Driver of the Week...Continued on Pg. B7

During my years as an automotive journalist, I’ve had the opportunity to drive many nice vehicles.

I do, however, spend most of my time road testing the kinds of cars, minivans, crossovers and SUVs that people typically buy.

Still, I like to dream, and there are several cars on my “bucket list” that I hope someday I’ll drive.

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport is not on that list.

Why? It’s just so far up the automotive ladder that I hadn’t really considered it.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Porsche 911 GT2 RS and the Lexus LFA are a stretch. The Veyron is a quantum leap.

At 1.4 million Euros (just under $2 million CAD), this car is not only the world’s most expensive production car, it is also the most powerful. A combination that could have me indentured to Bugatti for life, should I ever put a scratch on it.

So when I received the emailed invitation, I took all into consideration: $2 million, 1001 horsepower, top speed of 407 km/h.

Hmmm…I’ll bet the sender had my response

before even moving his cursor off the “send” button.

A few days later in Oakville, I was standing beside American Le Mans Series veteran Butch Leitzinger, admiring what I would consider one of the world’s most stunning cars.

I’ve seen a number of exotics, some gorgeous, some – like the Enzo Ferrari – not, but the Veyron is in a class by itself.

“Quite often, supercars are more about pure function and looks are secondary,” said Leitzinger.

“With Bugatti, as in Bugattis of the past, they’ve always been a marriage of art and function. A lot of time was spent on the styling.”

But as I had precious little time with the car, I was far more curious about the driving experience than the aesthetic experience. Thankfully, Butch was not one to linger on design principles and other abstractions.

“Normally, cars like these are racecars,” Leitzinger continued, “and racecars are very good at going fast, but not so good at going slow. When

ask for it, it delivers the ultimate performance.”

For starters, it will sprint from zero to 100 clicks in 2.7 seconds. Not bad, considering how much inertia the engine must overcome in launching nearly two tons of stainless steel, titanium, magnesium, aluminum and carbon fibre.

And once the Veyron gets going full steam with one thousand horses (and 922 lb/ft of torque) behind it, there’s no holding it back. According to Bugatti, the Grand Sport will hit 200 kilometres an hour in just 7.3 seconds – which is roughly the time it takes for an average sports sedan to reach half that speed.

Fast-forward to 16.7 seconds, and the car will top 300 kilometres an hour.

And the Veyron will go even faster – 407 km/h to be exact. Imagine the speeding ticket.

Behind all that power is a 16-cylinder engine in a W-16 configuration: four banks of four cylinders, each bank with its own turbocharger. And it produces much of its power at lower revs than you’d expect from a supercar.

“Typically, high-end cars like this have very high-revving, very high-stressed engines, and you have to shift them a lot to keep in the power band, kind of like a motorcycle,” explains Leitzinger.

The Veyron, in contrast, has 538 lb/ft available from 1,000 rpm and can dish out peak torque from about 2,500 rpm. Which means at just about any time during your gentle Sunday drive, you can plant the pedal and unleash

the beast.Sure, there’s a slight hesitation –

very slight – followed by a ‘whomp’ as you’re thumped in the back and the car blasts forward with its big air intakes behind the front seats gulping massive amounts of air.

“From a dead stop… it takes off like a scalded cat,” added

Leitzinger. “But you can literally

drive it with two fingers. It goes dead straight. The Veyron is a car that takes

care of you – you don’t have to manhandle it to keep

it under control.”It’s really too bad we weren’t doing

this on the Autobahn, as I had to remain ever vigilant about keeping within the speed limit.

To paraphrase a colleague, driving a Veyron in Ontario is like keeping a cheetah in your apartment.

Part of the Grand Sport’s ease of

use is in its seven-speed DSG gearbox. With twin clutches – one controlling first, third, fifth and seventh gears; the other handling reverse, second, fourth and sixth – no matter what gear you’re in, the next has been selected and is ready to go.

Which, of course, means quicker shifting and no ‘clunk’ with each gear change. Not that I’d expect any clunking in a $2 million car.

You can leave the transmission in fully automatic mode, or use the paddle shifters. I chose to let the transmission find its own gears – at least in the beginning – as I wanted my full attention on the road ahead.

I didn’t want to be the next YouTube sensation, starring in “Guy rolls a Veyron.”

I would like to rave about the light steering, the tight, but reasonably forgiving suspension and the Veyron’s exceptional composure. But I just didn’t have enough time to get a full sense of the driving dynamics.

You need some type of closed course or racetrack to really tap into the Veyron’s capability.

I also spent little time examining the car’s simple, but elegant, layout of instruments and controls. These employ a minimalist aesthetic that appears to be as much about artistry and craftsmanship as it does about ergonomics.

And yes, the Veyron Grand Sport does offer a full suite of amenities. But none are a surprise at the price.

For the prospective Veyron buyer, it’s not so much a question of value, but one of pedigree and exclusivity.

According to Leitzinger, the typical owner already has a collection of 20 or more cars and appreciates the Veyron for its engineering, much as an art collector would appreciate a fine painting.

John Hill, the company’s sales director for North and South America, adds that buyers tend to be world citizens, with residences around the globe. There are Canadian owners, but their cars are, for the most part, elsewhere.

Probably where the weather and speed limits are more favourable.

As for the price, even if you can part with 1.4 million Euros, be prepared for lofty maintenance costs.

You can’t take this car to your nearest quicky lube for an oil and filter change.

According to Hill, most dealers are trained to do repairs, and maintenance is done every 12 months or 3,000 miles. First year maintenance runs about $25,000 – and it’s a two-week job.

As for rubber, not just any tires will do, so Michelin hand-made those on the Grand Sport.

I inquired about the cost of replacing them, to which Hill casually replied, $40,000 for the set.

He added: “If you were buying a Picasso, you probably wouldn’t ask for the cost of the frame.”

Point taken.

REACHING OVER

100,000+HOMES EVERY

ISSUE

By Kate Wells

A common myth is that when you become a senior, you start to become a bad driver.

However, age alone is not a factor in bad driving. In fact, many older, more experienced drivers remain safe on our roads.

The issue is that our bodies, both physically and mentally, begin to change as we grow older and this may affect the way we drive.

Today’s roads are much busier

than before. We are not just watching out for other cars, but pedestrians, cyclists, motorbikes and motorized scooters, to name just a few.

Typically, older drivers take longer to respond to important decisions and may have to deal with weaker muscles, limited range of motion and a reduction in flexibility. This can interfere with our ability to be aware of our surroundings, 360 degrees around our vehicle.

We recommend a few things we can do as drivers to compensate for the

changes brought about by aging:

• Have regular medical and vision check-ups at least once a year.

• Avoid driving in stressful traffic situations.

• Keep an appropriate distance from vehicles ahead. Always use a “three second” following distance.

• Take medication in prescribed amounts and at intervals specified by your doctor. Avoid any medication that might interfere

with your ability to drive.• Don’t drive when feeling ill or tired.• Have a passenger travel with you

to help navigate and ask them for tips on your driving.

If you are asked to do a re-test, make sure you prepare for it. Seek professional driver training that specializes in senior driving re-tests.

These really help update your skills as a mature driver and can take away any stress you may feel about being tested.

Classy Caddies roll onto Fort Rodd groundsJennifer Blyth

Classy Caddies of all shapes and sizes will be rolling onto the grounds at the Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site this Sunday.

The eighth annual Classy Caddies Show & Shine, hosted by the Vancouver Island Chapter of the Cadillac Club of B.C., welcomes classic car enthusiasts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with registration available from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Admission is $15 per show car and occupants, while the regular park

admission applies for visitors. In addition to the classic chrome and

shining whitewalls, the day will include live music by The Elderly Brothers, dash plaques, trophies and the Fort’s Choice Awards, plus door prizes and a barbecue.

Start the fun rolling a day earlier by participating in the club’s Poker Run, Saturday, July 9.

For more information, contact Dewane at 250-370-5557 or Lee at 250-592-4132, or visit online at www.bccadillacclub.ca

Jeff Isenor, owner of Panache Home Decor Consignment Store in Esquimalt, appreciates the power offered by his 2011 GMC Silverado’s V-8 engine, especially its “throaty sound as it accelerates,” he says.

The sleek, powerful Cheyenne Edition’s personality? “Thor, son of Thunder,” Isenor quips.

And just what does the truck say about its owner?

“Dependable, strong, trustworthy and adventurous!”

Jeff Isenor, from Panache Home Decor Consignment Store, drives a 2011 GMC Silverado – Cheyenne Edition

At the Track

Western Speedway race fans thrilled to three classes of racing action last Saturday night as the Stock Cars, IMS4 Mini Stocks and WILROC Lites Sprint Cars took to the track.

No. 96 Alex Mouner started a successful evening by posting the night’s fast time for the IMS4 Mini Stocks of 18:903. Mouner followed that by winning the First Heat Race and placing second in the A Trophy Dash before winning the 20-lap Main Event, followed by Matt Szauer, Justin Woodske, Gilles Parenteau and Caleb VanBree.

Szauer had earlier won the A Trophy Dash and Second Heat Race, while VanBree had earned the checkered flag in the B Trophy Dash.

Fast time for the Stock Cars went to No. 32, Aaron Wilkie, who posted a time of 18:851 but followed it with third-place finishes in the A Trophy Dash, won by Darryl Crocker, and 40-lap Main Event. Ryan Wade was a double winner for the night, posting a win in the First Heat Race and the Main Event, followed

by Kyle Cottam. Sam Hunt took home the hardware for the B Trophy Dash.

WILROC Lites Sprint Cars fast time went to No. 55 Jeff Bird, with 15:849, but it was Paul Verhagen who would notch the win for both the B Trophy Dash and First Heat Race. Guy Barrett took the A Trophy Dash and Jesse Dardengo the Second Heat Race, while Ryan Wade would take the checkered flag for the 40-lap Main Event, followed by Barrett, Deter Lejeune, Dardengo and Ron French rounding out the top five.

Coming up at the track: This Saturday, July 9, welcomes Mascot

Night, plus Demo Cars, Trucks, Bombers and Mini Figure 8s, sponsored by Galaxy Motors, along with a school bus race and fireworks, sponsored by Wilson’s Transportation. Return to the track on Wednesday, July 13 for Hornet racing, sponsored by Steve Copp Construction.

Service & Accessories

School is out and summer is here. Whether you have long-standing travel plans or a last-minute road trip in mind, consider these tips from California’s Office of Traffic Safety.

Plan Your TripPlan, map and estimate

the duration of your driving ahead of time and let others know your plans. You can estimate the cost of gas for your trip at http://fuelcostcalculator.aaa.com/

Check road conditions, including possible road closures.

Prepare Your VehicleCheck the tires, including the spare –

proper inflation and good tread can save money, time and lives. Inspect the engine, battery, hoses, belts and fluids for wear and proper levels. Check the A/C and do a “once around” – test all the lights, wipers and clean the windows (inside and out).

If unsure of what to do, consider a quick inspection by a qualified technician. A few dollars up front can mean peace of mind and safe arrival, and no costly on-the-road repairs and trip interruptions.

Prepare an Emergency Roadside Kit, including jumper cables, a flashlight and plenty of bottled water.

Safety First and AlwaysBuckle up – every trip, every time – and

don’t drink and drive. If you have a flat tire, engine problems

or a fender bender, drive out of traffic lanes and off the highway if possible – freeway shoulders are not safe for repair work.

Buckle Up Drivers & PassengersUse the correct seat for young passengers

and be sure it’s installed properly.Remember that long trips can be

particularly tough on kids, especially in the heat – pack plenty of snacks and cold drinks for the road (consider freezing juice boxes or water bottles overnight). Use books, toys, DVDs and video games to keep children occupied and the driver focused and keep children 12 and younger in the back seat – it’s the safest place.

Stopping along the drive gives everyone a

chance to stretch and makes the trip easier. Focus on the RoadDon’t text or talk on your cellphone while

driving. If you need to make a call, check road or weather conditions or respond to a text, wait until stopped in safe place.

Don’t program your mobile GPS while you are driving. Either have a passenger do it or stop in a safe place.

Share the driving with other passengers to avoid fatigue. Driving while drowsy can be fatal – even a 30-minute nap can help – and schedule your trip to allow for frequent breaks. Pull over at rest stops to stretch your legs and focus your head.

Never Leave a Child Alone in a Car Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even with window slightly open. An outside temperature of 101° F can create an interior temperature of 140 ° F.

If you see a child unattended in a hot vehicle, call 911. Place your cellphone, purse or other important items needed at your next stop on the floor in front of a child in the backseat. This triggers adults to see children when they open the rear door and reach for their belongings.

Always lock your car and ensure children do not have access to keys or remote entry devices. If a child is missing, check the pool first, and then your car or any other vehicles at your stop, including car trunks. Teach your children that vehicles are never to be used as a play area.
