Weekly Reflection June 14, 2020
Corpus Christi
Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
There it sat, looking lonely among the taller offerings in the
supermarket Easter flower section. A tricolor hyacinth in
the colors of Lent and Easter: purple, pink, and white. I
picked it up to grace the room where I pray. There I was
delighted by the plant’s unique fragrance. However it soon
gave in to that habit of hyacinths to lean down one way or
another. But what struck me this time was the fact that the
plant seemed to lean toward the light coming from the win-
dow. It was yearning for the sun. Yearning for the sun.
Think about that. All you have to do is change the lone
vowel in “sun” from “u” to “o” and you have the lifelong
motivation of a Christian: “Yearning for the Son.” The Son
of God, Our risen Lord Jesus Christ.
The wonderful truth that we can see and touch the very
Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ in the Holy Eu-
charist fulfills that yearning. Some day, when we get to see
the Lord face to face, yearning will evaporate. In the mean-
time we have this special feast of “Corpus Christi,” the
Body of Christ, to celebrate this greatest treasure of our
Church.
The feast originated in 1246 when Robert de Torote, bishop
of Liège, ordered the festival celebrated in his diocese. He
was persuaded to initiate the feast by St. Juliana, prioress of
Mont Cornillon near Liège, who had experienced a vision. It
did not spread until 1261, when Jacques Pantaléon, formerly
archdeacon of Liège, became pope as Urban IV. In 1264 he
ordered the whole church to observe the feast. Urban’s order
was confirmed by Pope Clement V at the Council of Vienne
in 1311–12. By the mid-14th century the festival was gener-
ally accepted, and in the 15th century it became, in effect,
one of the principal feasts of the Church.
By its calendar placement, this feast gives us the occasion to
ponder Christ’s gift to us of Himself at the Last Supper. On
Holy Thursday, the pending Passion of Our Lord’s death
hung in the air with sober sadness over that Upper Room.
On that same evening, in this strange unforgettable year, we
lived under the pressure of a mandate to stay home. A virus
took away our physical participation. Our yearning for the
Lord intensified, and we all felt it.
All of our great Church saints had exemplary faith in
Christ’s gift of Himself in this sacrament. They had the
same yearning for the Son of God that we do. And like that
little hyacinth plant leaning toward the light-filled window,
we also lean toward the One Person who fills our hearts and
souls with the Light of Hope. As an anonymous writer put
it: “Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and
achieves the impossible.”
Junípero Serra, Priest
No person had more influence on the settlement of California
than Padre Junípero Serra. He was born Miguel José Serra to
parents of humble means, living in Petra on the Mediterranean
island of Majorca. His early education took place on the island
at the Franciscan convent of San Bernardino. Miguel was or-
dained in 1737, and took the name Junípero at that time. In the
same year, he was named a professor of philosophy at the uni-
versity in Palma, Spain as well as to other posts. He could have
worked at this the rest of his life, but since he was a boy,
Junípero Serra had dreamed of becoming a missionary in the
New World. He accepted an appointment to help establish the
Church in Mexico and the United States and spent the rest of his
life doing so with great vigor and many good results.
Junípero Serra undertook a bold journey in coming to the New
World. Our physical travels may not be as far-reaching as Ser-
ra’s, but we are all on a spiritual journey whose course can often
be as dramatic. We, too, can hold steadfast to our goal of reach-
ing God’s Kingdom.
The process of sainthood for Junípero Serra was begun in 1934
and has continued with his beatification in 1988. He is honored
by an optional memorial on July. 1.
Padre Serra's message today: Junípero Ser ra under took a
bold journey in coming to the New World. Our physical travels
may not be as far-reaching as Serra’s, but we are all on a spiritu-
al journey whose course can often be as dramatic. We, too, can
hold steadfast to our goal of reaching God’s Kingdom.
The Eucharist and Unity
Imagine a person who receives Communion, accepts the
Host when the priest says, "The Body of Christ," says
"Amen," and then breaks off a piece, hands it back, and
says, "Except this piece, Father!" This is what the person
who rejects other people may as well do. In receiving
Christ, we are to receive the whole Christ, in all his mem-
bers, our brothers and sisters, whether convenient or incon-
venient, wanted or unwanted, born or unborn. As St. John
remarks, Christ was to die "to gather into one all the scat-
tered children of God." Sin scatters. Christ unites. The word
"diabolical" means "to split asunder." Christ came "to de-
stroy the works of the devil" (1Jn.3:8). The Eucharist
builds up the human family in Christ who says, "Come to
me, feed on My Body, become My Body." Abortion, in a
reverse dynamic, says, "Go away! We have no room for
you, no time for you, no desire for you, no responsibility
for you. Get out of our way!" Abortion attacks the unity of
the human family by splitting asunder the most fundamental
relationship between any two persons: mother and child.
The Eucharist, as a Sacrament of Unity, reverses the dynam-
ic of abortion.

Theme: The Euchar ist is the center of our faith.
Breaking Open the Word Suggested text for faith sharing: Today’s Second Reading,
from St. Paul
Step One: Listen to the Word As you listen to the words of this challenging section of Paul’s
letter to the Corinthians, what catches your ear? What single
word or phrase lingers now in your memory?
Step Two: Look into Your Life Question for Children: How does receiving Holy Commun-
ion change how you treat those around you?
Question for Youth: Jesus tells us that through the Eucha-
rist we will remain in him and he is us. How does the Eucharist
keep you in relationship with Jesus?
Question for Adults: Share one way that the Euchar ist con-
nects us as “one body” – how does it change the way we relate
to each other?
