1THE TEAM AT RUA RED

WELCOME

Hi all,

Hard to believe we are at July already! We’ve had an unbelievably great year so far and that looks set to continue for the rest of 2014. With festivals like Glitch and the Red Line Book Festival, events as part of Culture Night and Tiger Dublin Fringe and an amazing array of workshops and one-off happenings (to name but a few) the rest of this year is looking like it might be our best few months yet.

Thank you to all who have made our 5th year so special - it is the community that has sprung up in and around RUA RED that keeps it going. Without your support we wouldn’t be the community we are today. And to all our new visitors - welcome, make yourselves at home!

Glitch at RUA RED is an annual festival that brings together leading media and technology artists, curators, researchers, and artist groups with audiences to explore emerging and established contemporary cultural and critical issues that arise from artist’s intersection and investigations with digital technology.

This year’s exhibition - Cash Rules Everything Around - focuses on how artists are using new media to investigate social and political systems. Taking on subjects such as privacy, love, art production and aesthetics the exhibition shows how criticism, humor and innovation are used to analyse and partly re-configure these issues; such as outsourcing the production of painted canvases of found images online to China or imagery that examines and questions accepted norms of the public perception of beauty.

Glitch features the work of Addie Wagenknecht (US), Breda Lynch (IE) and Fergal Brennan (IE).

Glitch is curated by Nora O Murchú.

Addie Wagenknecht is an American artist based in Austria, whose work questions the relationship between technology, feminism, and social interaction.

She is a member of the Free Art & Technology Lab and chairs the Open Hardware Summit at MIT. Her work has been exhibited internationally at Museums Quartier Vienna, The Istanbul Biennial, Museum of Modern Art and MU Eindhoven, featuring in a number of academic papers, books, and magazines. She holds a Masters degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University, and has previously held fellowships at Eyebeam Art + Technology Center, Culture Lab, Hyperwerk Institute for Post-Industrial Design, and The Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University.

Fergal Brennan works in time-based visual media. He incorporates traditional hand-drawn or stop-motion animation with the precision of modern digital film technology and programming. His main focus is the exploration of film and animation as a graphic language and communication tool, with all of the political, social and aesthetic implications that arise from it.

Breda Lynch is a visual artist living and working in Limerick, Ireland. She received her BA Hons degree at the Crawford College of Art, Cork, MA from Chelsea College of Art, London and an MPhil from the University of Wolverhampton, England. She has mounted solo shows in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

OPW YOUNGCURATORS

Unfold is the inaugural exhibition of the Young Curators project initiated by RUA RED. The exhibition is the culmination of many connections, individual, collective and artistic. The project saw various bodies and individuals connect under the common goal of curation.

Rather than follow a prescribed theme, Unfold is a selection of artworks by the students according to their own tastes and interconnected logics, they themselves provide the link between individual pieces. Therefore the exhibition can be seen as idiosyncratic to the nine individuals involved in discussing and debating the value of specific art works by leading contemporary artists. The title itself sums up the experience of engaging with the vast collections of art of the OPW and DFPNI. The process has unfolded through dialogue, debate and collaboration. Links were made between pieces based on material or content and the selection of works can be read as a reflection of human relationships. To unfold something is to open it out, to reveal, to disclose. The act

of curation has been unfolded, the experience of creating an exhibition has been revealed and the journey along the way disclosed. There is transparency at every step of the way and it is through this transparency that the audience is brought closer to the process of selecting the exhibition.

With thanks to: Minister Brian Hayes, the Office of Public Works, the Department of Finance and Personnel; Northern Ireland, The Institute of Technology Tallaght and, of course, the nine curators together under the common goal of curation.

VICTORIA J DEAN

Between 2010 and 2012, photographic artist Victoria J. Dean documented the length of the Irish coastline, surveying the architecture of recreational space and its impact on the coastal landscape. The Fortified Coastline portrays these familiar environments encouraging a reconsideration of such spaces.

By observing the tension between nature and the encroachment of human development on the landscape, the series of photographs represents how our use of these spaces may be controlled somewhat by the physical nature of the structures within the spaces, thus distancing us further from the greater context of the natural environment.

The Curator Paul McAree has been working with the artist specifically for the exhibition at RUA RED. The Fortified Coastline was

COLIN GRAHAM TALK ON 30 YEARS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

This talk examines how Victoria J. Dean’s work comes out of the photographic context of Northern Ireland, while also drawing on global trends in using photography to think about the relationship between the individual and their environment. Colin Graham shows how Dean’s images of fortifications and uncompromising urban geography open out to reveal the hidden psychologies of what we build and how we think.

Colin Graham teaches at NUI Maynooth and is author of Northern Ireland: 30 Years of Photography.

The exhibition brings together two works by Swedish artist Jacob Dahlgren, which have been reconfigured for RUA RED.

Heaven is a Place on Earth is a large floor work comprising 195 polished bathroom scales in candy-pop colours, ranging from turquoise and lime to cerise and black. The Wonderful World of Abstraction takes its sculptural form from 1000’s of metres of multi-coloured ribbon, which are suspended uniformly from a metal frame – to kaleidoscopic effect.

Visitors are invited by Dahlgren to step into his pictorial and sculptural world by walking across and through his artworks.

He says, “It’s very important to be part of the work, to walk on it and to make that decision to. At first you don’t know if this is ok, if you are allowed to or not. Then once you see that you can, have permission to, it’s a magical moment.”

the paintings become less evocative of a fictitious world and more so evidence of a thought process. They are a space where something is worked out but not necessarily resolved, as such, the structures depicted appear to be in some slow process of transformation as if they have yet to come to a conclusion.

Joe graduated from NCAD in 2013 with a first class honours BA in Fine Art Painting and is the recipient of the 2013 RDS Taylor Art Award. He recently had his first solo show Waiting to Materialise at the Talbot Gallery. Recent group shows include ELEfANTS the Joinery 2014, Precognition Talbot Gallery 2014, Process Block T, 2013, Origins, Lismore Castle Arts 2013.

Although not entirely figurative or abstract Joe Scullion’s paintings appear to be scenes from another world. Marks of paint form into fragments of architecture, lingering in deep atmospheres as if somehow suspended. Reference is made to the depiction of architecture in the history of painting and the photography of modernist architecture, however no recognizable structures appear. The formations are almost monument-like except that they are incomplete; with no clear function they remain ambiguous.

The paintings are built up in thin layers of muted colour. Great care is taken in painting the rigid structures, but eventually this gives way to a more fluid application. Control and looseness vie against each other so that

DENNIS MCNULTY Visual artist-in-residence 2014 -2015

Can you tell us a bit about what you are working on as part of your residency at RUA RED?

I tend to work on a few projects at the same time, although at this precise moment I’m very focused on making work for Prototypes, an upcoming solo show at Limerick City Gallery of Art. I’m working with a curator called Mary Conlon who is the director of another gallery called Ormston House. The show will feature a mix of older works, some of which have been remade or reconstructed, and new work (sculptures, video and architectural interventions) which I have developed specifically for Limerick.

What inspired you to do this project?

I have what you might call a research-based practice, so the notion of inspiration, which I think of as a sudden blinding flash of light, doesn’t describe how things come together for me all that accurately. The process is probably better described by the word accumulation. I make things, and read and research around the topics that interest me, and then slowly over a period of time, often through trial and error, things begin taking shape.

For the last few years, I’ve been interested in the relationship between certain immaterial things, for example language

and computer programmes, and the built environment e.g. buildings, roads, urban and suburban spaces. The term embodied knowledge is used to describe things you know intuitively through your body. I’m interested in how embodied knowledge relates to things that you might have learned consciously, in school, through reading books or by watching documentaries.

What’s next?

After the show in Limerick, I’ll be spending some time in Dundee in Scotland. The Commonwealth Games is being hosted by Scotland this year, and this work will be part of a series of commissions which relate to the various venues being used for the games. I’ll be working with an organisation called Collective to develop a new performance piece in relation to Barry Buddon which is the venue for the shooting events.

TACTIC PERFORMANCE EVENING - THE YOUNG ONESFRI | 25 JUL | 7PM | FREEMeaning woven like the many threads of a rope finds its strength not in the individual elements but in the totality of its construct. It is impenetrable and serves only to degrade in its deconstruction producing meaningless, conflicting and partially formed fragments. To seek this deeper meaning beneath the surface will lead the viewer into an absurd labyrinth devoid of inherent essential meaning. This human tendency to search for meaning is the absurd act itself; both humorous and tragic in its inane quest. An evening of performance from Tactic.
