Coined by Benjamin Bloom, mastery learning is predicated on the notion that anyone can learn given the right circumstances. These circumstances include: sufficient time, appropriate instruction, and feedback on learning. Mastery learning supports students in gradually building and demonstrating mastery of concepts and skills before they move on to another level. In this way, students focus on understanding and mastering foundational skills.” Proficiency in Material at Every Level “Mastery learning leads to automaticity … achieved through practice. Some researchers contend that mastering a skill requires practicing the skill at least 24 times to obtain just 80% mastery Summer Planning “Kumon is not only designed to be a program that improves math skills, but so much more. Children increase their concentration ability, improve their self- confidence and develop good, consistent study habits. All year round your child is developing these skills, so why stop during the summer? Time away from Kumon study will reverse many of the habits your child has acquired. With school finished, many students lack a structured routine, and a summer study is a great way to keep them mentally active. Without consistent work, children may never reach their full potential …, which, as you know, is the ultimate goal of our program. When planning your summer holidays, consider taking Kumon along. Wherever you are, the program is easy to bring along. Reducing worksheets can also be done to accommodate your plans. Remember, it pays to be consistent.” NOTE: If you are planning to go on vacation, please submit a completed Vacation Notice Form (at Front Desk) so that homework can be arranged accordingly. Go to our website at http://www.kumonberryessa.com for center information, newsletters, pictures and more! Did you know … A total of 650 students from 8 Kumon Centers attended the 2018 Math Contest this year? And 33% of the Math Contest attendees from Berryessa Kumon ranked from 1st place to 5th place. Well done, everyone! We applaud your efforts. Come join the Contest in 2019! Kumon’s curriculum design supports this kind of learning. Kumon students approach tests with a high degree of accuracy, speed and confidence, knowing that they have truly mastered concepts and skills.” Improved Study Skills: Independence “Students work independently in examining the models, reading the instructions, and completing the problems. Through this self-teaching approach, students learn to focus and sustain their attention on their work and sustain their attention on their work and engage in the very processes that support them in developing cognitive strategies. Kumon-based learning I student-, rather than Instructor-driven. Students develop skills in independence, concentration, and persistence.”
