Dear Friends,

As summer is coming I have a challenge to you. I want to encourage you to think of this summer as a time of Spiritual Growth. You can use the slower pace of summer to begin to reflect and pray about how you can grow Spiritually. Perhaps you can begin to consider how God wants to use you. I believe He has given you spiritual gifts and He wants you to use them for His purpose. This summer could be a wonderful time to take the Spiritual Gifts analysis and discover what your gifts for ministry are. The Ministry Resource Team (MRT) would be happy to meet with you, help you with the analysis and then counsel you as to how you can use your gifts.

This summer you could join a Small Group. We are starting about one group each month. Here is an opportunity to “develop lifelong relationships while learning God’s Word”. Being in a Small Group would help you grow in your faith and go to a deeper level in your walk with Christ. Or maybe this summer could be the moment when you go to the Information Table, ask for a Cursillo application and fill it out. I am confident that by going on a Cursillo Weekend you will grow in some new and very powerful ways in your walk with Christ.

Or maybe this summer could be a time when you read a good Christian book. Check out the fine display of books we have in the Hub (our Coffee Shop and Bookstore) or our Church Library. Sure, you could read a secular novel but why not use this summer as an opportunity to grow spiritually.

I just think you could look at these coming summer months in a different way than maybe you have in the past. Perhaps think of this as a year of a “Summer with a Purpose”. Certainly summer can be a time of vacations and the kids home from school and their summer activities, but maybe it can include a little something more. Just give it a try this summer and you just might find it to be one of the richest and most rewarding in years.

If any of these suggestions sound good to you, please call the church office, we will be happy to help you and connect you with the proper resources.

Yours because of him

A Word from our Church President

Immediately following the third Sunday service on

June 6, 2010, Mount of Olives will be convening a

special congregational meeting to take our second

constitutionally required vote to terminate our relation-

ship with the ELCA. This vote represents the end of a

very long process that began in 2001, including

numerous meetings with the Bishop of the Pacifica

Synod, meetings with other local congregations,

hundreds of hours of research, presentations by other

competing Lutheran bodies, along with several

petitions to the Synod and to the national church. As

challenging as this process has been, this church

council, along with those preceding councils, remain

confident that this is the proper action for Mount of

Olives, and for the Kingdom of God.

We are richly blessed by what God has done here at

MOO. He has given us direction and provided us with

all the talent required to succeed in accomplishing

what He has set before us, and that includes you. We

have amazing vibrant ministries unambiguously

focused on being a place where God’s teachings are

clear, consistent and where His love is felt. Mount of

Olives takes God seriously - it’s just who we are!

You don’t have to look very long to find individuals who

have been highly engaged in mission work for a long

time. We have people who have been consistent and

persistent in their efforts of making MOO a safe, warm

and instructive place where people can find

redemption, healing and grace. One Pastor alone

cannot do this, it takes a congregation of pastors, each

committed to adding their own effort in personal

growth, and growth of the ministry. This is genuinely

remarkable, and special; but not because we’re

remarkable or special but rather because He is. This

ministry is about getting out of the way and letting God

lead. This is hard for us humans, we’re not typically

good at it, but that’s OK because God is patient as well.

Our voting is a change for Mount of Olives, but not in

who we are, but rather a change in how effective we

want to be. I look forward to your participation on

June 6.

In Him,

Tom Coss

WE'RE BUILDING TWO A DAYWE'RE BUILDING TWO A DAYWE'RE BUILDING TWO A DAYWE'RE BUILDING TWO A DAY

In the 1880s the Methodist Church was privileged to have a leader named C. C. McCabe. He was a church extension pioneer and strategist, and a great achiever he was.

One day he was on a train, riding out to the Pacific Northwest to help develop and launch a strategy for planting hundreds of new congrega-tions in that region. On that train he picked up a newspaper and read an account of a speech given the day before by Robert Ingersoll, the most noted agnostic/infidel of his time. It was addressed to the national meeting of Atheists and Agnostics (something like that). In his speech Robert Ingersoll proclaimed that the churches of America were in the process of dying and in another generation there wouldn't be any of them left. That incensed C. C. McCabe. He got off the train at the next town, went into the Western Union office and dictated a telegram to Robert Ingersoll. The message arrived at the convention while it was still meeting. The telegram read, "Dear Bob, in the Methodist church we're building a new church a day and we proposed to make it two." Signed: C. C. McCabe. Somehow the word about that telegram got out and a folk song evolved in the Pacific Northwest. It was sung at revival meetings, brush arbors, etc. It went like this: The infidels, a motley band, In council met and said, "The churches are dying throughout the land And soon they'll all be dead." When suddenly a telegram came And caught them with dismay, Reading, "All hail the power of Jesus' name, We're building two a day. Then the refrain went: We're building two a day, dear Bob; We're building two a day! All hail the power of Jesus' name, We're building two a day! This should be the spirit of the church today. Every believer needs to understand that the purpose of the church is to reach others with the Love of God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Pray that we are transformed to desire and work to create a church with the attitude of “building two a day”.

CONFIRMANDS!CONFIRMANDS!CONFIRMANDS!CONFIRMANDS!

Confirmation ministry is a pastoral and

educational ministry of the church that helps the

baptized through Word and Sacrament to

identify more deeply with the Christian

community and participate more fully in its

mission.

Because the choice to baptize infants and raise

them in the Christian Faith is a decision made by

one’s parents, the Confirmation Program

becomes the formal process through which an

individual student is given the information

necessary to take ownership of his or her faith.

The Confirmation process at Mount of Olives

Church is an in-depth discipleship program

where middle school and high school

students are instructed in Luther’s Small

Catechism, memorize 15 Bible Verses, learn

how to present The Gospel, take eight

exams, and finish with a 25-page written final

exam.

1,358 POUNDS OF FOOD DONATED IN MAY

Although our May food drive response was rather small, Mount of Olives attendees supported SCO and SWWC in other incredible and unique ways. Check out the ways that MOO members have used their ingenuity and passion to support families in crisis. To continue this incredible commitment, each time you go to the market, please drop a can or two into your shopping cart to bring to the SHARE Food Drive on the first (Communion) Sunday of each month.

Look at how MOO members supported the SHARE Ministry last month!

SHARE Monthly Food Drive donations for the month totaled 546 pounds to benefit Southwest Community Center (SWCC) and South County Outreach (SCO)

MOO Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) held their biannual charity drive, collecting 100 pounds of diapers and cleaning supplies to support SCO families

The Quilters Group donated 5 beautiful quilts for the homeless

The Adult Day Care Center and the HUB contributed 269 pounds of surplus bread and baked goods to SCO

Good Samaritan Box donations of 100 pounds for SWCC

Various MOO members and friends donated 323 pounds to SCO

Each month MOO volunteers donate brown bag lunches for the SWCC Thursday lunch which feed 250 individuals

CURVES in Lake Forest donated 20 pounds of travel-size toiletry items to SCO

Special thanks go to the MOO Monday volunteers who continue to help sort and pack up food each week at the SCO Food Pantry, Michael Sheen who helps on Food Drive Sundays, and the Thursday Morning Women’s Bible Study Group for their continued donations.

Why Do We Have Stephen Ministry?

People sometimes may ask or think, why do we

need Stephen Ministers--don’t we have a pastor to

provide caring ministry? The simple answer is that our pastors cannot possibly provide all

the caring ministry. Our pastors are like firefighters — when a crisis happens, they rush to the scene

to put out the fire. But shortly after that, another fire will break out in our congregation and they’ll

rush to that scene. They still will provide care to the victims of the first fire, but their time quickly be-

comes consumed by the second, third, and fourth fires. This is on top of their other duties as pas-

tors.

This is where Stephen Ministers come in. The pastors will always be our firefighters, but our

Stephen Ministers are people who come in after the fire is put out (and sometimes before) and help

victims sort through and clear the debris and begin to rebuild. Stephen Ministers continue to give

care as long as needed during the rebuilding process — one month, two months, six months, possi-

bly a year or more. They provide the steady, consistent one-to-one follow-up care that our pastor

wants to, but simply cannot provide.

SOUTHWEST COMMUNITY CENTER UPDATE

Build It Better Campaign - All of us are very excited about this op-portunity to rebuild the Center so that its incredible ministry to the disadvantaged can continue far into the future. Jack Werner and Diana Corbo have joined the Board and are working very hard. Our Lord has been working miracles from the moment the fire was out. We could write a book and probably will! If you still have questions about the Rebuild, please call me at 581-3062 or Sally Jo Clark at 215-1364.

Brown Bag Lunch Program & On Going Needs at SCC - Your support of the temporary Brown Bag program is really wonderful. Also, regarding the SHARE program (food collection shared by Southwest Community Center/ "Santa Ana Kitchen" and South County Outreach) on the first Sunday each month, you may donate baby diapers and formula instead of non-perishable food items if you so desire. They are always needed. Also, there has been a need lately for, especially, cereal and canned fruit.

Help Needed! - I am looking for one or two persons to train for lead-ership of the Alternative Christmas Fair which, this year, will be on November 21. This is not a difficult job because all of our people are well trained in their respective activities. Please call me if you are interested.

The subject of interpreting what we all call a “coincidence” has

been fascinating to most of us all our lives.

I have just finished reading SQuire Rushnell`s book titled When God winks at You* which tells, through many interesting true stories, how God speaks directly to you through the power of

coincidence. He has labeled these messages as GOD WINKS.

Choir members over the past several months have been relating their stories about per-sonal GOD WINKS and Marilyn Atchue told her story to the congregation in the April issue of The Olive Branch. Think about it — everyone has had numerous messages from God who has told you to do something to help a friend or family member, or yourself (often this GOD WINK is just in time). Perhaps you have received a thought to help you

in life or career.

Rushnell says, “Isn`t it amazing --- If you totaled up the number of times you were just about to step off a curb but were distracted by something, when you found yourself almost striding in front of a fast moving car, when a small voice deep within – just in the nick of time – stopped you from taking that step. I suspect you`d be amazed. Sometimes

called instinct, I call it the small, still voice of God.”

Paralleling SQuire`s statement above, I have a personal story. Back in 1984 as one of about 2000 course marshals in the Olympic cycling race held in Mission Viejo, I was stationed at the corner of Margarite and La Paz where the course made a turn to the left onto LaPaz. During the race for some reason I took one step off the curb unknowingly into the cycling course. With my back to a rider going full speed, I stepped back not more than a second later as he whipped abound the corner. I almost caused an international Olympic incident as well as two people being injured. Was this a GOD

WINK? At the time I just felt very lucky.

Recently I heard from one of our members about a perfect example of a GOD WINK to help a family member. This person woke out of a sound sleep at 3 am and felt an intense need to phone her brother in the Midwest. She told me that even though she and her brother were close that they usually talked in the evening – never in the morning. He answered the phone immediately, 5 am his time, and she knew instantly something was wrong. It turned out that his beloved dog had suddenly died just two hours earlier and he really needed some family support. Why did she phone him at 3 am our time? It was

a GOD WINK , of course and one so helpful to her brother

To quote Mr. Rushnell, “One of the things I like the most about God Winks is that they are tangible signposts from God, making His presence known in our lives every single

day.

Hello from Kid City!

We have had an amazing line up of spotlight guests! If you don’t know what Spotlight is then you are in for a treat! We are creating

Godly Heroes for the kids at MOO with our own adults! Adults come sit on our spotlight stool and answer seven simple questions. It gives the kids of Kid City a connection to the ‘big people’ at our church; then when they see you around they ‘know’ you!! And they also learn how

much you love Jesus!

If you are interested please contact Lisa Whitley at [email protected]. She has a few ‘interview’ questions for you and then she can work out a schedule. And while you are at it – give her a ‘thank you’ for volunteering for this position for the last

year! She is a hero too! Thank you Lisa!

5th Graders! Watch for a letter in the mail regarding your transition over at the R.O.C.K.! Join us in Kid City on Sunday June 20 at 9:45 or 11am to let us tell you good bye in a special way! Then June 27th

you begin attending the ROCK at 9:45!!
