Girl Scout’s STEM-a-palooza
On April 16 - 250 scouts from the Rochester and Buffalo areas partici-pated in this event. From Daisies to Cadets, the scouts participated in hands-on demonstrations focusing of STEM (Science Technology En-gineering Math) careers. The Greater Rochester NY chapter used a bridge building model with plan reading to demonstrate women and careers in construction. Thanks to our chapter volunteers – Diana Snyder, Florence Indovina, and Cari Durbin. Also helping was Mary Ellen Papin from the NYSDOT.

Good to know soft skills: Collaboration If you are a good workplace collaborator, you are prized by your employer because you are a goal achiever. Effective collaboration is a learned skill to maximize productivity by teaming with others. Don’t confuse col-laboration with simple cooperation. Both are positive behaviors, but collaboration is proactive and heavy on
taking initiative. Think of bicycle pedals. One pedal does not “cooperate” with the other. Instead, it is an equal push. This is collaboration. Enhance your ability to collaborate: 1) Know what each team member’s role will be. 2) Have fast and efficient ways of commu-nicating to address key issues. 3) Create a tradition of team members seeking immediate clarification when unsure or unclear about tactics, tasks, or goals. 4) Spot conflicts early, and resolve them before moving forward. 5) Put group goals above an individual mem-ber’s personal reward for success. Failure to do so will create hidden agendas and adversely affect com-munication and lessen your achievements. 6) Good team collaborators are tolerant of each other’s quirks and shortcomings, but when personal behaviors threaten progress, make them a group concern for problem resolution. Labor Department announces $1.9M funding opportunity The U.S. Department of Labor announced a $1.9 million grant competition to recruit, train and retain women in high-skill occupations, such as advanced manufacturing, transportation, energy, construction and information technology. The Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations program will fund the grants. The department will award approximately four grants to community-based organizations to create regional, multi-state Technical Assistance Resource Centers. The centers will support efforts to increase the number of women entering into nontraditional occupations and Registered Apprenticeships. Services to current and potential sponsors of apprenticeship will include providing technical assistance and support related to:
Development of connections with pre-apprenticeship programs to prepare women for Registered Appren-ticeship programs.
Orientations for employers on creating a successful environment for women in apprenticeship.
Identifying resources for supportive services including child care, transportation, support groups and other efforts to remove barriers to women succeeding in these industries.
Eligible applicants include community-based organizations capable of establishing technical assistance resources for Registered Apprenticeship programs to assist women to enter nontraditional occupations.
The department’s Women’s Bureau and Office of Apprenticeship are jointly administering the grants. The solicitation for grant applications will be available at http://www.grants.gov/. For information on the depart-ment’s range of employment and training programs, visit http://www.doleta.gov/.

Young Professional Award winner announced Shamila Craddock, CEO of Doc’s Facilities Solutions and NAWIC Greater Rochester NY chapter member, will receive the 2016 Young Professional of the Year Award from the Greece, NY Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes investment of personal and pro-fessional leadership, and broad-based community in-volvement. The Chamber wrote: “Doc’s CEO embodies those qualities”.

Few U.S. Outdoor Workers Routinely Using Sun-screen, Survey Finds
"There are very real dangers associated with sun exposure that are often overlooked in the work-place," said Isabelle Faivre, vice president of mar-keting for Deb North America, which has its head-quarters in Charlotte, N.C. "Organizations should educate outdoor workers on proper sun protection and provide sunscreen for use daily." A survey commissioned by Deb Group and con-ducted online by Harris Poll among U.S. adults who work outdoors at least half the time found that just 18 percent of them always wear sunscreen at work. This, despite an estimate by the American Academy of Dermatology that more than 8,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer every day, according to Deb Group, which released the findings May 3. "Outdoor workers are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer and other ailments related to increased sun exposure," said Isabelle Faivre. According to Deb, the study found that 58 percent of outdoor workers said they always or sometimes see a need to wear sunscreen at work, but 71 percent of said their employers don't provide sunscreen to them for use at work. "Perhaps that is why 59 per-cent of outdoor workers always or sometimes bring their own sunscreen to work," the company re-ported. Deb Group said it is campaigning to raise aware-ness of the risks associated with prolonged UV ex-posure for people who spend a significant amount of time outside as part of their job and offers a collec-tion of educational materials for managers and em-ployees to implement an effective sun safety pro-gram, including a manager's guide, an infographic, blog posts, posters, and presentations.
