Test Your Bullying KnowledgeHow much do you really know? Check out these facts and myths about bullying.FACT: People who bully have power over those they bully. People who bully others usually pick on those who have less social power (peer status), psychological power (know how to harm others), or physical power (size, strength). However, some people who bully also have been bullied by others. People who both bully and

are bullied by others are at the highest risk for problems (such as depression

and anxiety) and are more likely to become involved in risky or

delinquent behavior. FACT: Spreading rumors is a form of bullying.

Spreading rumors, name-calling, excluding others, and embarrassing them are all forms of social bullying that can cause serious and lasting harm. MYTH: Bullying usually occurs when there are no other students around. Students see about four out of every fi ve bullying incidents at school. In fact, when they witness bullying, they give the student who is bullying positive attention or even join in about three-quarters of the time. Although 9 out of 10 students say there is bullying in their schools, adults rarely see bullying, even if they are looking for it. MYTH: Bullying often resolves itself when you ignore it. Bullying refl ects an imbalance of power that happens again and again. Ignoring the bullying teaches students who bully that they can bully others without consequences. Adults and other students need to stand up for children who are bullied, and to ensure they are protected and safe. MYTH: All children will outgrow bullying. For some, bullying continues as they become older. Unless someone intervenes, the bullying will likely continue and, in some cases, grow into violence and other serious problems. Children who consistently bully others often continue their aggressive behavior through adolescence and into adulthood. MYTH: Reporting bullying will make the situation worse. Research shows that children who report bullying to an adult are less likely to experience bullying in the future. Adults should encourage children to help keep their school safe and to tell an adult when they see bullying.MYTH: Teachers often intervene to stop bullying.Adults often do not witness bullying despite their good intentions. Teachers intervene in only 14 percent of classroom bullying episodes and in 4 percent of bullying incidents that happen outside the classroom. MYTH: Nothing can be done at schools to reduce bullying.School initiatives to prevent and stop bullying have reduced bullying by 15 to 50 percent. The most successful initiatives involve the entire school community of teachers, staff, parents, students, and community members.MYTH: Parents are usually aware that their children are bullying others. Parents play a critical role in bullying prevention, but they often do not know if their children bully or are bullied by others. To help prevent bullying, parents need to talk with their children about what is happening at school and in the community.

Don’t Be a Bully, Be a Buddy!

Greetings Everyone!! Terri here, with Kids Korner

Family Magazine. Well the kids have been out of school for a month

already. And SUMMER is offi cially here! I think summer time is a great time

to help your children build self- esteem. I love the way Missourifamilies.org explains

kids self-esteem. “ Children’s self-esteem may be thought of as a collection of pictures

they carry with them that refl ects how they feel about themselves.” “ Children begin

developing this collection early in life, parents and adults have a great infl uence on how they come to view themselves. Children who grow up with a healthy self-esteem have parents who believe in them and give them opportunities to succeed. These children know that the adults in their lives love and accept them. Children who grow up with a healthy self-esteem welcome new opportunities and learn to take risks as they grow older.” So take some time this summer and do things together with your children and give specifi c praise to them, like, “ Thank you so much for getting the blankets together and packing them for our picnic.” It’s nice to let the kids help (even if you can do it faster!!) Give little task for your kids of all ages to do, so they are apart of the process and help grow their self confi dence. There are many kids left alone during the summer so if you know of any ask their parents if you can invite them along with your family outings and show them the same praise as you give your own kids. You never know YOU may be the only one giving KIND COMMENTS AND PRAISE!!

Thank You, Thank You, for supporting our family magazine. I want you to know

that by your support you are investing in our community by allowing us the

fi nancial means to spread the word about Promoting “Kindness to Prevent Bullies”.

If you have a story, suggestion, or ideal you would like to share please

send them to me.

Summer Car Safety Provided by Corey Sly.To make sure your child is safe in your

vehicle this summer:Never leave a child unattended in a motor vehicle, even with the window slightly open. On a sunny day, the temperatures inside a vehicle can reach poten-tially deadly levels in minutes.

Lock car doors and trunks – even at home – and keep keys out of children’s reach.

Watch kids closely, particularly when loading and unloading.

Make sure all children leave the vehicle when you reach your destination.

Leave the diaper bag by your purse or briefcase on the front seat, or your purse in the backseat with your child

Small children and animals are not able to open a window or open a door like you can. Typically, they will be quiet as heat overcomes them, so there won’t be crying or other audible indications of trouble. Cracking the windows does not help; it doesn’t pre-vent the temperature in the car from rising. Leaving children and pets inside a closed car, or even one with the windows rolled down, is dangerous, deadly, and illegal. Report children or pets in hot cars to the police immediately by calling 911.

Bingham Dance Center had been in Midland for 50 years when I, Jill Clements, purchased the studio. Continuing down the path laid for me; fi rst by Mr Bingham

and next by Ms Joy Swift, I have worked the last 10 years maintaining that Bingham has been the dance studio of choice. Celebrating our 10 year anniversary my husband Darin and I believe so highly in the wonderful curriculum offered at Bingham that we decided to build. With this move to our new location and the addition of Tumbling, Cheer, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Theatre & Music, Fitness and Modeling we will now be known as Bingham Center. Bingham Center will continually strive to offer: the Best Curriculums, an Incredible Staff, and to be the place where Fun & Excellence Unite! Please, drop by and visit us soon. Don’t be bored this summer. Come and spend your day with us. Sincerely, Jill Clements

Funny Parenting Tips* Human beings are the only creatures on earth that allow their children to come back home. * One thing they never tell you about child raising is that for the rest of your life, at the drop of a hat, you are expected to know your child’s name and how old he or she is. * When my kids become wild and unruly, I use a nice, safe playpen. When they’re fi nished, I climb out. * Most children threaten at times to run away from home. This is the only thing that keeps some parents going.

SELF ESTEEM - 15 ways to help children like themselves 1. Reward children. Give praise, recognition, a special privilege or increased responsibility for a job well done. Emphasize the good things they do, not the bad. 2. Take their ideas, emotions and feelings seriously. Don’t belittle them by saying “You’ll grow out of it” or “It’s not as bad as you think.” 3. Defi ne limits and rules clearly, and enforce them. But do allow leeway for your children within these limits. 4. Be a good role model. Let your children know that you feel good about yourself. Also let them see too that you can make mistakes and learn from them. 5. Teach your children how to deal with time and money. Help them spend time wisely and budget their money carefully. 6. Have reasonable expectations for your children. Help them to set reachable goals so they can achieve success. 7. Help your children develop tolerance toward those with different values, backgrounds and norms. Point out other people’s strengths. 8. Give your children responsibility. They will feel useful, and valued. 9. Be available. Give support when children need it. 10. Show them that what they do is important to you. Talk with them about their activities and

interests. Go to their games, parent’s day at school, drama presentations, awards ceremonies. 11. Express your values, but go beyond “do this” or “I want you to do that.” Describe the experiences that determined your values, the decisions you made to accept certain beliefs, the reasons behind your feelings. 12. Spend time together. Share favorite activities. 13. Discuss problems without placing blame or commenting on a child’s character. If children know that there is a problem but don’t feel attacked, they are more likely to help look for a solution. 14. Use phrases that build self esteem, such as “Thank you for helping” or “That was an excellent idea!” Avoid phrases that hurt self esteem “Why are you so stupid?”;”How many times have I told you?” 15. Show how much you care about them. Hug them. Tell them they are terrifi c and that you love them.
