PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

NAPLAN Our 2019 Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN results were very impressive with more students in the top two bands of achievement in Reading and Numeracy than any other cohort since 2015.

Families received the individual NAPLAN results this week. These results should be viewed cautiously as they are merely a snapshot of a students progress on one particular day. Our staff will use the results to examine and develop our programs.

Should you have any questions or concerns about the NAPLAN results, please email Mr Leys, Head Teacher English (Relieving) at: [email protected]

PHPS Art Exhibition

Last week I had the pleasure of attending Pennant Hills Public School’s (PHPS) Art Exhibition. I saw spectacular work from Kindergarten to Year 6. One of my favourite displays was the Koinobori which reminded me of my Japanese teaching days. I also liked the clocks and ceramics because of their vibrant colours and designs. Our Visual Arts teachers are going to be very excited with the calibre of artists that we will welcome over the next six years. Thank you to Mr Pinchbeck, Principal PHPS for the invitation and to Ms Wasson, Deputy Principal PHPS for their warm welcome.

Year 12 End of School Festivities The annual Senior Citizens Concert is a chance for our Year 12 students to give something back to the local community which has supported them throughout their time at high school. It is a wonderful tradition and this year’s concert was once again an astounding success.

The concert was expertly compered by our 2018-2019 Vice Captain Rebecca. Congratulations to our Year 12 performers: Keean, Daniel, Matthew, Sam, David, Joshua, April and Harry. The performances were polished and it was heart-warming to see the comradery and support of their peers as each performance concluded. As I said to our special guests, our community’s future is in good hands.

Our Graduation ceremony was a fitting way to formally and officially farewell the class of 2019. It was wonderful to share this very important milestone with their friends and family.

The video prepared by Oscar and the poem written by Ela were a tremendous way for the cohort to say goodbye to Penno High. Ela’s poem can be read on the next page.

Thank you to our guest speaker Mrs Fogg for her challenge to Year 12 to be the best that they can be.

Thank you to our student manned Sound and Lighting Crew for once again ensuring the ceremony ran efficiently, our General Assistant Mr Randle for setting up the hall, the P&C for donating the enormous cake, the hard-working canteen staff for supper and our School Administrative staff for their assistance in the preparation.

Thank you to Mrs Blarasin, Year Adviser who, together with Ms Breden, Head Teacher Home Economics and Ms Dennis, Head Teacher CAPA coordinated and executed

P&C MEETING DATES FOR 2019

Term 4: 26 October, 26 November - followed by AGM

7.30pm in the School Library

All parents and caregivers are most welcome to attend these meetings, which provide the wider school community with a forum for discussion as we work together with staff to sustain and further develop the best possible learning environment for our students.

The discussions are complemented by presentations from staff, focusing on various aspects of education and, in particular, what is on offer at Pennant Hills High School.

If any parents or caregivers would like to receive the agenda and minutes of the meetings, please email [email protected] to arrange.

a seamless and unforgettable ceremony.

On Wednesday at assembly, the whole school farewelled Year 12 in our time honoured tradition. There were heartfelt speeches given by representatives from Years 7-11 which combined just the right balance of ribbing with their best wishes for a wonderful future. This was followed by a breakfast BBQ lovingly coordinated and served by Mr Niccol, Head Teacher HSIE, Mr Antoon, Mathematics Teacher, Mr Gill, IA Teacher and the catering team before Year 12 students were dismissed to prepare for their formal.

Having finally arrived at the formal, each and every one of the students looked spectacular as they walked into the venue. A great night of celebration, dancing and reminiscing was had by all.

We wish Year 12 all the very best as they move into their StuVac period before the first HSC English exam scheduled for Thursday 17 October 2019.

Year 11 Here We Go... The cohort have now completed their yearly exams an when they return next term will begin the Higher School Certificate (HSC) course.

Year 11 students and families are invited to attend and HSC Information Evening on Tuesday 15 October commencing 7.00pm in the MPC. The evening will be filled with important information about the final phase of their HSC journey and it is important for all families to attend.

One thing is always certain in schools, we keep moving forward!

Happy Holidays As Term 3 draws to a close, I would like to thank all our staff, students and school community for a fabulous term that has been filled with opportunity, activity and learning.

Students and staff return for Term 4 on Monday 14 October 2019 as there is no School Development Day.

A reminder to all students that we return for Term 4 in full summer school uniform.

I wish everyone a very save and happy vacation with lots of opportunity for rejuvenation as we head towards the end of the year.

And we are even closer for these days To be the past We will leave these gates with many good stories to share Like the Year 9 hut you’d find us sitting in? We wouldn’t dare And though after our last exam, the syllabus may be a blur I want to thank all my teachers, who (by the way) I no longer need to call miss or sir I know we complained but being at school is what made us close And I know that is something we will miss the most I wish everyone health, happiness and success, and being the best you, you’ve ever been I’ll miss you guys, class of 2019 So, as we walk out these gates for the last time with nerves and thrills I will never forget the bond we shared here at Pennant Hills Ela, Year 12 Student

A GRADUATION POEM

Thank you Miss Blarison for giving me this opportunity I’m honoured to perform a poem for our Penno High community 2014, when we started our journey The first time we were all here like this, in unity

Currently we are the big kids to the Year 7s But that's exactly how we’ll see our life after graduation, big and cruel No routine of getting to school I mean that’s if you’re on time and yes you know who you are No more teachers to guide us, short or far No more Macca’s runs we take by car When not wearing uniform, no more teachers to dodge No more canteen lines to cut in front of as the juniors stand and watch I know the teachers will miss our loud selves to grade sport on the bus Wishing this moment would come a little faster, this night has crept up on all of us Even though we missed out on these new excursions and camps We still get excited over sticker charts and stamps Thank you to my teachers for putting up with my short attention span I look ahead and for my future, I don’t really have a plan Well I know that tomorrow, all my girls are ready and tanned And after HSC, don't get too wild, those heading to party in Queensland In all seriousness, I hope you all find your dream and chase it Because I know you can Stepping into the real world? It's our time to face it How I often find myself writing poetry over studying Fluent in rhyme but on the spot, I’m stuttering Though I do try my hardest but I don't exactly excel Soon we will finally leave this all behind and hear that last school bell And when we do I hope you know the difference between wisdom and test scores Don't let the HSC put you down and highlight your flaws The world has much for you to offer, you are more This grade has so much light to give to the world, as our school life slowly comes to an end Academic, arts, sports stars and genuine friends I’ll miss running out of class so I don’t miss Tuesday nachos Man I’ll miss those Oh and my friends and teachers I suppose We are getting closer to that day where Wearing these sailor dresses will be our last

GEO ON THE VINE

Earlier this month, Year 12 Geography students explored the vineyards and surroundings of the Hunter Valley. The fieldwork trip began early with a two-hour drive to Scarborough Wine Company. Fieldwork being a requirement of the HSC curriculum, students actively engaged with the vineyard owner and chief expert in wine making, Mr Jerome Scarborough. They asked questions about the recent weather and the overall economic activity on a local scale. The group also learnt about the manufacturing steps of winemaking from the vine to the bottle. Thank you to the Scarborough Wine Company for their expertise and for creating a great day of learning.

Overall a fantastic day was had by all. Congratulations to our group for their commitment and participation during the day.

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH TEXTILES?

Year 12 Textiles and Design. Our Year 12 Textiles class finished their Major Works which counts towards 50% of their Higher School Certificate (HSC) mark.

The projects have now been sent to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for marking. Photos of their amazing textile items will be published in the newsletter next term.

Stage 5 Textiles Technology Students have completed their Haute Couture Hoodie. Year 9 and 10 Textiles enjoyed working with both a knit and woven fabric to produce a unique end product.

Year 10 Textiles Technology with Mr Toohey in a mass produced hoodie!

Year 9 Textiles Technology

Stage 4 Technology Mandatory In the Materials Focus Area students are working with calico fabric to produce a

reusable bag. They have dyed their fabric ready for construction.

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY WOOD MAJOR WORK EXHIBITION 2

The Industrial Arts Faculty hosted their annual exhibition of Year 12 Industrial Technology Wood - Major Works earlier this term.

The Major Work makes up 60% of the students HSC mark being 40% based on the actual major work and 20% based on the 80 page portfolio supporting the student’s journey through the creation of the work.

The exhibition was a huge success with well over 100 parents, students, family members, past students and past teachers attending.

As part of the exhibition, there were 3 prizes awarded to students for their works. The prizes were once again very generously donated by The Traditional Tools Group (https://www.tttg.org.au/) and we thank them for their wonderful support.

The Traditional Tools Group Best of Show Award, selected by members of The Traditional Tools Group, was awarded to Nicholas for his modernist hall table made from Tasmanian Oak.

Visitors voted on their favourite project and all votes went into a ballot for The 2019 People’s Choice Award. This was very close coming down to the last two votes when counted. The winner was David for his acoustic Guitar.

The 110% Award, chosen by the Industrial Arts Faculty for the one student who worked at the 110% level for the entire year, was won by Tom for his continued excellence in application to Industrial Technology.

Thank you to everyone who came along on the evening, and thank you to everyone who supported our Year 12 Industrial Technology students throughout the year.

SPORTS SHORTS…

Year 10 PASS Coaching with Pennant Hills Public School As part of the elective Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) Coaching unit, Year 10 students have been involved with coaching Year 3 and 4 students from one of our partner primary schools Pennant Hills Public School (PHPS). Groups of up to four PASS students were given the responsibility of devising two engaging forty-five minute coaching sessions in either Touch Football, European Handball or Speedaway.

Earlier this term, 180 very excited PHPS students participated in the first of the coaching sessions, held on our far oval. There were smiles and laughter aplenty and new movement skills gained. Our Year 10 students showed excellent communication and leadership skills, approaching the day with enthusiasm and vigour. Our second session was equally as successful. Congratulations to all students involved.

Charlene Stewart, PASS Teacher

NSW All Schools Athletics Competition Good luck to Anna and Sara who are competing at the All Schools Athletics Competition this week. We look forward to hearing their results.

Sydney North Cricket Congratulations to Year 11 student Jordan for being selected in the Sydney North Cricket team. Jordan will compete at the NSWCHSSA State Championships from Monday 11 November 2019 to Thursday 14 November 2019 in Grafton. We wish him all the best.

Evolution Martial Arts This week, Year 9 PASS students were put through their paces with two sessions of Boxing Fitness conducted by Ray and Tanya Morcombe of Evolution Martial Arts.

The PASS students appreciated working with such a professional and talented couple. More sessions are in the pipeline!

CLAY POTTING FUN This term, Year 9 Visual Arts students have been enjoying the process of making clay pots. The pots have been decorated with scenes from Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour and the surrounding cityscape following an excursion to Cockatoo Island earlier this year.

The clay pots have been a fun and challenging experience for the students and we are looking forward to seeing the finished product glazed and fired!

Tracey Tazewell, Visual Arts Teacher

YEAR 10 VA PORTRAITS

Earlier this term, Year 10 Visual Arts students attended the Archibald Exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

The excursion helped the students to gain some appreciation about portraiture and to be inspired for our Term 3 unit of work. Students spent the term researching famous portrait artists' and their work.

They then completed a collage using Adobe Photoshop based on an artist of their choice and developed skills in cutting lino to produce some beautifully carved prints on top of the collage.
