Community Festival Appreciation Event

We’re so grateful to all our festival volunteers for all of your hard work! We invite you to

join in the fun as we take a cruise on the Ohio River with Queen City Riverboats, on Friday

June 22. We’ll depart by bus from Temple Israel at 5:30 p.m. and board the yacht “Clipper”

at 7:00 p.m. We’ll enjoy a wonderful buffet dinner that will include salmon, chicken and

vegetable lasagna along with salad, roasted red potatoes, a vegetable medley and carrot cake.

We’ll celebrate Shabbat together with a service after dinner. The expected arrival time back

at Temple Israel is 10:00 p.m. Cost is $20

and space is limited. Call the office to

reserve your spot. All are welcome.

There will not be a Shabbat service

at Temple.

David Ze’ev Jablinowitz landed in Israel in 1981 after completing his degree in writing from

Queens College in New York. After first anchoring newscasts and hosting science and

sports programs, he covered the Demjanjuk war crimes trial in 1987 and ’88. In June 1989,

he became Knesset correspondent, and has covered diplomatic and political beats during the

terms of Prime Ministers Yitzhak Shamir, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Ehud Barak, Ariel

Sharon and Ehud Olmert, and Binyamin Netanyahu. In addition, he’s

worked as an Israeli consultant for BBC, Reuters, Sky News, and

periodically reports for CBS Radio.

Over the past few years, David has added a new dimension to telling

of the Israeli experience: instead of just the news, David has shared

the slice of life. Instead of politicians, he has told of the real, regular

people on the buses, the markets, the streets of Jerusalem and Tel

Aviv, and wherever stories come his way. If the stories don’t come

his way, he looks for them.

Says David: “Life in Israel can feel like a roller coaster. For me,

covering the hard news and soft stories of this country has been

quite a ride, and I hope I don’t have to get off anytime soon.”

Hear David speak at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary at the Jewish Cultural Festival.

Celebrating Israel: A Photo Exhibit

This comprehensive exhibit showcases a selection of historical moments that

embody the great endeavor that was the establishment of the State of Israel,

as seen through the eyes of its people. Highlighted within are the

experiences of Jews from around the world who escaped hatred and fear to

live freely in a Jewish state. The panels and personal stories on display

enable viewers to explore Israel’s major historical events and consider the

lives of its early immigrants — what it took for them to reach the State of

Israel and how they adjusted to life in their new homeland. Organized

sequentially and by theme, Celebrating Israel gives viewers insight into the

country’s formation. The exhibit was curated by The Museum for the Jewish

People in Tel Aviv, from The Bernard H. and Miriam Oster Visual

Documentation Center.

From the Rabbi

Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz Senior Rabbi

“For thousands of years we

safeguarded the Book, and it has kept

us safe.” - David Ben-Gurion.

Today was the last day of Religious

School and, before we began to close

the school wing down for the

summer, we offered

an opportunity to our

students to

meaningfully reflect

on what it means to

be Am HaSefer, a

People of the Book.

We did so by

engaging them in a

burial of our geniza

books. These books

have been well-loved,

damaged, or simply

are no longer in use

and have been stored

in the building. In

generations past, just

as we did today, we

took them to the cemetery to be

buried with honor, alongside our

most wise and gifted scholars. Our

children placed our retired Gates of

Repentance, red Plaut Torah

commentaries, our blue Gates of

Prayer and even early pilot versions of

Mishkan Tefillah into the earth. These

were intermingled with a few Union

Prayer Books and old Hebrew school

prayer worksheets.

At the cemetery today, our students

learned that our holy objects are

treated with respect just as we show

respect to our loved ones. We bury

our books rather than throw them

away, because we recognize that they

are filled with sparks of holiness.

Through our Torah and our sacred

texts, we find meaning in God’s

teachings. And, through our liturgy

in the prayer books, we find the

words to share our innermost

thoughts and prayers with God.

These books are holy tools that help

us experience the Divine.

Love and reverence

for our books has

been taught from

generation to

generation. It was a

privilege for us to

prepare our books

and help put them at

rest after their years

of service to us.

Through our books

we have found

wisdom, strength, joy,

and atonement.

Now, let our

righteous actions

stand as living

testimony to the words in those

pages that now rest in the earth.

Please feel free to bring any books

you need to be buried to the Temple

office, where we will store them until

the next geniza burial two years from

now.

Be one of the People of the Book.

This summer, remind yourselves that

you, too, are a part of Am HaSefer.

When you take in the warmth and

beauty of long summer days, do so

by treating yourself to a book that

helps further your knowledge of

Judaism. If you need any

recommendations, please see me,

Rabbi Sobo, or any of our library

volunteers and we would be happy

to help you.

We Remember These names are inscribed on the Memorial Tablets in our Sanctuary and, together with others whose Yahrzeit occurs during these weeks,

will be read during Shabbat services before Kaddish.

Thanks for the Schmooze

Thanks to the following congregants for sponsoring a Schmooze and Nosh (pre-neg) for the months of April and

May;

Rabbi Tina and Matt Sobo, Judy Heller, Phyllis and Mort Levine, Nancy and Rich Cohen, Carol Finley, Sara and

Mitchell Faust, and Lynn and David Goldenberg.

Thanks to their generosity, attendees have the opportunity to enjoy a little nosh before the service and get to know

their fellow congregants at the same time. It's a win/win for all concerned.

If you are interested in sponsoring a Friday evening "in honor of" or "in memory of" a loved one, contact Linda Novak

836-2458. You can supply all of the goodies yourself, or you can write a check to cover the costs and let us do the

shopping and set up for you. Either way you will be acknowledged as the sponsor of the event.

My journey to discovering a new

house of worship was long and

arduous, but one conversation with

Rabbi David Sofian during his Judaism

101 class helped me find my new

religious home.

After our talk, I begin attending

Torah study and Shabbat services on

Saturdays, and I completed the

Introduction to Judaism program.

After months of study, I officially

became a Jew with a trip to the

Mikveh, and chose to have a bat

mitzvah with others in the Adult

B’nai Mitzvah class. I will never

forget the joy I felt when I was

recognized as a new member at a

Shabbat service following my

conversion.

Like many of you, my husband and I

regularly receive requests for

donations from all kinds of

organizations. We have our favorite

non-profits to which we contribute,

and we are very selective with our

giving. Temple Israel is on the top of

the list. For me, there has never been

a question about this. I know that

Temple Israel positively impacts the

lives of its congregants and the entire

Dayton area. Through the Jewish

Cultural Festival, we reach outward

and inward to celebrate and educate,

and through participation in the

University of Dayton Lifelong Learning

Institute, Reform Ohio, and the

Dayton MLK Walk, we practice our

Jewish value of tikkun olam. The next

generation is nurtured and taught in

our religious school, and adult learning

opportunities challenge us to explore

our culture, faith, and history.

I wish I had been raised Jewish. If I

had, I might have attended the URJ

Goldman Union Camp Institute

(GUCI) and gone to Washington D.C.

to meet with members of Congress

through the L’taken program of the

Religious Action Center.

The list could go on forever, but

these are some of the treasures I

want to see continued. I also

recognize that Temple Israel's

physical structure must be

maintained. This is why I have signed

my Letter of Intent for the Life and

Legacy program - I want to help

ensure Temple Israel will be around

for future generations.

When we sign a Letter of Intent, we

are making a promise that future

generations will have a thriving

Jewish community to enrich and

embrace their lives. Our

commitment ensures that Temple

Israel will continue to be a “house of

prayer for all people.”

After all is said and done, what will

be your legacy?
