My aim is to support every Club and to work with every single LION in the District. I can tell you that Ann is also excited about the year ahead and I am a lucky man to have her beside me adding help and support. Let's be honest from the start. We do face challenges as an organisation, in terms of ageing membership, adapting to a rapidly changing society and also in publicising LIONS. However, I sense from meeting members right around the District that there is a real determination to take on these challenges and to take LIONS forward. I also know, from working with my new District Governor colleagues, that there is a similar resolve to take these challenges on Nationally. My theme as District Governor is and the District Plan reflecting this theme is outlined on page 3 of this newsletter... please have a look at it. A big to the many Clubs and individual LIONS across the District who have contributed to the District Plan, it’s very much a team effort. Here I'll just outline the top objectives for us all to work on... Having met many incoming Presidents I know there is a group of committed LIONS determined to make a difference, the Zone Chairs have great experience and knowledge, the District Cabinet Team Leaders and their teams have plans that reflect and the DG Team members (Stephen, Balvinder and I) are charged up and ready for the year. As District Governor I'm determined to be in touch with as many LIONS members in the District as possible. So, please consider joining Facebook and once you’ve signed up send me a friend invite and also link up to the District 105E Facebook Page, there will be regular updates posted on it. In the next year, to spread the message of Zone Chairs will be coming to Clubs, the DG Team will be carrying out Club visits and District Officers will be covering key messages at your meetings. As District Governor I'm aiming to visit every Club in the District either at a Charter celebration, on an official Club visit, by fronting a Lions promotional event or by helping out at a social event. My intention is to recognise LIONS who have achieved great service or who are contributing to the future. I was 13 or 14 when my mum started to drag a leg on a family holiday. Within afew weeks she was in hospital having a lumbar puncture. This triggered a migrainewhich lasted a month. I was scared and alone. My big brother was away atuniversity, my dad wasn’t saying much and I was too afraid to ask... My mum wasdiagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. It has no cure and is very debilitating.Over the years I watched my mum get worse. When she passed away aged 79the only place she felt slight relief was lying on her bed. In pain from the top ofher skull to the base of her spine, she couldn’t cope with the pain of sitting in herwheelchair.MS is a condition of the central nervous system. The coatings on the nerve fibres – the message system forthe body - are damaged. Messages to the brain get delayed, disjointed or don’t get through at all. This iswhy The MS Society is my chosen charity for 2015/2016.All donations will be distributed within the geographical area of Lions District 105E. I also hope to be able toput Lions Clubs in touch with the local MS Branches. As a service organisation I’m sure there will be projectswe can work on to help the society to help those with MS.I’m certain that Lions across our District will want to support this caring and deserving organisation. I lookforward to talking to many of you about my appeal and about The MS Society in the months ahead... In themeantime THANK YOU all for considering how you will be able to help me.

3 LIONS + One BEM...No wonder this trio (WintertonLion President Don Johnson, hiswife Lion Lin and their symbolic, totallyhouse trained, pet Lion) are all sodelighted. News has just arrived thatDon has been recognised in theQueen’s Birthday Honours list and is tobe awarded a British Empire Medal.Lion Don (73) said... ‘Lin and myself areover the moon and overwhelmed bythe many messages of congratulationwe’ve received... it’s a great personalhonour that also put’s the organisationswith which I am involved on the map’.The citation to be engraved on Don’smedal will read... . Fitting indeed asLion Don has served enthusiastically not just as a Lion but also by working tirelessly for over 50 yearsfor the benefit of all in his home town community.A teacher at Winterton since 1965 Don continued his teaching link after retirement as a supply teacherand a school governor. He volunteered to assist in , a learning centre at ScunthorpeUnited Football Club which helps local children improve standards and attitudes to learning. Don hasactively campaigned for a Playing Field and a Community Pavilion chairing the committee whichsecured £750K of funding.A charter member of Glanford and Lindsey Lions Don helped found the Winterton and District Cluband served as it’s Charter President and also as President in 2014/15. He’s raised thousands of poundsfor local causes over the last 47 years through numerous activities. As leader of a local Youth Clubhe ran Canoe Marathons on the River Ancholme. He’s served as a member of the Winterton AgriculturalSociety for 50 years and has recently finished his second stint as chairman... And if all that’s not enoughhe recently started his 50th year as a member of the Town Council and has been Town Mayor on fiveoccasions... Now that must be a record?

105E has an ongoing Strategic Plan which sets out a clear direction for the District. Each year the incoming DG considers elements of that plan to be prioritised and so a yearly District Plan is set around this.In the 21st Century, Social, Cultural and Technological changes are all tooevident. As Lions we must respond and it’s crucial to involve everyone. So,in formulating a plan for the coming year all members and Clubs within 105Ehave had a opportunity to contribute. Many of the ideas and views put forwardare reflected in this plan, so encompassing our theme... .Outlined here are some key elements.

£5k Swimmer boosts Lions’ funds

To demonstrate appreciation for support he has received fromlocal organisations Derek Cartwright (53) decided he wouldundertake a sponsored swim. His splendid efforts raised astaggering £5,000 half of which he is donating to the ScunthorpeGateway Club and half to Scunthorpe Lions.Virtually single handedly Derek set about collecting pledges fromhundreds of sponsors commenting - ‘I’m doing this for the GatewayClub but also for the Lions who are so good at helping so manypeople in the town. They have helped me and now I want to dosomething in return’. Each year Scunthorpe Lions entertainaround 300 disabled and underprivileged children and adults bytreating them to a night out at the Pantomime. Derek is one ofthose who have benefited and he’s asked the Lions to arrange forhim to meet the panto cast this year... ..

Pictures: Above - Lion President Derek Hall congratulatesa tired but happy Derek Cartwright after a gruelling swim.Right - Before his swim Derek gets support from Lions JimHarding, Mike Kitchen, President Derek Hall, Bob Hall,Phil Johns and Dave Briggs

Lion President Derek Hall commented, ‘A lotof people have been very generous and that’sappreciated immensely but Derek’s effort isfantastic. We are proud to be associated withhim and delighted he has thought about theLions in this way’.

I want to remind you that District Convention2016 will be held on the 11th/12th March atBelvoir Castle (by the kind invitation of theDuke and Duchess of Rutland). This will be anamazing experience for all in 105E.It will, of course, come at a cost but DistrictCabinet and the Vale of Belvoir Club believe this an opportunity not to be missed and, to help youplan for the event, it’s been suggested that an account is opened by the District Treasurer allowingmembers to set up a standing order payment towards the cost. By spreading the cost the additionalexpense may become less of a problem for many Lions. It is suggested that Lions making use of thisfacility should do so over a period of six months starting in August. Prices are still being discussed butwill be circulated soon, as will more information about Standing Order arrangements for those interested.

Impressive - Belvoir Castle

STATELY HOME CONVENTION... an event NOT TO BE MISSED

In the June edition of Update E we asked for captions for the pictureseen here which was captured during the Host Night at this year’sMD Convention. Thanks to those who submitted suggestions... the winning caption, submitted by Lion President Kevin Senior of Matlock Derwent ValleyLions... It reads:

Well Done! You are now charged with givingthe Editor a constant reminder that a prize is to be supplied.

Retford’s location makes it an ideal venuefor a District activity of this type. For thisreason it’s been extremely successful inattracting young families who are supportingthe children taking part and that, in turn, provides a chance to tell them about ourorganisation. During this year’s tournamentRetford Lion President Martin Allan probablymanaged to speak individually to everyperson present. He was really selling raffletickets but managed to enlighten manyabout what our organisation does. Hopefullynew supporters of Lions will emerge tosupport and help with our activities, and even(who knows?) new members may result. But, thinking of the real purpose of the dayit was very pleasing to see our Nationalgame played and enjoyed by so many withcountless remarks about the good conductof players on and off the field.

An opportunity for much more than football...

Excellent planning by Lion Mark Thursby ensured each team was able to play several matches. Asteams are eliminated a secondary competition (The Plate) emerges to keep all teams involved. The entertainment level was high too with plenty of action from some really good players. Extra time, penalties and even sudden death penalties all added to the excitement. Louth Lions Club won thePlate competition but the ultimate winners of the cup were Loughborough Dynamos (sponsored byLoughborough Lions). At the close of the day, as the shouting was starting to subside the organisers were gratified by the

given by new team (who had travelled some distance to take part). They commented...Now that makes all the effort worthwhile!

YOUR CLUB COULD GET INVOLVED IN THE EXCITEMENT AND SATISFACTION OF THE 2016 TOURNAMENTMake a note of the date Sunday June 5th 2016 - please come and join in the fun

A board will be erected acknowledging the part played by North Sea Lions and the Lions clubsresponsible for nominating and managing the project. The school has benefited greatly from links set up between Retford Lions and Mombasa Mvita Lions. The local club has provided, and continues to provide, invaluable practical advice in terms of legalrequirements and accounting/tax requirements. They have ensured that the charity has trustworthyrepresentatives to ensure all requirements are fulfilled.

I’ve recently returned from Kenya where I was ableto visit the school and monitor progress on severaloccasions. On one of those occasions I was part ofa site meeting with the architect, the chairman ofthe building company (Fairtrade), the Trustees, therepresentatives of Mombasa Mvita Lions Club andthe school administrator. The project is progressing well. All rooms are nowplastered and ready for installation of electricalfittings. The balustrade on external passagewayshas been completed and door frames fitted. Theclassroom floors have now been tiled. Plans are inhand for the final roof treatment to ensure that therecan be no water ingress. The standard of workmanship is good and localLions and the architect are monitoring everythingclosely. The builders and architect are confident ofcompletion by early July when an official openingceremony is planned.

Lion Tahere Biondi, my main contact, arranged a visit tothe Mombasa Aga Khan Academy for myself andGeorgina Frost (Trustee) to meet Mr Gulam Juma whois a Director of Aga Khan Academies across the world. This organisation signed a Memorandum ofUnderstanding with Lions at Seattle. This visit was very interesting as one of the facilities atthe Academy is a department for professionaldevelopment of teachers which trains not only their ownteachers but has an outreach programme. There wasdiscussion about the CHinK Academy becoming part ofthis programme which will ensure that the staff at theschool are kept up to date with educationaldevelopments. Trainers from the programme also visitthe schools to ensure that the teachers are using thetraining to good effect. The AKA is keen to involve Chink in its programme andLion Tahere Biondi will be following this up on the groundand keeping me informed of the progress. It is also hopedthat eventually some pupils may be able to progress toAKA to continue their education – 100% scholarships areoffered to those who are of a high academic standardand unable to afford fees.

In the lead up to 2017 and the Lions Clubs InternationalCentenary we’re intending to run a series of nostalgiaarticles about the past achievements and notableadvances of our organisation during 100 years of service.Hopefully readers will provide interestingcontributions outlining some landmarks their own Clubshave celebrated... but for now there’s perhaps no betterplace to start than with some words about our founder...

Nearly 100 years ago, Melvin Jones' vision became a reality when delegates of the first Lions club metto inaugurate what would become an international movement to improve the lives of vulnerable peoplearound the world. His devotion to service embodied the values that have grown Lions Clubs Internationalinto the world's largest service organisation. His vision carried Lions Clubs International into the 21stCentury and his legacy will propel it into the next. Here's how it all began.Melvin Jones was born on January 13, 1879 in Fort Thomas, Arizona, the son of a United States Armycaptain who commanded a troop of scouts. Later, his father was transferred and the family movedeast. As a young man, Melvin Jones made his home in Chicago, Illinois. He became associated withan insurance firm and in 1913 formed his own agency. He soon joined the Business Circle, abusinessmen's luncheon group, and was shortly elected secretary. This group was one of many at thattime devoted solely to promoting the financial interests of their membership. Because of their limitedappeal, they were destined to disappear.Melvin Jones, then a 38-year-old Chicago business leader, had other plans... he thought -

At his invitation, delegates from men's clubs met in Chicago to laythe groundwork for such an organisation and on June 7, 1917, Lions Clubs International was born.Melvin Jones eventually abandoned his insurance agency to devote himself full time to Lions atInternational Headquarters in Chicago. It was under his dynamic leadership that Lions Clubs earnedthe prestige necessary to attract civic-minded members. The association's founder was also recognisedas a leader by those outside the association. One of his greatest honors was in 1945 when herepresented Lions Clubs International as a consultant in San Francisco, California, at the organisationof the United Nations.Melvin Jones, whose personal code

became a guiding principle for public-spirited people the world over. He died, age 82, 1 June 1961.

Scunthorpe Lions have for many years joinedforces with other neighbouring Clubs (Brigg,Glanford and Lindsey,Winterton) to maintain aconstant supply ’ to ScunthorpeHospital’s Children’s Ward and A&E Unit. These comforting Lions toys (pictured above)are given to children who are either admitted inan emergency or undergoing procedures whichare uncomfortable and cause distress.Feedback is perhaps irregular but if there wasany doubt about the value of providing thisservice then the letter (right) should serve as atimely reminder that the Lions’ caring actionsare appreciated...For all four of the Clubs involved this is asuccess story to be proud of.

Dear all at Scunthorpe Lions Club,You do not know me but I have heard about yourclub and experienced first hand the kindnessfrom one of your community schemes.Earlier this week my 4 year old daughter becamevery ill and we ended up staying at the DisneyWard at Scunthorpe General Hospitals for a fewdays. During this stay she had to undergo a fewtests which to her were very scary and painful. On arrival she was kindly given one of yourbravery lions which she immediately soughtcomfort from. Her comfort in difficult times hasalways been her teddy but obviously as she wasadmitted in an emergency this wasn't somethingwe had with us at the time. Having somethingfamiliar in an unfamiliar environment alleviatedsome of her stress and worry.Throughout her stay she treasured this lion andit helped distract her. This small gesture fromyour club did not go unnoticed and now she isback at home; I just wanted to take the time tocontact you so each and every one of you realisethe difference you made for my daughter andalso us during her stay.

Lions AREappreciated
