America is much more than a geographical fact. It is a political and moral fact — the first community in which men set out in principle to institutionalize freedom, responsible government, and human

CRUISE IN 2017

Page 7

WHERE I HAVE AND HAVE NOT BEEN?

I have been in many places, but I have never been in Cahoots. Apparently you can’t go there alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I’ve have never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport, you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my family, friends and those whom I have worked with.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump to get there and I am not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go and I try not to visit there too often. I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I am getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense. It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up one’s heart. At my age I need all the stimuli I can get. Author unknown.

IN THIS CLASS YOU WILL LEARN TO:

View falls as controllable *set goals for increasing activity

Make changes to reduce fall risks at home

Exercise to increase strength and balance

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

 Anyone concerned about falls

Anyone interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength

Anyone who has fallen in the past

Anyone who has restricted activities because of falling concerns

Are you concerned about falling? Interested in improving balance, flexibility, and strength? Falls are preventable!

GAIN CONFIDENCE

WITH MATTER OF BALANCE (MOB).

Falls are more common than

strokes and can be just as serious.

A New Class is Starting on Thursdays for 8 weeks August 17—Oct. 5 from 1—3 pm.

Call or drop by the office to register. Space is limited to 12 people.

DETECTIVE BILL DEWEESE VISITED THE LAURELVILLE SENIOR CENTER SPEAKING ON THE PROBLEM OF PHONE SCAMS

A few of the scams specifically targeting Seniors are: • Sweepstakes scams, run by perpetrators who contact victims by phone, tell them they've won a financial prize, and then require advance payment of a fee to collect the purported winnings. • Computer scams in which callers impersonate

representatives of well-known technology companies and convince victims to allow remote access to their home computers to check for problems. The scammers then charge fees to remove purported electronic viruses and/or have taken personal information from your computer.

• Elder financial abuse, in some cases involving relatives or friends who gain access to victims' identification data, bank accounts or other records.

IRS SCAMS— Scammers impersonate IRS who threaten "the marshals will be in your house within an hour" unless you pay what they claim are overdue taxes.

Call the Sheriff’s Office if you feel you’ve been scammed—740-385-2131. Call Adult Protective Service if you or someone else is or may be abused. 740-380-4039

CRIME ON ELDERLY—GRANDPARENT SCAM

The scammer had enough personal information that seemed

to make his request convincing. He knew the elderly

woman’s husband was in the hospital when he called. So

the older adult sent off the requested amount.

“’Hi Grandma’,” Kitty remembers hearing when she picked up the phone

one day in January. “And I said, ‘Billy, hi how are you.'”

What started as a seemingly innocent phone call turned into an elaborate story, leading Kitty, a Phoenix resident who didn't want to give her last name, to think her grandson was in jail and needed money right away. “’I'm calling you because I know you can keep a secret and I don’t want the rest of the family to know,'” said Kitty, recalling what she heard on the phone.

But it wasn’t her grandson. It was a scammer, pretending to be her grandson.

Kitty was in a panic thinking her grandson was in trouble and needed money wired right away to the Dominican Republic. “I was helping my grandson,” said Kitty. “I truly love my grandson. I would do anything for my family.”

It’s a common scam. Most businesses have procedures in place to recognize the signs. In Kitty’s case, four different businesses stopped her from wiring that money, telling her it was against their policy. But Kitty didn’t believe them and instead she eventually went to a big box store in her town. Over three days Kitty wired a total of $5,800 to the Dominican Republic.

ACROSS THE NATION, CON ARTISTS ARE SCAMMING GRANDPARENTS OUT OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS BY POSING AS GRANDCHILDREN IN DISTRESS. In one instance, Michigan, grandparents were taken for $33,000. They wire transferred $3,000 to someone they thought was their grandson after he called and claimed he was caught fishing without a license in Canada and needed to pay a $3,000 fine. They were taken for an additional $30,000 after the supposed grandson called again to say that alcohol and drugs were found when his boat was searched, and he needed $30,000 to post bond to get out of a Canadian jail.

A variation of the scam may involve two scammers -- the first scammer calls and poses as a grandchild under arrest. The second scammer, posing as some type of law enforcement officer, then gets on the phone with the grandparent and explains what fines need to be paid. Alternatively, the scammer may pretend to be a family friend or neighbor.

A common theme of the scam across the nation is the caller's request for the grandparent to wire money through Western Union or MoneyGram or to provide bank account routing numbers. Wiring money is like sending cash; there are no protections for the sender. Typically there is no way you can reverse the transaction, trace the money, or recover payment from the telephone con artists. Be suspicious when you receive a telephone call where: A grandchild calls you from a far away location. The grandchild says, "It's me," or "It's your grandson," or "It's your favorite grandchild." The grandchild is in some trouble or some type of distress. The caller asks for money to be wire transferred. Don’t be rushed. People often make poor decisions when they are hurried. If it sounds “too good to be true,” IT IS!
