design Director DeanneMoenster-Poitras’ ingenious two-podium design ofa set built by John Mayne. Separate podiumsallowed presenters to announce the winners at one, while Emmy® Guardians Paulette Bleam and DougJohnson handed out awards at the other. The back-stage crew had the timing of a Swisswatch. Governors Samuel Belilty and AnnikaWood made sure all presenters took the stage in atimely manner. Stage Assistant Terry Adamsworked tirelessly behind the curtains to make surethe presenters were given the correct envelope, amost critical job. San Francisco Vice President andAwards Chair Javier Valencia and Membership ChairBrian Avery handed out the actual personalized

Emmy® awards to each recipient after their speech.Stage Manager Rick Warren was exceptional as hecontrolled the action backstage with the help ofGovernor Tamar Sarkissian and Stage AssistantJoanne Jung Wohlers. Governor and serial Emmy®

award winner Wayne Freedman even stood in forthe presenters during rehearsal so the crew couldrun through mock presentations. Governor Wayne Philippo called the shots asDirector of the show. Former Governor and Produc-tion Manager John Murray worked tirelessly tomake sure the technical quality was perfect. Gover-nor and Technical Coordinator Gary Schultz madenumerous suggestions to keep the show soundinggreat. Governor Alison Gibson produced the vitalScholarship presentation with the help of Stanfordstudent Alana Dong. Governor and After Party Producer Terri MariaAmos organized the Knight’s Catering menu andworked with Lance LeDrew of Glow Lighting to setup the ambience. She arranged for the return of theband Masterpiece and worked with GovernorDeanne Moenster-Poitras on the beautiful decora-tions and floral centerpieces by Floradora Designsand Carolyn Compton. President Lynn R Friedman led the Emmy®

Event Committee and was a vigilant time-cutterwherever possible. By the numbers, 15 presenters gave out arecord 80 Emmy® awards in 176 minutes in front of arecord audience of 700. But numbers alone don’tdefine a show or make it memorable. The people do.To everyone who helped out this year…Thank You.The Emmy® show wouldn’t be possible without you!

The three premium Station Awards went to KGO(ABC 7) in San Francisco for Station Excellence,KNTV for News Excellence (both repeat winners fromlast year), and KDTV (Univision 14) in San Franciscoas well as KOVR (CBS 13) in Sacramento for Commu-nity Service.

Emmy® awards, however, are rewarded to indi-viduals, not stations, and there were some stand-outwinners worth highlighting. Three people took homethree statues each: Anna Werner and Jeff Harrisfrom KPIX and Gerson Sanchez from KDTV. One ofthe biggest upsets of the night had to be whenneither Wayne Freedman nor Mike Sugerman wonthe News Writing Emmy® award. KNTV reporterNoelle Walker seemed genuinely surprised as sheacknowledged them both for setting the bar so highduring her acceptance speech. Sugerman did walkaway with an award for On Camera Reporting, whileFreedman’s unprecedented string of 15 consecutiveyears winning at least one statue (47 total) ended.

Chapter President Lynn R Friedman also pre-sented the Board of Governors’ Service Medallion toTrustee, Activities Chair and Past President CynthiaZeiden.

In the end, out of 930 total entries in 63 differentcategories, 257 were nominated but only 80 werechosen as winners, 192 statues to 162 individuals, roughly the same percentage as past years. For allthose who came up empty this year, there truly isalways next year. Following is complete list ofEmmy® Award recipients:

WHO’S REALLWHO’S REALLWHO’S REALLWHO’S REALLWHO’S REALLYYYYY#1 IN NEWS?1 IN NEWS?1 IN NEWS?1 IN NEWS?1 IN NEWS?

The annual May “sweeps” period ended with twoBay Area TV stations sending out releases claimingbragging rights as #1, and our review of the Nielsenratings they provided shows they’re both correct. KTVU (Fox 2) in Oakland and KGO (ABC 7) in SanFrancisco both ended the May book in different topspots. KTVU won mornings and prime time news(10:00 p.m.), while KGO won at 5:00, 6:00 and11:00 p.m. Both wins apply to total households aswell as the key 25-54 year olds demo coveted mostby advertisers. And probably most important toboth stations, each added additional viewers in thatkey demo to their winning evening newscasts, whiletheir competition all lost viewers. KGO ended themonth #1 from sign on to sign off, while KTVU hadthe most total news viewers in the demo (278,000total viewers when you add up all 7.5 hours of itsnews, compared with 196,000 total 25 – 64 yearolds throughout KGO’s 7 hours of news). You’ve heard him called humble, affable, andhard working. World News anchor Charles Gibsonbuilt a reputation during his years on Good MorningAmerica as one of the true “good guys” of thebroadcast news industry. There was narry a nega-tive word from a co-worker, and when ABC askedhim to work a split shift many nights to also anchorlive evening magazine shows, he burned the candleat both ends without a single public complaint. What was left out of those descriptions was thefact that Charles Gibson is a top journalist, and hasbeen for decades. That’s the side that’s finallybeing showcased on World News, and the side thatwas immmediately evident to everyone at KGO TV(ABC 7) during the two days he anchored WorldNews live from San Francisco. Don’t get me wrong, the work horse attitude isstill there. After flying cross country the first dayand anchoring World News from KGO’s rooftop hisfirst evening in town, Gibson schmoozed with thestation’s top managers over dinner (he only half-jokingly told the staff, and the San FranciscoChronicle, his primary reason for taking World Newson the road is to “suck up to the affiliates”), fol-lowed by a station-wide breakfast bright and earlythe next morning, followed by interviews for a story

WWWWWORLD NEWS COMES TORLD NEWS COMES TORLD NEWS COMES TORLD NEWS COMES TORLD NEWS COMES TO SFO SFO SFO SFO SF

on Bay Area business for that night’s newscast, followed by anchoring World News live again withthe Golden Gate Bridge as a backdrop, followed byanother plane ride to Seattle, where he started theprocess all over again. Over breakfast at KGO, Gibson mostly talkedabout his favorite subject, journalism: upcomingelection coverage, global warming and the like. Buthis sense of humor was never far below the surface, pointing out the station treated him to a muchfancier dinner the night before. He told everybodyto please call him Charlie, “It’s Charles on the air,Charlie everywhere else.” And while complimentingthe news staff over the previous night’s reports,Gibson said the station only needs to “figure outhow to solve its problem with the weather depart-ment.” His good friend Spencer Christian laughedthe hardest at the good-natured dig. The twoworked together for years on GMA, and have re-mained close since Spencer left to do weather inSan Francisco. The rest of the Bay Area had anopportunity to enjoy their banter in the afternoonwhen Spencer interviewed Charlie on The View fromthe Bay. In the end, Gibson’s visit gave the rest ofthe country the opportunity to see a bit more of theBay Area, and people at KGO the opportunity to seethe many sides of Charlie.

We had a blast again at the Emmy® Showcaseat Dolby Labs Screening Room. First we screenedthe Emmy® Recipient Best Historical/Cultural Pro-gram/Special: Mighty Warriors of Comedy, KQED/57 minutes: Mighty Warriors of Comedy is a rousing introduc-tion to one of the most devastatingly funny comedytroupes of the past decade, the 18 Mighty MountainWarriors (18MMW), an audacious Asian-Americansketch comedy troupe hailing from San Francisco, and now trying to break into TV and movies in LA. But most people in mainstream America havenever heard of them. Why? Is it simply becausethey haven’t enjoyed break-out success past theconfines of their San Francisco home, or their prima-rily Asian-American fan base? Or is their brand ofhumor simply not accessible to an average Americanaudience? Or could it be that the current Hollywoodmachine would never give an Asian American troupethe big break they need, to see if they could indeedcross over? Or, are they simply not that funny? Mighty Warriors of Comedy allows you to judgefor yourself. The documentary provides an entertain-ing glimpse into the world of the Warriors and aneye-opening exploration of why a troupe like theWarriors, no matter how funny, may never achievemainstream popularity. Utilizing a combination ofpersonal interviews and live concert footage, thedocumentary traces the struggle that the fringeartist faces, and how that battle is complicatedfurther by cultural identification. Then we had a Q&A session with the producer,Kibi Anderson. She said the comedy troupe is nowsplit between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Next, we screened the Emmy® Recipient BestDocumentary: A Bridge So Far-A Suspense Story:a documentary news special on the wild and troubledhistory of the new east span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The film is produced and di-rected by Brisbane filmmaker David L. Brown and is

sponsored by the Professional Engineers in CaliforniaGovernment. Addressing what State Senator TomMcClintock calls “one of the great fiascos of the20th and 21st centuries in California history,” thisdocumentary finds both the humor and the drama inthat story. During the 16 years since the LomaPrieta earthquake collapsed a section of the eastspan of the Bay Bridge, numerous delays, setbacks, and reversals have left its replacement literally up inthe air. Even today with a design finally selected, noone knows what the project will eventually cost orwhen it will be finished. This is a matter of great concern. Seismologistslay the odds at 67% that another major earthquake, possibly on the scale of the 1906 disaster, will shakethe Bay Area at any time during the next threedecades. The Bay Bridge is one of the nation’s majortransportation arteries and is especially vital forCalifornia’s economy. Will the replacement span forthe Bay Bridge be finished before the next Big Onestrikes? Until it is, the State will remain “in sus-pense.” Filmmaker David L. Brown (“Surfing For Life,”“Bound by the Wind”) tells the story of the BayBridge fiasco with a light-hearted touch. The film, including never-before-seen archivalfootage and humorous animation, tells the storybehind the headlines of the now $6.2 billion project.Actor Geoff Hoyle hosts the show. After the screening we had a Q&A session withthe show producer, David L. Brown. CONAN IN SCONAN IN SCONAN IN SCONAN IN SCONAN IN SAN FRANCISCOAN FRANCISCOAN FRANCISCOAN FRANCISCOAN FRANCISCO

What follows is a random collection of thoughtsand observations from the week I covered ConanO’Brien’s visit to San Francisco. Conan’s visit toSan Francisco couldn’t have been timed better fromhis point of view. He was able to visit the newestmember of his family. His sister who lives in SanRafael had given birth a week or so earlier. His LateNight show taped at 4:00 each afternoon to a fullhouse. People lucky enough to get free tickets linedup hours earlier outside the Orpheum. About 15minutes till show time, one of the writers warmed upthe audience. One night, they had the crowd recorddifferent kinds of applause and laughter for editingpurposes (i.e. light chuckle that progresses intoroaring laughter, etc.) The band would then play fora good 5-10 minutes. The producers seamlesslytransitioned into the taping once they felt the crowdwas juiced enough (at least, that was my sense.) They went completely nuts when Conan walkedout across a mockup of the Golden Gate Bridge thatwas the centerpiece of the set at the Orpheum. Itwas like a rock concert; took a good minute to getthe audience to chill. I’m not sure how well that

By Bob Redell energy translated to the tube. You would’ve neverknown it watching Conan’s first show in San Fran-cisco, especially considering his energy, but he wasactually sick with a stomach bug that first night. Weknow this because he told everyone who shook hishand to wash afterwards. The downside of being thestar of the show: can’t call in sick. Surprisingly, nothing about the show was set in stone. Duringmany of the commercial breaks, Conan and hiswriters huddled for last minute ideas / changes tothe scripts or guest interviews. It was lots of workfor the cue card guys who had to rapidly makechanges. By the way, they’re both named Steveand both are left handed. After the show each night, fans waited outsidethe stage door to get autographs from Conan, MaxWeinberg and other members of the band. Onenight, the show sent out Jerry Ruck, the Conanlook-a-like from Martinez. The fans fell for it for agood 8 seconds. Suckers! So, what happened tothat Golden Gate Bridge? The show did not scrap it.Instead, word is they kept it and sent it back toNew York (as if Manhattan needs another bridge.)
