EXT. DOCKS - DAYTIME
Zimbabwe by New Navy plays in the background
A slight boy walks towards a long jetty at the docks,
speaking on his phone as he goes. He is JORDAN EVANS, slight
nerdy boy in his late teens.
JORDAN
No, Mum...his parents said it was
fine...yes, Mark’s been sailing his
whole life...life-jackets on
board...I didn’t forget my puffer!
GIRL
Parents, huh?
Jordan turns to see a pretty blonde girl, around his age,
sitting on the grass to his left. She is CHLOE LAMBERT,
smiling to herself as she throws chips to seagulls.
JORDAN
Got to go, uh...Kirby.
Jordan hangs up hurriedly.
JORDAN
Parents? Nah...just this girl...you
know how it is.
CHLOE
You can’t fool me, Jordie.
She throws the last of her chips to the birds and stands up.
Jordan blushes as they begin to walk towards the jetty
together.
JORDAN
I’m surprised you’re not on the
boat already, lapping up the
luxury.
CHLOE
Please...it’s boats like these that
are ruining the environment.
Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of
ways to head out to Sparrow Island
without one.
JORDAN
The perfect catch-22.
2.
CHLOE
Something like that.
BOY
Ahoy, me hearties!
Jordan and Chloe look further up the jetty to spot a hulking
young man waving to them from the biggest boat of the lot.
He is Chloe’s brother MARK LAMBERT, standing atop his
parent’s boat Tangaroa.
MARK
Are we ready, or what?
JORDAN
Are you sure your parents are OK
with you taking their boat?
MARK
Take? Please. What’s theirs is
mine, and what’s mine is ours.
CHLOE
That’s his way of saying no.
A skinny brunette walks up behind Mark and puts her arms
around him. She is his new girlfriend MICHELLE HELDT.
MICHELLE
I love a man who plays by his own
rules.
Michelle kisses him, and Chloe groans.
MARK
Hear that, Jordie? Stop being such
a stickler and maybe you’ll get a
girl like me.
Jordan looks at Chloe, and then away quickly.
JORDAN
Yeah...maybe.
CUT TO - EXT. OCEAN
Mark roars at the wheel as the boat flies out of the harbour
and into the sea.
I’m on a Boat by Lonely Island plays from an iPod dock
Michelle dances happily around the deck, singing along to
the music from the iPod dock in the cabin.
3.
MICHELLE
(singing)
I’m on a boat mother fucker take a
look at me! Straight flowing on a
boat on the deep blue sea!
Jordan raises an eyebrow at the back, and Chloe laughs.
JORDAN
She’s...an odd one, this one.
CHLOE
Don’t worry. They never tend to
last long.
JORDAN
I just don’t get what he see’s in
those girls.
CHLOE
I can see two things.
Michelle takes off her top and whips it around and the surf
splashes up and wets her.
JORDAN
I think there are more important
things to girls than...
MARK
(yelling)
Jordan! The Captain needs you!
Jordan looks longingly at Chloe before getting up and
joining him at the wheel.
MARK
Talking to my sister, huh?
JORDAN
Yeah, um, I...
MARK
(moving on)
I’ve got a surprise for you.
JORDAN
This isn’t going to be one of those
awkward moments that changes our
friendship forever, is it?
4.
MARK
That depends.
Mark points to an island in the distance to their left,
which they are now passing.
MARK
That...is Sparrow Island.
JORDAN
So what’s this...the scenic route?
MARK
We’re not going there...we’re
heading to Rottnest instead.
A look of horror crosses Jordan’s face.
JORDAN
But...but you said...
MARK
I know what I said! If I told you
the truth, you’d never have come!
Michelle approaches from behind.
MICHELLE
Why...what’s wrong with Rottnest?
MARK
Nothing, babe.
JORDAN
...unless you believe the stories.
MICHELLE
(wide eyed)
What stories!?
JORDAN
...the murderer who lives there.
MICHELLE
Murderer!?
MARK
Stop scaring her, man! It’s all a
load of shit...a rumor spread by
fishermen so nobody else will go
there.
5.
JORDAN
I don’t think I’m comfortable with
this, Mark...
MARK
Right, then let’s take a vote. I’m
a yes, obviously. Babe?
MICHELLE
I go where Mark goes.
MARK
Sis?
Chloe walks up to the group.
CHLOE
You know I’m in...they say the reef
systems out there are amazing.
Jordan looks at Chloe, bemused.
JORDAN
You knew?
CHLOE
(smiling)
We love you, Jordan...but you’ve
really got to try new things.
MARK
Rottnest it is, then!
The boat speeds away into the distance.
CUT TO - EXT. ROTTNEST ISLAND BAY
The boat slows down as they approach the island, which
appears wild and uninhabited. The mainland is no longer
visible.
MARK
Doesn’t look so scary, does it?
CHLOE
It looks amazing...check that out!
A pod of dolphin swim past the boat. They slowly approach a
beautiful looking reef.
CHLOE
Stop the boat...now!
Mark does so, and Chloe begins to strip off her clothes.
6.
CHLOE
If I don’t get right in there now,
I may actually kill myself.
Chloe points to the other set of diving gear.
CHLOE
You coming in, Mark?
JORDAN
I’ll go!
They look at him, surprised.
MARK
You? Diving?
JORDAN
Somebody once said I need to try
new things.
Chloe smiles at him as he begins to take off his shirt.
CHLOE
I’m impressed!
Jordan grins nervously.
CUT TO - EXT. BACK OF BOAT
Jordan and Chloe, both in their swimsuits and diving gear,
prepare to dive down.
MARK
Remember to breathe deep...don’t
come up too fast...don’t panic...
CHLOE
He’ll be fine...he’s with me.
Mark pats Jordan on the back, and watches as Chloe jumps
into the water. She surfaces near Jordan.
CHLOE
What are you waiting for!?
She dives down. Jordan nervously slips off the back, and
falls into the water ungraciously.
CUT TO - INT. OCEAN
7.
The two slowly make their way through the colorful and
exotic coral. A large fish bursts out at Jordan who recoils
in shock, and appears to be panicking. Chloe takes his hand
and smiles; he returns it as they continue down.
Jumanji Drums begin to play; progressively getting louder.
Chloe and Jordan look at each other, eyebrows raised, and
nod. They begin to swim towards the sound of drums. Finally,
they come across a large chest.
CUT TO - INT. BOAT
Mark and Michelle fall back against each other, naked and
sweating. They have clearly just had sex.
MICHELLE
Oh...yeah.
MARK
The first of many; this trip is
going to blow your fucking mind.
MICHELLE
I hope so!
Michelle kisses Mark, and it seems as though they are going
to do it again, when a voice rings out.
CHLOE
Hey...give us a hand!
Mark grabs his shorts and pulls them on, running to the back
of the boat. Chloe and Jordan have one hand on the chest
each and are struggling to hold it up.
MARK
What the hell is that?
JORDAN
We’ll tell you when we know.
Mark leans down and grabs the chest, swinging it onto the
deck with impressive ease. He grabs Chloe and then Jordan,
helping them back onto the boat.
MICHELLE
(scared)
Is it dangerous?
CHLOE
Whatever it is, there’s music
involved...we could hear drums.
8.
MARK
Drums? I think the dive got to you.
MICHELLE
Shh! Listen!
Michelle leans next to the chest; the soft beating of drums
can indeed be heard.
MICHELLE
That’s so weird!
Mark grabs a small fire axe from the cabin.
JORDAN
(nervously)
Maybe we shouldn’t open it. It
could be dangerous!
MARK
And so could global warming. Isn’t
gonna stop me from deodorizing.
Mark swings the axe and breaks the lock. He moves to open it
but Chloe blocks him.
CHLOE
Hey! Finders keepers, bro.
Chloe slowly begins to open the chest.
MARK
Come on...give me the killer’s
treasure...
CHLOE
...ancient artifacts...
MICHELLE
(loudly)
A new iPod!
Chloe rolls her eyes as she opens the chest...revealing an
old board game. Mark instantly looks disappointed as Chloe
takes it out and places it on the deck.
MARK
Biggest anticlimax since the Lost
finale. Ah, well...
CHLOE
Shh!
Chloe examines the game closely.
9.
JORDAN
What is it?
CHLOE
Jumanji...
She opens the game and her eyes widen.
CHLOE
...a game for those who seek to
find a way to leave their world
behind. Roll the dice to move the
token, doubles mean another turn,
the first player to reach the end
wins.
MICHELLE
Ooh, a game! Can we play?
MARK
You can’t be serious.
MICHELLE
What? Why not?
MARK
I haven’t played board games since
I was twelve.
JORDAN
This doesn’t exactly look like
Mousetrap, Mark.
CHLOE
He’s right...look at the
tokens...are these real ivory? That
is disgusting!
The four pick up one token each.
JORDAN
Who would put ivory in a game?
MICHELLE
Mattel?
MARK
This is stupid.
Mark throws down his token, and the others follow. As if by
magic, the tokens shake and fly to each corner of the board.
10.
MICHELLE
Wow!
JORDAN
That’s odd...we must have tripped
the magnets or something.
Chloe tries to take the token off but it won’t budge.
CHLOE
Strong magnets, I’ll give them
that.
MICHELLE
Mark...can we play...please?
MARK
Babe, we’re out at Rotto at you
want us to waste our day on this?
Michelle pouts her lips out.
MICHELLE
No sex until we play.
MARK
Do you really think that I...
Michelle looks at Mark with unnerving eyes, and he relents.
He sits down with the other three around the board.
MARK
...fine. If it’ll make you happy.
CHLOE
Who wants to go first?
MICHELLE
Ooh, me! Me!
Michelle grabs the dice and rolls them as fast as she can.
She rolls a ’4’ and a ’3’.
MICHELLE
(smiling)
Seventh heaven.
JORDAN
Shit, check it out!
The piece moves around the board by itself. The three lean
in to the middle of the board; eerie green text seems to be
floating in the black nothingness.
11.
JORDAN
What does it say?
MICHELLE
(reading)
Sharp teeth rip...and blood will
seep...feared by all...into the
deep.
The group look at each other, shocked.
MARK
(impressed)
Awesome! Fucking oath it’s not like
Mousetrap!
JORDAN
What does it mean?
Suddenly, the boat shakes as something large smashes into
the side. Michelle screams, and Mark jumps up.
MICHELLE
What was that?!
The group make their way to the side of the boat, where a
large dent has been made.
MARK
My boat!
CHLOE
It’s not your boat.
Mark grabs a fishing spear and circles the boat.
MARK
Whatever it was...it’s dead.
Mark walks to the edge and looks down. He turns back to the
other three.
MARK
Nobody messes with...
Before Mark can finish his sentence, the boat is rammed
again. Mark flies backwards over the side of the boat.
CHLOE
(screaming)
Mark!
The three run to the side, where Mark emerges about 5m from
the boat.
12.
JORDAN
You OK?
MARK
Fine...
MICHELLE
(screaming)
Behind you!
Michelle points behind Mark, where a huge dorsal fin has
appeared, making it’s way towards Mark. He begins to swim
towards the back of the boat while the others yell out loud.
JORDAN
Hurry! Go, Mark!
CHLOE
Come on!
Mark makes it to the back and jumps onto the boat just as
the massive shark rears it’s head and clamps down onto the
engine. The screams of the four are drowned out by the
screeching sound of the engine snapping off and being
dragged down into the depths by the shark.
MICHELLE
(holding Mark)
Thank God you’re OK!
MARK
I’m fine...nearly had the prick.
JORDAN
What the hell was that!?
CHLOE
From the size and girth of
mouth...a Great White. A big one,
too.
MARK
You don’t say.
Mark looks towards the game.
MARK
Sharp teeth? Blood will seep?
Mark lunges over and grabs the dice, and rolls them. He gets
a ’3’ and a ’2’, and his token begins to move.
13.
JORDAN
(indignant)
What did you do that for?!
MARK
Nobody attacks me and doesn’t let
me take a swing back.
CHLOE
Read it out.
MARK
(reading)
Enjoy the calm...before the
storm...but just beware...it’s not
the norm.
MICHELLE
The storm?
JORDAN
That can’t be good.
The four look up in horror as storm clouds begin to roll in,
seemingly from nowhere. The wind picks up dramatically, and
the waves begin to crash into the side of the boat.
MARK
We’ve got to get to shore!
CHLOE
And how do you propose we do that
with no engine, genius?
JORDAN
Look out!
Jordan points towards a large wave that is coming their way.
It buffets them all and throws a screaming Michelle out of
the boat. Rain is now pouring, and the sound of thunder and
flash of lightning dominates the scene.
MARK
Michelle!
The waves buffet the boat around easily, and Jordan vomits
onto the deck. He spots the game and instinctively grabs it,
closing it up and holding it to his chest.
MARK
Hold on! We’re gonna hit the...
Mark’s sentence cuts short as the boat smashes into the
reef. The three are thrown into the unruly ocean.
14.
CUT TO - EXT. BEACH
Jordan’s eyes fly open and he looks around; he has washed up
on the beach. Looking up, the storm has disappeared, and the
boat lays at the bottom of the reef.
MARK
Hey...buddy...you OK?
Mark stands behind his friend looking in decent shape.
JORDAN
Is...is everyone OK?
MARK
It could have been a lot worse.
Mark points further down the beach, where Chloe seems to be
comforting a bleeding Michelle.
MARK
You mind telling me what the hell
just happened?
JORDAN
Why would I know?
MARK
You find some crazy beating chest
at the bottom of the reef...and
then I’m attacked by a shark, and a
freak storm fucks us right over?
JORDAN
Coincidence.
MARK
You saw the clues...the game sent
those things!
JORDAN
That’s illogical...we should be
more worried about getting home.
Mark looks slightly guilty.
MARK
Now, don’t blow your top, but...
JORDAN
You did alert the Coast Guard of
your ’change in plans’, didn’t you?
15.
MARK
Not exactly.
For the first time, Jordan looks angry.
JORDAN
Not exactly? Mark, we’re stuck on
Rottnest Island with no food, no
water, and nobody knows where we
are!
MARK
Dude...you need to chill.
JORDAN
I told you this was a bad idea,
didn’t I? You think you’d listen to
me, but noooooo!
Chloe waves from the distance.
CHLOE
Can you two argue about whose cock
is bigger later? Come over here!
Mark and Jordan angrily make their way towards Chloe, who
points to an object on the beach. It is the game.
MARK
Son of a bitch...
MICHELLE
(upset)
Take it away! It made us crash!
JORDAN
No, an extreme cold front made us
crash. Let’s not go crazy.
CHLOE
A cold front here? At this time of
year? Don’t bother arguing about
the climate with me, Jordan.
Chloe opens up the game.
CHLOE
Besides, you haven’t read what I
just did.
MARK
The other side? Adventurers beware;
do not begin unless you intend to
(MORE)
16.
MARK (cont’d)finish. The exciting consequences
of the game will vanish only when a
player has reached Jumanji and
called out it’s name.
JORDAN
It’s?
CHLOE
That wasn’t what I meant.
Chloe takes out a note from her pocket.
CHLOE
This was stuck in the corner of the
game...pretty heavy stuff.
Chloe hands the note to Mark.
MARK
(reading)
If you are reading this...DO NOT
ROLL THE DICE. This game is pure
evil and any attempts at playing it
will only lead to pain and
suffering for all involved.
MICHELLE
Oh, God...
MARK
...however, if you read this after
you’ve begun to play...take this
advice. Forget logic, forget
reality...this game is real. Work
together, stay alive. That’s how we
won the game...there is hope for
you yet. It’s signed Sarah Whittle
and Alan Parrish, 1969.
Mark crumples up the note and throws it away.
MARK
Told you it’s real.
JORDAN
...it’s not. I’ll prove it.
Jordan grabs the dice and rolls them quickly. He gets a ’5’
and a ’4’.
17.
MICHELLE
No! What have you done!?
JORDAN
Look...I’m winning already!
They all lean in to watch the eerie green text appear.
JORDAN
Beware of the ground on which you
stand, the beach is quicker than
the sand.
Michelle screams out loud as the very sand they are on
begins to consume them; the beach is now quicksand. Chloe
manages to grab the game and roll to safety, but the others
are already waist deep.
MARK
Now do you believe me!?
CHLOE
Stop moving! Quicksand pulls you
down quicker the more you move.
Chloe stands up and runs to a palm tree, breaking off a
strong branch.
CHLOE
(calm)
Now, I’m going to pull you out one
by one...nice and easy...
MICHELLE
(screaming)
Me first!
Chloe extends the branch to Michelle, who grabs it and
starts trying to swim through. She bumps into Mark and
forces him further down.
MARK
Watch it, Michelle!
Michelle sighs in relief as she is lifted onto safe ground.
CHLOE
Jordan, your turn.
Chloe calmly extends it to Jordan, who expertly uses it to
help himself out. Mark’s head is nearly underneath when
Chloe extends it to him.
18.
CHLOE
Come on, Mark...it’s right there.
Mark grunts in effort as his hands burst through the sand
and grab onto the branch. He is helped out just as his head
is going under. The four collapse onto the ground out of
breath. Mark rolls over and kisses his sister on the cheek.
MARK
You...you saved us.
CHLOE
...for now.
Chloe looks at the game.
CHLOE
We have to finish the game.
MICHELLE
(scared)
Why?
CHLOE
Help won’t come in time...we’ve got
no food and no water. If what the
game says is true...that the
consequences of the game will be
reversed when it’s finished...then
we’ll get the boat back.
JORDAN
How can you be sure?
CHLOE
I can’t...but what other choice do
we have?
The four look at each other in acceptance.
MARK
She’s right.
CHLOE
Never thought I’d hear you utter
those words, bro.
Chloe grabs the board game.
CHLOE
But I’d be happier facing the game
away from the quicksand, thank you.
CUT TO - INT. CLEARING IN BUSHES
19.
The group make their way into a large clearing in the thick
scrub of the island. Chloe sets the game down in the middle,
and the four sit around.
MICHELLE
(scared)
What else will come out?
JORDAN
Look at the cover...it’s got
monkeys, elephants, rhinos...and a
man?
Jordan points to the picture of Van Pelt.
MICHELLE
Who is he?
JORDAN
Whoever he is, I hope he can help.
Chloe grabs the dice and rustles them in her hands.
CHLOE
Personally, I’m praying for the
monkeys.
Chloe rolls the dice, and gets a ’2’ and ’1’. Her piece
moves along, and they lean in to read the text.
CHLOE
Marching strong...almost
unseen...bite burns like fire...God
save the Queen.
