DESCRIPTION

Read the July/August 2014 issue of Congregation Beth Israel's monthly Bulletin. Congregation Beth Israel is the original and largest Reform synagogue in the state of Oregon. Since 1858 we have been the center of Reform Jewish life for the Pacific Northwest. Beneath our dome is a spiritual home, a place of community and friendship, a place to be inspired through prayer, a place for lifelong learning, and a place where every person makes a difference.

Adrienne Wallace ReedAdrienne Reed will become Bat Mitzvah during the 5:00 PM Havdalah service on July 5th. She is the daughter of Paula and Scott Reed, younger sister of Kaela, granddaughter of members Deborah and Lance Caldwell and Richard Garfinkle and Karla Green, and great-granddaughter of the late Felice Driesen. Adrienne attends

Conestoga Middle School in Beaverton. She is a high-level cheer and dance competitor with Styleshock, a private all-star training facility. For her Mitzvah Project, she has been working with Team Shine, Styleshock’s cheerleading team for athletes experiencing special needs. Started in January of 2008, Team Shine is the first such team in Oregon, and the competitors have enjoyed many rewarding seasons, this past year earning another championship at the USA All-Star Championships in Anaheim, California. Adrienne has enjoyed assisting with the choreography and practice sessions all year and looks forward to her future involvement. To learn more about Styleshock and Team Shine, please visit their website: styleshockcheeranddance.com/programs/special-needs.

Jordan Miles TaylorJordan Taylor will become Bar Mitzvah on July 12th. He is the son of Lisa and Howard Taylor and older brother of Jamie. Jordan attends Cedar Park Middle School. Inspired by his tutor, Avrel Nudelman, Jordan has selected the Robison Jewish Health Center for his Mitzvah Project, helping to lead Shabbat services monthly. He also will be

assisting at various activities and programs, interacting with the residents and learning about their life stories. The Robison Jewish Health Center holds a special place within our community. It serves as a shelter to elders and adults with special needs and allows them to live in comfort, independence, and dignity while keeping their Jewish values. Jordan enjoys engaging with the residents, who are always happy to welcome youngsters for visits or at programs: www.cedarsinaipark.org/get-involved/volunteer.

Jeremy Jace LinverJeremy (Mo to his family) Linver will become Bar Mitzvah on July 19th. He is the son of Brian and Tamy Linver and younger brother of sister Corey. Jeremy is a student at Riverdale. For his Mitzvah Project he is working with Tualatin Valley Youth Football League, a tackle-based football program for 3rd-8th grade youth

in the Tualatin Valley and Portland metropolitan area in Oregon. The TVYFL is a non-profit football club whose goal is to provide safe and enjoyable athletic competition. With severe funding cuts to school athletic programs – an estimated $3.2 billion over the past three years – fewer kids are involved in team sports. While TVYFL does offer some player scholarships, the overwhelming majority of players are responsible for their own registration fees. TVYFL has seen a sharp decline in participation levels over the past few years because families just don’t have the money to cover the fees. Jeremy is partnering with TVYFL and Funding Factory to collect and recycle unwanted electronics, raising funds to offset

the registration fees for families in need. He is organizing an email campaign to parents and students to spread the word about the electronics drive at Jamborees this summer. To learn more or to help, please visit their website: www.tvyfl.org.

Liliana Helen AdamsLily Adams will become Bat Mitzvah on August 9th. She is the daughter of Stephanie and Jacob Adams and the younger sister of Lukas. Lily attends Sherwood Middle School and has chosen to partner with Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for her Mitzvah Project. She has organized a group of her classmates

to create Get Well cards for the patients at Doernbecher. They will deliver the cards to the hospital and will also spend time with a staff member who will explain the services provided to children in our community. Sometimes something as simple as Get Well wishes from a stranger will help to reassure a child who is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Lily learned this mitzvah from her family and through her studies at Beth Israel and will continue to share kindness and thoughtfulness throughout her life. Visit the Doernbecher website to learn how you can lend your support: www.ohsu.edu/xd/health/services/doernbecher/how-to-help/volunteer.

Harrison WintersHarrison Winters will become Bar Mitzvah on August 16th. He is the son of Robert and Andrea Winters and older brother of Logan. Harrison attends Whitford Middle School in Beaverton and has been working regularly at Sunshine Pantry since June 2012. A special organization for many Beth Israel students and families, Sunshine

Pantry serves the greater Beaverton population, providing food and grocery services through their warehouse. Harrison and his grandmother have worked together maintaining the stock on the shelves and distributing food bags throughout the community. You can learn more at www.sunshinepantry.org.

Kiana Isabel GellmanKiana Gellman will become Bat Mitzvah on August 23rd. She is the daughter of Juliana and Richard Gellman, younger sister of Elise, and older sister of Jonas and Apollo. A student at West Sylvan Middle School, Kiana and her family are embarking on a two-week medical mission to Peru in October to work with SIGN: Surgical

Implantation Generation Network, an organization that creates equality of fracture care through the world. SIGN collaborates with surgeons in developing countries to advance orthopedic implants and training that will help them to heal the severely broken bones of their patients. Kiana’s participation in this mission is two-fold: as a fluent Spanish speaker, she will be helping to translate for the patients and medical professionals. She is also collecting toys and personal hygiene items for the villagers in the remote areas the family will be visiting. You can learn more about SIGN at signfracturecare.org.

Upcoming Events Our Leadership

Confirmed. And Inspiring.by Rabbi Michael Z. Cahana

“ . . .you shall keep a feast to me in the year...the Feast of Harvest, the first fruits of your labors which you have sown in the field.”

(Ex. 23:15-16)

I was awed.

In early June, the Jewish community celebrated one of the three major festivals of the year: Shavuot, the “Feast of Weeks.” As with most Biblical holidays, Shavuot has both an agricultural and a historic meaning. It is a time of harvest and a time when we celebrate the giving of the 10 Commandments at Sinai.

The holiday is ancient. But just over 200 years ago, the Reform Movement created a new ceremony, Confirmation, and a few decades later began linking it to this sacred day. Confirmation was conceived as a statement of personal faith by the young people in a temple’s religious school. Unusually, it is held in 10th grade, when students are more mature and more capable of articulating what Judaism means to them than they are at Bar/Bat Mitzvah age.

We bring our young people to see the pictures of previous Confirmation classes going back over 100 years in our congregation’s history. Maybe some of their parents and grandparents were confirmed at this synagogue. We remind them that they are now a part of our Temple’s long and meaningful history, as their class picture will soon grace the wall. Perhaps one day, their children will look at their picture as they prepare for Confirmation. L’dor v’dor – from generation to generation.

This year, as was true last year, our 10th grade students had the privilege of being taught by Rabbi Joseph and were inspired by her passion for Social Justice. Towards the end of the school year, she challenged them to each write a personal statement of their Jewish identity, declaring what Judaism means to them.

I was so inspired by the words of these students, which I heard for the first time that evening. It means so much to me to witness what Judaism means to them. I wanted to share a few short excerpts from several students’ speeches with you:

• Confirmation is the start of a journey of self-discovery and Jewish identity at a time in our lives that is so filled with confusion and panic and uncertainty and questioning. We allow ourselves to turn these things into hope and possibility and excitement and intrigue, letting ourselves emerge from doubt and not feel ashamed for thinking things through and coming up with our own conclusions.

• Being Jewish is more than just going to temple; it is a responsibility I have to me and to others.

• To me, being a Jewish adult is an action. It’s not just your family, or your identity, or your new ability to read from the Torah, or believing in God… In order to really be a Jewish adult, you have to live the values, the morals, and the ethics – not only live your life by them but shape your world around them.

• I wanted to be confirmed to solidify my place in the Jewish world and continue to do and learn meaningful things. I will be certain to always carry my Jewish values with me and uphold the ideals that Judaism has instilled in me, not because I have to, but because I want to.

I’ve put more excerpts on the Temple’s web site: http://www.bethisrael-pdx.org/education/middle-high-school.

Shavuot is a holy day in which we celebrate the “first fruits” of our labors. As a Jewish educator, I am so proud seeing these first fruits from your young people – their growing commitment to Jewish life and the Jewish people.

CBI Book Group Sunday, September 7, 9:00 AMHerbert & Shirley Semler Board Room

The book group will be taking a hiatus over the summer, but we’ve already chosen our first book for the fall! Everyone is welcome to join us for a morning of pleasant literary discussion. There is no need to sign up.

September’s selection is The Street Sweeper by Elliot Perlman.

Portland Jewish Book MonthSunday, November 23, 10:30 AMPollin ChapelSpeaker: Ruchama King Feuerman

Mark your calendars! Ruchama King Feuerman, author of In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist, will be speaking at CBI for Portland Jewish Book Month. In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist has been chosen as the One Book, One Community portion of PJBM this year. On November 23rd, Feuerman will speak about her move to Israel

from Nashville as she sought to find her spiritual center and how she came to write this fascinating book.

The book details the confluence of an Orthodox Jewish man from New York who moves to Israel and becomes one of the followers of a Kabbalist; a woman who is seeking to meet a spiritual man; and a deformed Palestinian who works on the Temple Mount. Their lives become intertwined with the questions of who owns relics, what is truth, and who they really are.

The book is available online or at Annie Bloom’s Books (7834 SW Capitol Highway) and will make for great summer reading.

That there is no way to get from here to thereExcept by joining hands, marching Together.

- Mishkan T’fillah, p. 157

These are words taken from a prayer we read every Friday night at CBI. They resonate loudly and emphasize how we at Congregation Beth Israel feel about our role in providing a strong and vital voice for Reform Judaism. We need to join hands and march together, welcoming everyone and providing lifelong learning to all members of every family.

Your generosity – for which we are incredibly thankful – makes so much of what we do here at CBI possible. We are highly committed to opening our doors and providing a community for every interested Jewish individual and family. It is our desire to break down the economic barriers to Temple membership. Demands on our budget are heavy, so we turn to you to help fill the gap in our annual budget. Donations made through our fundraising efforts enable us to continue to create Jewish memories and impact Jewish lives. Whether you give a basic or enhanced annual contribution, respond to a Mitzvah Moment request, provide extra funds for our Religious School program, or donate to our Every Family Initiative campaign, we thank you. We thank you not only for opening your pocketbook but also for opening your heart and helping us touch the lives of so many members of our community on so many levels and in so many ways.

So thank you, thank you, thank you for caring and investing with us. Your support enabled us to surpass our $200,000 goal for the 2014 fiscal year and make a difference.

Our Leadership

The 2014-15 Board of Trustees was elected at the 156th Annual Meeting on May 16th. We welcome our newest board members:

David Sarasohn has been writing for The Oregonian since 1983, and he and his wife Lisa have belonged to Congregation Beth Israel since 1977. He has written three books on ludicrously diverse subjects and for three decades attempted to eat his way through the entire Portland restaurant world. His columns have won a National Headliner Award, a Casey

Medal for Distinguished Journalism, and the Oregon Food Bank Founder’s Award. This is his second tour on the Board of Trustees. He is happy to return because his two sons both attended Beth Israel through high school, and he thinks they turned out okay.

Bob Rosenbaum and his wife, Joanie, both grew up as members of Congregation Beth Israel and were married here in 1967. After a brief time away while Bob pursued his neurology training, the couple returned in 1975. Their two grown children, Julie and Mark, are married and have their own families in Texas and California, respectively. Since retiring

from his neurology practice at Providence Hospital two years ago, Bob has kept busy volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, attending classes at Portland State University (primarily in art and geology), studying Italian, hiking, biking, bird watching, and traveling. He and Joanie have always been involved with the Jewish community through the years, either through synagogue life, attending classes, or Federation, and he looks forward to joining the Temple Board as a continuation of that commitment to community.

A plastic surgeon in Portland, Yale Popowich was born and raised in Philadelphia. A graduate of Columbia University, the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Stanford University, and OHSU, his pathway to medicine was unorthodox, preceded by six years in the independent film business, working on features such as A Room

with a View, Salaam Bombay, Drugstore Cowboy, and Stop Making Sense. He and his wife, Tina, have two boys, Harry and Julian, and are also the proud parents of Winston, their English bulldog.

Stacy Friedman lives in Beaverton with his wife Sharon and daughters Jessica (11) and Mara (9). A saxophone and clarinet player, he is a member of a big band and has blown shofar at Congregation Beth Israel’s High Holy Day services for the past two years. He works as an independent consultant to the casino gaming industry, providing game design and

mathematical analysis services to game development companies and subject matter expert testimony for gaming-related lawsuits. He graduated from Harvard in 1996.

Robin McCoy was born and raised in Portland and has been a member of Congregation Beth Israel from childhood. She has many fond memories of CBI and is excited to have her 6-year-old daughter, Molly, make her own memories here as she learns about Judaism and develops new friendships in our religious school. A developmental-behavioral

pediatrician, she works at Children’s Program in Multnomah Village. In her free time, Robin enjoys running, hiking, reading, and spending time with husband Steve, daughter Molly, and the family dog, Abbey.

Lisa and Jonathan Greenleaf & family on the death of her father, Gus Mueller, on May 27.

Michael and Margie Anton just relocated to Portland from South Florida. Over the last ten years, they visited Portland multiple times, loving it more each visit, and quickly determined that it would be an ideal place to retire. This dream came true upon Michael’s retirement last December from Merrill Lynch; Margie had already retired after thirty-eight years with American Airlines, where she worked in flight service management. Although it was hard to give up their season tickets to Miami Hurricanes football games, Michael consoles himself with his love of microbrewed beer. Margie is an avid knitter although she spends more time outdoors now, enjoying Portland’s temperate weather after South Florida’s heat and humidity. They live in the Pearl, have joined 24-Hour Fitness, and just purchased new bicycles to enjoy the road ahead.

Steve and Sherry Salomon come to us from Rockville, Maryland, where Steve worked for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission as a health physicist, economist, and liaison to State, Local and Tribal Governments. He also worked briefly in the USSR in the wake of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident and for nine months was a National Academy of Sciences exchange scientist in semiconductor physics developing computers at Science City, Novosibirsk, Siberia, during the Nixon-Breznev years. He is a graduate of MIT, Sorbonne, and Purdue and is a Littauer Fellow at Harvard.

Sherry has a B.A. in Drama Speech Education from the University of Oklahoma and an M.A. in Counseling from George Washington University. She also has a Yoga teaching certificate and is searching for a suitable studio. She worked part time in the Montgomery County Public Schools while the couple raised their two children. Rachel (28) has a Master’s in Middle Eastern Affairs from Ben-Gurion University and works in Israel as a journalist. Daniel (34) has a Master’s in Theology and is an environmental writer here in Portland. Sherry and Steve “are interested in the spiritual nature of Congregation Beth Israel. We are searching for those who are interested in nature, hiking, bicycling, picnicking, and camping in beautiful Oregon, closest to heaven.”

Welcome, New CongregantsCONGREGATION BETH ISRAEL WARMLY

WELCOMES OUR NEWEST MEMBERS

Welcoming Casey Barkmeier to the CBI TeamCongregation Beth Israel is thrilled to welcome and introduce Casey Barkmeier, our new Facilities Manager. Casey comes to us from the City of Lake Oswego’s Facilities

Department. Casey has a true understanding of a 24/7 operation and programming, as well as an appreciation for diverse buildings and the different levels of repair and maintenance needed for their continued operation. He also has non-profit building repair and maintenance experience, having worked for The Pixie Project prior to his position with the City of Lake Oswego. He also has experience with capital projects.

Casey is in the process of building a new team. As we add new staff to our facilities department, we will let you know. In the interim, you will notice their new uniforms (blue shirts with the CBI dome logo), which will help better identify our facilities staff to our members and guests.

Casey is passionate about his work and the opportunity to be a part of the CBI team. His outside hobbies include cooking, boxing, wrestling, and restoring vintage Vespas.

Casey grew up in Lincoln, Illinois. In a story not too different from Pierce Ethier, our first Facilities Manager, Casey bought a one-way ticket to Portland about 15 years ago, looking for a better place to live. He hasn’t looked back and loves all that Portland and the great Pacific Northwest have to offer.

A New YearAs new chairs of the Social Action Committee, we are looking forward to working with members of our committee and the synagogue to practice tikkun olam in our community and beyond. The remarkable Ilene Davidson and her predecessors have established many amazing and meaningful programs that the SAC will continue to support. However, we will be expanding into some new areas, as well as increasing the community participation in and the outreach of our current programs.

One area that we will be promoting this year is advocacy. We have many voices and want to use them to address larger issues important to our community, such as hunger, immigration, and education, to name a few.

In addition, we will be doing many of our usual activities, but let’s highlight a few upcoming ones:

Get to know our neighbors Sunday, July 20: Summer Barbeque at NW TowersWe will need help with food preparation and setup, as well as some experienced grill masters to help cook tasty burgers and hot dogs. Most of all, we would like to have synagogue members join us and

get to know our neighbors. Food preparation will begin at 10:30 AM; watch the website and email blasts for more details on timing and needs.

Help our neighborhood children get a strong start to the school yearFriday, August 22: Shabbat on the PlazaSchool backpacks and supplies for the NW Towers Annex As in past years, we will be providing school supplies for the children of NW Towers. To ensure that the children get exactly what is needed, we will put together a wishlist of items when we get closer to the date. Your donations can be bought online or brought to services on August 22. SAC will be sponsoring the evening’s service and providing a dessert.

Please note that our meetings are open to any synagogue member, and we would love more committee members to help us create a productive and meaningful year for the SAC at CBI.

SAC co-chairs,

Elizabeth Friedenwald & Rebecca Friedenwald-Fishman

Brotherhood Rafting VoyageSunday, August 10, 8:00 AMMeet @ CBICost: $23 for Brotherhood members, $38 for guests

As you may recall, in 2013 the Brotherhood embarked on their maiden voyage white water rafting down the Deschutes River in Maupin, Oregon. We had so much fun the last time that we’ll be reliving the event with the expectation that we’ll once again experience a super fun time splashing in the cool river and soaking up warm rays. The cost for the event is $23 for Brotherhood members and $38 for their guests. In addition, free passes will be awarded to anyone who spots or retrieves any of the Brotherhood members from the 2013 trip who were lost at sea.

Our caravan leaves en masse from Portland at approximately 8:00 AM on Sunday, August 10th. At 11:30 AM, we’ll raise anchor and push off into the rapids. If you’d like to be part of the adventure, please contact the Brotherhood’s fleet commander, Bob Winthrop, at [email protected].
