By the middle of the following year, however, many of the colonists had come to favor independence, thanks to growing hostility against Britain and the spread of revolutionary sentiments. On June 7, when the Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, the Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced a motion calling for the colonies independence. Amid heated debate, Congress postponed the vote on Lee’s resolution, but appointed a five-man committee – including Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Robert R. Livingston of New York – to draft a formal statement justifying the break with Great Britain. On July 2 nd , the Continental Congress voted in favor of Lee’s resolution for independence in a near unanimous vote [the New York delegation abstained, but later voted affirmatively]. On that day, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that July 2 “will be celebrated by succeeding Generation, as the great anniversary Festival” and that celebration should include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.” On July 4 th , the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been largely written by Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2 nd , from then on the 4 th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence. Now for a bit of trivia. Who were the two men that served on the five- man committee to draft what we now know as the Declaration of Independence who both died on a 4 th of July? Not only did they die on the 4 th of July, they died on the same 4 th of July in 1826, the 50 th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Need another hint? They both served as President of the United States. The two men were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. We thank God for the men we know as Founding Fathers for their visionary leadership, their courage, and their willingness to stand against tyranny and fight for freedom. We owe a great debt to these men, and I pray that in our day, we will be people of fortitude and courage willing to provide and follow visionary leadership. Please pray for Mission Muskogee Youth Community Project which continues through Tuesday, July 10th. The movie “I Can Only Imagine” will be shown Sunday, July 15th during the 6 pm service. This Christian drama film is based on the story behind the best- selling Christian single of all time. The film tells the story of Bart Millard, the lead singer of M e r c y M e who wrote the song about his relationship with his father. Dear Southeast Family, July 11, 2018

The thought came to mind on a trip back to the office from a lunch appointment of having a guest writer for our newsletter article from time to time. When I got back to the office a mailing was on my desk from In Touch ministries and inside was an article written by Dr. Charles Stanley. The following article is from the pen [or the keyboard] of Dr. Stanley. “Worship” It’s interesting that something so foundational in the church is fraught with confusion and contention. Most of us call our Sunday gatherings ‘worship services,’ but do we really know what that means? If someone asked you to describe worship, what would you say? The word itself is derived from the Old English term weorthscipe, which means to proclaim God’s worth back to Him. It’s an expression of our devotion, adoration, gratitude, and praise for the Lord, based on who He is and what He has done. Now, this means we must have some knowledge of God and His works before we can proclaim His worth. To better understand this concept, think of yourself as an empty milk bottle that is being slowly filled with truths about God. Wouldn’t you agree that you can pour out in worship only what you have received and applied to your life? What would happen if your bottle was already filled with worldly things, or no scriptural truths had been poured in during the past week? How much could you pour out in praise to God? Although emotions are involved, genuine worship is not merely a feeling of closeness to the Lord. Jesus said, ‘God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth’ (John 4:24). It’s not a matter of outward ceremony but of a heart that is occupied with the Lord. Furthermore, in order to please Him, worship must be grounded in truth as revealed in His Word. He is not exalted when we come to praise a god of our own making, whether from our imagination or based on misinterpretation. As you prepare for worship…consider how you can express devotion to God with your thoughts, attitudes, words, songs, and deeds. After all, it isn’t just a Sunday thing – it’s an everyday lifestyle of adoration.”

Southeast Family, This morning I was reading Psalm 119 and there in the ninth section of this great chapter we find some verses that have always kind of reached out and grabbed me. The psalmist writes in verse 67: “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep Your word.” Then in verse 71 he writes: “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.” It is clear the psalmist has a supernatural perspective. He looks at “affliction” [trials, tribulations, hardship, life storms] from a positive perspective rather than as a negative. He views his affliction as working for him rather than against him, which is so counter to how we typically view affliction. Yet the psalmist sees his “affliction” as blessing. How does he do that? The psalmist looked at his affliction through spiritual/biblical lenses. He states that “before I was afflicted I went astray.” Before the affliction had come he wandered from the straight and narrow path that leads to life. He didn’t walk in the will of God. He disobeyed the counsel and instruction given to him in the Word of God. Yet after the affliction, he kept the Word. God allowed or brought affliction to rescue this believer who’d gone astray. The affliction caused this man of God to repent and return to the Lord and live in obedience and faithfulness to Him. That is a good outcome! No wonder the psalmist viewed affliction in a positive light. Now be sure not to miss this. The affliction itself was in all likelihood not good. It may have been downright awful. Yet what the affliction accomplished in the life of the psalmist was good. The affliction was able to bring about a good result because of a proper response on the part of the psalmist to the affliction. He responded to the affliction with a heart that was yielded to God Himself. Notice again what the psalmist writes in verse 71: “It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn your statutes.” The psalmist came to realize there were some things he’d never had learned about God and His statutes had God not permitted or brought the affliction. There are just some things we will never learn about God outside the crucible of suffering. This past Sunday night we watched the movie “I Can Only Imagine.” The song by that same title is the best-selling Christian single of all time, yet it was birthed out of a great deal of affliction. We can allow afflictions to make us callous, bitter, resentful, or angry. Or we can allow affliction to move us closer to Jesus, to a greater reliance upon Him, a firmer focus on Him, more of a yieldedness to Him, and a lifestyle of greater obedience to Him. I encourage you to allow affliction to accomplish its greater purpose in your life. If you will, it will produce for you an eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

GGOOOODDTTIIMMEERRSS KKEENNTTUUCCKKYY TTRRIIPP -- If you have signed up for this trip, your

final balance is due on Sunday, August 5th.

Southeast Family, Early this morning I read these insightful, instructive, and encouraging words penned by the great man of God and pulpiteer Charles Spurgeon: “He whose life is one even and smooth path, will see but little of the glory of the Lord, for he has few occasions of self-emptying, and hence, but little fitness for being filled with the revelation of God. They who navigate little streams and shallow creeks, know but little of the God of tempests; but they who “do business in great waters,” these see his “wonders in the deep.” Among the huge Atlantic-waves of bereavement, poverty, temptation, and reproach, we learn the power of Jehovah, because we feel the littleness of man. Thank God, then, if you have been led by a rough road: it is this which has given you your experience of God’s greatness and lovingkindness. Your troubles have enriched you with a wealth of knowledge to be gained by no other means: your trials have been the cleft of the rock in which Jehovah has set you, as he did his servant Moses, that you might behold his glory as it passed by.” None of us enjoy trials and tribulations. We don’t go looking for them, and would love to be able to avoid them, if that were possible. As you know, it is not possible. Jesus told us that in this world we would have tribulation, but to take heart because He had overcome the world (John 16:33). The half-brother of our Lord, James, in writing about trials and tribulations prefaces the discussion with “when you face” not “if you face” (James 1). But, as Spurgeon wrote, our trials can enrich us in ways that smooth sailing cannot. We learn more about our dear Lord, and frankly, we can become more like our Lord in times of trial than when everything seems to be going our way. Times of trial are opportunities for growth and development in our Christian life. For certain, trials themselves do not make us better. Our response in them makes all the difference. Trials can make us bitter, angry, resentful, and cause us to give up on God if we fail to keep our focus on Jesus in the trial. There have been many who have shipwrecked their faith through the years because they gave up on God in their trial. Yet there have also been many who have come through trial with their faith having been forged like iron because they clung more tightly to the Lord when things became difficult (Paul and Silas are one example). Did you know that several of our beloved hymns were written in the wake of trials and tragedies? Over the next few weeks, I want to share with you the stories behind some of our beloved hymns. Stay tuned.
