PET PROFILEIvey

Hello. My full American Kennel Club name is Absolutely Divine. My

friends call me Ivey. I am a Whippet from Sugar Valley Farm in

Georgia. I am currently residing in Charlotte, North Carolina. My

mother is Absolutely Unanimous and my father is Pinnacle Tennessee

Whiskey; both award-winning, show dogs. Although my father has

won more than twenty “Best In Show” awards, including “Best In

Show” at The National Dog Show in 2018, I knew my destiny was

different.

Having moved from a farm to a city, I have adapted very well. I

joined a Community Stream Cleaning and Native Plant Restoration

group, which inspired me to adopt my own Center City Street to

clean, as well. My future goals include working with local and state

officials to bring attention to missing sidewalks and truncated dome

mats. I would like to share my hangout hot spots, but I break leash laws due to my formal training and “recall is out-

standing”, if I may quote a local board member of The National Audubon Society. I will share that Auntie Syl, of

AlphaHound Pet Sitting, will not allow me to break any laws. I love and give her full trust over my daily needs.

This summer, I do have big dreams of catching squirrels, hiking, taking naps, and visiting my all-time favorite person,

Auntie Heather, at her new farm. I have traveled to six states in my short life, encouraging me to secure a full-time

photographer. To view my digital life, visit IveyTheWhippet on Instagram. Here, you will see I am simply your average

teenager showcasing my best life, whilst running at top speed, frolicking in nature, shaming Litter Bugs, and working

angles for selfies. When visiting me on Instagram, feel free to follow or comment, but please note that the only

humans I follow are dog humans; such as my former handler Justin and (his) Snoop Dogg.

If you see me around town acting as if I could win “Best In Dog Park”, say hello. Most importantly, thank you My City

Magazine for this feature. It makes me feel welcomed to Charlotte, making my move Absolutely Divine!

TOMMY’S PUBby: Ellen Gurley

The owner of Tommy’s Pub, Jamie Starks, had to saygoodbye to the first location (at 2007 Central Avenue)in 2016. Originally owned by Tommy Karras, then JimMcNally, for whom Starks worked for about ten years, the first building was sold. Folks were angry. Theyblamed gentrification. Those were both logical responses.Starks, however, just focused on finding a new space inwhich to reopen. In 2017, with his partner, Stacy Badgerby his side, he did just that. Selecting the corner unit inthe strip of Eastway Crossing Shopping Center, they areback up and running. If you patronized the first one, you’ll recognize a lot of the décor and the faces.(Make shure to check out the bar which features a collage of pictures by Tricia Coyne’s. Her book “LastCall” showcases decades of customers and was assembled and resin-covered by Heather Alexanderand Tyler Broome.) The 3124 Eastway Drive (Suite 710)reincarnation has more free parking than any othermusic venue in town and NEVER charges cover affordingyou the opportunity to easily see local acts in an intimateenvironment that a lot of people call “home”.

Jason Renegar, of the Flight Risks, tells My City Magazine,“I love Tommy's! Jamie, Stacy, and all the folks there arethe real deal. For a smaller venue, we always get a bigshow feel with the intimacy of a good old family pub.

Even when we aren't playing, they are welcoming andaccommodating. Feels like home.”

Mark Ervin of Boron Heist is a legally blind musician intown that says “I have tons of positive things that I couldsay about that place. It has the most handicap accessible floor plan (of any other venue I play), theparking and entrance are great, and they have themost outgoing bartenders / operators around. It is avery welcoming pub where multiple subcultures cancome together as one. Jamie and Stacy are awesomepeople and they run a very nice tension-free minglingspot. It feels less like a business and more like a community. You feel less like a customer and more likea participant (in something wonderful).”

“Tommy's Pub makes me feel like I'm home,“ TiffTantrum of No Anger Control says. “I feel safe andcared about as soon as I cross their threshold. Jamieand Stacy are truly there for this community. We areblessed to have them!”

Mark Lynch, the booking agent for Tommy’s Pub, simplysays that it is “one of the last old school dive bars.” Iknow he meant in Charlotte, but I think I have seen a lotof nationwide venues with a quaint atmosphere fall tothe wayside as larger ones come in. Starks is constantly

celebrating his neighbours like VisArt Video. He loves what is happening in that area and genuinely wants you to come check it out. You can often see one of theowners of the EastSide Local Eatery, another business inthe strip, in there. Brenda Lee Gambill says that sheloves the fact that she is a part of this community.“Tommy’s is a local treasure. Jamie runs a comfortableplace to unwind. (They have a) great staff with goodlive music regularly.”

Here’s the deal. Y’all get mad about old places gettingplowed, yet I’ve yet to see most of y’all at (the new)Tommy’s Pub. Are you still championing the ThirstyBeaver for staying put and continuing to wave theirproverbial middle finger at all of the growth aroundthem? That’s a good reason to go visit Tommy’s.Were you scared you were going to lose the WorldFamous Milestone Club recently? Then you get it. Goto Tommy’s. Are you still supporting Amos’ after theyhave moved multiple times to stay open? Yep, I’mgoing to say go to Tommy’s. Were you crushed whenyou lost the Double Door Inn and Philosopher Stone?

You should probably GO TO TOMMY’S. This writer andso many more individuals can say that this is theirfavourite place to catch a show. You should join themthere.

ASK THE CLOWNWhat do I Know? I’m just a Clown : May | June 2019“Ask the Clown” : an advicecolumn by The Clown

something that could be considered cheating. Thiswould eliminate the possibility of a family member in town, a business dinner, etc. I am guessing that younoticed a reaction from him when you went to greetthem. If there was any sort of shock or awkwardnessinvolved, it may be suspicious. On the other hand, youcould go directly to your friend and let her know whatyou observed. She may or may not know, but yourfriendship would be better served by letting her know.I think I would choose the latter.Loyalty is priceless, The Clown_____________________________________

Dear Clown,The family that lives across the street from me includestwo children that are often playing in the front yard.Recently, I have noticed some bruising on their armsand legs. Thinking that they may have just beenbruised from playing, I kept an eye out and I make apoint to talk to the kids when they are outside. Assome bruises faded, others would appear. The latestwas a bandaged injury on the younger one’s forehead. When I asked what happened, the childshied away and stopped talking. Am I seeing abuse?Sincerely, Protector

Dear Protector,The story you are telling has the earmarks of abuse. Ananonymous report to child services would be helpful.Even if you are wrong, it is the right thing to do. Call.At all costs, The Clown

THINGS I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TELL YOU1. People are going to hurt your feelings. Be prepared for it and brush it off.2. Your opinion matters when people ask for it, otherwise, keep it inside.3. Be inclusive.4. Shatter negative presumptions as often as possible.5. Everything is not a crisis.

DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE CLOWN? WRITE HIM AT [email protected]

Dear Clown,I am trying to convince my aunt that she is living in atoxic situation. When she attends any family gathering, her fiancée always becomes the loudest and keepsher subdued form any conversations. They also leavewhen he says it is time and they seldom say good-bye to everyone. She is currently financially trappedby this man, as well. We have not seen him be physicallyabusive, but we have noticed a change in her behavior. How can we help get her out of this?Sincerely, Concerned Niece

Dear Concerned Niece,From what you have written, I can gather that youare close with your aunt. Recruit one other personthat she trusts and have a gut-level conversation withher. Tell her what you see, listen, and then determineactions to move forward. She may be in a sort of rutthat is allowing her to accept this behavior now, orshe may feel stuck and abandoned. This conversationwill clarify that. I am hoping that your family will support her through any needed changes.Abuse is never needed, The Clown_____________________________________

Dear Clown,I was out last night and noticed an acquaintancewas at the same restaurant. I went over to say helloand saw that he had a woman with him at dinner. Iintroduced myself to her and joined my group again. The trouble with this is that it looked like a romanticdinner and this man is currently living with, and involved with, one of my dear friends who wouldhave been working night shifts at the hospital. I haveyet to talk to either of them about this and I wonder ifI should.Sincerely, Suspicious

Dear Suspicious,This is troublesome. On one hand, you could ask theguy about it and gauge his reaction to see if it was

DEBORAH TRIPLETTby: Ellen Gurley

It’s far from difficult as a journalist to NOT insert yourself in the subject’s

narrative, especially when you own the fluffiest of advocacy

publications in town and you only print editorials. That being said, it is

about to get warm and it is going to be fuzzy. I have known Deborah

Triplett for many years and for all of which, I wanted to be(come)

her. I am quite the wanna be. She is the epitome for empowerment

of the less represented, the embodiment of community stewardship,

and she possesses a creativity and drive to be marveled.

One afternoon, before my shift was about to end for the day at 300

East Restaurant, Deborah walked in. This wasn’t uncommon at all,

however this time was different. As I was seating her and her brother,

Ricky, I was about to ask her how she was, but she had little, or no,

poker face that day. She leaned in and told me that she just found

out that she had Cancer, prefacing it with don’t tell anybody. I was

frozen, but mentioned something about modern medicine miracles

or some crap. I had three shifts drinks that day.

For weeks, she waited until she was ready to share with the world. At

which point, the outpouring of love was so generous that I almost

drowned-ed from the waves. I, too, waited, until she told her story

and other media outlets celebrated her. One quote stuck with me

and I believed every ounce of its sentiment. In April, she told

www.CharlotteFive.com that she was going to “kick its *ss (no matter) what(ever) it takes”. Back in February, Emma

Way, editor of www.CharlotteMagazine.com, said “Triplett is battling Cancer with an army of pearly whites-and

winning.” I knew she was right. Getting wind that she HAD indeed kicked its *ss was the best news I’d heard since… I

literally don’t know.

I reached out to a few of her amazing local colleagues. A few were shook (like something had “happened”). I realize

now that I should have lead with that. Her tribe is huge, but I am lucky enough to have caught up with, and also

know, a few of them. “I am glad that Deborah is still with us. She has been very ill with Cancer. She is a fantastic

gardener. Magical even.” musician and activist Phoenixsong Alysia Stellamaris shared with My City Magazine.

Sought-after stylist and make-up artist, Kymm McLayne, had to say that “Deborah is the epitome of an artist with an

open mind and heart. She’s a fearless force AND a vocal voice. Whether she is defending, advocating, or conquering

social injustice, her sense of equality is only surpassed by her bad*ss style.”

I met Deborah when she was working at the magazine SKIRT and I was at a visitor publication (TRIP). I loved everything

about SKIRT and fell in love with her photography on the spot. I was lucky enough to have had a post-pregnancy,

Page 11: JULY | AUGUST | 2019 - My City Magazine...back up and running. If you patronized the first one, you’ll recognize a lot of the décor and the faces. (Make shure to check out the bar

breastfeeding (gasp) photo shoot with her. I won a

raffle for the Light Factory, which many of you would

not know about, if it weren’t for her. (Spoiler: it is a

photography studio with which any Charlotte resident

should become familiar. Also, she invented

www.YardArtDay.org, which is every year here in

Charlotte on Labor Day. She rallies residents to erect

ANY type / medium of art in their yards. The locations

are mapped out pre-event upon registration and you

can make an entire weekend out of enjoying the

installations. You’re welcome.)

Tom Hanchett, everyone‘s favourite historian, echoed

this in saying that “Deborah Triplett’s Yard Art Day is

brilliant on so many levels. It says that art is about

DOING, not just displaying. It says art is not merely the

province of curators and colleges, but belongs to all

of us. DO art … in public.” (Editor’s note: Ugh, his

words are so much better than mine.)

One My City Magazine employee wanted in on the

article, upon hearing what was on the desk for this

issue. Mandi Brown, resident health nut, tells us that

she “met Deborah many years ago whilst sitting at

the bar of Pewter Rose. I knew who she was before I

approached her. Most people in Charlotte know

Deborah. She is an intricate and purposeful part of

our artistic landscape. When I approached her and

told her I was a hair and makeup artist and that I love

her work, much like a star-struck fan, she was so kind,

appreciative, and humble. Since that day, we have

kept in touch. She has even photographed me and

my son and we have spent some lovely, quality time

together.“

“One of the best moments was attending last year’s

Yard Art Day "live art" wherein a houseful of women

dressed up as the Handmaid's Tale cast.” Mandi

continues, “I was filled with pride as we walked out in

silence. A crowd of people, including the local news,

were standing out front to see it. All I could think was,

Deborah can make some amazing magic happen.

She REALLY made people show up. She is one of my

favorite people in Charlotte, compete with a smile

and laugh that will fill a room and (take up space in)

your heart.” Crap. And I thought I had a girl crush on

her. Calm it, Mandi.

When I ask people about Deborah Triplett, majority of

folks don’t really mention her professional accom-

plishments, just the ways that she betters our region

and, in turn, the world. They just want to speak to her

character and that speaks volumes of who she is as a

person. “Deborah shares her view of the world

through her heart’s filters: grace, beauty, compassion,

and love. She’s a kind soul and a champion of equality.

When I think of DT, I see her brilliant smile and her

gorgeous, red lips.” Kelly King, longtime friend of hers

and realtor at www.SavvyCharlotte.com tells me.

Heck, everyone loves her. If this isn’t a living case of

“love wins”, I don’t know what is.

- Not the end. That new beginning / happily ever

after, tho.

MURTO MADE DISTILLERYBB’S BOOZIE & NUTTY NIGHT CAPCraft Cocktail Recipeby: Sabrina “the Lady Beans” Hayko

When I began my adventure with My City Magazine, I stumbled

upon an amazing product: Nut Crackin Amaretto. It changed how I

viewed Amaretto and I decided it was time for me to meet its

maker, Tony Curella. This journey took me to Murto Made Distillery in

Huntersville for a sit down with Tony and owner/head distiller Jon

Murto. Stepping into the tasting room takes you back to the prohibition

era with its dark walls and velvet furniture; quite a cozy place for a

chat about booze. Tony was a military man. Upon leaving the Air

Force, he moved to Wisconsin to get into the artisan cheese business.

When it came time to retire, he and his wife were trying to decide if

they should move to Arizona or North Carolina. Luckily for us, they

chose North Carolina.

Tony first learned how to make moonshine from his brick mason.

After a brief stint in that business, he decided to focus on cordials,

due to the momentum of the craft cocktail movement. This is when

he walked into Murto Made for a tasting and met Jon. They tasted each other’s products and decided to make

magic together. With so many fabulous products coming out of one building (vodka made with bourbon mash,

whiskey, bourbon, Tony’s cordials in peach and citrus, plus, my fave, the Amaretto, with spiced rum coming soon) it

only seemed right to make more than one drink. They open the distillery for tours and tastings every Saturday from

12-5pm, so pop in and tell the boys that I sent you!
