Do you miss face-to-face communication? Want a real person on the end of the line? Have you laughed at the state of risk management and public liability restrictions these days? ‘One Point 618’, an Adelaide-based dance company formed by Katrina Lazaroff presents INVOLUNTARY, which is the ironic realisation of the struggles everyone with a password will understand. Reclaim your ticket back to reality! Watch these amazing dancers interpret the emotion, the inherent comedy and the impact of bureaucracy and technological change, by giving you permission to laugh at yourself and everyone around you for ‘virtually’ losing their mind.“The great appeal in Lazaroff’s work lies in the humour that informs each performance and her determination that the dancers appear as regular people” Anne Thompson – ‘Real Time Magazine’

In JUST THE TICKET, meet Susan. She’s scatty, chatty and in a league of her own.“So here I am - with the same dream and the same rucksack...but with 30 years of extra baggage!”Life may have left her friends looking forward to their next facelift, the arrival of grandchildren, or a shred of gossip about the neighbours, but Susan dreams of escape. To hell with middle age; she’s off to relive the fun of her younger years.Eccentric, clumsy and unwaveringly optimistic, for Susan the only way forward is back. She wants to feel alive again, to be on the edge - and preferably, seated at the bar. She packs her bag and heads to Sydney to retrace the steps of a holiday she took with friends years ago. Determined to have as much fun as in her 20s, Susan’s adventures lead her back to old ground...but is it like old times?“...very clever...just the ticket for an evening full of laughs.” Arts Hub

The Melbourne Chamber Orchestra (MCO) is back in Portland to present ELEGIES AND DANCES, an emotionally-charged homage to the two great moods of the string orchestra: the sparkling drive of the dance, and the poignancy of the elegy. Stirring Bachrich and Stokowski arrangements of famous Baroque adagios will take your breath away. On the dance card are Bartók’s rustic regionalism and Grieg’s enduring tribute to the courtly manners of the eighteenth century. With over 250 concerto appearances to his credit, MCO Artistic Director William Hennessy is one of Australia’s best-loved soloists and his performance of Bach’s Concerto in A minor in this program is an event not to be missed.William Hennessy Director & Violin “William Hennessy is one of the finest musicians Australia has produced.” Musical America

AS WE FORGIVE is a solo play written by Tom Holloway especially for Robert Jarman and is directed by the award-winning Julian Meyrick. The show presents the bravura Jarman in the roles of three solitary men who are injured yet enduring, grieving yet gregarious, and who must each confront the fact and act of forgiveness in their lives. In AS WE FORGIVE, Holloway explores the questions: “When is doing the wrong thing, the right thing?” “Are there limits to even the most absolute moral law?” “Can evil ever be justified?”This thought-provoking show is enriched by the sensitivity and warmth of Robert Jarman’s generous performance, and the live original cello music which threads through the evening.“This is mature drama, elegantly and meticulously prepared. Like all great theatre we just come out feeling that little bitty more human” Hobart Mercury

Swelling with heart and humour, six sons tell the stories of their mothers as they recount their lives from childhood to adulthood, and the stumbles and triumphs they encountered along the way. Nick Parnell is celebrated as one of the most exciting vibes players in the world today, and in VIBES VIRTUOSO, he makes old music new again, injecting energy into a repertoire that might be familiar to some, but definitely inspirational to all. With a spirit of recklessness, Parnell takes one of the newest of classical instruments and gives it a genre-bending makeover. Steel yourself for his mallets of musical mastery.Favourites such as Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’, Albeniz’s Tango and Handel’s ‘Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’ – have been cleverly re-imagined by Parnell to create a whole new, vibrant listening experience. The vibraphone superbly melded with piano gets its moment in the spotlight, ranging from the technically challenging to sheer lyrical beauty in the space of a heartbeat.“Nick Parnell is a complete star. A brilliant and beautiful performer.” Emma Ayres – ABC Classic FM Breakfast Program

2014 marks the centenary of laying the foundation stone for the Henty Memorial on Portland’s Ploughed Field in Bentinck Street. The memorial wasn’t officially unveiled until the ‘Back To Portland’ celebration of 1922, the ceremony possibly delayed by the outbreak of World War One. This display looks at three memorials to the town’s pioneering past - the Henty Memorial; the Henty Landing Memorial off Cliff Street, unveiled in 1934 during Portland’s centenary celebrations; and the Pioneer Women’s Memorial in the Memorial Triangle, unveiled in 1936. A small collection of vintage souvenirs showing images of the pioneer memorials is also included in the display.

Although not formally documented, there is no doubt that the original inhabitants of the region – the indigenous population – would have made regular use of what is now known as Portland Bay.This exhibition focuses on the maritime activities that resulted from European settlement, commencing with the naming of the Portland Bay by Lieutenant James Grant when he sailed past in December 1800.The whalers and sealers set up stations along the shore line in the 1820s, and Portland harbour has been a hive of maritime activity ever since. The exhibition documents some of the vessels in Portland Bay over 180 years through a series of illustrations and photographs. Included are images of Grant’s Lady Nelson; the Henty family’s trading vessels; immigrant ships of the 1850s; the lighters which brought passengers and cargo ashore; Portland’s lifeboat; Couta boats; the regularly visiting steamers; tugboats and workboats; and the tall ships of the bicentennial re-enactment of 1988.
