Dear Parishioners, The Blue and White Flags are flying proudly. We're celebrat-ing the accomplishments of all our young people – preschool to post graduates! In a particular way, we rejoice with our grammar school families after another year of academic and spiritual formation. Congratulations to the Saint John Brebeuf School Class of 2019. The graduation ceremony took place this past Wednes-day evening with a beautiful mass of thanksgiving. Graduates, we celebrate your many accomplishments and hope that we have laid the foundation for a holy and virtuous life. “Be holy yourselves in all your conduct,” we learn in 1 Peter. The reading reminds the graduates and all of us that a life rooted in Christ, that values not only academic knowledge and proper social etiquette but, more importantly, one that recog-nizes that all we have is a gift from God that must be given away in service. Yes, time, talent and treasure to those in need. St. John Brebeuf School’s primary mission is to foster in each student a keen and inquisitive mind, a prayerful attitude cen-tered in the Sunday Eucharist, and a lifelong passion to serve, respect the elderly and infirm, and embrace the stranger, espe-cially the least among us. At the annual school awards assem-bly, I witnessed student after student who has embraced these values and lived them out in a concrete way. We encounter this spirit clearly during the Religious Educa-tion Masses and Reconciliations Services, in weekly Thursday school liturgies, and in the monthly Family Masses with our beautiful children’s choir, readers, and servers. When I look out during the homily with the young children gathered around in a semicircle in front of altar, I see a wonderful kalei-doscope of people -- the old-timers and young families, teens and young adults, people from the East and West Coasts of the USA, the Philippines, Poland, Vietnam, India, Ireland, Ger-many, Korea, Jordan, Italy, Pakistan, and Myanmar (Burma), too. Even White Sox Fans and Cubs Fans sitting together! Yes, people of various cultures and races who speak a variety of languages and embrace all types of traditions and cuisines. It's beautiful to behold. I’m grateful to the parents of the graduates for their trust in us for such an awesome task. Lastly, I appreciate the work and dedication of Dr. Mary Maloney and all our teachers and staff. Like Jesus who prayed for his disciples, we proudly send you forth with our prayers and good wishes. W szczególny sposób cieszymy się z naszymi rodzinami z gimnazjum po kolejnym roku akademickiej i duchowej formacji. Gratulacje dla Saint John Brebeuf School Class z 2019 r. Ceremonia rozdania świadectw odbyła się w ostatni środowy wieczór z piękną Mszą dziękczynną. Absolwenci, świętujemy wasze liczne osiągnięcia i mamy nadzieję, że położyliśmy fundamenty pod wasze święte i cnotliwe życie. „Bądźcie święci w całym swoim postępowaniu”, w 1 Liście Św. Piotra. Czytanie przypomina absolwentom i nam wszystkim, że nasye życie zakorzenione jest w Chrystusie, ceni nie tylko wiedzę akademicką i właściwą etykietę społeczną, ale, co ważniejsze, uznaje, że wszystko, co mamy, jest darem od Boga, który musi być oddany w służbie innym . Tak jak czas, talent i skarb dla potrzebujących. Podstawową misją szkoły St. John Brebeuf jest rozwijanie w każdym uczniu bystrego i dociekliwego umysłu, modlitewnej postawy skupionej na niedzielnej Eucharystii i życiowej pasji służenia, szacunku dla osób starszych i niedołężnych oraz poszanowania obcego, zwłaszcza najmniejszego nas. Podczas dorocznego zgromadzenia nagród szkolnych byłem świadkiem ucznia po uczniu, który przyjął te wartości i przeżył je w konkretny sposób. Duch ten wyraźnie jest odczuwany podczas Mszy i nabożeństw w ramach edukacji religijnej, w cotygodniowej liturgii szkolnej w czwartek oraz w comiesięcznych Mszach rodzinnych z naszym pięknym chórem dzieci, lektorów i ministrantów. Kiedy mam homilię z małymi dziećmi zebranymi w półkolu przed ołtarzem, widzę wspaniały kalejdoskop ludzi - starców i młodych rodzin, nastolatków i młodych dorosłych, ludzi ze wschodniego i zachodniego wybrzeża USA, Filipin, Polski, Wietnamu, Indii, Irlandii, Niemiec, Korei, Jordanii, Włoch, Pakistanu i Myanmaru (Birmy). Nawet fani White Sox i Cubs Fani siedzą razem! Tak, ludzie różnych kultur i ras, którzy mówią różnymi językami i obejmują wszystkie rodzaje tradycji i kuchni. To piękne. Jestem wdzięczny rodzicom absolwentów za zaufanie, jakim nas obdarzyli. Na koniec doceniam pracę i poświęcenie dr Mary Maloney oraz wszystkich naszych nauczycieli i pracowników. PushforConsiderationof“ReproductiveHealthAct” During the past week, we have watched supporters of the misnamed “Reproductive Health Act” propel the legislation into the end-of-session rush. The introduced version of the bill dramatically rewrites current abor-tion law, going further than Roev.Wade in stripping human rights and dignity from the unborn child with this single statement: “A fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus does not have independent rights under the laws of this State.” The fundamental premise of the bill is lawed, and no amendment or tweak to the language will change the fact that it is designed to rob the vulnerable life in the womb of any trace of human dignity and val-ue. On Memorial Day, there will be ive days left in the leg-islative session set to end on May 31. Major issues that will require bi-partisan cooperation and unity among law makers remain, such as passing a balanced budget for the health, education and safety of Illinois residents and crafting a statewide construction plan with unre-solved funding. Conversations on these matters need to take place in an atmosphere of comity and civility and any talk of abortion will only sow more divisiveness and disharmony in today’s polarized political climate. We ask that lawmakers set aside consideration of the “Reproductive Health Act,” especially since no inal form of the bill has been published, vetted through hearings or fully discussed. Proponents of the bill cite as a need for action the the potential uncertainty surrounding Roev.Wade. Yet, if the landmark case were overturned today, abortion un-fortunately would still be legal in Illinois. House Bill 40 not only authorized taxpayer-funding of abortion, but also removed so-called “trigger language” that would have reverted the state to its pre-Roe policy of allowing an abortion only to save the mother’s life. We urge all legislators to consider the common good of the state in these inal days of the session and refrain from interjecting chaos into their deliberations by con-sidering the morally- and emotionally-divisive and po-litically-charged “Reproductive Health Act.”

Archdiocese of Chicago Fr. Augustus Tolton

Events Fr. Augustus Tolton was the first Roman Catholic priest in the U.S. publically known to be African American. A for-

mer slave, he was ordained in 1886. In March 2018, historical consultants to the Vatican Congregation for Causes of Saints voted unanimously that the Cause of Fr. Tolton’s Canonization can move forward to even-tually make its way to the Holy Father’s desk.

Numerous people throughout Illinois have assisted with this Cause for Canonization. The Archdiocese of Chicago has the following upcoming events for those who want to learn about Fr. Tolton’s extraordinary life.

SJB Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Children’s Liturgy of the Word offers an experience for children to hear Scripture in words they understand and to share their own understanding of God’s word.

. We warmly invite all children in the parish to participate in the Children’s Liturgy of he Word. All parents, please encour-age your children to join when the clergy invites them to come forward to hear the good news of the Lord. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry will continue until June of 2019. We welcome all of our children ages 6-10 to participate!

St. John Brebeuf Youth Ministry worked Saturday washing cars.

Thanks to God's grace, we had beautiful weather, enthusiasm and strength to work.

We would like to thank all the donors whose finan-cial support will help cover the costs of our mission-ary trip to St. Louis "Alive in You" in July 2019.

Our youth worked with great commitment and will-ingness. They were happy to represent St. John Brebeuf Youth Ministry.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The paschal candle, blessed at the Easter Vigil, carried in procession into the darkened church, and aflame with the light of Christ to be passed hand to hand to renew our baptism, burns for the fifty days of Easter whenever we gather as Christ’s risen body. In the last fifty years, we have grown to see this candle as the sign of Christ’s enduring presence with us. Before then, it was often seen more as a kind of signpost pointing backwards to events in Christ’s life. Therefore, in some places, on the for-tieth day after Easter, in order to portray the disappearance of Jesus at the Ascension, the candle was hidden. Now we see the paschal candle as a sign of the great bap-tismal season of grace and it remains in a prominent place throughout the entire fifty days. We do know of some churches that did not hide the candle after the Ascension. In England before the Reformation, the candle was left in place for fifty days, since on Pentecost Eve there was a vigil, and the candle was used to consecrate the waters of the font. In Salisbury ca-thedral, the candle was thirty-six feet high, and in Westminster Abbey weighed over three hundred pounds.
