BE COOL AT THE POOL

Managers Message —by Anthony Chelena

Summer is in full

swing and the Club

is bustling with

activity. Pull into the

parking lot any day

at lunchtime and the

adventure to find a

good parking space begins. It shouldn’t

be a surprise to anyone that handicap

parking spaces are at a premium- so much

so that the Board of Directors recently

had discussions about ways to make

the Clubhouses more accessible for our

Members who need a close parking space.

We have 14 handicap parking spaces at the

Club. But if we had 30, it still might not be

enough to accommodate every Member

entitled to use a handicap space. So why

don’t we just make 30 handicap spaces?

Because our Members most likely to use

a handicap space arrive at mealtime, but

there are Members visiting the Club all

times of the day for other Club activities.

So if you arrive at the Club and can’t find a

handicap parking space, step inside and see

Emily and she will suggest an unmarked

area for you to park. And especially if

you are playing golf and are entitled to a

handicap space, perhaps one of our cart

staff can meet you in the parking lot with

golf cart service. Just stop in front of the

golf shop and let them know. They will be

glad to serve you.

Think you don’t have time to play golf?

Ricky Fowler thinks you aren’t planning

enough into your day: https://www.

youtube.com/watch?v=Vp63Y36Mc24

Last month Elaine Harris invited me to

play golf with a Thursday morning ladies’

group. The foursome included Sally Boyd,

Elaine Harris, Sue Robbins and me. I

expected it to be fun, but it turned out to

be a lot of fun. At the end of the day I lost

$1.25. I’d call that a bargain.

It is GREAT to be back in full season.

The pool is busy every hour that the sun

is shining. Golfers are enjoying the golf

course in prime condition. Tennis players

are active in the mornings and evenings.

I’m so excited to see the Junior Golf and

Junior Tennis participation. And the dining

rooms have their usual crowds. People

not familiar with our Club frequently ask

me how seasonal our Club is. We estimate

that about 30% of our Members spend

the winter away from Hendersonville. But

as you can see from the graphlater in the

newsletter, Clubhouse dining activity is

heavily influenced by Christmas, January

and February, but is relatively consistent

for the other 9 months. Golf, as you would

expect, is dependent on weather.

Lewis Grizzard was a close friend of my

parents when I was a child. At that time

he was a sports writer for the Atlanta

Constitution. He later became a humorist/

commentator on southern culture and

wrote many books on the subject. In July

of every year, he wrote a column for the

Atlanta Constitution that began, “Hot

damn, it’s football season!” And to this day

I feel the same way in July when the college

football players report to camp. How’s your

team looking for this year?

President’s Message —by Steve Johnson

Summertime

is a great time

of year around

Hendersonville

Country Club. Every

day seems to have

something going on.

It seems like I don’t go anywhere around

town without someone telling me about

their recent visit to the Club.

This is also the time of the year to make

preparations for the Equity Member’s

Annual meeting. The Club bylaws

provide that the meeting will be held at

7:00 PM on the 2nd Monday of August-

this year August 11. Each Equity Member

will receive a notice of the meeting in July.

The notice will also contain a condensed

financial statement and a ballot to elect

directors. The minutes from last year’s

annual meeting can be found on the

Club’s website www.hendersonvillecc.

com. The complete audited financial

statements will be posted on the website

in mid-July, soon after they are released

by our auditors. Meanwhile, any Member

is welcome to visit with Anthony Chelena

to review the Club’s detailed financial

statements.

The Nominating Committee Chaired

by Bill Boswell and consisting of Jimmy

Chandler, Jack Davis, Bill Smith and

Lavinnia Zimmerman has nominated the

following Equity Members for election

to the Hendersonville Country Club

Board of Directors: Tom Cooper, Henry

Johnson, Mike Roper and Jim Sparks. If

you are interested in more information

on the nominating process, you can

check the Club bylaws on the website or

call Anthony Chelena. And if you do not

currently have Equity and wish to do so,

contact Anthony and he will gladly make

the arrangements.

See you at the Club…

Golf News—by Ben Balentine

Family Golf started on Saturday,

June 14 and will continue each

Saturday throughout the summer.

We want to encourage Mom, Dad

and all the kids to come out and

have fun playing golf as a family. No

age limit or skill level is required. There is no charge and

no commitment and it is open to all Members. Please

call the golf shop to sign up for play, which begins at

11:30 am. Hope to see you in the coming weeks.

PGA Junior League Golf started off with a BANG with

23 of our juniors signing up to play in the 13 and under

program. We have 3 teams, one made up of 8 juniors

and two teams with 7, each having their own jersey,

either blue, purple or white. Play is every Thursday at

4:30 and everyone is invited to come and see how our

juniors are progressing. Thanks to all the juniors

and parents for making our first Junior League such

a huge success.

I have been approached by several Members to ask our

golfers NOT to get their ball out of the hole with their

putter head because it tears up the hole. We have a

device in the golf shop that was designed just for

that purpose.

The Men’s Member-Guest Tournament has a full field

once again and is scheduled to be held on July 10, 11 &

12 with a rain date on the 13th.

sGolf Tips —by Jay King

As I write this article,

the best golfers in the

world are gathering

in Pinehurst for the

women’s and men’s

U.S. Opens. It is

hard for me to think

about Pinehurst #2 without remembering

Payne Stewart. I can see him standing on

one leg, punching the air after he made

the biggest putt of his life. I can also

remember how his golf swing was the

definition of smooth power.

Payne would practice hitting a driver

with a full swing, but only hitting 25% of

his normal distance. This slow motion

swing promoted balance with a smooth

continuous motion that only accelerated

through impact. Doing this drill may take

some time to get used to, as you need full

control of the golf club. With practice,

you will start feeling more solid contact

with this slow motion drill. Hopefully

this drill will help your normal swing to

be more fluid and under control as you

increase the club-head speed through

impact to a nice finish.

Ben Hogan said, “Whenever I am working

on something, I always do it in slow

motion.”

GREAT SHOTSBarbra Clay scored a hole-in-one on the 103 yard 17th hole using a 6 iron. She was playing the Mountain View Course at Callaway Gardens. This was Barbara’s first hole in one.

Scott Miller made an eagle 3 on the par 5 5th.

Bill Orr made an eagle 2 on Hole # 6 using a hybrid for his second shot.

Bill Alexander bettered his age by one shot, shooting a 79.

SMGA —by Dick DuRose

Upcoming events in July include our first

match against Cummings Cove for the

prestigious Jones Gap trophy as well as

bragging rights. We will play away on

Wednesday, July 9. You can sign up for this

event on the SMGA website. The second

match at home will be in September.

Near the end of the month is the SMGA

Championship, a two-day tournament on

Monday and Tuesday, July 28 & 29. Note

that to be eligible for this tournament,

you must have played in at least 5 SMGA

rounds prior to the Championship. If

you have not played in this event in the

past, give it a try. The competition is keen

without being vicious. The fee includes

breakfast on Monday morning and lunch

after the round on Tuesday.

For those of you who have asked, there

is another SMGA column on the SMGA

website which recaps the results and foibles

of our various events. Click on the NEWS

tab to find it.

Grounds —by Craig DeJong

So far, so good. July

brings us a little less

than halfway through

the heat of the golf

season. I am optimistic

about the condition

of the course, and

thankful for a diligent

staff to keep us moving forward. July

is a busy month for our department

agronomically and for tournaments. The

Men’s Member/Guest, WNC Juniors, and

the SMGA Championship are a few of

the tournaments that will keep us and the

Golf Shop Staff busy. Also, remember that

July 15, 16 (Tuesday and Wednesday) the

golf course will be closed for aerification.

These are two very important days for us

to perform numerous cultural practices

ensuring the health of our turfgrass

throughout the remainder of the summer.

As you play golf during the heat of the

day, you may encounter some of our staff

members hand watering various parts of

the golf course, primarily tees and greens.

At times this is necessary to maintain these

playing surfaces. We cannot rely solely

on the irrigation system to deliver the

necessary water for these areas of turf to

survive. We typically do our best to stay

clear of play while watering, but due to

certain circumstances we may need to water

in and around play. We appreciate your

understanding and patience.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

WGA 18-Hole —by Sandy Sessoms

June has been a great golf month!

We began with our Member/Member

on June 3 with very competitive

teams. Our grand winners were

Nancy Bellick and Megan Wilson.

All other winners can be found on

our web site. We also were able to

entertain our guests in our “Noah’s

Arc” Member/Guest tournament.

That began with a cocktail party and

putting contest on June 11; a breakfast

followed by a 4-person best-two-ball

event on June 12; and finally with an

awards luncheon after the golf.

June’s final two events consisted of a

4-person team event and a flighted T

and F game counting only the holes

beginning with “T” or “F”.

July began with our ever-popular

Solheim Cup which consisted of two

days of team competition similar

to the LPGA format: twosomes

match play and individual match

play. Camaraderie and team spirit is

always a big part of this all inclusive

competition. We thank the two

captains, Debby Chapman and Dee

Tichenor for all of their enthusiastic

support!

Connestee Falls CC was our

destination for Interclub on June 10.

Catawba CC was the location for

Western Carolina in June.

Things to watch for in the next month:Western Carolina will be at CC of

Spartanburg. Watch the bulletin

board for the sign-up sheet.

Interclub will be at CC of Asheville

on July 31. Again, watch the bulletin

board!

More weekly tournaments will give

us opportunities to compete and have

fun!

Finally, be sure to sign up for our

Club Championship tournament. It

is earlier than it has been in the past.

The dates are August 5 and 7, with the

8th as a rain date.

The picture shown is of Sue Robbins,

our State Day Champion that was

held on May 13. Congratulations to

Sue!!

WGA 9-Hole —by Dorothy Spall

In June, our 9-hole ladies had our first opportunity to play the new Laurel Course.

We enjoyed the new challenge…just because the course is shorter, you still have

to putt the ball! And a BIG CONGRATS to Kathryn Deyerle for hitting the Club’s

first hole in one from the Laurel Tees! She scored the hole-in-one on the 78 yard

17th hole using a 4 hybrid.

We are having a great start to summer here at the

Tennis Courts. Jr clinics are going well.

Clay courts are filled with daily play. Please

remember to sign in your guest. This can be done

online when you make your court reservation. Also,

please cancel your court reservation if you do not

plan to use it. WE ARE BUSY! WE LOVE IT!!

Men’s and Ladies Nights are going well.

PLEASE REMEMBER THESE ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE DROP

IN. Email [email protected] if you are interested in playing.

With our courts being busy with member play, lessons, and league play,

it is very important for me to know in advance how many players are

participating in Men’s Night (Tuesdays) or Ladies’ Night (Thursdays)

Knowing in advance I can try to make sure we have even numbers, also.
