„Making Travel Possible for those with disabilities or severe illnesses‟
Last September Mr & Mrs
Vaughan-Fowler and their indomitable
band of enthusiastic helpers organised
a marvellous luncheon in the grounds of
their lovely house, themed along the
lines of the BBC‟s “Strictly Come
Dancing”. They persuaded local
amateurs to practice for weeks
beforehand and on the day Chris Tarrant chaired the panel of judges.
Over 300 people attended the lunch and they, together with very many local businesses
offering support enabled the magnificent sum of just over £50,000 to be raised for the Trust.

GORDON JACKSON, BORDERS GROUP
Gordon Jackson has been honoured to receive the MBE in the New Years honours list for
services to The Scottish Ambulance Service ( 32 years ), and charity work within the local
community which includes The Border Holiday Group which is now very well known throughout the Border
Regions of Scotland.
COAST TO COAST WALK
With the help of Iain and Chris Chisholm the Trustees have agreed to a
sponsored Coast to Coast Walk to celebrate 10 years of the Jumbulance
Trust and raise funds for another new Jumbulance to replace Mk15.
Please do all you can to support this, details of which are shown fully
on the separate letter.
LES HOUTON
10 years ago when the Jumbulance Trust was first formed, Les Houton
agreed to be one of our two senior drivers with responsibility for Mk15
which he had looked after since it was presented new to the former Across
Trust by the Rotary Club of Scunthorpe some 20 years ago. During his
time with the Jumbulance Trust he has covered many miles with many
differing groups and will be remembered for his professionalism and
kindness, especially to our VIPs. This year he reaches a watershed age and
has decided to take life more gently. He will no longer be driving for the
Trust and we wish him well and extend our thanks for the contributions he
has made to the Trust.

CLASSICS CARS, LUTON HOO, WEDNESDAY 6 JULY 2011
We were delighted to hear that Peter Madden who has supported us in the past is organising the 3rd Classics in
the Walled Garden which will be held at Luton Hoo on Wednesday the 6th July and has nominated the Jumbulance Trust as
one of his beneficiaries.
Classics in the Walled Garden is an evening picnic within and around the historic Walled Garden on the Luton Hoo
Estate. Spaces will be allocated as entries are received, the first 150 entrants will be inside the Walled Garden, the next
150 in the area immediately outside the Walled Garden with the remaining places in the paddock field nearby. On the
night there will be music, a licensed bar, and some catering facilities.
The event is aimed at cars and motorcycles aged 20 years and older, with more modern classics accepted at his
discretion. There will be parking available, outside the Walled Garden on payment, on the night for spectators and classics
which haven‟t booked.
Luton Hoo Walled Garden is set in a beautiful estate with entry from the New Mill End Road along a lovely tree
lined drive. You can read some of its history at; www.lutonhooestate.co.uk.
Proceeds from Classics in the Walled Garden will be divided between The Jumbulance Trust, The Walled Garden Project
and Help for Heroes. If you can spare a couple of hours of your time on the day to help with marshalling please let us
know. There will also be a tombola to raise extra funds, if you work for a company that might be interested in donating
some product or merchandise please get in touch.

TRUST HISTORY
Roy Gregory has travelled as a helper with John Gill on two occasions, wrote a splendid article in a past Newsletter and prepared an excellent video which we hope to get onto our website soon, and having spoken at length with Kathryn, he has offered to write a short history and appreciation of the Jumbulance Trust to mark the 10th Anniversary. His ideas are set out below which I commend to all of you and suggest that any contributions should be sent to the office before the end of February – by email if possible in order to reduce typing. Roy Gregory’s Ideas I am interested in including others’ experiences from the point of view helpers, Group leaders, admin staff, other trustees, drivers, VIPs and anyone else I haven’t thought of. Short descriptions, stories, reflections, poems, etc would be much appreciated (anything from a hundred words or so up to 1000). I am particularly interested in stories that illustrate all that is best about Jumbulance Groups and also to celebrate the little known heroes and heroines who contribute to each group holiday and all the work that goes on in preparation. Group leaders I am sure would all have a fund of precious, scary, funny experiences to share. I am not sure of the format yet and to some extent it depends on the material I receive and find for myself. Overall I am trying to answer the questions: What makes the amazing people that participate do it?
How does this spirit of adventure, kindness, determination against the odds, humour and hard work get passed on and become the ethos of the groups and the organisation? - and where did it come from?
How can this best be described to others? I will appreciate every contribution but may need to edit both in terms of length and maybe by not including all I receive. I am sorry for this need to select if it does occur since I know all is precious and takes time to put together. Thank you in advance. Please send, before the end of February, any stories, experiences, etc to the Trust office as an attachment by email: [email protected] or delivered to the Trust Office: Delaport Coach House, Lamer Lane, Wheathampstead, St Albans, Herts, AL4 8RQ. Alternatively you can ring Nicola to discuss further on Mobile No: 07795018934. I hope I can produce something which does justice to this extraordinary organisation. Roy Gregory
NEW JUMBULANCE FOR 2012
Last October the Trustees decided that Mk16 had reached the end of its useful life
with the Trust and it has been sold. Mk15 is still part of our fleet but now 20 years
old and rapidly becoming uneconomic to maintain. It has been decided therefore that
we should aim to purchase another new Jumbulance of modern design and
specification and aim to have this in service for the 2012 season. To achieve this we
must place an order by June this year. Already we are fortunate to have raised
substantial funds in hand but estimate we shall need £50-75,000 more. If you wish
to contribute to this important project please see ways you can on Page 8.

PARALYMPIC HAND CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS, SEPT 2010
For the first time an international paralympic competition was held at Deal in Kent and the Jumbulance
Trust was asked to transport the foreign competitors from Gatwick to Deal and back again after the events.
This was an eye-opener for those involved. The competitors themselves were fiercely independent,
staggeringly fit, full of fun and enthusiasm and could not speak highly enough of Steve Phillips who drove our
Jumbulance and trailer and looked after them so well.
Once again this year we will be taking children from the
Acorn’s Hospice in Birmingham down to Devon for 3
separate trips in February and March. This is as a result
of a successful trip in April 2010, Acorns newsletter
article below.
In April, eleven intrepid adventurers embarked on a remarkable journey of discovery in the West Country.
Having been fortunate to secure funding from the Heart of Birmingham PCT, Acorns took four young people on
an adventure weekend at the Calvert Trust in Devon to experience activities including rock climbing, canoeing,
zip wires, archery and swinging through the trees on ropes. The four young people were supported by a team
of carers and one of our volunteers as well as an instructor at Calvert. The weekend began with the journey
down to Devon in the „Jumbulance‟ – a specially adapted coach for wheelchair users. All of the equipment at
the Calvert Trust – ropes, harnesses and seats – were developed to enable everyone, whatever their ability to
participate in the activities. The first day saw the group adventuring on a challenge course followed by arch-
ery, rock climbing and the zip wire. Everyone who took part found strengths and determination that they‟d not
experienced before. By the end of the day everyone was exhausted, but very happy so relaxed with a session
in the hydrotherapy pool and enjoyed some home cooked food. Canoeing was the order of the day on day two
with the canoes fixed together to create a catamaran. This was followed by some crate stacking - hilarious
fun with plenty of adrenalin! After this came rope swinging, another trip to the pool and then a disco.
Needless to say, everyone slept very well that night!
The group set off for home the following day, happy after having had such a tremendous time. The young peo-
ple achieved so much from the experience and it showed us all that the „can do‟ attitude of the Calvert Trust
makes sure that everyone goes home proud of what they have done and who they are.
We would like to thank the Jumbulance Trust for their excellent service and the Calvert Trust for their help,
support and instruction in making this a wonderful experience for all.
We have used the Jumbulance once previously, and found it to be the safest and most secure form of trans-
port for our young people – there is plenty of space to carry the huge amount of equipment needed to care for
our young people, and the driver could not do enough to help us make the trip as smoothly as possible.

5 September-3 October 2010
We arrived on Sunday morning after a good journey with drivers Les and Jim, and enjoyed a pre booked
lunch and then had a relaxing afternoon on site before dinner and bed.
The Hotel Alpin is approximately 6years old and is has some lovely features. Helpers and VIP‟s used the
indoor heated pool regularly as well as the sauna and steam rooms with their complimentary hot and cold
drinks. The owners Albert and his wife were always on hand to make our stay comfortable. The rooms of
which 7 were disabled friendly were well appointed and all had a balcony. The food was excellent and the
wine at the bar quite cheap. As we only booked BB and evening meal we went out every day except the last,
for lunch and sightseeing.
Every evening was spent in the bar area with games, singing or quizzes and on Tuesday we had ordered a
group of Tyrolean dancers to entertain us, we also had Albert our host playing his accordion.
We went to the top of St Ulrich by cable car with lunch at the top, which was a long day out journey
time about 1hour plus.
A short day out was to Vipiteno journey time about 30 minutes.
Another full day out to Innsbruck, journey time about 1hour 30min was a good day.
Brixen about an hour away is one of the oldest towns in the Sudtirol and a very interesting place; we
could have spent longer there.
Friday was our last chance to shop, so we went to the border town of Brenner, to on outlet shopping
mall and also hit the supermarket for wine to take home.
After clearing our rooms by 11am on Saturday we spent the day on site with a few walks, and had lunch
and dinner before setting off for Reading at 6.15pm and arrived home at 2pm on Sunday.
A very enjoyable holiday and some very good feedback from both helpers and VIP‟s, and I would recommend
the venue to other groups. For more information please contact, John J Gill Group Leader via the office.
WOODLEY GROUP JUMBULANCE TRIP TO ITALIAN DOLOMITES
WOMAD JULY 2010
Another first for the Trust in conjunction with the support of the Rotary Club And David Tinker, who arranged to take a
group of severely disabled and sick young adults from Douglas House in Oxford to the WOMAD Festival to have a
marvellous time including meeting Rolf Harris. This year we shall be doing the same again as well as attending Glastonbury.

IN MEMORY
PAPAL VISIT TO COFTON PARK, BIRMINGHAM 19 September 2010
Having left Yorkshire at 12.30am we arrived in Birmingham in the dark to the vast floodlit still empty coach park at the old Longbridge car plant. As all other coaches were under the banner of the National Express there was no mistaking our arrival in the Jumbulance. We hurriedly gave everyone some breakfast as by now although still dark and raining the other coaches were arriving thick and fast. We settled in Cofton Park with 5 hours to go before the Pope’s arrival! It was wet cold and dark, the bright lights of the altar were shining through the darkness illuminating a large portrait of Cardinal Newman. We chatted drank tea then slumped into silence trying to keep dry and the cold at bay and to conserve our failing energy. As dawn broke the choirs began singing and the expectation of this momentous occasion began falling into place. As the Pope’s arrival was approaching the dark grey clouds turned to light grey then to fluffy white clouds until a glorious sunshine burst forth as Pope Benedict entered the site in his Pope mobile to great cheers, the rain had stopped and the sky’s rays shone with a rainbow. Two of the hymns sung at Cofton Park were written by John Henry Newman. During Mass the Beatification took place and the Pope declared John Henry Newman Blessed which is now the last process before sainthood. Newman left the Anglican ministry age 44 and was received into the Catholic Church on October 9th 1845. This date the Pope said was to be commemorated as Blessed John Henry Newman’s feast day. The Pope began his Homily by noting that the day marked the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. He recalled that in 1940 the nearby city of Coventry had suffered heavy bombing with massive loss of life, he said “For me as one who lived and suffered through the dark days of the Nazi regime in Germany it is deeply moving to be here with you on this occasion and to recall how many of your fellow citizens sacrificed their lives courageously resisting the forces of evil ideology.” The Pope talked in depth about the life and work of Blessed Newman how he was an academic but a man of the people, how he had founded the Birmingham Oratory working among the sick and the poor comforting the bereaved and caring for those in prison During his life Cardinal Newman could often be seen walking in the green wooded hills of the park, so Cofton Park was a really significant place to be. On his death thou-sands of people lined the streets as his body was taken to its place of rest not half a mile from the park. All too soon the Mass came to a close and the Pope was gone leaving everyone feeling elated. The spirit of joy continued the choirs sang and no one seemed in a hurry to leave. People were very appreciative of been given the opportunity of their life to be so close and in the presence of the Holy Father. I have numerous letters from a variety of travellers some of whom had never experienced Jumbulance travel before, each person expressing their gratitude for being given the opportunity to be with the Hoy Father for the Beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman. I think it is safe to say we made a dream come true for those who travelled to Cofton Park. For those who had never previously travelled on Jumbulance they gained a great insight into the work and dedication given by the team of carers. Angela Kennedy ( West Yorkshire Jumbulance Group
It is with great sadness that the West Yorkshire Jumbulance Group (Wakefield) announce the
death of two of their regular passengers.
Peggy Atkinson lost her 18 month fight with cancer last July; she had cared for her disabled son all her
life and appeared indestructible, she had had the energy of a 60 year old and belied her age of being
closer to 90. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Rosemary Healy celebrated her 50th birthday last October a week before her passing. We were
privileged to be invited to join her. Rosemary had suffered for many years with Multiple Sclerosis. She
had a wicked sense of humour and bore her illness with great dignity. She was a wonderful example to all
who knew her.
