Reflections & Preparation for Worship O God, by Your power may we, together with all the saints, comprehend the breadth and length andheight and depth of the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that we may be filled with Your

fullness. Amen. ~ based on Ephesians 3:18-19

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

    James 5:11

Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song

The joy of my heart, and the boast of my tongue

Thy free grace alone, from the first to the lastHath won my affection and bound my soul fast

Without Thy sweet mercy, I could not live here

Sin would reduce me to utter despair

    But through Thy free goodness,

    my spirit's revived

And He that first made me still keeps me alive

Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart

Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart

Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the groundAnd weep for the praise of the mercy I've found

Great Father of mercies, Thy goodness I own

In the covenant love of Thy crucified Son

All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divineSeals mercy and pardon and righteousness mine

~ John Stocker, They Mercy, My God

"I found grace, it's all that I found

And I can breathe, breathe now"

    -U2, "Breathe"

in the end you cant simply like anybody who makes claims like those of Jesus.Either hes a wicked liar or a crazy person and you should have nothing to do with him,

or he is who he says he is and your whole life has to revolve around him

and you have to throw everything at his feet and say, Command me.~ Tim Keller,Kings Cross: The Story of the world in the Life of Jesus

Todays Scripture Lesson: Excuse Me, But Your Meanness Is ShowingJohn Ferguson, Lead Pastor

    LKE 6:1-11

6:1 On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some headsof grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, Why are you doing what is not

lawful to do on the Sabbath? 3 And Jesus answered them, Have you not read what David did when he

was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and took and ate thebread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with

him? 5 And he said to them, The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.

6 On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right

hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on

the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said tothe man with the withered hand, Comeand stand here. And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus saidto them, I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it? 10And after looking around at them all he said to him, Stretch out your hand. And he did so, and his

hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might doto Jesus.

God Feeds Us His Covenant Meal From the east and the west, from the north and the south, people will come

and take their places at the banquet in the Kingdom of God. ~ based on Luke 13:29

A Word About Participating in The Sacrament of The Lords Supper

The Lords Supper is a special family meal that Christ gave to His Bride, the Church. ForChristians, this meal is a time to receive these signs and seals of the New Covenant which Christhas established with them. Believers come to this Table to meet with their Lord and Saviour byfaith, to be renewed by Him and strengthened in their callings and mission as they eat the breadand drink the wine.

Therefore, all baptized Christians who trust in Christ alone as their Lord and Saviour, who areconnected to a church that proclaims His Gospel are invited to come to the Table.

If you are not yet a Christian, or if for whatever reason you are not prepared to share in this meal,

we would encourage you to spend this time in prayer (perhaps using one of the prayers listedbelow). Consider the invitation of Jesus, I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall nothunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirstfor my Fathers will is that everyone wholooks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day(John 6:35, 40).

We would ask that childrenwho have not yet professed belief in the Lord Jesus also refrain frompartaking until doing so. The pastor would be delighted to speak to families about what it means toparticipate in the Lords Supper.

    The Words of Institution

The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brokeit, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way

also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, do this as often

as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, youproclaim the Lords death until he comes. ~ 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

The Sacrament of The Lords Supper

Please come forward by rows to the center aisle and form a semi-circle in front of the Table toreceive the bread and the wine. When finished, place your cup at the side tables and proceed toyour seat via the outer isles. If you are unable to come forward we would be delighted to serve youat your seat.

New City Church uses wine in serving the Lords Supper. We would encourage you to take ofthe wine since it is a symbol of joy and celebration in Scripture. However, juice is also provided ifyou cannot drink wine due to health reasons or issues of conscience.

    Prayers for Those Not Communing

A Prayer Searching for the Truth: Jesus, You claim to be the way, the truth, and the life, and thatno one comes to the Father except by You. If what You claim is true, please guide me and teach

me. Open to me the reality of who You are. Grant that I might be undaunted in following You as Iconsider the reasons for doing so. Give me an understanding of You that is coherent, convincing, and leads to the eternal life that You promise. Amen.

A Prayer of Trust in the Lord Jesus: Jesus, I confess that I am more broken, flawed, and sinfulthan I had ever before dared to admit. Yet you tell me that I am more loved than I ever dared tohope, and that You accept all who turn to You in simple faith. I am doing that right now. I thank

You for taking the justice that my sins deserved when You died on the Cross. I eagerly trust Youfor the forgiveness for my sins, and I receive from You now the eternal life that You promise to allwho come to You. Amen.

A Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin: Lord Jesus, You know the battle that rages within myheart. Grant that in my battles with sin, I may see in You the fulfillment of all my needs. Give mestrength to turn from every false satisfaction to find my ultimate joy in You. Enable me to lay asidethe sin that clings so closely to me, and fill me with your Spirit to run with perseverance the raceYou have set before me, looking to You, the pioneer and champion of my faith. Amen.

A Prayer for Children (who have yet to profess faith): Jesus, the Bible tells me that you blessedkids like me. Help me to know who You are and to understand what You have done for me. Amen.

    Communion HymnsBehold the Lamb

Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away, slain for us, and we rememberThe promise made that all who come in faith find forgiveness at the cross

So we share in this bread of life, and we drink of His sacrificeAs a sign of our bonds of peace, around the table of the King

The body of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, torn for you: eat and rememberThe wounds that heal, the death that brings us life

Paid the price to make us oneSo we share in this bread of life and we drink of His sacrificeAs a sign of our bonds of love around the table of the king

The blood that cleanses every stain of sin, shed for you: drink and rememberHe drank deaths cup that all may enter in to receive the life of God

So we share in this bread of life and we drink of His sacrificeAs a sign of our bonds of grace around the table of the king

And so with thankfulness and faith we rise to respond and to rememberOur call to follow in the steps of Christ as His body here on earth

As we share in His suffering, we proclaim: Christ will come again!

And well join in the feast of heaven around the table of the King

Our Confession of Faith ~Colossians 1:15-20

Leader: Let us confess our faith

Unison: Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; For by Him all things were created,

in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,

whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authoritiesAll things were created through Him and for Him.

And He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,

that in everything he might be preeminent.

For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all thingswhether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross.

    Upcoming Series: Life Together

Life in Calgary can be busy. Toobusy. And if we are honest, it canbe a little depersonalizing. Sur-rounded by nearly 1.2 millionpeople, many Calgarians are alltoo familiar with what sociologists

call, crowded loneliness. Are wereally meant to be surrounded byso many people and still be sounconnected? Sounknown? Theshort answer is no. This is simply

just another way life is broken. Andit is supposed to be so different.

We are told that the early followers of Jesus devoted themselves to fellowship (Acts 2:42), that is, theydevoted themselves to a new way of being human that they learned from Jesusa new way of doing lifetogether. During the months of July & August, well be looking into the New Testament teaching about oneanother-ing, and well see that maybe, just maybe, we have been missing out on something vital to ourhumanity, to our Christianity, and to the mission that weve been sent on to this city.
