T o d a y i s F l a g D a y ! Surprisingly to many, there are no regulations of any kind governing the display of flags in Roman Catholic churches. Neither the Code of Canon Law nor the liturgical books of the Roman rite comment on this practice. As a result, the question of whether and how to display the American flag in a Catholic church is left up to the judgment of the diocesan bishop, who in turn often delegates this to the discretion of the pastor.

The origin of the display of the American flag in many parishes in the United States appears have its origins in the offering of prayers for those who served during the Second World War (1941-1945). At that time, many bishops and pastors provided a book of remembrance near

the American flag, requesting prayers for loved ones—especially those serving their country in the armed forces—as a way of keeping before the attention of the faithful the needs of military families. This practice has since been confirmed in many places during the Korean, Vietnam, and Iraqi conflicts.

The Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy has in the past encouraged pastors not to place the flag within the sanctuary itself, in order to reserve that space for the altar, the ambo, the presidential chair, and the tabernacle. Instead, the suggestion has been made that the American flag be placed outside the sanctuary, or in the vestibule of the church together with a book of prayer requests. It remains, however, for the diocesan bishop to determine regulations in this matter.

T h e S o c i a l C o n c e r n s M i n i s t r y thanks everyone who has supported the OLA Food Pantry. Your generous donations have helped greatly in providing food bags. For the month of April: 281 families (1,318 individuals) and in May: 244 families (1,160 individuals). OLA students conducted a food drive before the school year ended and those who received the Sacrament of Confirmation donated cereal.

Summer is here and many will be taking vacations, taking more time for relaxing or leisure activities -- family time. The Food Pantry and its volunteers, however, don't slow down during the summer; the need is always there, but the contributory resources are fewer, so p l e a s e s u p p o r t t h e F o o d P a n t r y o v e r t h e s u m m e r m o n t h s . FACT OF FAITH THINGS YOU WON’T SEE AT A CATHOLIC WEDDING

by Rev. Larry Rice, CSP

There are few events in life that are as steeped in tradition as a wedding. And the traditions surrounding weddings come to us through our families, our friends, our culture, and our religious traditions. But every religious tradition handles weddings differently, and some of the things that people expect to see and hear, are often not part of the Catholic way of celebrating weddings.

For example, in some traditions, at the conclusion of the procession into the church, the presiding minister may ask, “Who gives this woman to be married?” And the father of the bride will be expected to respond that he, or he and his wife, do. At Catholic weddings, it’s presumed that the bride—and the groom for that matter—give themselves to each other.

If you’ve ever seen a wedding on a television series, you’re probably familiar with the dramatic possibilities that arise when the minister asks, “If anyone knows any reason why these two should not be wed, let him speak now, or forever hold his peace.” Well, we Catholics don’t do that. In many places, notices of upcoming weddings are published, allowing anyone with objections to come forward before the couple gets to the altar.

Another touching moment in most TV weddings is the phrase, “With this ring, I thee wed.” For us Catholics, the moment of the marriage is the exchange of consent, and the speaking of the vows. The ring is a symbol of the union that has already taken place. We bless wedding rings, and they are exchanged with the phrase, “Take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Another thing we don’t say at Catholic weddings is “I now pronounce you man and wife.” We believe that the couple becomes husband and wife not because the minister declares them to be such, but because they have given their consent and made their vows to each other. The function of the priest or deacon is to preside and witness these vows, not to make the marriage happen.

Through all of the ceremony, the emphasis is on what the bride and groom do, and not on anyone else. This celebration of love and unity mirrors the love of God for his people, and should inspire all of us to be more loving, more committed people.

11th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: BELOVED AND GROWING

© Clare Colella

The care, compassion and tenderness in this Sunday’s readings are almost

overwhelming. That the least and weak of God’s creation are cherished is not only a belief, but an

encouragement and reassurance for each of us that our God is attentive and caring for us.

The first reading from Ezekiel reminds us that the Lord has plans we might not understand. A tender shoot – the early hope – becomes a trustworthy tree. As parents, catechists or teachers, we do our best to plant seeds of faith, of responsibility and accountability in our family members and students. We know that when we have done our best, the rest is, truly, beyond us and is in God’s hands. Even Jesus explained “everything” to his disciples, trusting, I am sure, that when the time was right, they would come to understand.

The second reading from the letter to the Corinthians tells us, again, that we are accountable for our choices and actions, for we are called to act -- “to walk” -- by faith. Our faith tells us that God is always with us, that our God is a God of mercy and love, as well as a just and compassionate God. Our Father is truly a gardener of souls!

As we hear in Mark’s Gospel, the mustard seed, “the smallest of all seeds” will flourish with God’s grace and help. We can use our sight and insight to find the good in everything and everyone we encounter. That, in itself, is an act of faith, often. The seed of God’s love has been offered to every person – and creation abounds with signs of God’s presence and goodness.

During this season of Ordinary Time let us make of our lives a true witness to the Real Presence in the Eucharist and its nourishment for our faith and lives so that we may be the Body of Christ in the world each and every day. In that way we will be able to truly help bring about the kingdom – the reign of God on earth.
