Economy & Industry Profile

§ Agriculture is the backbone of the district economy. 70% of the

population is engaged in primary sector , 22% in secondary sector

and 8% in tertiary sector

§ Fish processing industry is a major sector in Junagadh. Processed

fishes from Junagadh are exported to Singapore, China, Hongkong,

Japan, Dubai and other parts of the world. The industrial giant

Hindustan Lever Ltd. has a frozen fish packing unit in Maliya taluka

of the district

§ Presence of huge reserves of Limestone, makes the cement

industry a thriving industry sector in the district.

§ The major business of Junagadh district includes, Mineral based

industries such as, cement & soda ash, Agriculture based industries

like edible oil, groundnut units, solvent plants and oil cakes and

Marine based industries like fish processing units and frozen fish

§ Major crops produced in the district are wheat,

oilseeds, cotton, mango, banana, onion and

brinjal

§ Total production of Oilseeds in Junagadh in

2006-07 was 4,64,400 MT which was the highest

in the State

§ Junagadh is the largest producer of Groundnut

and Garlic in the State contributing 26% and

34% to total production respectively

§ Junagadh is the 4th largest producer of Cereals

in the State with total production of 5,69,800 MT

in 2006-07

§ Mango and onions are produced in large

quantities in the district

§ There are over 7,000 Small Scale Industries operating in Junagadh district in sectors which includes

food products, chemicals, electrical equipments, textiles and repairing & servicing

§ Maximum number of SSI units (3,018 Units) related to repairing & servicing are located in Junagadh

followed by food products industry with over 503 units

§ Most of the small scale industries are located in Junagadh, Keshod, Veraval, Manavadar, Kodinar

and Mangrol talukas of the district

Industry Investment Trends § As per the Industrial Entrepreneur Memoranda (IEMs)

filed, the total investments during 1988-97 was INR

2,270 Crore (USD 553.65 million), and during 1998 –

2007 investments were to the tune of INR 3,484 Crore

(USD 849.75 million)

§ Around 90% of the investments during 1998-07 came

from sectors such as Chemicals and Cement &

Gypsum products while the major investment during

1988-97 was contributed by industries involved in

Cement & Gypsum, Chemicals, Boiler and Steam

generating units and Infrastructure sector.

§ Cement and Gypsum sector observed significant

growth in investments over the previous decade

§ Fresh investments were witnessed in sectors such as

sugar, infrastructure projects and boiler and steam

generating units during 1998-07

Investment Trends: 1988-97§ During 1988-97 cement and gypsum products

attracted the highest investment of INR 1,548

crore (USD 377.56 million) contributing 68% to

the total investment in the decade

§ The sector also generated highest employment

opportunities creating 6,012 jobs with a share of

26%

§ Chemicals sector witnessed second highest

investment of INR 489 crore (USD 119.26 million)

and created employment opportunities for 4,369

persons

§ Food processing industries generated second

highest employment with 5,312 jobs and

contributed 23% to the total employment

§ Cement and gypsum products witnessed

highest investment of INR 2,026 crore (USD

494.14 million) projecting a growth of 31% and

contributing 58% to total investments

§ These also generated highest employment

opportunities creating 1,465 jobs with a share of

42% in total employment generated

§ Boiler and steam generating units and

infrastructure projects invited fresh

investments during the decade with INR 350

crore (USD 83 million) and INR 300 crore (USD

71 million) respectively

§ Sugar industry emerged as a new sector

inviting investments during the decade and

generating second highest employment of 860

jobs

Investments in Pipeline§ A total of 11 MoUs amounting to INR 5,968 crore (USD

1,455.6 million) of investments were signed in Junagadh

during Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit (VGGIS)

hosted in the years 2003, 2005 and 2007

§ Cement, Tourism, Textiles, Agro & Food processing,

Power and Ports sectors invited investments during Vibrant

Gujarat’s three summits

§ With an investment of INR 4,000 crore (USD 975.6 million), JSW Power Co. propose to set up coal based power plant at Simar in Junagadh

§ Maximum number of MoUs were signed in Cement industry and Agro & Food processing industry

§ 3 MoUs were signed in cement industry with proposed

investment of INR 1,360 crore (USD 331.70 million)

§ Agro & food processing industry also witnessed 3 MoUs to

establish fish processing units and Mango processing units

Economy Drivers

§ The economy of Junagadh is mainly based on agriculture. With the new Government policy of

biotechnology, Junagadh has been identified as one of the agriculture biotechnology zone. This will

boost setting up of agro-biotech industries in the district

§ Veraval port in the district will have separate facilities for commercial activities in near future.

This will increase commercial traffic at the port and would fuel the industrial activities of the district

§ With the development of Simar as a power port, opportunities exist for setting up of power plants along

the coastline of Junagadh

§ Cement has been a key industry of the district and will experience further growth with upcoming

cement units thereby leading to economic development of the district

§ Junagadh boasts of some of the best tourist destinations in the State and hence experiences a huge

influx of tourists every year

Road and Rail ConnectivityRoad

§ National Highway 8D passes through the district with a total length of 116 km, connecting Junagadh with Rajkot

§ With a length of 96 km, National Highway 8E passes through the district connecting it to Bhavnagar and Amreli district.

§ The district is also connected to Jamnagar and Porbandar through NH 8E (Ext.), with a total length of 43 km

§ Distance from major industrial centers: Ahmedabad (327 km), Surat (563 km), Vadodara (396 km), Gandhinagar (355 km), Vapi (652 km), Palanpur (473 km), Rajkot (102 km), Mehsana (401 km) and Bhavnagar (205 km)

Airports, Ports and Water Supply

§ Water supply for industrial purposes in the district can be obtained from four main sources, viz Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB), irrigation canals, bore wells, and Lakes

§ The district has a domestic airport located at Keshod connecting it to Porbandar and Mumbai

§ Veraval port is in Junagadh has good road and rail connectivity§ The port is connected with Ahmedabad by road and broad gauge railway

line§ Anchorage lies about 1.5 km offshore and at the anchorage three vessels can work at a time§ GMB has issued LOI for development of Sutrapada port on BOOT basis§ Sutrapada is located 14 km East of Veraval port. It is planned to develop 2 berths for bulk cargo in

Phase 1 at an investment of Rs. 600 crores§ Gujarat Ambuja cement has developed captive jetty at Muldwarka for their cement plant. The main

cargo handled at the jettyis coal, cement and clinker

§ Junagadh has a well developed network of sub stations to cater to the need of electricity for industry and

§ There are five substations of 220 KV, four substations of 132 KV and fourteen substations of 66 KV each

with a total of 16 substations in the district

Veraval Port § Veraval is a fair-weather lighterage port situated in the south-west coast of

Saurashtra and is mainly engaged in fishing activities

§ The main cargo handled at the port include wood pulp, food grains, fertilisers,

coal, coke, pig iron, oil cakes, fish, onions, lime stone, soda ash, and cement

§ With rich fish grounds, Veraval is also rich in agriculture product

Proposed Infrastructure Projects

Port Projects

• Gujarat Maritime Board has identified Simar as a potential site for development of a power

port for handling coal and LNG to meet the requirement of the power plant. The envisaged

cargo handling capacity of port envisage about 10MMTPA

• Sutrapada port is proposed to handle general cargo. The cargo handling capacity

envisages about 23 MMTPA. The proposed site is about 8 km from N.H. no. 8E

§ The State Government has sanctioned the project for development of Circuit Tourism

project at Junagadh

Education§ Junagadh Agricultural University offers education in

agriculture, agriculture engineering and fisheries

§ It conducts fruit, oilseed, sugarcane and wheat research,

testing and training centers

§ The research center of Central Institute of Fisheries

Technology (CIFT) is located at Veraval taluka which is

involved in research related to fishing and fish processing

§ The National Research Centre for groundnut is located in the

district

§ Technical colleges offering courses in chemical, civil,

electrical, electronic and communication, information

technology, production and mechanical engineering are also

present in the district

§ Junagadh also has a fisheries college located in Veraval

taluka offering courses in Pisciculture

§ Junagadh has several hospitals and research centres providing a comprehensive range of

medical services backed by modern technology and trained clinicians

§ There are 15 community and 55 primary health centers present in the district

§ It also has 1 civil hospital, 1 Government hospital, 390 sub centres, 6 allopathic

dispenseries, 1 mobile comprehensive health care unit and 2 mobile dispenseries

§ K.J. Vyas General Hospital provides specialised medical facilities for liver diseases

§ The district also has an Ayurvedic Regional Research Centre

Gir National Park

Tourism§ Gir National Park is the major attraction for most visitors to Junagadh

district. The Asiatic Lion is the key feature of the park. In addition to the

lion, there are jungle cats, hyenas, jackals, spotted deers, blackbuck,

porcupines and some 500 leopards

§ Mount Girnar is the highest point of elevation in Gujarat. The mountain

range has 866 Hindu and Jain temples and hermitages on the five peaks

§ Kankai, located 50 km from Sasan Gir, is a shrine dedicated to Kankai

Mata, the benefactor of shepherds of Gir. It is based in the heart of the

jungle. The lofty temple walls and sound doors ensure safety.

§ Talala and surrounding areas are famous for their Kesar mangoes, one of

the few Indian varieties known around the world

§ Kutiyana is a pilgrimage site of Muslims. The town is flocked with tourists

during Pir Minskinsha Urs, held from 13th through 15th day in the Muslim

month of SabaanGirnar Hill
