Alumni Checkup My name is Tim Weber, and I am the student representative for the UMKC SOM Alumni Board. I’m hoping to engage students in discussions about how to connect alumni and current students. We will highlight our current board members as encouragement to “Take Wing!” and soar to new heights in medicine. I encourage you to reach out to me by emailing me at [email protected] if you have ideas or comments on how alumni and students can connect going forward.

This week, we are highlighting Dr. Tracy Stevens, the President of the Alumni Board. She graduated from UMKC SOM in 1990, and then she completed her Internal Medicine residency at UMKC before traveling to Rochester, MN for her fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at the Mayo Clinic. She now serves as the Medical Director of the Saint Luke’s Muriel I. Kauffman Women's Heart Center. During her time at UMKC, her docent while in the Blue 4 Unit, Dr. Jim Stanford, provided her with a strong foundation for learning. Dr. Stevens emphasizes that she's very grateful for her educational opportunities at UMKC and encourages students to reflect on our own experiences. She challenges us as students to make the most of our experience, as well as give back as alumni. Dr. Stevens says, "Remember why you're here!" She encourages us to focus on patient care despite the distractions of modern day medicine. Patients come first for Dr. Stevens, and that basis and

the foundation that UMKC School of Medicine provided her, has helped her successfully impact the lives of her patients and the community.

Radiology Interest Group

Radiology Interest Group

Hey Everyone,

Hope your school year is going well so far!

The Radiology Interest Group (RIG) will be having our first meeting on August 21st at the UMKC School of Medicine Theater B (on the first floor) from 6-7 pm. There will be some light refreshments. We will be talking about what radiology is, what the day-to-day schedule of a radiology resident looks like, and also the application process for radiology residency (both diagnostic and interventional).

We want this to be a student-led group and will be holding elections at the end of the meeting for student representatives. If you are particularly interested in applying to radiology residency in the future, this a great opportunity to become involved. In the future we plan to hold meetings on the following topics: basics of chest radiographs, basics of pediatric imaging, emergency stroke neuro imaging and neurointerventional procedures, interventional radiology, a resident panel, radiology research opportunities at UMKC, and a possibly procedure workshop at the UMKC skills lab where we can experiment with the ultrasound machines and practice central lines. Not sure if you are even interested in radiology? No problem. Everyone could use some imaging knowledge to apply to their future field of choice and much of what we plan to discuss regarding residency and applications is applicable to other specialties. If you are interested in being a part of RIG but cannot make it to the first meeting, please add your name to this google doc so you can be contacted about future events:
