July 5, 2013

As the storms rolled through Hampton Roads this week, we had to use every sunny moment we could to get out on the water at Junior Sailing camp! The skies finally cleared by July 4th and we decorated boats and got out sailing!

Beginner ClassFeild Russell, Layne Kennedy, and Colin

Voigt worked with the beginner class again this week. The campers were able to get out on the water to start the week. They practiced their tacking skills, as well as other boat handling specifics. The beginners had fun on July 4th as they decorated their boats and took an “adventure sail” under the Hampton bridge and ended at a beach along the shoreline. Overall, it was yet again another successful week for the beginners! We look forward to having the campers back again for another session this summer or next, so they can improve their sailing even more!

Intermediate ClassJaclyn Hollander and Billy Van Buren

taught the intermediate sailors more advanced racing skills this week. The group worked on their upwind sailing skills as they sailed long beats to the ODU area. The campers worked to improve their roll tacks, especially when the wind died down after the storms rolled through. Because some of the campers have shown great improvement over the course of session one, a few intermediate sailors plan to travel to one or two

regattas in Maryland within the next few weeks. Good luck to these sailors!

Sloops ClassDaniel Russell worked with the FJ

(sloops) again this week. The FJ group focused on improving their boat handling throughout the week. They learned how to de-power a sailboat by easing their sails and hiking the boat flat. Dan also taught the group how to accelerate and stop their boats more efficiently. While session two is just around the corner, we look forward to more sloop racers joining our camp!

As we conclude session one of sailing camp, we must send a big thank you to all the parents, grandparents, families, and friends for helping make the camp run smoothly! We look forward to seeing your children in future sessions here at Norfolk Yacht & Country Club!
