Super Giant Here we are, on a “mote of suspended dust in a sunbeam,” as Carl Sagan famously put it. And if we’re going to hurdle through space on this rock, an incomprehensible distance from the nearest Supergiant star, making beer from things that miraculously grow from the ground, we’re going to make it count. This beer is all of us—bright, golden, slightly sweet, and amused by existence.

First Light The first light of each day is fresh start. A reset. Whether you’re waking up in the wilderness. Or laboring in a re-purposed light bulb factory in Northeast Minneapolis, creat-ing a new take on the polarizing IPA. Both offer a different perspective. But only one has a friendly handshake’s worth of dank hops to satisfy IPA lovers, while being fruity and clean enough to make any beer drinker see the style in a new light.

Chrono Culture 001 The very first in our Chrono Culture series. 225 pounds of Minnesota-native elderberries give this kettle sour its herbal, earthy notes. A sprinkling of fruity Bravo hops before fermentation complement the berry’s subtle flavor. While an original lactobacillus culture of our brewer’s design, gives 001 its clean, tart finish.

Amber Ale Alt. The name of this beer style comes from the German word “alt” meaning “old”. This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales.

Icy Bay IPA Made from glacier-fed water and a blend of Cascade, Bravo, Calypso, Summit and Apollo hops and premium two-row pale and specialty malts.

Summer Ale Based on the traditional style of Kölsch beer brewed in Cologne, Germany

White Ale Alaskan White Ale is based on a Belgian-style witbier, literally translated to “white beer.”

Raspberry Wheat With nearly one pound of real fruit per gallon, Alaskan Raspberry Wheat has the inviting aroma of fresh-picked raspberries and an enticing red hue. The flavor of the raspberries lends a tartness that balances the full-bodied wheat profile and malt sweetness. Bigger than most traditional fruit beers, Alaskan Raspberry Wheat adds an extra kick to its dry and effervescent finish.

Daddy’s Honey Pot Our award winning Honey Saison gives you a wonderful honey nose with spice notes and a smooth finish

Naked Hop Party 9 lbs of hops makes this juicy West Coast IPA have a strong tangerine nose and a lasting, dry grapefruit finish.

Speedy’s Happy Pilz Crisp and light, this Premium Czech Pilsner provides subtle peach and pear notes with a clean finish

Dark Territory Dark territory is a term used in the North American railroad industry to de-scribe a section of running track not controlled by signals or traffic control. Train movements in dark territory were previously handled by timetable and train order operation but now re-placed with train dispatchers managing train movements directly. The brew house is adjacent to BNSF & CP train and railroads that run throughout Minneapolis, hence the appropriateness of this craft beer brewed in our facility. A rich and complex stout composed of smooth, sweet and dark tones without being overpowering. It has forefront aromas of chocolate, roasted dark malts. A slight scent of hop bitterness and coconut with resounding velvet, smooth and roasted flavor gives this an opulent finish on the palate. It is brewed with a blend of 6 dif-ferent malt, flaked oats, milk sugar, toasted raw unsweetened coconut and cocoa nibs. The fermenter is loaded with additional coconut to balance the flavor profile. Drink this with lower carbonation to enjoy the full bodied flavor.

NE Nectar This is a pale, lighter bodied ale that is smooth, clean and refreshing. Additions of honey give this a sweeter character as it is fermented clean. It is brewed with 3 different malts and copious amounts of honey added at the end of the batch. Enjoy this year round.

California Street IPA Our California Street IPA is primarily a single hop IPA brewed with El Dorado hops. These hops produce the aroma of tropical fruit and the flavors of pears and stone fruit. The late addition of a bittering hop provides a backbone balance to the flavor. It has a light golden color.

PilsNEr The Czech Pilsner meets Northeast Minneapolis; A malt forward Pilsner that is brewed with Saaz hops and traditional yeast to give you a refreshing and highly drink-able beer. At 35 IBUs there is plenty of hop character from the Saaz, and it finishes with a nice hop aroma.

Mary Ann A German-style lager brewed with generous amounts of freshly grated ginger. Re-freshing and spicy. Delicious and bold. A perfect companion for getting stranded on your own personal island, because you can’t have Mary Ann without ginger.

Hidden Beach American IPA brewed with Golden Promise malt, Centennial and Citra hops.

Gateway Park A pre-prohibition lager brewed with ingredients commonly used in this same style beer over a hundred years ago; six-row barley, flaked corn and Cluster hops. This beer pays homage to the Gateway District or as it was known back then, Bridge Square, in Min-neapolis. One of the key buildings in the Gateway District was the Metropolitan Building, which was sadly demolished in the 1960’s due to urban renewal

Splintered Sunlight An American Wheat Ale meant to quench your thirst for the summer. Brewed with Pils and red wheat and hopped with Saaz, Sorachi Ace and dry hopped with Hal-lertau Blanc. Available on draft only!

Unfiltered Sculpin Our Unfiltered Sculpin IPA packs extra hops into every sip, enhancing the classic Sculpin notes of fresh apricot, peach, mango and lemon with a slight haze and less bitterness. Freshness is key to every beer, but especially true for this extra-hopped IPA—store cold and drink soon.

Sea Rose Our Sea Rose tart cherry wheat ale is a fresh take on fruit beers. Originally con-ceived during an employee-led R&D brew, it’s one of our most imaginative recipes yet. The American wheat style is light and clean, while fresh cherry juice adds a soft coral color and fruity nose that gives way to a dry, slightly tart finish. It’s approachable, yet unexpected—ex-actly what we love to brew.

Grapefruit Sculpin Our Grapefruit Sculpin is the latest take on our signature IPA. Some may say there are few ways to improve Sculpin’s unique flavor, but the tart freshness of grapefruit perfectly complements our IPA’s citrusy hop character. Grapefruit’s a winter fruit, but this easy-drinking ale tastes like summer.

Manta Ray We’ve developed many IPA recipes in our R&D program, but right from the tank, our Manta Ray Double IPA was a winner. Aromas of fresh, citrusy tangerine, melon and light pine leap from the beer and linger over a smooth finish. Like its namesake, this brew can sneak up on you … a big beer without a bite.

Bonito Our Bonito blonde ale is inspired by our perma-sunny days. This brew draws you in with its golden color and soft malt character, while the light mouthfeel and dry finish keeps you coming back. And what would set a San Diego blonde apart? A subtle hint of hops, naturally.

Wild Brunette Our signature beer at Barley John’s. Our Brown Ale is brewed with Minnesota grown Wild Rice to provide a unique nuttiness along with vanilla overtones.

6 Knot IPA Strong malt backbone with a present hop character, not as citrus and hoppy as the American IPA counterpart, our IPA celebrates the more subtle British presenta-tion of the style.

Mango Double Pale Ale A double pale ale with moderate malt and hop profile flavored with mangos to give a refreshing hot weather quencher.

Crisp A crisp and refreshing fruit-forward cider that mixes the sweetness of culinary apples with a subtle dryness from bittersweet apples for a balanced taste.

Easy Apple A slightly less sweet, refreshing, and EASY to drink hard cider.

Orchard’s Edge: Old Fashioned The Old Fashioned is deep gold in color and made with a blend of American apples like Gala and Fuji. It is then aged on oak with dried tart cherries, California grown navel orange peel, and charred bourbon barrel staves. The cider has a deli-cate citrus aroma with hints of vanilla and bourbon flavor from the wood aging process. The Old Fashioned has lasting tannins and a full, round mouthfeel.

Orchard’s Edge: Knotty Pear made with juice from a blend of culinary pears, including Bartlett, Doyenne de Comice, Bosc and D’Anjou, along with apples grown in the US. This bright, shiny golden cider leads with ripe apple, baked pear aromas and spicy, herbal hints from the cardamom. The pears also give the cider a subtle spiced essence along with notes of citrus and mint. Aged on White American oak, this cider has a pleasant, dry finish

Goosetown A refreshingly light and citrusy tartness greets your palate, backed by a bready, wheat malt character and a touch of Coriander and slight salt finish.

Firebrick Reddish-Amber hue. Carries a mild, pleasant maltiness with subtle sweetness and a light hoppy finish. A very drinkable, year round beer.

Schell Shocked Grapefruit Radler a clear, golden radler style beer. It’s light, crisp body combines mild malt flavor, hop bitterness and a sensational citrus essence. Ideal for those sun-kissed afternoons, this invigorating blend provides the ultimate in summer refreshment.

100 Bad Weather Brewing Company414 W. 7th Street Saint Paul, MN 55102 — www.badweatherbrewery.com

Hopcromancer IPA Biscuit like malt character with lots of juicy hops. Generously hopped throughout the boil, and dry hopped twice for extra depth of hop aroma. Pineapple, citrus, melon, and just a hint of pine. Pours gold with a thick white head.

Alt Assistant Brewer Ian Cambell’s first recipe formulation at Bad Weather! Brewed in the “sticke”-style of Düsseldorf altbier (“sticke” means “secret”) using 100% German malt and hops, Alt Facts pours a brilliant copper and features a robust malt character of caramel and toasted bread aromas, balanced by a firm hop bitterness and flavor reminiscent of fresh dried herbs and citrus rind, with hints of pipe tobacco, and a crisp finish.

Dortmunder From the Dortmund industrial region of Germany, this style was created for the hard working class citizens that live there. Dortmunder Export is somewhat of a cross between the Pilsner malt sweetness of a Helles, the spicy Saaz hop aroma of a Bohemian Pilsner, and the firm bitterness of a German Pilsner. We use Tettnang hops for bittering, Hallertau Mit-telfruh hops for flavor, and Saaz hops for aroma. High mineral water adjustments bring out the malt and hop character known of this style. Pours deep gold with a persistent white head

Ghostface Fatha Dark Fatha’s 2016 version is aged in bourbon and rum barrels for a very distinctive hybrid flavor. Big and booming, yet, with a delicately light soul, dark fatha is a deep, rich and velvety strong stout like drinking a whiskey soaked chocolate cake with a lingering burn.

Whitty Blonde dry-hopped with amarillo and bursting with notes of tangerine, apricot, white peach, red grapefruit, spice, and luscious rising bread. A silky, soothing, and sating velvet-gloved brain massage.

Giga Lupin hops, hops, and more hops. Notes of sweet malt, lychee, ripe mango, and papaya, with citrus and dankness to keep you honest, and enough smooth alcohol to perform most back alley surgeries.

Ambiguity ambiguity is an obscure and thoroughly unique sour ale from Lichtenhain in the green heart of Germany. Lactobacillus sourness, gobsmacking smoke and tasty wheaty good-ness create an ethereal combination that is rich, complex and refreshing. 1 Part smoky. 1 Part sour. 4 Parts amazing—just like your Oma!

123 Bent Paddle Brewing Company1912 W. Michigan Street, Duluth, MN 55806 — www.bentpaddlebrewing.com

Bent Hop An unexpected visual bend to an American India Pale Ale, this style is one that stands out in a crowd, or if you’re more like us … enjoyed at a campsite—with no crowd. This non-traditional IPA is golden in color with an enormous floral/citrus hop aroma and a support-ing malt profile.

Cold Pressed Black Ale Brewed to be smooth, chocolatey, semi-roasted ale that bridges the islands of porter and stout. And if you aren’t a fan of bridges, there’s always the canoe. This Black Ale drinks like a porter but is opaque like a stout. Brewed with a generous amount of oats to round out the flavor. Our Bent Paddle Black infused with fresh Duluth Coffee Co. “Crazy Juice” cold press coffee … top o’ the morning to ya!

Kanu Kanu Session Pale Ale Pays homage to that nostalgic entry point into paddling life. Bril-liant hop expression with a structural malt “hull”, this session pale is designed to ride along in perfect harmony.

Venture Pils This craft lager harmonizes noble hops and premium malts found in North America and Europe. We did the traveling to save you the paddling. Brewed with pris-tine Lake Superior water, this straw colored pilsener takes on characteristics of Bohemia, Northern Germany with a touch of American inventiveness. Refreshingly crisp with a gentle floral hop aroma.

14° ESB Our well rounded approach to the classic British Ale. There’s middle of the road, and there’s middle of the river. And if there’s one thing that’s important in the middle of the river … it’s balance. Our ESB is incredibly well balanced with a slight toasted malt flavor, traditional British hop accents with just a hint of pine and citrus from the unexpected Amarillo / Ahtanum dry-hop.

Two Hearted Ale Brewed with 100% Centennial hops from the Pacific Northwest and named after the Two Hearted River in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, this IPA is bursting with hop aro-mas ranging from pine to grapefruit. Perfectly balanced with a malt backbone and combined with the signature fruity aromas of Bell’s house yeast, this beer is remarkably drinkable and well suited for adventures everywhere.

Mars Released initially in August, 2014 as the first beer in the Bell’s Planets Series, Mars (The Bringer of War) is a double IPA with a complex hop character and a malty backbone. Notes of tropical fruit, citrus, pine, lemon, lime and pineapple are all present in both the aroma and flavor. Hopped at a ratio of about 3.4 pounds of hops per barrel.

Oberon is a wheat ale fermented with our signature house ale yeast, mixing a spicy hop char-acter with mildly fruity aromas. The addition of wheat malt lends a smooth mouthfeel, making it a classic summer beer. Made with only 4 ingredients, and without the use of any spices or fruit, Oberon is the color and scent of sunny afternoon.

Oarsman First brewed in 2008 at our original brewery in downtown Kalamazoo, Oarsman Ale grew out of our desire to explore the tradition of session beers and to create a unique, flavorful experience for everyone, no matter what the occasion. Tart and refreshing, this sessionable, bright Wheat Ale exudes citrus and lemony aromas from Cascade hops and trades sour inten-sity for finesse.

Pyro An American twist on an English bitter, this light fruity beer is a drink that can be enjoyed at any time! We substitute the traditional English flavor with our own unique blend of American hops. Note the initial taste of orange followed by just a hint of grapefruit. Three years in the making, our APA stands strong against any other APA on the market. It’s a beer that looks good and delivers a crisp beer taste, enough said!

Roasted We love coffee... we love beer... How could it go wrong? We start with a single-hopped strong ale and blend it with cold brewed coffee to create a smooth balance of bitter and sweet with hints of caramel

Raj-Agni This adapted version of the historical English style offers a balanced bitterness with a slight hint of blackstrap molasses. Using exclusively Cluster hops allows us to bring forth both spicy and floral aromas to compliment the mix between earthy flavors and sweet fruits

Parched The citrus notes of our all American hops combined with the lime of our shandy will have you salsa dancing in no time. Our fans state that “Parched” taste like summer. Not too sweet with a nice tart that balances with the hops like they were meant to be together.

It’s also the only wingman you’ll need in the summer sun when the living is easy and the lakes are calling.

Boston Lager Bold, rich and complex. The distinctive balance of spicy, complex hops, slightly sweet roast malts, and smooth finish, are what give this full-flavored taste. The unmistakable character of this brew began as our original and became an American original.

Rebel Juiced IPA with a tropical twist of mango and citrusy hops

Summer Ale This flavorful American wheat ale simply says summer, with its hazy golden color and bright character. The crisp citrus of Noble hops, wheat malt, and lemon peel combine with the subtle peppery spice of Grains of Paradise for just the right kick. A lively, flavorful, and utterly refreshing brew.

Porch Rocket Radler By mixing beer & tart sparkling lemonade, German cyclists (called Ra-dlers) helped inspire a crisp, refreshing drink perfect for long hot days. With that inspiration, we used a blend of lemons to capture that fresh-squeezed lemon taste, & combined it with a golden Helles lager creating a sweet, tangy & thoroughly refreshing brew.

American Kolsch Using European pilsner malt and malted wheat as a base, American Kolsch is bittered with Magnum hops and features herbal, citrusy and spicy notes from end of boil additions of Tradition, Saaz and Saphir. Pouring golden in color, the aroma is of bready malt punctuated by a slightly minty hop character. With a light to medium mouthfeel, American Kolsch delivers a honey-like malt sweetness that gives way to a crisp clean finish with a touch of lingering citrus/herbal hop flavor.

Ginger Lemon Radler Ginger Lemon Radler is a zesty, refreshing take on the tradition of mixing beer with soda or lemonade to create a light, thirst-quenching beverage ideal for warm weather. Radler (literally “cyclist,”) takes its name from active German sportsmen of a hundred years ago, but our version tastes just as good even if you do nothing more strenuous than lifting it to your lips.

Tropical Pale Ale Inspired by our collaboration with Florida’s famed Cigar City Brewing, Tropical Pale Ale marries our passion for balanced pale ales with the bright refreshing flavors of grapefruit and passion fruit accented by juicy, citrusy hops. Pack your bags and bring your taste buds.

Kamikaze Kaleidoscope Kamikaze Kaleidoscope appears hazy straw in color with a bright white head thanks to the healthy amount of wheat in this friendly summer Wit, making it very approachable. Sweet wheat and citrus aromas come to the scene next with a slight hint of Wit yeast that makes this such a unique and drinkable beer. Subtle flavors of Orange and Lemon lace in nicely with a big wheat mouthfeel and a slight tartness thanks to the Wit yeast used in this beer. Finishing dry and clean, this beer will definitely be on your list of summer beers to crush from now on.

Smells Like a Safety Meeting S.L.A.S.M. is our most Aromatic IPA. This India Pale Ale is very reminiscent of the hop’s cousin in the Mulberry family. Lots of hop aroma with just the right amount of bitterness as we like to keep balance around here. Between the secret blend of the most DANK hops we can get our hands on and a “more than healthy” dose of double dry hop-ping, this beer can be announced to the nose from across the room that someone is definitely having a Safety Meeting.

Raspberry Ale A lot of people have asked us “why are there Bee’s on the label?” Well, we don’t really have an answer for you other than they just look cool. This is a light bodied easy drinking ale. We only use real raspberries so the flavor is very mild fruit and balanced, not what you would expect from a “fruit” beer. The way we see it is we’re brewers so lets make good beer, not some fruity carbonated malt beverage.

17 7 Pale Ale 17 7 is named after our address in downtown Two Harbors, which is also home to our taproom that overlooks Lake Superior. 17 7 was born out of necessity while brewing on our original 93-gallon system in Castle Danger.

Cream Ale Sitting around the kitchen table during our start-up days, the need for a session-able beer became clear. Our first intern actually came up with the idea to brew a cream ale, so we started designing the recipe. As with all Castle Danger beers, we start with a flavor profile, then expand upon it to create something unique. Castle Cream is our version of a cream ale. Deep gold in color, it has a soft malty aroma, slightly sweet creamy texture with a balanced bitterness, while finishing smooth and clean.

Ode IPA Ode IPA is a culmination of our love of hops and the many variations of India Pale Ales we have brewed through the years. This beer shows how we like to use hops where flavor and aroma are at the forefront, ending with medium bitterness. Citra, Azacca, Amarillo and Centennial hops lend bright citrus and tropical fruit in flavor and aroma. It is an Ode to all the great IPAs already out there, a true marriage of hops and love. Something new, something borrowed, something Ode.

Summer Crush Summer Crush is a beer brewed just for summer. It has a pleasant lemon flavor and aroma from using Sorachi Ace hops, which is a defining characteristic of this Japa-nese hop variety. The malted barley lends a slightly sweet, biscuity backbone. Summer crush is a sessionable beer, and our take on a Shandy without being one. Like a Summer Crush back in the day, or Minnesota’s short summer season, this beer won’t beer around for very long. Enjoy it while you can!

Kolsch The kolsch is light in color and has a bouquet of lemon and wheat. The style is clean and has light, bready malt tones. A laid back bitterness finishes the beer, making it a refresh-ing and affable pint.

Boysenberry Milkshake IPA Yep, just as weird as it sounds. It has: lactose, vanilla, boysen-berry juice, lots of oats and wheat, and a ton of hops. Mosaic, Citra, & Galaxy in the kettle, Mosaic only dry hop. Aroma is berry berry & danky pine. Flavor is definite berry, pine, and a sweet cream finish. Mouthfeel is very smooth and velvety. There is a slight lingering bitterness.

Sour Delores Very berry and juicy. A nice amount of tartness and a touch of funk carry throughout.

Peanut Butter Porter Flavors of rich peanut-butter accented by smooth roasted malt flavor. Ever dream of drinking a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup? Well your wish just came true.

It pours a dark amber color with ruby highlights and a thick, tan head as the aroma hints of toast, caramel, dried fruit, and cocoa. The body maintains a silky mouthfeel while not being too heavy or cloying. The flavor is dominated by caramel toffee, toasty malt, hints of cocoa, and a slight residual honey sweetness.

Balanced for optimal aromatics and a clean finish. The perfect reward for an honest day’s work and the ultimate companion to celebrate life’s simple pleasures.

PC Pils Pleasantly crisp, perfectly clean and profoundly crushable, PC Pils is our take on the classic Pilsner style. While Noble hops have been the preferred choice of Pilsner brew-ers around the world, we went with some of our favorite American varieties. Piney Chinook, pleasantly citrus Cascade and punchy Centennial make this an easy-drinker with floral hop characteristics. Pretty cool, if you ask us.

El Wisco Mexican Lager El Wisco pours bright gold with a rocky white head. Mild lemon candy, herbal tea, and slight melon aromas greet the nose from late Lemondrop™ and Mt. Hood hop additions. The light body delivers mellow clover honey and citrus flavor before wrapping up with a crisp finish.

New Grist Gluten Free New Grist is a one-of-a-kind beer brewed without wheat or barley: one of the first beverages of its kind that can be enjoyed by those on a gluten-free diet. These in-gredients combine to form a crisp, refreshing session ale brewed for those with celiac disease, or anyone with an appreciation for great tasting, handmade beer. It pours a brilliant gold color, with a bubbly head, and light, fruity aroma.

IPA Pours a radiant copper with a rocky white head that lasts, and leaves a soft lace on your glass as you sip this refreshing beer. American Cascade, Chinook, and Citra hops dominate the aroma, yielding a citrusy, floral bouquet. It finishes easy and crisp with a lingering hop flavor reminiscent of fresh ruby red grapefruit.

Fixed Gear Red Ale Fixed Gear is a big, bold American red IPA. It pours a glaring crimson tone with a rocky white head and a brilliant floral-citrus aroma, thanks to an aggressive Cen-tennial, Cascade, and Chinook dry hopping. A balanced citrus bite comes from the Chinook and Cascade hops followed shortly by mild, fruity esters from the ale yeast.

TASTING BEERTasting beer can be very rewarding. As you encounter new styles or brands it helps to know what to look for in a new beer as well as how to evaluate it. Take your time and work through the aspects of each beer, one by one.

APPEARANCE: How does it look? Examine the appearance of the beer itself. Hold the glass up to the light and examine the color, clarity, and head. Is it clear or cloudy? Note whether the head is dense or thin. The color of the head is also worth noting and can range from pure white on Pilsners to light or medium brown on some stouts and porters.

AROMA: Take your time with the aroma. Bring it to your nose and inhale. Try to take several good sniffs before you take your first sip. If you’re taking notes, stop to write your impressions before the first sip distracts you. What does it smell like? Does it smell primarily of hops, malt, yeast, or something else?

FIRST SIP: Note the initial sensation as the beer enters your mouth. Think about whether it is sweet, bitter, fruity, sour or something else. There can be quite a bit of difference between the first taste and the finish.

MOUTHFEEL: This is the texture of the beer or how it physically feels in your mouth. Beer ranges from silky, dry stouts, to thick and chewy. Try to note the body, carbonation, warmth, creaminess, and astringency.

FINISH: Note the lingering flavors after you swallow the drink. Often it can be bitter from the hops or it can have a lingering malty sweetness. Stop before your next drink and try to write down everything you just detected. Try to confirm it with your second drink or see if you need to rethink your conclusions.

STYLES: There is a lot of variation from one beer to the next with regards to style. Some beers are brewed with style in mind and others are not. Styles can be used as a learning tool to look at historical brewing norms and to help understand where certain characteristics of beer come from. The Beer Judge Certification Program Style Guidelines and the Brewers Association Beer Style Guidelines are two great sources of information to learn more about beer styles.
