What exciting news from Premier! I am very proud of all the members of UPBA, and all the poodle handlers in general, for the wonderful job they did in presenting Poodles and Standard Poodles at Premier. The first ever poodles-only show at Premier that was hosted by MCPCA was huge success! Congratulations to all the winners, AND also to all those who entered! I also congratulate all the poodles and their handlers who performed in obedience, agility, and weight-pull. Did we have poodles represented at any other events? In conjunction with our show, UPBA will be hosting a vWD clinic, offered through VetGen. Please see the flyer in this newsletter that gives you all the details. Thank you to Katie Dokken for setting up this clinic! In case you didn’t see the notice on our member e-list, the Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Janice Bennett as Vice President of UPBA in May. burden from the few who do so much for our Association. Perhaps you would like to volunteer for a special task within a committee rather than take on the commitment to be a committee member. Working for UPBA in this manner is just fine and would be most appreciated! For example, there are some ideas for Fund Raising and for Publicity that wouldn’t require much time, but would help us tremendously. Please let the Board or the Committee Chairs know how you would like to help. Enjoy your poodles and keep their wonderful minds busy! Sally [email protected]

I want to thank the members of UPBA for all their thoughts and prayers after my husband's death. It was a difficult time and all your kindnesses will be remembered. The donation to my daughter's college fund was much appreciated. It is wonderful to know that there are so many caring people out there. My sincere thanks again to all of you that helped me get through this terrible time in my life. Sincerely, Janice Bennett

MCPCA Specialty at Premier

By Elizabeth Glew The Multi-Color Poodle Club of America hosted a very nice poodle specialty at Premier with an entry of around 40 dogs. Beth Snedegar, our judge, moved things along smoothly, which helped to compensate for our late start time. Since we were scheduled after the Alaskan Klee Kai specialty, we had to wait for their very large entry to be judged. That was an experience. The AKK may just be the most vocal of all the UKC breeds! We got started around 9:00 pm, and finished up the non-licensed classes about 11:00 -- a long evening, but well worth it. There were gorgeous poodles in the ring, with both the solids and the multis making a very good showing. Exhibitors were supportive, enthusiastically cheering for the dogs in spite of the late hour, and MCPCA provided lovely rosettes and more prizes than the table could hold. I think every winner received a trophy, and the variety of lovely poodle-related items was amazing. David Arthur's dog Jon-Jon was one of the ringside highlights, showing up miraculously transformed from a Solid into an Abstract by tufts of white hair that David had trimmed off my girl Lucy that afternoon. Gloria Ogdahl's dog Ivy,

bred by Janice Bennett, was another hit as she took one look at my wheelchair and decided that I obviously needed a Standard in my lap. Best of all was the quality of the poodles we saw in the ring. For me it was a dream come true to see so many good poodles at Premier, not only at the Specialty, but throughout the weekend. In fact, poodles were well represented in Obedience and Agility as well as Conformation and it was a real pleasure to see them working as only poodles can. I hope that next year we'll have poodles in Family Obedience and Weight Pull as well. This weekend is always the highlight of the show year for me, and the addition of a poodle specialty this year made it even better. For those who haven't checked the UKC website lately, here's a very nice exerpt from Kathy Lorentzen's article about her experiences judging at Premier. "Another highlight on Saturday came in the form of some of the most beautiful Standard Poodles I have ever had the pleasure to see. In both Solid and Multi-Colored, I had dogs who were wonderfully upstanding and short-backed, with hard tops, incredible front assemblies and long, lean yet strong heads. They were breathtaking on their legs, covering ground and carrying themselves not only like true Poodles, but also like real, sound, useful Gun Dogs."

Borst-Reed "This is more than a book for groomers. It’s an illustrated, step-by-step guide for using clicker training to teach any dog to be completely at ease and cooperative with physical care, including medical treatment, baths, clipping, and ear, tooth, and nail care. In the zoo world they call it husbandry behavior, and use the clicker to trim hooves (think rhinos and giraffes), draw blood, and give shots (think tigers and killer whales). How come we’re still muzzling dogs? This book is full of practical tips; for example I was tickled by the photo essay on how

to teach big dogs to put themselves on the grooming or examination table (provide moveable steps). This book will be invaluable to vet techs, conformation show folks, breeders, and of course, to groomers." -Karen Pryor Whether you groom at home or take your dog to a grooming salon, the clicker and it's methods outlined in this book can be used to ensure that the whole experience is pleasant. Even the professional groomer will benefit from understanding and using these methods. Dogs will enjoy being groomed and owners will find the process rewarding. Grooming helps you keep a close eye on your dog's body and gives you the skill of being able to identify any changes that may occur. A mentally happy and physically healthy dog performs any request willingly and in a confident and joyful manner; and if a dog is happy and confident then the owner will be too. As a professional groomer and dog trainer, Karen has been able to combine both roles to show how all dogs can enjoy the process, and remove the stress often associated with handling. This book is directed towards teaching both owner and groomer how to use the clicker mehtods in order to make grooming and enjoyable process for both dog and caregiver alike. Small or big, young or old every dog that Karen has groomed loves the outcome. They prance and run around with a renewed sense of invigorated freedom. It's not only the dog's that love it, the owners too are always pleased, their dog looks good, feels good and smells great - a combination that inspires happiness all round. "I have groomed many dogs that have obviously not had the best past experiences in the grooming parlour including ones that were often sedated to be groomed - I can quite confidently say that through the positive fun methods that I use tht none of my clients are sedated anymore, most of them actually enjoy being groomed and some of them even come running." This book can be used for all care givers, owners, veterinary or grooming staff. It builds on a basic understanding of clicker training as covered in the Foundation Book of the Clicker Trainers Series. KPBK148R 38.00

Low-Cost Poodle Bathtub By Elizabeth Glew

Last year we bought a new house with a big yard for the dogs. It’s in a neighborhood that we like and is exactly what we were looking for, with one exception. The bathtub is no good for bathing dogs. I’m quite pleased with the solution I worked out, which could be used by anyone needing an inexpensive dog bathing set-up. I went to Home

Depot and got a large Rubbermaid tub and a 3/4" Forstner drill bit. From the plumbing department, I got a 3/4" plastic insulating bushing, a 3/4" nylon barb-to-MIP adapter, and a length of 3/4" braided hose. With the Forstner bit, I

drilled a hole in a bottom corner of the tub. Then I pushed the barb-to-MIP adapter through the hole with the long part on the outside. The salesman had advised me to put a little soap on the inside of the hose, which allowed it to slip over the adapter without much trouble.

Then I screwed the bushing onto the inside end of the adapter and I had a functional drain. The drain hose is long enough to reach my basement floor drain and the

water comes from a hose attached to the faucet of my laundry tub. The tub is bigger than I need for Mo, who weighs 20 pounds. I can even wash my 60 lb Belgian, although I do tend to slosh some water on the floor when I do him. I usually save my back

by sitting on a chair next to the tub. The project only took about an hour, and the total cost was about $45. Happy Bathing!

Looking for Something Fun to

Do With Your Poodle This Summer? Try a Dog-Powered-

Scooter! By Sue Dearholt

I have a young poodle – Taj Ma Dawg - that needed a job. He’s great natured, but busy all the time. It worried me that he’s too young for many sport activities and yet he’s creating them on this own – sometimes destructively. Then one night I walked in the house from work, and Paul yelled “come see this” from the living room. I

walked in to find the TV tuned to Fox News Network with a story on dog-powered scooters. Maybe some of you saw it. For two minutes, people were riding on scooters on trails along the beach with their dogs. Everyone was having fun! I thought “this has Taj written all over it!”

9

So after seeing the news story, I ordered him a scooter and harness from www.http/dogpoweredscooter.com . I found that the owner/founder, Mark Shue, assists in all aspect of the scooter purchasing process. He supplies a full-proof order form where you supply the measurements for your dog and he checks back with you on his recommendation. The best part about his design, as you can see by the pictures, is that the dog is slightly behind and on the right – off road – side to you. This prevents the dog from being in control or being in danger next to traffic. You have control of the steering and brakes. In the past, dogs were pulling scooters with ropes out front, like skijoring. They could easily drag you right down into the ditch, as you had no navigational control. The scooter arrived and was of excellent construction with an awesome harness. Mark supplies great instructions for assembly and training to get your dog started. After an easy evening of assembly we went camping at Itasca State Park, headwaters of the Mississippi River. It is full of paved bike trails. In one lesson Taj was scooting. It was sooo much fun! After scooting all around the campground, filled with bicyclists, we were inundated with visitors wondering about the poodle scooting through the campgrounds and on the bike trails. It was great fun to show off both our great poodles and the scooter. If you’re looking for something fun to do with your poodle or you have a poodle that needs a fun job, this could be your ticket. It’s great training for other disciplines as well. You can incorporate agility cues for “left” and “right” as well as the

other cues for stay and forward. You are also working your dog to the right of you (in single harness), which is great if you’re transitioning from obedience to any other discipline that requires other than left-sided work. Its great fun and we can’t wait to get a couple of our other poodles going as well as Taj, because Mark has attachments for his scooters for 2, 3, and 4 dogs. You could really rap some RPM’s on a paved trail with 4 poodles!! Can’t Wait! Check out his website for pictures of multiple dog hitches.

Family Obedience Test

By Gloria Ogdahl

This June Kelsey and I had the honor of attending UKC Premier!! We had 2 dogs qualify for Top Ten, and also brought 2 more for the regular classes. It was a very enjoyable weekend, with wins and non-wins. The wins were nice, but the most fun was being with like minded folks and rooting for everyone!! At times we did get to be a rowdy crowd.. LOL One of the highlights was being able to watch the Family Obedience and Protection competition. What a wonderful group of trainers. Although the main attractions were the higher ranked dogs, Family obedience had many entries. First place went to Luann Curry. Personally, I felt the family obedience part is something that every dog should do. It consists of sitting under control while the handler greets another person, a down stay with handler at side (this is also an honor where another dog is working in the ring) . The dog must willingly down and then sit on command when honor is complete. Healing on a loose lead, displaying slow, fast, turns, and willingness to heal around people (or cones were used). A moving sit might be the most difficult exercise. The dog is in healing position. You walk out 15-20 feet, give a sit command and the dog must sit and STAY while

you drop the leash and go out 15-20 feet. When the judge signals, you return to the dog. The down with recall is basically the same as any recall, except the dog starts from a down. The scoring is fairly lax, and I would expect that a reasonable performance would get a passing score. This is about having a dog that is under control.

Once this is passed, you can go on to the Practical obedience part which consists of going thru a gate, placing food down on the floor, and entering and exiting a car. I really liked this part of the demo.. very practical!!! Imagine having a dog that sits quietly while you go thru gates or doors, doesn't jump into every open car door it sees. Sits or lays down in the car and doesn't knock the food bowl out of your hand while you're preparing it!! This is a little more difficult than AKC Good Citizen Award, but should be very attainable for ALL poodles!!

On top of it, you can advance farther into the alert training (which all poodles could also do). Don't be intimidated by the advanced training/trainers. They're a wonderful group!!

For Responsible Ownership

Submitted by Julie Borst Reed The complete set of rules and scoring can be viewed at

Mississippi recently passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 560 -- a resolution endorsing the AKC Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program sponsored by K9 Advantix®. This bill supports the program's effort to promote responsible dog ownership in the state.

www.ukcdogs.com/DogSportRules.htm

Sponsored by Senator Perry Lee, this resolution is

quite timely and rather unique in that it specifically addresses the importance of well-behaved dogs in emergencies and times of disaster. "One of the most important parts of the AKC CGC Program is the Responsible Dog Owner's Pledge," states CGC Director, Mary Burch, "which stresses the need for dogs to have identification." Senator Lee recognized that the consequences for beloved pets and their owners would have been drastically different during Hurricane Katrina if the dogs had all been microchipped, tattooed, or were wearing a collar with identification.

A UKC club for the Poodle and Standard Poodle Breeds

United Poodle Breeds Association (UPBA) http://www.upba.org

is proud to host a vWD health clinic for the following breeds:

Bernese Mountain Dog, Doberman Pinscher, Drentsche Patrijshond, German Pinscher, Kerry Blue Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Papillon, Pembroke Welsh Corgi,

Poodle (all sizes), Scottish Terrier, and Shetland Sheepdog.

The vWD Health Clinic will run from October 1 to October 31, 2006. Cost per vWD Kit: $99.00. This is a savings of $41 per test kit from

VetGen’s regular price of $140.00.

We will collect payments and forms from each owner requesting test kits for their dogs during the health clinic period. We will forward them to

VetGen for processing once we collect the 25 minimum required and again at the end of the health clinic period. VetGen will send each owner the Sample Collection kits which should be returned directly to VetGen for testing. Each owner will receive results directly from VetGen. You can

participate in this health clinic by submitting the health clinic form on the next page any time by U.S. Mail during the dates listed above or by

attending the UPBA’s Fall Poodle/Standard Poodle Specialty Show on October 14, 2006 at Bel Air, Maryland. UPBA’s Specialty show is being held

in conjunction with the Old Line State United Dog Club’s (UKC) All breed shows at the same date and location.

United Poodle Breeds Assocation (UPBA) is hosting this health clinic free of charge for the benefit of the Poodle/Standard Poodle breeds and the dog

community in general and does not receive any compensation, commission, or discount for offering this service. For more information, see our website at:
