Summer Early Communion

mer found them meaningful and intimate.

19, and August 16).

F ISH will gather just after Assateague on Wednesday, July 1 for ice cream and tent return. We will meet at church at

6:30 to drop off tents, then move down to the “Central Parklet” for ice cream and hanging out. We will gather again in August on the 19th, 6:30 to 8:00 PM, location: TBD. Summer FISH is super casual and we encourage our upcoming 9th graders as

well as alumni to join us.

Women Wandering June 20

A ll women are invited to enjoy a few hours of casual walk-ing together in Rothrock. We will meet at the church at

8:30 AM to carpool into Rothrock Forest (park in lot just be-yond ski lodge, IN Rothrock). Our time in God’s beautiful crea-tion will include conversation and reflection. Wear comfy walk-ing shoes and dress for the weather; bring a water bottle. Con-tact Diana ([email protected]) if you have any questions or

would like to get on our mailing list for future walks.

Celebrating High School Seniors

W e will be honoring our high school gradu-ates in worship on Sunday, June 7. This is

the FISH Worship service Sunday, so maybe you and your youth will already be there. If your sen-ior is not in FISH, we hope you can come. We will invite all of the graduating seniors to come on up front so we can celebrate them during the service. Questions? Contact

Diana ([email protected]) or Kim ([email protected]).

Stay and Play Recognition Sunday

E veryone involved in the program will be recognized for their dedication and service to this program and this com-

munity at the 10:00 AM worship service on Sunday, May 31. Come early so that you can see a slide show of the current year that will be running as everyone is seated for church. Then join

us in the Social Hall after worship for cake.

Young at Heart - June 5

I n 2002, SCPC made it possible for Joel and Kristen and their family (Andy & Nathan, then 10, and Clay, 12) to experience life

and work in Togo and Ghana, West Africa. After that time, Clay and Andy returned on their own to new areas of Africa in 2010 and 2012 - Ethiopia and The Gambia - for mission work and study abroad while brother Nate opted to explore Asia instead for study abroad. By 2013, their oldest son Clay began his Peace Corps ser-vice in Burkina Faso, a small country to the north of the very areas that the family lived 11 years prior. In 2015, Andy started his Peace Corps service in Ethiopia. Please join us June 5 for a picture visit and story telling about the amazing places and people that Kristen, Joel and their sons have experienced across this beautiful and com-

plex continent.

Young at Heart (for retirees and other seniors) starts informally about 5:00 PM with fellowship over coffee and tea in the social hall. The potluck dinner starts promptly at 5:30 and the program begins between 6:15 and 6:30; the event is typically over by 7:30. Bring food to share (main dish, side dish, salad or dessert) and 2 utensils to serve it. Also bring all your own table service (plates, silverware, napkins and cups) as well as your name tag. Money collected in the donation basket is

contributed toward a new Social Hall sound system.

This will be the final Young at Heart fellowship potluck and pro-

gram of the season.

Young at Heart regulars and newcomers are encouraged to propose programs for next year. An informal committee arranges programs over the summer. Please suggest your ideas to Dave/ Dot Colton (235-2195), Sharon/ KenManno (466-6098), Rog/Jan Snyder (238-8568), Bronnie/Elliott McLaughlin 355-1041), Ron/Hope Coder

(238-8717) or to George Pedlow/Linda Morrow (466-7454).

Summer Sunday School

W e kick off the summer with a special Veggie Tales MOVIE ADVENTURE on May 31 after the children's message. This

movie will be for children ages 4 through Grade 3.

June 7 is the FISH service and there will not be a separate chil-

dren's program.

Then, beginning June 14, join us for another awesome summer adventure at SCPC with “The Great Teachings of Jesus.” Chil-dren who are 4 years old through 3rd Grade will enjoy learning about the teachings of Jesus downstairs in Rooms 10, 11, and Fireside Room. They will learn more about how Jesus Healed The Para-lyzed Man (Down Through the Roof), The Lord’s Prayer, the Great Commandment, the Feeding of the 5,000, and they will get to make and taste foods that Jesus and his friends might have eaten in Bible times. As usual, we will kick off our summer with a special movie event in our “theater

room” (Room 10).

Summer Sunday School is from approximately 10:20 - 11:05 AM each Sunday, beginning June 14 and going through mid

August.

Anyone interested in helping us should talk to Deannine Ship-man. As a reminder, all of our volunteers need to fill out Vol-unteer Application Forms that are located outside the church office. If you filled out an application form for this past year,

you do not need to fill out one again for the summer.

Stay and Play Completes Its 29th Year!

N inety children, eighty families, fourteen paid staff mem-bers, ten paid staff substitutes, nine Advisory Team

Members and MANY volunteers - just THIS year. Imagine how many lives this program has touched in the past. The spring has brought so many joys - not only is the snow finally gone, but we've had so much fun this spring with tadpoles turn-ing into frogs (they will eventually we know), caterpillars turn-ing into butterflies and children turning a whole year older! We hope you all are able to attend church on May 31 to see some of the pictures of our school year and catch a glimpse into the world of the Stay and Play preschooler. It has been an incredibly wonderful year thanks to the terrific teachers and to all of you at SCPC for realizing and sustaining this program. We've been blessed to have the opportunity to serve this com-munity with the support of SCPC. We started the school year in September with tears from the children who were not quite sure they wanted to stay here (thankfully and typically that only lasted a week). And we end the school year with tears from the teachers who have such love in their hearts for each of

these beautiful little blessings from God that have touched our lives throughout the year. We look forward to the 30th year at Stay and Play and all the many

blessings it will bring.

The Year of the Bible

T his month we look forward to hearing Daniel Falk, Profes-sor of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Penn

State, as he presents June’s TYOTB Adult Education class. This class will be held in Westminster Hall at 11:15 AM on

June 7, following the single service.

By the end of June, we will be half way through The Year of the Bible program! The effort to maintain our reading has been huge but well worth the reward of becoming more knowledge-able of the book that founds our faith. This month we will read the Old Testament books 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, and (nearly all of) 2 Chronicles. In the New Testament we continue to read

Paul’s letters to the Corinthians, Galatians, and Ephesians.

Be sure to read the excellent summary of these books provided in your TYOTB reading guide to help your understanding of

the continuity of the scriptures.

Summer is finally here with more daylight hours to perform activities that we could only dream about doing for months. Yet, as we see above, the reading list from the Bible is as im-portant as ever. Try to set aside a time each busy day to stay connected and to keep on track to complete your Year of the

Bible reading goal.

That Important First Impression Martha Trout, Membership and Program Associate

I magine you are a first time visitor to the SCPC and you walk in the Parking Lot entrance on a Sunday morning …. and

there was no one at the door to greet you. Would you know where to go to get to the Sanctuary? Would you have a good first impression? Would you turn around and leave because it

feels “unfriendly” and “unwelcoming”?

If you came in the Fraser Street entrance you would be handed a bulletin by a friendly Deacon. This would definitely give you a better feeling, but wouldn’t it have been even better if some-one had been right there at the door to tell you how nice it was

to see you and wished you a good morning?

If you came in the Tower entrance, wouldn’t it be a bit confusing

as to which door you use to get into the Sanctuary for worship?

If you come back for a second, third, or fourth time, would you wonder if there is anyone here on Sunday mornings who no-tices you are here before you get to the Welcome Desk? What are your impressions of SCPC and our congregation? Do you tell your friends how welcoming and friendly the folks at the Presbyterian Church are, or do you think there is no reason

why you would return?

Now imagine that you are a first time visitor and you walk in the Parking Lot entrance on a Sunday morning and there is a friendly person or family there with a warm smile, a firm hand-shake and a “good morning, we are so glad you are here!” Now what is your first impression? And when you return the next Sunday, and the Sunday after that, there are different peo-ple at the door – all with big smiles and “good mornings” to greet you. Wouldn’t you be more likely to think this is a place where people care that you are here and a place you can partici-

pate in ministry?

The Membership Ministry Unit hopes to provide this latter experience for first time visitors, returning visitors and all of our members on Sunday mornings. But we can’t do it without YOU – members and friends who volunteer to greet at the en-trances. It’s such an easy way to participate. You will have the chance to meet new folks and greet old friends, and you will

leave with a good feeling, too.

Please consider being a Sunday morning greeter. You can sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway between the CE Build-ing and the Sanctuary or you can go to our website, www.scpresby.org and go to the “worship service greeters” quick link at the top right of the home page. Or you can con-tact Anita Thies (237-9466) and she will help you. Sign up for several Sundays and be that familiar face to someone coming through the doors. All it takes is your smile and a handshake –

and it can make such a big difference to someone who needs it.

That first impression is so very important. It paves the way for someone to hear the message from the pulpit during worship. As much as a bad impression can be lasting, so can a good im-

pression. At SCPC let’s strive to be the good impression.

Gretchen Macht joins us by Letter of Transfer from Abington Presbyterian Church in Abington, PA. Gretchen and her husband, Kyle, met in

High School in Abington, both attended Penn State Uni-versity, and then decided to marry. Gretchen received her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, where she will become a full-time Lecturer in the Fall, and is currently a Postdoc-toral Scholar in Architectural Engineering. Kyle (not joining at this time) studied Architectural Engineering and is now working on a Master’s Degree in Architecture. He has a particular interest and expertise in energy efficient/green building and residential construction. At her church in Abington, Gretchen sang in the church choir, served as a Youth Deacon, and participated in missionary work. She has long sought a replacement for her home church and is happy to have found a new church home here at SCPC – they appreciate the community outreach and the beautiful worship services. She looks forward to exposing their 10 month old daughter, Evalyn, to a similar church experience. The Macht's enjoy spending time together outdoors, hiking, and gardening.

FISH in the Final Stretch

J une brings a flurry of activity to finish our program year. On Sunday, June 7th, FISH leads worship. We sing, share

scripture, share our stories, lead prayer, offer announcements and celebrate with the congregation. It is something that we all look forward to doing together. And on Sunday, June 21st, FISH heads out to Assateague Island (national seashore on the coast of Maryland) for our end of the year retreat. We spend the week in a tent city on the beach playing together, doing work together in small group, and syncing up with the rhythms of the ocean and one another. We love finishing our year this

way and welcome your prayers of shared celebration.

125th Anniversary Pictorial Directory

W e are in the process of designing a new pictorial direc-tory! We are about halfway through our photography

dates but there is still time to get your portrait taken. We want YOU to be a part of it. If you haven’t already scheduled your portrait session, please visit our website, www.scpresby.org, or call Sue Powers (234-0628) to make your appointment. Re-maining dates are June 9-13 and June 25-27. We want as many families as possible to be included, so please make your ap-

pointment now.

Each family will receive a complimentary 8x10 portrait and a free State College Presbyterian Church Pictorial directory just for participating. Please note that if you want to receive a copy of the Directory, you need to have your portrait taken (special

arrangements can be made for homebound folks).

We would also like to include all church affiliated active duty military persons in the directory. Let us know if you have a family member (church member) in the military so we can ar-

range to have a picture included.

We also want lots of candid photos of groups, events, and ac-tivities – you may submit photos to Jerry Sawyer no later than June 10th. Family and folks unable to attend any of the pho-tography sessions may submit a photo to Jerry on or before June 10th to be included in the directory. If you would like to obtain a $5 coupon towards your photo package bring a canned

food item for the Food Bank to your photo session.

Please help us make this a successful event by signing up now. In the meantime start looking for that perfect photo outfit, and

by all means, keep exercising your beautiful smile!

God’s Green Moment

M uch of the fossil fuel energy used to produce food is consumed through the transportation of food from far

distances. We can take better care of God’s earth by eating more locally and seasonally. Now is the perfect time to get started! You can get to know your local farmers and their prod-ucts by visiting the great local farmer’s markets. Make it part of your week to visit the one nearest you on the day it is of-fered. Or visit a different market each week and get to know which best fits your food needs. Grab a food item you’ve never cooked with before and give it a try. Information about the 7 (!) Centre County Farmers Markets is listed here: h t t p: / / www. vi s i t pen n s t a t e . or g /calendar/cen tr e-coun ty- farmers-

markets.php.

At the end of the summer, Centre County PASA (PA Assoc. of Sustain-able Agriculture) Farm Tour happens on August 10 from noon – 5:30 PM. What a great way to enjoy our area and learn more about the food you are eat-ing! Check this out – and get it on your calendar if you’re in town that week. http://www.pasafarming.org/events/pasa-events/centre-co-farm-tour . And, when you feel like enjoying a meal out, pick one of the great locally owned restaurants that features local

ingredients.

Another thing we can do during sum-mer is consider how we do our traveling. Take a look at these great ideas for making your summer travel more earth-friendly:

Sabbath Away for June

A ll are invited to Sabbath Away, Sunday afternoon June 28, 3:00 - 6:00 PM at the McCann School of Art in Pe-

tersburg (4144 Miller Road, 20 minutes from the church). The afternoon will provide time for personal reflection, a chance to get acquainted with others through a small group experience (or further time on your own), the option to participate in an art activity, music, prayer, and a simple meal. Sabbath Away is a new monthly WheelHouse offering intended to deepen faith and build community. If you have questions or would like to sign up, please contact the church office. All ages are welcome and you’re encouraged to bring a friend. There is no childcare, but the art offering will be appropriate for grade school (& older) and parent supervised younger children. Our June theme is "Wild and Precious." Join us as we explore what it means to

live fully into our wild and precious lives.

Please contact the church office if you are interested in attend-ing ([email protected] or 814/238-2422). Contact Joel

Blunk or Kim Hunziker if you have questions.

Vol. LVI Number 6

Visitation Deacons Visitation Deacons are members of the congregation who are specially ordained and installed for the purpose of calling on shut-ins. Every month each Deacon visits one or more of our members who are confined to their homes, living in retirement communities, or nursing homes, or limited in their ability to be a part of the life of the congregation. If you know someone who would appreciate such a visit, talk with Dean Lindsey or one of the Visitation Deacons.
