Now the chicken eggs, the multiutility

highly nutritious edible articles are going

to explore a new horizon for the welfare of

the mankind. The most wanted drugs to

act against the cancer would be available in sufficient

quantity from the eggs of transgenic hens and the work is

going on in full swing in the Institute of Roslin near

Edinburgh, UK.

A team at The Roslin Institute, near Edinburgh, UK -

where, 10 years ago, Dolly appeared, the sheep that was

the first ever cloned organism - has created genetically

modified chickens whose eggs contain cancer-fighting

proteins in their white. The institute has produced five

generations of transgenic birds, some 500 individuals.

The idea of producing the proteins involved in treatments

in flocks of laying hens means they can produce in bulk,

they can produce cheaply and indeed the raw material for

this production system is quite literally chicken feed.

Drugs obtained from chicken eggs would be cheaper and

easier to make. One of the characteristics of lots of medical

treatments these days is that they're very expensive. The

project is on the way for 15 years, and another five years of

trials and 10 years for developing drugs will follow.

The Idea of modification of diet with different fatty acid was carried out by Cruickshank in 1934. Dyerberg and Bang (1979) found positive effect of Omega-3 fatty acids for Heart and Cardiovascular diseases. Later on in (1980) designer egg rich in n-3 fatty acids with anti oxidants was designed by feeding flax seeds in layer diet and was called as Profession Sim's Designer egg. Farell (1988) developed enriched egg with folic acid and iron. Lession (2004) in Canada produced lutein enriched egg. In India Narahari (2004) developed Herbal enriched designer egg (HEDE). Professor S.K. Taneja (2008) at Punjab University also developed Omega-3 eggs. DSM (2008) enriched yolk with pigment and vitamins.

Keeping in view the work carried out by different Scientists HOAVA Omega-3 egg has been developed by changing the diet of hens for Dr. Kansal's Herbal Odourless eggs.

HOAVA

H in HOAVA eggs stands for herbal, O for odorless & organic; A for free from antibiotics residues; V for rich in vitamins and A for free from aflatoxins residues. 100 ml liquid of HOAVA eggs contents are also rich in Omega-3 fatty acids (400mg), DHA (100mg), CLA (400mg) Lutein (125mg) and Vitamin E (15.78mg), which are beneficial for human health. The eggs are enriched with Omega-3, DHA, CLA, Lutein, Yolk Pigment and very much rich in different vitamins, keeping in view the health of human beings. This egg is also World's first egg in which all the parameters have been combined together for best health programme.

HOAVA eggs are also free from pesticide residues as well as free from Salmonella, E coli and other bacteria. Being odorless, egg drink can be prepared from these eggs. The layers are given vegetarian feed along with a mixture of 16 herbs. There are herbal residues in the egg which are having some antibacterial properties. These eggs can be kept at room temperature for more than 8 weeks without any bacterial growth.

OMEGA-3 The HOAVA e g g s a r e r i c h i n monounsa tura ted & polyunsaturated fatty acids. Omega-3 & Omega-6 fatty acids are essential because these are not synthesized by human body.

When there is deficiency of Omega-3 fatty acids & DHA, the following symptoms are observed.

A. Excessive thirst, frequent urination, rough or dry 'bumpy' skin, dry dull or 'lifeless hair, dandruff,

and soft or brittle nails.

B. Allergic conditions like, eczema, asthma, hay fever etc.

C. Visual symptoms such as poor night vision, sensitivity to bright light or visual disturbances.

D. There is poor concentration difficulties in working memory, and distractibility.

E. Emotional sensitivity, such as depression, excessive mood swings or undue anxiety.

F. Sleep problems especially difficulty in sleeping at night and waking up in the morning.

Benefits of LUTEIN

Lutein is a carotenoid and its main role is in eye health, specifically in reducing the risk of Age related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which occurs when the fragile center of the retina(the macula) deteriorates from a lifetime of slow but steady damage. The macula is a small area of the retina responsible for central vision, and high visual acuity.

Poor macular health can cause oxidative stress within the retina, leading to a loss of central vision.

Secondly its plays a role for maintaining healthy skin. Thirdly its helps in improving cardiovascular health by reducing arterial wall thickening, a

c o m p o n e n t o f arthrosclerosis.

Benefits of Vitamin E for Health

(a) Antioxidant and n o n - a n t i o x i d a n t . : Vitamin E is since long recognized as the body's major l ipid soluble antioxidant and thus is fundamental in maintaining the integrity and functionality of the cellular membranes of all cells of the human body. As an antioxidant, vitamin E acts within cell membranes, protecting unsaturated fatty acid from oxidation. In doing so, the vitamin gets oxidized and must be recycled back to its active form, typically by vitamin C. Therefore the two vitamins are closely interlinked and often investigated jointly.

Due to its role as an antioxidant, vitamin E has been suggested for all conditions associated with increased oxidative stress, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, disorders involving chronic inflammation, preeclampsia cancer neurologic disorders, endurance exercise increased exposure to oxidants and others.

In addition to its antioxidant function, recent research has demonstrated specific role of vitamin E in signal transduction, gene expression, and regulation of other cellular functions.

(b) Immune function: Immune functions decline with age, which may related to increased vulnerability of elderly people to infections and other diseases. Numerous studies suggest a role for vitamin E in maintaining optimal immune status later in life.

(c) Heart Health: Vitamin E has long been credited with a role in preventing atherosclerosis and heart diseases due to its beneficial effects on various mechanisms involved in atherosclerosis development. Researchers at the University of Taxas Anderson Cancer Center have reported that

taking vitamin E regularly substantially reduces the incidence of lung cancer. Their studies further showed that people consuming the high amount of vitamin E had the greatest benefit. A comparison of the persons taking the most vitamin E with those taking the least resulted in 61% reduction in lung cancer risk.

Two landmark studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that those who took at least 100 IU of vitamin E daily reduced their risk of heart disease by 59 to 66%. Researchers at Cambridge University in England reported that patients diagnosed to be suffering from coronary arteriosclerosis could lower their risk of having a heart attack by 77% by supplementing with 400 IU to 800 IU per day of the natural (d-Alpha tocopherol) form of vitamin E.

Enrichment with vitamins

This eggs is not only enriched with vitamin-E , but is also very much enriched with other fats soluble vitamin-A (for eye sight and other exo(skin) and internal lining (endo thelial linings) of digestive, respiratory, urinary and reproductive system, vitamin D (for calcium phosphors metabolism, 3

development of skeletal system, embryonic development, abnormalities of joints and bone growths) and water soluble vitamins like B , 12

Biotin, Folic acid, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Pyridoxine. These vitamins can be same in the table given below. Water soluble vitamins help for the blood formation, beri beri disease, migraine, liver functions, anti-carcinogenic, factors, carbohydrate and protein metabolism and reproductive problems (in ladies).

The Biological value of egg vitamins is much higher, than the vitamins consumed in the form of capsules prescribed by medical practitioners.

This egg is rich in various nutritional contents as compared to other brands of eggs and Cow milk.,

Cholesterol level

The cholesterol level in 100g of egg liquid is 306.00mg as compared to Regular egg 420.00mg which is almost more than 25% low in cholesterol content. This low level of cholesterol also good for reducing heart problems.

Allergen contents

This egg is almost free from allergens. The egg has been given more than 20 children and adult persons who were suffering from allergy due to eggs. When these eggs were served there was no symptoms of allergy in these persons.

The Eggs should be free from Aflatoxins residues. Why?

Aflatoxins are fungal metabolites (toxin) which occur in a wide variety of foods and feeds and when ingested, inhaled or observed through skin causes lowered performance, sickness or some

times death in men or animals.

These produced both acute and chronic toxicities

ranging from deleterious effects upon the central nervous, cardiovascular, pulmonary system and digestive tract, some time leading to death. Aflatoxin is associated with both toxicity and carcinogenicity in human, animal and poultry populations. Acute aflatoxicosis results in death, chronic aflatoxicosis in cancer, immune suppression and other “slow” pathological conditions. This is the reason why the eggs should be free from residues of aflatoxins.

The eggs should be free from Pesticides residues, why?

Pesticides via food are the source of several mysterious diseases like cancer, epilepsy, liver and kidney dysfunction, depression, neuritis etc..

Besides causing acute and chronic toxicities, these pesticides residues are affecting in general the immune system and other sensitive system leading to Immuno suppression and various metabolic and genetic disorders in human populations.

The food and Drugs act and the Food and Drug Regulations of Canada have set a zero tolerance level for pesticides residues in eggs.

The eggs should be free from Antibiotics and Veterinary Drug residues, why?

The antibiotics, sulfa drugs, Nirtofuran Metabolites, Nitroimidazoles drug residues in eggs can produce resistance in the human beings. Developed countries have banned the use of antibiotics in the feed or in the drinking water to the birds. It becomes difficult for Doctors to treat such patients. There is a need for sensitive test for suitable antibiotics for the treatments. The new antibiotics are much more costlier and heavy expenses needs to be done for proper treatment of patients.

The eggs are free from Salmonella, E-coli or any

other types of bacteria, why?

Salmonella and E-coli bacteria can cause typhoid,

paratyphoid, diarrhea like conditions in human

beings. It is an International problem to reduce

incidence of salmonella. This bacteria is

transmuted to the young chicks through hatching

eggs contaminated with this disease.

HOAVA Omega-3 Egg drinks

People should consume more eggs in summer as

the diet is deficient in proteins in this season. The

eggs are not any heating effect in summer, when

these eggs are consumed without addition of oil in

different recipes. Oil (ghee) is the main culprit for

high energy and heating effect. One can prepare

egg drink from these eggs. These eggs are

Odourless and very good in taste. The egg drink

can be prepared in the following manner

Procedure:

1. Break 4-6 eggs in one pot.

2. Mix well the white & yolks with egg beater.

3. Mix sugar/ sharbat concentrate as per need

for 1 liter of drink.

4. Put half liter warm water and mix the

contents very well.

5. Mix ¼ liter of cold water later on.

6. Strain the mixed contents in to another pot

with tea strainer.

7. Mix 5-6 spoons of any flavored concentrate.

8. Put Ice cubes or keep in refrigerator; the drink

will be ready for service

Zinc complexes improve feed conversionDietary zinc stimulates immunity and supports skeletal development, feathering and skin strength, etc. In addition, feeding highly bioavailable sources of zinc, such as zinc complexes, to broilers also shows improvements in gain and feed conversion.By Wiebe van der Sluis, Rooster45, Doetinchem, The Netherlands

Zinc is an essential trace element in all living systems from bacteria, plants and animals to humans. Its biological function was not understood until 1934. It took another 20 years before naturally occurring zinc deficiency was recognized as the cause of parakeratotic (hardening and cracking) lesions of the skin of pigs, and slow growth, poor feathering and abnormal skeletal development in poultry. Recent poultry literature suggests zinc deficiency in poultry is associated with footpad lesions and poor carcass quality due to scratches and skin damage. This made poultry producers and nutritionists realise that adequate dietary zinc supplementation is critical in poultry production.

Bioavailability of zinc

Zinc is primarily absorbed in the small intestine. However, it is known that binding form and other dietary ingredients can influence the bioavailability of zinc. In monogastric animals, phytate, for example, decreases zinc absorption. Dietary calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, nickel, copper and iron also affect zinc bioavailability.

There are differences in bioavailability between

various zinc sources. Most of them are quite low,

for example: the absolute bioavailability for zinc

oxide is 22%, for zinc sulphate 23% and for zinc

acetate 19%. It is also true that the

relative biological value of zinc sources

varies (see Table 1).

Growth promotion effects

Because of the low zinc content in some

feed ingredients with varying levels of

bioavailabily, it is necessary to add zinc

to poultry diets. In the European Union,

zinc diet contents are allowed up to 150

mg/kg feed. These levels cover largely

the recommended requirements for

most animals, especially when highly

bioavailable zinc complexes are

supplemented.

When feeding zinc complexes within

these legal limits, it helps decrease the

severity of footpad and skin lesions, as

well as improve feathering condition

and skeletal development. Since zinc

also stimulates the development of the

immune system, providing sufficient

bioavailable zinc results in healthier

birds. Trials conducted in various parts

of the world clearly indicate that zinc

complexes have a positive effect on

body weight and feed conversion in

broilers, as well as egg production and

shell quality in laying hens. These

effects are more notable during heat

stress.

Improved performance

Recently, researchers at Auburn

U n i v e r s i t y , A l a b a m a , U S A ,

investigated the influence of zinc

complexes on live performance and

carcass grade of broilers. They reported

that feed conversion was improved for

female broilers fed Zn complexes at 25

and 42 d of age and male broilers at 21 d

of age. In a follow up study, the same

group showed (in a trial with 1440 male

Ross broilers over 49 days) a feed:gain

of 1.701 versus 1.736 for broilers fed zinc

complexes and ordinary sulphate,

respectively (Figure 1). A summary of

22 trials from Zinpro Corporation

showed that feeding broilers zinc

complexes improved the feed efficiency

by 3 .9 points (0 .039 or a 2%

improvement) when weights were

equalized to those of the sulphate

control (Figure 2). This feed efficiency

advantage continued to persists even

when broilers were reared to heavier

weights (>3.4 kg). These results show

that providing suff ic ient z inc

complexes helps improves bird

performance.

Some zinc facts3

• Zinc is needed for immunity, cell division, cell growth, wound healing, and carbohydrate metabolism.

• Zinc is also needed for the senses of smell and taste.

• Zinc from plant sources is not as available for use by the body as the zinc from animal sources. Therefore, low-protein and vegetarian diets tend to be low in zinc.

Leading Exhibition on Poultry & Livestock Industry

Evonik Degussa India organized a seminar on low protein diets for layers at Berhampore, Odisha, India. Berhampore is primarily a layer belt with a population of approximately 1.4 million layer birds. The seminar was

well attended by around 31 delegates who included almost everyone of the local layer farming community. Mr. Utpal Adhikari, sales manager for Eastern India, welcomed the guests in local language in his opening

address. Dr. Karthik Masagounder, technical sales manager for Asia South, mentioned the importance of feeding the layer birds with low protein diets supplemented with amino acids to get the same kind of performances, particularly, in a time, when raw material prices are really volatile. In his second speech, Dr. Karthik compared the effects of herbal methionine sources with DL-Methionine in poultry diets, as layer farmers sometimes get attracted to herbal methionine due to its cheaper prices. We also took this opportunity to introduce our new probiotic, Gallipro, to the customers in this area. Dr. Saikat Saha, business development manager of Evonik Degussa India gave the vote of thanks to the customers.

Supreme Industries has been on the fore front of introducing path-breaking plastics for myriad applications in diverse industries. The company, established in 1942, offers unique roofing solutions, already popular in the industry.

Supreme's protective packaging division plays the role of a solution provider to clients in diverse industries, specifically in the application areas of Packaging & Cushioning, Insulation and Construction. The division is a part of Supreme group, who is an acknowledged leader of India's plastic industry, handling over 2,30,000 tonnes of polymers annually and having the group turnover in excess of Rs. 4,500 crore.

Supreme offers 'INSU and DURA range of products' for roofing and thermal insulation applications.

Innovative 'INSU'lations

Energy is the single largest operating expense and accounts for over $100 billion in expenses for commercial buildings each year. With a view to improve efficiency and enable conservation of energy, the Thermal Insulation Division of Supreme provides top-of-the-line insulation solutions with its 'INSU' range of products. Each of the products that Supreme offers i.e. INSUshield FR, closed cell chemically crosslinked polyethylene, INSUboard - Extruded polystyrene and INSUreflector - Radiant barrier are for the purpose of saving energy in different segments of the industry and for different applications.

Supreme's Thermal Insulation Division offers solutions in the following areas:

- Underdeck insulation in PEBs, textile units, malls, airports etc.

- Ducting Insulation in hospitals, shopping malls, airports, PEBs, IT/ BPO etc.

- Pipe insulation for split AC tubings, chiller piping, drain pipes, chilled water lines etc.

- Floor insulation in server rooms, data centres, medical & diagnostic centres, and control rooms for petrochemicals

- Overdeck and wall insulation in commercial buildings, residential buildings, cold storages etc.

In line with this, Supreme offers 'INSUreflector'- a radiant heat reflective insulation material made of polyethylene air bubble film (ABF) laminated with aluminum foil on one or both sides. The bright surface of the aluminium foil reflects 96 per cent to 99 per cent infra-red radiation received by the surface of a heated slate roof. It protects the building from undesirable heat gain. The thin reflective foil having low emissivity and high reflectivity when installed with an air space restricts the transfer of far-infrared radiation making it an ideal material to be used for underdeck application.

'INSUshield' is a non-fibrous, fire retardant ('Class O' in fire propagation and 'class 1' in surface spread of flame), closed cell, tri d imensional chemica l ly cross - l inked polyethylene foam. An ideal environment friendly insulation material, with a perfect solution for all your insulation needs for ducts, roofs, pipes, vessels, etc. The divergent advantages of 'INSUshield' are ease of installation, low thermal conductivity and good moisture and vapour resistance preventing microbial growth and optimum condensation protection.

We strongly recommend that all buildings where human effort is involved or where the process so requires, be insulated for a better working environment & productivity.

'DURAroofil' (Formerly SIL ROOFIL) are customised, light weight, resilient, soft, polymer based closed cell profiles for PEB structures.

'DURAmembrane' keep dampness at bay

DURAmembrane is a new offering in the portfolio of competent and DURAble products of the Construction Accessories Division. DURAmembrane is a new generation, cost effective solution for waterproofing of basements and roofs. It is a versatile material, capable of retaining the dryness of concrete, masonry, metal and wood structures and is resistant to salts, alkalis, and most acids. “Supreme is the only manufacturer of this type of water proofing membrane in India. It can be used for applications like - concrete roof waterproofing, basement waterproofing and also water proofing of

bathrooms & terrace gardens. DURAmembrane can not only be used in new constructions but also at the time of repair of a structure,” points out Ajay Mohta.

It does not absorb water at all. Its 'K' value does not deteriorate. “Talking about evaluation against bitumen based products we all know that bitumen disintegrates after contact with water. Further, over a period it catches fungi and also starts melting during summer, thus lowering its puncture resistant strength. The striking feature of DURAmembrane is that it has a very good puncture resistance of 199 N (Test method - ASTM E154: 1999) and being polymer based, it won't deteriorate also over a long period,” adds Mohta.

Quality at its best: A methodical, systematic and stringent approach to quality ensures durability to all their products. The company adheres to

international quality standards while manufacturing products. ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 certifications and NABL accreditation for various plants is a testimony to their serious approach to quality.

It is strongly recommend that all buildings where human effort is involved or where the process so requires, be insulated for a better working environment & productivity.

Big Dutchman today is a formidable force in the Pig and Poultry Equipment Industry World Wide.

The story started in 1938 when two brothers, Jack and Dick DeWitt invented the world's first automatic poultry feeding system (chain Feeder). This they sold around the agricultural shows in the mid west of the United States under the name of Automatic Poultry Feeder Company. The story goes that to encourage potential customers to their stand they dressed a “large” man in traditional Dutch clothing and he walked the show directing potential customers to the stand. This caused the people to say “let us go to the Big Dutchman”, hence the name of the company which we all know today Big Dutchman was founded.

The Meerpohl Family became involved in Big Dutchman in 1958 when Joseph Meerpohl acquired the agency to market Big Dutchman equipment in Germany. From that early start success came and his agency flourished under his steady guiding hand.

Over the years there have been a few twists and turns but eventually in 1985 Joseph Meerpohl structured a management buy-out of Big Dutchman from Hanson Trust and he secured the rights for worldwide sales except for North and South America. At this time as it still is today, Calveslage, the seat of the family home become the International Head Quarters for Big Dutchman and the start of the phenomenal growth begins. The growth was and still is in the main due to the company's old strengths and values which are still the basic values of the company today. These are: to be fair, never leave a problem as we should always try our very best to satisfy our customers and if we get it wrong put it right as we should never knowingly lose a customer through dissatisfaction.

The company now employs approx. 2000 people worldwide and has a turnover for 2010/11 of nearly $1.00 billion. Both the number of people and the turnover continues to grow as the demand for pig and poultry equipment continues unabated.

In Calveslage, the company's head office and the family home, there are

approximately 900 people employed; the people are involved in sales, marketing, product development, logistics, IT, accounts and H & R. We do not manufacture at our head office but simply consolidate and distribute systems for dispatch throughout the world.

At Calveslage there are over 200 engineers who design, develop and trial new innovations. These engineers work in conjunction with our engineers throughout the world to develop products suitable for the markets we serve. This level of engineering development is essential as the pig and poultry market is an ever changing market and we have to cater for our customers needs all over the world. Weekly there are new challenges to stimulate the activity within our technical departments and this ensures we stay in tune with the markets we serve. The role of the engineer is to look at the most cost effective methods of achieving the market requirements and they have to be alert to new manufacturing methods and new material which can be used. It is essential that the products we supply to our customers achieve the performance levels and length of life which our customers have come to expect from Big Dutchman.

Computerization has become a significant part of any livestock production operation and a valued management tool. Today we use computers for ventilation, feeding both wet (for pigs) and dry, lighting, egg flow, bird weighing, feed weighing, water monitoring, recording of data etc. The technology and innovation is never ending as the demands of our customers leads us forward coupled with our own views and visions for the future the new products are developed. This is evident from the awards we have achieved in the field of electronics. The first major award was a very prestigious World Poultry Award for its revolutionary Amacs Egg Flow System, this controls the flow of eggs to the packing station supplying the correct number of eggs to the grading or packing machine to optimize throughput. This is done by knowing the exact number of eggs per meter of egg belt.

Our second award came a year later in 2008 when Big Dutchman also achieved 70 years of existence. In that year the company was awarded another Gold Medal but this time by the DLG for its EggCam. The EggCam provides the information for counting and evaluating the eggs as they pass underneath this ingenious devise.

Big Dutchman is a family orientated business and family orientation allows for quick decisions and direct customer contact. Listening to our customers is why Joseph Meerpohl has always told his team to “drink tea with your customers”. This ensures as a company we listen to our customers and we should then understand their needs and wants and don't simply think we know what is required.

Being able to react quickly to change is essential as all over the world we have change in legislation, market demand and retailer requirements.

From its humble beginnings 74 years ago Big Dutchman today is truly the International

market leader, there are Big Dutchman regional head offices / logistic centers in Germany, USA, Brazil, Russia, Malaysia, China, and South Africa. In addition to this the company has over 200 representative offices and agents in over 80 countries worldwide.

The future of Big Dutchman is in safe hands with the current generation of Meerpohls and they continue to heavily invest in product development. As stated earlier we sell Pig and Poultry equipment but we also have BD AgroRenewables GmbH & Co.KG (Biogas), BD Wolking (feed mills), BD Fish (modern indoor fish farming).

India offers Big Dutchman another great opportunity to supply the company's vast range of well tried and tested products which have been successful throughout the world however they will be tailored to the Indian markets specific needs. India wants to increase food production for both its home market plus due to lower production costs India has the opportunity to export and India will grasp this opportunity. If we look at the current Indian market production and the current and future potential there is at least a decade of work in this exciting market simply helping it reduce its production costs and labour requirements. This coupled with the never ending changes in legislation which cover welfare, omissions, food safety, minimum wages and health and safety and many others the industry throughout the world will continuously be facing change. Don't forget, change is opportunity and opportunity is profit.

Change offers many opportunities for the years to come and when you consider that the

company was founded on a single product, the chain feeder, and today we cover feeding, drinking, egg production systems, egg collection, ventilation, air cleaning, manure handling etc and the range continues to grow I do not feel we will be short of work!

The success of Big Dutchman is that it is a family business with the true virtues of a family business, Mr. Joseph Meerpohl (80) still has an office and works from the company's head quarters in Calveslage near Vectha in Northern Germany. His son Bernd runs Big Dutchman with his second son Dirk being involved in the families other activities. Joseph's daughters also play import roles within the day to day activities of this ever growing enterprise.

This family contact which has been seen by many of our Indian customers reinforces the customers trust in a brand which has not looked back since Joseph and now his son Bernd took over the helm.

INDIA - The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) has asked the Union Government to allocate 1 million tonnes of wheat for poultry industry.

The Committee felt that this was necessary to help the poultry farmers to meet the feed requirements, following sharp increase in prices of maize and soya meal the essential feed ingredients.

“The price of maize has gone up to Rs 1,400 from Rs 950-1,000 a quintal last year. The price of soya meal has increased to Rs 3,750 from Rs 1,800 a quintal. The prices of other coarse grains such as jowar and bajra too have gone up significantly,” the Committee said in a press release.

It alleged that forward trading, speculation and hoarding were the reasons for the sharp increase in prices of these feed ingredients. As a result, the break-even level for egg production has gone up to Rs 3 from Rs 2.25 a year ago.

The break-even price level for broiler production has increased to Rs 61 from Rs 53 a year ago. “In the absence of corresponding increase in farm-gate prices to offset the increase in input costs, millions of farmers are making losses,” it said.

It appealed to the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution to intervene and ensure allocation of wheat for the poultry industry.

INDIA - 700,000 birds died when a mob cut off the power supply to a poultry farm in Vizianagaram district, which cut the air conditioning and caused asphyxiation.

A mob barged in to the Radha Sakku Agrio Bio Pharma and switched off the power supply. When the staff tried to start the generator they were attacked and beaten up leading to the massive death of the birds. The company officials have said that it caused a loss of Rs210 million.

The long drawn protest by the local people against the pollution and the stink emitting from the poultry farm in Karlam village under Chirupally mandal of Vizianagaram district took an ugly turnon Wednesday when hundreds of people from surrounding villages staged a sit in protest in Karlam demanding the closure of the unit, claiming that the stink and the pollution was adversely affecting their health.

The poultry farm belongs to the Radha Sakku

Agro Bio Pharma company which also runs

other businesses from the same premises.

The local police and revenue department

officials tried to sort out the issue by talking

to the local leaders and the company officials.

The pro tes tors l ed by the pr imary

agricultural committee S Srinivasulu

demanded to know how the farm had been

villages and what kind of chemicals were

being used in the plant.

A settlement appeared possible as the

Chipurupally police station sub inspector

Adbul Maroof and revenue divisional officer

M Shankar Rao assured the people that a

general village meeting would be called on

July 22 to solve the matter and company

officials would give an explanation. The

company officials also assured that they will

take necessary action to stop the smell coming

from their premises.

But the situation suddenly got out of hand as

another group of villagers attacked the

company and ransacked it, switching off the

power supply. Though the police later used

force to disperse the mob the restoration of

power supply took a very long time. Deputy

general manager of the company Sitrama

Raju was also injured in the attack.

Officials said that the birds were kept in air

conditioned halls as the region is still in the

grip of a heat wave.

Tension has gripped the area and additional

police forces have been deployed in Karlam

and surrounding villages.

The total loss to the company has not yet been

fully estimated.

INDIA - The poultry breeding in India is successful. The advantages are

being able to adapt to the climate fluctuations, accepting average feed

and bouncing back into production after problems of a lower quality

feed, high temperatures and disease challenges to fine a profitable end to

the cycle, according to a research paper by Dr T. Kotaiah from Indbro

Research & Breeding Farms.

The study concludes that poultry breeding for efficiency alone may not

continue.

The investment on poultry housing and infrastructure is going up and

feed ingredients of good quality are getting expensive and may not be

available.

A change in environmental requirements will mean birds could become

exposed to low level of common infections without treatment and the

birds will simply have to cope with this.

The study says that the birds should perform well in low investment

houses, with lower quality feed and withstand some amount of

infections without using high order medicines.

However, the more practical way is to breed the birds under similar

conditions.

The initial data shows that the "Adaptability" can be built up in the flock

as a genetic trait.

The birds breed under suboptimal conditions perform even better, when

better environment is given.

Inputs such as manpower and investments also make it favourable to do

this and the growing markets will accept these birds more favourably.

Breeding Adaptability as a Genetic Trait

GLOBAL - Over the next few weeks you will become more and more aware that the 60w and 40w incandescent light bulbs are disappearing from supermarket shelves and more and more concern is being shown over the issues of the Mercury contained in CFL's being used in the food production chain, it's simply very toxic.

Over the past 5 years Agrilamp, has been working to ensure that you have a product that was developed expressly for use in the Poultry Environment, be it for Layers or Broilers in a barn with queen posts or open span, multi tier or slats and so on. Studying the research performed by countless Poultry Scientist over the past twenty years or more and presently further advancing the research in conjunction with a number of universities around the world, we have achieved our initial goal. To provide a range of Poultry Lighting products that for the first time were built for purpose.

To compliment this, Glo Lighting has used the latest technological software applications to identify the very best installation layouts to deliver an even and controllable intensity of light to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency, bird performance and welfare anywhere in the world today.

Of course there would be a time when some competition would be seen in the market and this would be a healthy thing for any new technology as this shows that the market is growing and that the solutions are being taken seriously.

However buyer beware! Recently Glo Lighting

Lighting for Poultry, Beware the Buyerhas been asked to visit several farms that have had lighting solutions installed using LED's as an alternative to Fluorescent Tubes and CFL's, one even used the basis of a design it had put together for the customer but then they were offered a cheap solution.

The following picture shows the poor results:

An Led Tube simply does not provide and output of light that will work in a standard fluorescent tube housing in a poultry house (it might be OK for an office). They might fit and they will give off a lot of light, but the housing and the lens optics are not designed for this type of light source. Apart from the black and white patches seen here on the floor, the areas that are lit have wavy lines where the lens of the housing separates the rows of LED's in the tube.

Prototypes of LED tubes for poultry use were built some years ago and it found that a simple retrofit solution was not a simple task and at present Glo Lighting does not sell an LED tube for poultry production use. They simply don't work as well. The company just knows you would not be happy with the results.

In another building a cheap domestic LED had been installed which put a bright spot of light on the floor not what the farmer expected when he was told it's just the same as Agrilamp. Glo Lighting installed several Agrilamp next to it and achieved an even distribution of light, just what the doctor ordered.

Please remember that the vast majority of Light bulbs of any kind are tested on the basis that their average use will be 3.5 hours per day.

Agrilamp is tested on a twenty-four hour average usage, because that's what you do with them and Glo Lighting offers a proper guarantee to support that.

While these farmers may have in the short term saved a few pounds they ultimately will have to pay for the labour to pick up the floor eggs. Of course the company will do everything we can to help them to solve the problem quickly.

Agrilamp distributors around the world are supported by the provision of training and software to avoid these problems and use only the highest standards of measurement that are tested independently to ensure the very best solutions for you.

If in doubt email Glo Lighting and they will provide you with free advice so that you can choose wisely. [email protected]

The Poultry Cooperative Research Centre (Poultry CRC) has been

recognised for its collaborative efforts with industry and research

partners in the development of a vaccine against fowl cholera, Vaxsafe®

PM.

The award, for significant innovation in Agriculture and Food, was made

at the Cooperative Research Centres Association (CRCA) Conference on

May 16. As CEO of the CRCA, Professor Tony Peacock, explains "the

Australian Collaborative Innovation awards are an exciting

development, as they

celebrate research that

makes an impact and is

out there actually

transforming the lives

of Australians".

Vaxsafe® PM is a live

attenuated vaccine

p r o v i d i n g b r o a d

protection against different strains of Pasteurella multocida, the

causative agent of fowl cholera. It has been developed over an eight year

period in a collaborative effort between The University of Melbourne,

Bioproperties Pty Ltd and the Poultry CRC.

Poultry CRC CEO, Professor Mingan Choct, said at the time, "the

development of this innovative product is the direct outcome of an

extraordinary collaborative effort. Without the specific expertise each

collaborator was able to provide, this would not have been possible to

achieve".

With conservative estimates of $13M savings annually for the Australian

poultry industry, which accounts for less than 1% of the global poultry

industry, the development of Vaxsafe® PM represents the type of real-

world output that can be achieved under a collaborative model like the

CRC Program. "The poultry industry is a major contributor to Australia's

food basket. Without continued innovation and successful collaboration

in this sector we will fail to meet the challenges of feeding a growing

population", said Professor Choct.

Poultry CRC would like to take this opportunity to thank our

participants and researchers, in particular, Dr Peter Scott, Dr Rima Youil,

Dr David Tinworth and many other staff members from The University

of Melbourne and Bioproperties who made this success possible.

Professor Kevin Whithear of The University of Melbourne was our

program manager to whom we owe our sincere thanks.

INDIA - Andhra Pradesh Poultry Federation

(APPF) joint secretary N. Nageswara Rao has

asked the Ministry for Consumer Affairs and

tonnes of wheat and rice at subsidised rates to

the poultry farmers who were facing hardships

owing to higher feed price which comprises of

maize and soya.

, Mr Rao said that poultry industry was facing a

severe crisis owing to abnormal increase in the

prices of maize and soyameal which were

principal feed ingredients. “The price of maize

which was Rs.840 per quintal two years ago has

gone up to Rs.1,350 per quintal and that of soya

has gone up to Rs.4,300 per quintal from

Rs.1,700 per quintal.

The yield of maize was 19 million tonnes last

year and that of soya 11.50 million tonnes in the

country. This has resulted in the increase in the

BANGLADESH - Thousands of people have been left food insecure after

extensive flooding, landslides and flash floods in eastern Bangladesh at

the end of June. Crops and seed stocks have been badly damaged and it

will be three to four months before farmers are able to replant.

"We need to support the villagers now or we will face serious food

shortages in the region soon,” Matiur Rahman, director of the

Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, (BDRCS) told IRIN. “Until the next

harvest we need to support the communities with cash and seedlings.”

Fazlul Haque, Joint Secretary of the Disaster Management and Relief

Division (DMRD), said the loss of rice paddies and livestock in the floods

had badly shaken the livelihoods of millions who depend on agriculture.

The government estimates that more than 1,000 hectares of seasonal

crops were destroyed in eastern Bangladesh, while scores of poultry

farms and fish hatcheries were swept away.

“The Ministry of Agriculture is closely monitoring the situation in order

to allocate aid to the farmers,” Haque said. “But rescue operations are

now over and we are concentrating on relief aid, providing tarpaulins,

plastic sheeting, medicine, dry food and water purification tablets to

affected districts.”

An estimated five million people were affected by days of exceptionally

heavy rain, and the government says some 58,000 were displaced, but

humanitarian partners on the ground say the real number was

significantly higher.

At least 131 people in four districts lost their lives when houses collapsed

and roads were flooded, the DMRD reported. Among the eight districts

impacted, Sylhet District in the northeast, and Chittagong, Cox's Bazar,

and Bandarban districts in the southeast were the worst affected.

At the beginning of July, the World Food Programme (WFP) in

Bangladesh conducted a rapid needs assessment in the three most

affected districts in the southeast, where more than 100,000 people lost

their homes and are in need of immediate assistance.

Most of the displaced had returned to their homes by 11 July, WFP

reported. “There will of course be an impact on food security because

seedbeds have been affected, but it is difficult to quantify this currently,”

said Michael Dunford, WFP deputy country director. “The next harvest

season is not until October. WFP and others will continue to monitor the

situation.”

Floods Destroy Poultry Farms and Leave Thousands Food Insecure

of broilers to Rs.90 per kg,” he pointed out.

Mr Rao said that the Government should

channelize soyameal exports to Iran through

Government agencies and also ban forward

trading in the commodity. “The requirement of

the domestic consumption should be

considered before allowing further exports,” he

added.

He said that the AP produced seven crore eggs

per day, which is one third of country's egg

production and three crore broilers per month

accounting for one tenth of the country's broiler

production. “The poultry industry is providing

employment to more than six lakh people

mostly in rural areas,” he added.

At the national-level the poultry industry

contributed Rs.60,000 billion to the GNP and

provided employment to over six million

people. Mr Rao said. “In addition, two lakh

maize and four lakh soyabean farmers are

directly dependent on this sector because 80 per

cent of the maize and a substantial share of

soyameal produced in the country are utilised

by the poultry industry,”

Koebrugge Farm Celebrates 25 Years as Ross PS ProducersNETHERLANDS - Aviagen EPI has surprised Ross customers Henny

and Marianne Koebrugge-Mulder of Koebrugge Farm with a celebration

of 25 years in business together. Based in a small village called Ambt

Delden in the eastern part of the Netherlands Koebrugge was one of the

first Ross broiler breeder farms in the Netherlands.

Over the past 25 years, Koebrugge bought more than 500.000 Ross broiler

breeders. During these years the capacity of the farm has been increased

from 5.000 females placed to the current 20.000 females placed.

The first flock of 12.000 Ross 208 birds

was placed on May 31st 1987. Henny

and Marianne were initially placing

three flocks of 5000 females/ year.

The rearing was done in one house

and the egg production in two other

houses at the same farm, and every

16-17 weeks a new flock was placed.

During the period 1996 to 2000 Ross

508 was their breed of choice and

from 2000 until now it has been Ross 308.

To the question why they changed to Ross in the first place, Henny said:

“you always have to take into account, what the demand is of the market.

That time in 1987 broiler results became more important and the

hatcheries were asking for these type of birds. Presently in 2012 we

experience still similar demands for the same breed.”

Maurice Sander, Aviagen EPI, said: “We're delighted to have given

Marianne and Henny this surprise. They have worked very hard over the

years and should be proud of their achievements. We just wanted to

show how much we appreciate the work they have done.

“Koebrugge does produce under a high hygiene standard and their

results are always found in the top quartile or very close to this

demonstrating the value in their hard work to produce quality birds.

”We as Aviagen-EPI would like to thank Henny and Marianne

Koebrugge for their trust in our products and the positive support in

several aspects during the past years. We hope to be in business together

for another 25 years.”

Farm Koebrugge is not only a hatching egg production farm but also acts as

an instruction farm for students and trainees of other companies. Marianne

has always been involved with and has been president in many local and

regional agricultural and poultry organisations and with her wide

knowledge she can lead and support many discussions on a wide range of

subjects.

Marianne and Henny have extended their hospitality to visitors from all

parts of the world. As early as 1987, Ross Breeders came with visitors from

the Middle East. They were always prepared to train future broiler breeder

farmers and many of them, recently mainly German farmers, got practical

training at Koebrugge farm.

A passenger attempting to smuggle thirty-eight birds into Taiwan was intercepted at Taoyuan International airport. The birds were tested and found positive for HPAI H5N1, the World Organisation for Animal Health reports.

The passenger was en route to Taiwan, travelling from Macau. The birds were euthanised immediately, and sent to Taiwan's National Lab at the Animal Health Research Institute for testing.

The smuggled birds tested positive for H5N1 HPAI virus and HAO cleavage sequencing showed high pathogenicity. All staff that had had contact with the birds are being monitored by the Health Authority.

Under the OIE Terrestrial Code, this event does not affect the current H5N1 HPAI-free status of Taiwan, and the issue is declared resolved.

US - The common barnyard chicken could provide some very un-common

clues for fighting off diseases and might even offer new ways to attack

cancer, according to a team of international researchers that includes a

Texas A&M University professor.

James Womack, Distinguished Professor of Veterinary Pathobiology in the

College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, is co-author of a

paper detailing the team's work that appears in the current issue of PNAS

(Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences). Womack was a leader

in the international effort to sequence the cattle genome in 2004.

Mr Womack and the team, comprised mostly of scientists from the Seoul

National University in Korea, examined 62 White Leghorn and 53 Cornish

chickens for diversity in NK-lysin, an antibacterial substance that occurs

naturally in animals and is used as a method of fighting off diseases.

They were able to obtain two genetic variations of NK-lysin and the results

offered two unexpected shockers: both showed abilities to fight off

bacterial infections and other diseases, while one showed it could

successfully fight cancer cells as well.

"It took all of us by surprise," Mr Womack says of the findings.

"One of the genetic variations shows it has the ability to fight against cancer

cells much more aggressively than the other variation. We certainly were

not looking at the cancer side of this, but there it was."

Mr Womack says the team selected the two breeds because Cornish and

White Leghorn chickens, found throughout most of the world, have

relatively diverse genetic origins.

After conducting a DNA sequence of the chickens, the team found two

variations of the genes that offered clues as to their protective ability to

ward off infections.

"One form appears to be more potent in killing off cancer cells than the

other, and that's the one that naturally caught our eye," Mr Womack adds.

"This could lead to other steps to fight cancer or in developing ways to

prevent certain infections or even diseases. It's another door that has been

opened up. We are looking at similar studies right now to see if this is

possible with cattle.

"The next step is to work with other animals and see if similar variants exist.

We need to look for any genetic similarities to the chicken variants and then

determine if these variants affect the health of the animal, but this is an

exciting first step in this direction.”

Chickens May be Extraordinary in Fighting Cancer, says Researcher

The National Chicken Council and USA Poultry & Egg Export

Council (USPEEC) have urged the trade representative "to match

Brazil's commitment to its industry by filing a World Trade

Organization (WTO) challenge on behalf of US chicken exporters”

against the anti-dumping duties South Africa imposed on US chicken

“We urge the US government to support Brazil as a third-party in its

case if Brazil will agree to reciprocate and support the United States

in its case,” the organisations said.

Brazil filed a challenge with the WTO against the anti-dumping

duties South Africa imposed on Brazilian chicken. South Africa

imposed anti-dumping duties on US poultry imports over two

decades ago using the “same flawed theory” that it recently used

against Brazilian imports, the letter explained.

Using a weighted average export price for US bone-in chicken cuts

from 2000 through to the first quarter of 2012, the organisations said

that the effective average duty levied by South Africa on the products

is 258.8 per cent.

The US estimates that the industry could increase ite exports by

127,000 tonnes a year if the market was open.

In Europe, the European Parliament has voted for animal welfare

rules to be better enforced, existing loopholes closed and offenders

punished.

The MEPs said the action has to be taken because it will also protect

human health, by preventing the spread of animal-related diseases

and antimicrobial resistance.

The new action follows condemnation of the lax implementation of

regulations from the Swedish MEP Marit Paulsen.

A new study from the European Food Safety Authority has reported

that as far as food safety is concerned, there are no indications that

differences exist between food products derived from healthy clones

or their offspring in particular milk and meat - from those of healthy,

conventionally bred animals.

However, in its scientific statement, EFSA said that it recognises that

animal health and welfare concerns continue to be associated with

this technology.

EFSA's latest statement on animal cloning, which has been produced

on the request of the European Commission, agrees that no new

scientific information has become available since its previous 2010

statement that would require reconsideration of the Authority's

earlier conclusions and recommendations.

The French government is considering taking further action over

California's ban on the sale foie gras.

The French Department of Agriculture has called in the United States

Ambassador for meeting to make him aware of the situation that has

arisen following the law that came into force on 1 July in California to

prohibit the sale of foie gras on animal welfare grounds.

French industry experts have called on the government to intervene,

because they claim the action is contrary to the rules of the World

Trade Organization (WTO).

"The Government will consider without waiting for the legal aspects

of this decision what action to take," said the Ministry of Agriculture

in a statement.

ANALYSIS - US poultry groups have called on the trade representative Ron Kirk to take South Africa to the World Trade Organization over the anti-dumping duties imposed on US poultry products,

INDIA - Shell egg trade has pruned farm-gate prices of its produce in

anticipation of the approaching Tamil austere month of Aadi (starting

July 15) in Tamil Nadu and the onset of Shravan in the North and in

neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka when the consumption of

poultry products will touch the nadir.

To save the chicken farms and the trade from possible accumulation of

stocks, the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), Namakkal

Zone, has chosen to bring down the wholesale price of live birds to Rs 38 a

kg from Rs 44 last week.

In the case of shell eggs, the apex body has trimmed the wholesale rate by

35 paise to Rs 2.85 a piece. Though sources in the egg trade said the price

cut was to encourage consumption of poultry products in the wake of

austere period, an NECC spokesperson attributed the price cut to buyers

resistance.

The commodity hit a record Rs 3.33 on 28 June with a rise in demand

following the onset of south west monsoon. From 26 May to 28 June, the

wholesale price of egg has been increased 15 times from Rs 2.75 to Rs 3.33

(an overall increase by more than 19 per cent).

The Chairman of NECC, Dr P Selvaraj said that prices may go down

further by 10-15 paise an egg and may start looking up only after

Navaratri.
